my junior year of high school I begged and begged for a kitten.. did all my research.. totally preparing myself.. then on Christmas my mom and brother put a box under the tree.. in the box was a stuffed kitten toy.......... in my room how ever.. was a gerbil... I knew NOTHING about gerbils... I tried to research and kept her for months but she was so mean..... she bit my mom pretty bad... I felt bad to return her but I wasn't prepared it wasn't fair to her! now that I know more I would LOVE to own 2 males.... don't give your kid a pet they are not prepared for....
Hi, I'm glad you made a gerbil video. There is not enough on TH-cam! I was wondering why you didn't include more information on substrate. Gerbils need 10+ inches of substrate so they can build proper tunnels and burrows, a natural behavior. It's better to have more substrate so they can dig more. I love how you have such a big tank for them since I see a lot of people with 10-20 gallons. Great video!
the hay isn't enough space for them to burrow in. to have a really happy gerbil you should give them a lot of space to burrow in, instead of things to climb on and hide in.

I honestly do disagree with your saying a 10 or 20 gallon tank would be okay. Gerbils are VERY active. They need ALOT of bedding and a 40gallon tank.. that’s just how I feel tho.💓
I have a 29 gallon but once my sister goes to college and i get her room (which is significantly bigger) i am planning to upgrade them into a 40 gallon or bigger!

Gerbil's are considered old after the age of 2, they usually get 3-4 years before passing. Do not expect a gerbil to get 6 years, that would be incredible old. And if your gerbils are fighting and you aren't trying to reintroduce them then don't separate the cage so that they still can interact. This WILL stress them out more then being completely alone, plus the can hurt each other through the bars

I have four males and 7 females. Originally I purchased a trio of males but as it turns out two of those original three were females. I was not well enough informed to properly sex the younger two females. Luckily everyone's healthy and the boys are in their own tank. The litters were a total accident but it turned into a very educational experience.
The bird in the background was having a full on conversation. It was quite adorable. I remember having 2 Male gerbils years ago and one of them was quite greasy. Explains why.
I don't think it is correct to say that gerbils typically live for about six years. It hardly happens that a gerbil lives so long. Gerbils can live up to five years, but on average they live actually three or four years. My gerbil died two weeks ago, it was almost four years old and it was considered very old.
its funny cause all the males I had always fight with each other and my females were the only ones that i could keep in groups. But its just my experience anyway ; P

Gerbils live for 6 years? All the rodents I've had lived around 2-3 years. I feed them everyday and give them vegetables, allow them time outside the enclosure (in a controlled area) and I make sure none of them are too fat or skinny... what am I doing wrong?
Nothing, 2-3 years is the typical lifespan. I think she got her facts mixed up because rats, gerbils, and hamsters all have a short lifespan of about 2-4 years.
+mike s. Metal wheels are actually not safe for gerbils, so you have to use plastic ones. If the wheel is working they won't chew on it because they will be too busy running. The wheel I use fell over one day and they immediately started chewing on it, which you can see from the video. I fixed it and they didn't chew on it again. As long as the wheel is working it should be ok for them.

sadly my first gerbil had only one eye so could not interact with others as when we tried she was bullied and even when their was a bar she was never interacting but one day we decided to keep her in her own area for 1 year and then died in my hands at the age of 2 :(
This pet near where I go to college doesn't take the best care of their animals (cages are too small/aren't always looking the cleanest etc.) and there is one gerbil left of a litter. I do not know how long he has been alone but he is about 4 months old (I asked a worker.) I really want to rescue him, but would it be a good idea to get him if he doesn't have a partner? Should I chance going to another store and trying to introduce him to another male gerbil?

