How to Make Your Own Hamster Seed Mix

  • Hi, I made this video to explain how I made a homemade seed mix for my hamster and hopefully this will provide a good basis of understanding for you if you would like to make one too! I go into what kind of ingredients should go into the mix, how many ingredients you should try and aim for and how to use Excel to calculate the percentages of protein, fat and fibre each ingredient would provide to the mix. If you’re completely new to hamster nutrition, my previous video outlines some basics • What Should You Feed Y... but I recommend also doing your own further research as well as checking out the links below.
    ** Here is a link to download the spreadsheet that I used in my example, I have already input the formulae so you can have a go messing around with proportions and then switching the ingredients/adding more or less etc. I personally wouldn't use the ingredients and proportions as they already are in this sheet because the fibre is pretty low and the fat is pretty high but again this is your call as you will know your hamster and their diet best. Then the second sheet lets you calculate the proportions of your commercial mix with your homemade one, I have linked the cells so once you have calculated the nutritional info of your homemade mix, they should already appear in the second sheet :-) docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... **

      Aubrey Johnson hahah I’m glad you enjoyed that, it was definitely my favourite part! Aww some hamsters have way more shy/calm personalities but it might help if you give her her food in a boredom breaker (like the ones in my vid from a few weeks ago) then she’ll have something to do and you can watch her work out how to get into them😊

    I love this video! Would you consider sharing...or even selling your spreadsheet? I would love to buy it to calculate my own hamster mix. I currently have 4 hamsters - one adult Syrian female, two adult Winter Whites, and one adult Campbell's. I've had as many as 7 at once because we rescue them when owner's decide they no longer want them. I love them all so much and plan to keep rescuing these wonderful little animals! Please consider sharing or selling your spreadsheet, as it would be of great help. Thank you!

    my hamster loves this mix, although I'm confused about the chicken, after switching from chicken to turkey (as its Christmas) the protein content has halved so I looked at other sources, and found that chicken is only 45% protein not 80%, how did you get 80% and would this be the same for turkey?

    • @happyhamster7213

      I’m still going through the initial mix that I made so I’d say that lasts 4/5 months however I do have all of the ingredients I used leftover (minus the veggies). It’s no doubt more expensive to begin with however I think it’ll even out in the end as you won’t find yourself needing to repurchase many if any of the components used

    • @happyhamster7213
      @happyhamster7213  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A R because I understand that getting all of the individual ingredients is quite expensive (especially as you have to buy most of them in bulk) I have considered it but I’d need whoever was purchasing to understand that the nutritional levels I’ve calculated are my best estimate and aren’t completely accurate. It’s also a hard one because when you make your own you can tailor it to your hamster’s age, weight and general dietary needs so unless I knew these things about a person’s hamster I don’t know how responsible it would be to sell my exact one

I've got your back though and have put the link to my example spreadsheet in the description box, all the formulae is already done so you just need to have a play around with proportions to get used to it and then you can add your own different ingredients to it once you've got the hang of things 😊 but if you need any more help, just drop me another comment and I will try my best to answer any questions!
