    The fact that Prarie Dogs have identifiable signs of having a language is one of those things that should really make us question our approach to other animals and previous ideas of language.
    Personally, I think most or all social animals, which raise their young for extended periods of time are likely to have some type of communication that extends beyond pure instinct. Is human language likely to be more complex than prairie dog language? yes, but it's not a black and white question, there are likely to be gradients and degrees in the complexity of communication different animals are capable of that are only beginning to be explored.

    • @YeeSoest
      @YeeSoest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      True. Some animals have regional accents, whales and birds for example. You can't tell me there's nothing but instinctive communication like "food" or "danger" in there when there's not only hundreds of different distinct sound patterns but also accents. We'll be in for a shock once we find a way to dolittle with them ;)

      Many linguists (scholars who study human languages) actually tackled your questions. The majority opinion at least after Noam Chomsky's theory on the very nature of human language and cognition, is a NO. Human language is uniquely complex in too many aspects that no known animals for now have any possibility to actually 'jump over the gap and follow up the human level'. There were some experiments to disprove this claim, mainly teaching some human-like languages to primates like chimpanzee, but they all failed or look very suspicious (not transparent) to be believed.

    About 50 years ago on a trip to Chester zoo in England we first saw prairie dogs in a relatively small enclosure. Over the years, we’d go quite often, they started to spread. First they got a much larger enclosure, then they started appearing in others. By the time of our last visit they were everywhere, probably not quite the billion individuals mentioned in the video but thousands, no doubt. Of course nobody mentioned bubonic plague, that might have put a bit of a dampener on our enjoyment.