I am trying to get my gerbil (Henry) friends with my other gerbils (Bobby and Bubbles). Bobby and Henry sort of get along but Bubbles and Henry don't, Bobby and Bubbles are in a separate cage to Henry (one big cage for a ferret has a divider) but sometimes I get them out in a small fish tank together to try and get them to be friends! Unfortunately Bubbles got a cut on the cheek last time!😞

Pugs are dogs, so they take a lot of time and care. Pugs are also really unhealthy dogs because of their deformed noses. It causes so many unnecessary problems for them and shortens their life. There are many healthier dog breeds out there that are just as friendly and adorable.
Great video but personally I think they need more shavings and more room to burrow. I feel like gerbils really are one of the most unappreciated rodents as many prefer hamsters and guinea pigs over gerbils. My school had a animal class that I was able to go to for around 5 years and most of the gerbils there were males. There were around 4 males and 2 females there in 10 gallon tanks. Now I own two female gerbils and I completely agree it is much harder having female gerbils. They are so energetic and get into a lot of mischief. Male gerbils don't seem as interested in causing trouble. They just want to be handled properly, run through a cardboard maze to earn their treat, and go back to their tank for some play and rest. I am nervous about putting my female gerbils in a maze cause they just want to climb over walls and adventure where they shouldn't.

I was just given a gerbil. He was in a tank with his father and two brothers. He killed them all. He is also huge. A lot bigger than an average gerbil. I wouldn’t be surprised if her was like a dwarf rat or something 😂. So I feel like introducing him to a new gerbil is a bad idea. Any one have any other thoughts tho?
2 females 2 males when we got them. The people we got them from fed them cat food and their water never worked. But later on when we got them a 20 gallon cage they had good food. Working water bottle and good sized cages for them. We found out the females were pregnant because the people we got them from didn't even know they were gerbils. They said they were hamsters and never separated the genders now we have 4 boys and 4 girls for a bigger cage bur they are happy healthy spoiled gerbils now.
I have a four year old female gerbil left after my other little girl I had died yesterday. :/ Now recently I've been noticing that the one I have still left has gotten very long teeth so I called the vet and they told me they couldn't trim them because she is so old. i have 2 gerbils currently, but before them i had one gerbil, only because he was the only one left as someone had brought 3, leaving him alone. we took him because we wanted to try and ‘cheer him up’, as my brother said, and we played with him everyday and he got really tame, i really wanted him to get him a friend, but for some reason they kept having girl litters at my pet store, he died last year, but he was my first real pet so I’ll always remember him.
My uncle Johnny is getting me gerbil for Christmas and she came from facebook. I want to get another gerbil but I don't know how to introduce them if I do get another gerbil(s).
My parents are allowing me to get to gerbils however at the time be store we went to and the closest one only had one gerbil because they were trying to breed the others so I have a friend who works there who's going to let me know ASAP when another male gerbil is available so that way we can go and pick him up. Luckily the enclosure the one that I have now is in has made him happy enough and he has enough to explore to where I hope we can get a second gerbil before he gets too bored and too depressed. I think it'll take a few weeks but we're going to get one ASAP!
I'm a little confused. You said plastic is bad because they will chew on it and die, but then their wheels are made of plastic and clearly being chewed on from the looks of those bite marks. Also you said cages with metal bars are bad because they'll chew on those, but then you put metal bars in the tank to separate the hay area?

A lot of people and internetsites are saying that too much fruit and vegetables is bad for rodents because they can get diarrhea. how do you add new gerbils to your ones you already have. I have a male gerbil that I got from a lady that did not want him anymore(her kids) and also her brother but the brother passed away recently and I have a female that I got from somebody else and tried to get her new friends but did not like them.. they were my friends and she said I could give them back if it did not work out... please help!! so now I have 2 gerbils male and female that have no buddy's..

That’s total BS about needing more than one. I have one and it’s the happiest little gerbil I’ve EVER seen. Every situation is deferent. ONE IS ABSOLUTELY FINE!!!
Lol I be feeding my gerbils seeds and gerbil food, fruits, veggies, chips, bread, pizza, nuts, orange juice, juice, burrito, rice, Chinese food, etc and he lasted for almost five years(4.5years) and was happy. I still do this to my other gerbils.

