I made two 9x13 pans for my famiy. One fed 6 adults dinner generously. It is so delicious and now adding it to our menu rotation. My brother ate with us (not vegan) and enjoyed it! Thank you!!! Vegan now two and a half months.
Wow! You are making this fun!!! Potatoes!!! YAY! Comfort food at its healthiest! Never in a million years did we think we would be eating nutritional yeast! It's so good! Thank you so much for doing all the leg work for your recipes. We appreciate you!!!
Made this tonight and it was a huge hit. My meat-loving husband ate 3 servings. It took a lot longer than I usually take to make dinner (almost 1.5 hour), but it was so yummy. I’ll definitely be making this one again.
Thank you for all your contribution to being vegan and eating clean. I made this for my family and we enjoyed it tremendously. I added better then bullions non chicken bullion instead of the veggie and added salt and oil and it was a hit. I also added vegan butter to the potatoes. We always check out your chanel's for ideas. Thanks again.
If you use a large metal spoon and dip it repeatedly into a cup of water you will find it easier to spread the potatoes without them sticking to the spoon. Just a thought.
Wow! Serious comfort food! So delicious! The only tweak I made was adding just a touch of vegan Worcestershire sauce. Excellent and we followed it up with your delicious german chocolate cake... so grateful for all you do for us! Blessings and Happy New Year. GmaJo ❤️
Made this last night! It was delicious! Jill I can't thank you enough for bringing the joy back to my taste buds on a plant based diet! I've tried some pretty good recipes from others but you take them to a whole new level! Being vegan can be lonely - I'm the only one in our French/Italian family. Lived in France for 16 years. You can imagine the food there! I would sometimes feel a little sad when everyone was eating our traditional holiday meals. BUT not anymore THANKS TO YOU!!!!! You are darling and brilliant!!! I can't wait to make more! The holidays and future are looking very cheerful indeed for this foodie!!!!
Finally got around to making this Shepherds Pie and it was a huge hit with my family. Family has taken on a new dynamic these days during the pandemic. I moved from living alone in Florida, lost my job, moved to Oregon with my daughter. Family now consists of my daughter, my son, his 16 year old son and 3 year old daughter plus my daughters 20 year old college student! I digress; they all loved the shepherds pie. In my 77 years, I am enjoying the organic plant based living in Oregon with promising hopes of a beautiful garden this year. The seedlings are in; the soil amended and I’m excited.
Wow, that is a full house ❤️ I’m so glad that you enjoyed it! I just got my seedlings started too and looking forward to getting them into our garden. Being outside working in my yard is the best therapy 😊
Thank you so much Jill. I've been a vegan for almost 3 years now. I watch a lot of your shows. I love how you choose easy to find ingredients. I just put this pie in the oven, had to replace some ingredients but I'm getting a good feeling it's going to be great. Thank you for loving healthy food and for sharing the recipes. Happy Thanksgiving
I'm not entirely new to this way of eating but I am new to your channel. Love it!! Reminds me so much of "old" PBS/KERA programming from my childhood, a late 70s early 80s earthy-ness vibe. I made this wonderful recipe... I didn’t have the aminos or the tahini, but it was still delicious and I am not a lentil fan. I still enjoyed it!!! Thank you so much!!!
My husband is not vegan 😞 so I make this totally vegan but I put into 2 separate baking dishes. To his I add cooked ground turkey or beef and sometimes top with shredded cheddar cheese. I get my healthy vegan dish with barely any extra effort to add what he likes. Two happy campers.