I was just given a gerbil. He was in a tank with his father and two brothers. He killed them all. He is also huge. A lot bigger than an average gerbil. I wouldn’t be surprised if her was like a dwarf rat or something 😂. So I feel like introducing him to a new gerbil is a bad idea. Any one have any other thoughts tho?
2 females 2 males when we got them. The people we got them from fed them cat food and their water never worked. But later on when we got them a 20 gallon cage they had good food. Working water bottle and good sized cages for them. We found out the females were pregnant because the people we got them from didn't even know they were gerbils. They said they were hamsters and never separated the genders now we have 4 boys and 4 girls for a bigger cage bur they are happy healthy spoiled gerbils now.
I have a four year old female gerbil left after my other little girl I had died yesterday. :/ Now recently I've been noticing that the one I have still left has gotten very long teeth so I called the vet and they told me they couldn't trim them because she is so old. I am seriously considering to just trim them myself because it is giving her a lot of discomfort. Does anyone know about trimming gerbil/mice teeth?
i have 2 gerbils currently, but before them i had one gerbil, only because he was the only one left as someone had brought 3, leaving him alone. we took him because we wanted to try and ‘cheer him up’, as my brother said, and we played with him everyday and he got really tame, i really wanted him to get him a friend, but for some reason they kept having girl litters at my pet store, he died last year, but he was my first real pet so I’ll always remember him.
My uncle Johnny is getting me gerbil for Christmas and she came from facebook. I want to get another gerbil but I don't know how to introduce them if I do get another gerbil(s).
My parents are allowing me to get to gerbils however at the time be store we went to and the closest one only had one gerbil because they were trying to breed the others so I have a friend who works there who's going to let me know ASAP when another male gerbil is available so that way we can go and pick him up. Luckily the enclosure the one that I have now is in has made him happy enough and he has enough to explore to where I hope we can get a second gerbil before he gets too bored and too depressed. I think it'll take a few weeks but we're going to get one ASAP!
I'm a little confused. You said plastic is bad because they will chew on it and die, but then their wheels are made of plastic and clearly being chewed on from the looks of those bite marks. Also you said cages with metal bars are bad because they'll chew on those, but then you put metal bars in the tank to separate the hay area?

Can you maybe do a video about gerbil diet? (Like the rat one but than for gerbils.) Also I have a question. A lot of people and internetsites are saying that too much fruit and vegetables is bad for rodents because they can get diarrhea. I was wondering why you haven't got a problem with that while you're giving them only unproccesed food? Is it something they get used to?
+AWeerheim I'm not sure why they are saying that. Possibly because they are not providing a balanced diet or they over feeding certain green veggies that cause stomach upset.

i am getting my cousins 2 gerbils today and they live in a critter trail and critter trails are not safe because they are plastic and small one time they chewed off the wheel so the wheel stoped working i talked to my mom about getting a new cage and she said we are just going to get the cage that my cousin gives us so i am worried that they are going to chew on the plastic do u have any tips that will help them chew something besides the plastic and one of the gerbils does not use the wheel wich is on the second part of the critter trail is that bad if he does not use his wheel can someone help pls

Gerbils don't typically live up to six years. Three to four years is much more common even in very good care.

Hey Happy tails I have 2 major questions. First one being could I use my chinchilla dust bath for them or not.. and I was looking a buying them a new cage right now I have a 10 gallon tank. But I was looking to buy a ferret looking cage off of Amazon it says gerbils can use this.. and I know they need to burrow so I would get a closed chinchilla bathing igloo kind of thing and fill that up and I would buy 2 Because I 2 females... this may not make sense but I’ve Been asking around nobody’s responded it would help so much th
Yes you can use chinchilla sand. No you cannot use a ferret cage, they will go through the bars or chew their way through plastic