I prefer it with a stout instead of red wine. And if you use uncooked lentils they soak up all the flavours, it's worth the extra cooking time in my opinion! By the way, my mother thought me to always add nutmeg to mashed potatoes, it takes them to the next level. Give it a try next time!
Hey, Jill. It's snowing in North Texas today, 1-10-21, and it's a great day to be alive. Thank you for this wonderful recipe. Any dish topped with mashed potatoes is wonderful. I think I will try TVP instead of lentils or along with the lentils. Happy New Year to you and your family. :)
20/21 of my weekly meals are now vegetarian, and most are vegan so my homemade Shepherd's Pie was a tough one to replace but essential to make nicer than any meat based Shepherd's/Cottage pie on sale in supermarkets at any price, even though I always made my own. I found roasting onions dry with no oil in the oven chopped works well. Combine with PLENTY of ground black pepper powder, white pepper powder, cumin and coriander powder with some dry fried outer surface of cauliflower (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick outer layer that looks like coral) was enough when combined with fried mushrooms. Make a gravy using water that has been boiled with skins of roasted tomato and left to steep. Add just the juice from a tin/carton of cooked chickpeas and it is really close in taste and texture, a pinch or two of dried herbs and a pinch of esspresso coffee and job done. Pulsed then fried red pepper adds a meaty element to the sauce too but might be a little too sweet for some. I used "Flora Buttery" vegan margarine for the mashed potato topping and for an easy hint of cheese just add some tahini and some garlic puree to the mash. It is nice enough that my cats will eat the vegan mince replacement filling and I never have to buy minced meat ever again in my life (I have also made Chili-con-carne and Lasagne vegan filling replacements but not quite given up on real cheese on the lasagne topping)
I made it for dinner tonight and it is delicious. However, it doesn't feed 8 people or 2 meals for 4 people like you said. Since it is plant based if we eat just one piece we would still be hungry. For a couple I would say the servings are for 2 meals to be satisfied. Thanks for sharing.
Do you have a substitute for the nutritional yeast? I try to avoid using it and I find that it is used in a lot of recipes of yours and other vegan recipes. Thanks! This looks yummy!
The cauliflower was a new idea. Will definitely add next time I make. I actually had Shepherds pie in the freezer so had for dinner yesterday. First time I froze. It defrosted well in fridge. Anyway, you made a sauce in your BlendTec, and as you scooped the sauce out of the blender, you left in quite a bit of sauce. I kept yelling to you to get the rest of the sauce out, but you didn’t hear me, because you then set the blender aside. Right after watching your video, I watched another video from someone else, and they made something in a blender. BUT, they were able to scoop out all of the sauce because of this handy gadget.....a long thin scraper is what it’s called, and you get it from pampered chef. It works, getting almost all of a sauce out from a blender. I’m glad I got it, because, I was using a big spatula to first get as much sauce as I could from the blender, then I switched to a small spatula to get more of the sauce out, then I switched to a spoon to get the rest of the sauce out. With the long thin scraper, I just use that scraper. A real time saver. Just a mention of it in case you think you might want to get one so that you can get all of your sauces out of the blender.

Only if you're a fan of sweet potatoes! (c: In recipes, I tend to use them interchangeably - in reverse. If it calls for sweet potatoes (unless it's a dessert), I swap it out with russets.
A lot of the recipes I see are for 6 to 8 people. I am cooking for 2. It is so hard to break down the recipe to fit cooking for 2 people. Some require teaspoon measurements and that just doesn't break down easily. I am sure with most of the elderly population they would like to go plant based but it is really hard to convert measurements. Is there some source that does this?
Ah Americans. lol. Looks amazing but traditionally shepherd's pie is lamb or even mutton. All others with the same topping is cottage pie. A shepherd watches sheep.

I have done all of that testing in the many, many test batches that came before making this video
What can I sub for red wine
vegetable broth
Vegan Shepard’s pie..Sounds great - I’m allergic to tomatoes... what can I substitute for the tomato paste.. big problem for me- with vegan recipe...
You could use some miso paste
Thank you very much! 🤗
FYI Shepherds pie is typically made with lamb mince not beef (clues in the name). Beef version is called cottage pie.
Yeah, of course I learned all of that after making the video 😬
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow love the show
I believe if you replace regular potatoes with sweet potatoes would be tastier.. Great recipe though!
Only if you're a fan of sweet potatoes! (c: In recipes, I tend to use them interchangeably - in reverse. If it calls for sweet potatoes (unless it's a dessert), I swap it out with russets.
@@lisaredwine4857 yes of course. I believe with the sweet potato would remind more of a besamel. 😋
When it doesn't have lamb it's called cottage pie 🥧.
Cottage pie is ground beef. Shepherds pie is ground lamb.
Not a fan of most British cuisine.
I’ll have to try this one too!
