I watched this a couple of years ago and have been using the recipe for my chickens ever since. I am very happy to know exactly what they are eating and they are thriving! Thank you for sharing this!
I have ten week old chickens that I started feeding this mix to. But they won't eat the oats. Have you had that problem with this? Maybe they aren't old enough?
@@junusavior65 Had the same issue with my chickens eating around the oats. Often the come back to them later. I started cutting my oats in half and increasing the wheat.

After starting this feeding plan last fall, it has worked well over the winter. Now in March we are getting so many eggs we can't give them all away. They taste so much better and are strong shelled and after adding the fodder you recommend the yolks are a deep yellow to orange. We thank you so much for having a great TH-cam channel.
After all these years watching your videos , I finally did it I got 6 chicks hens and one turkey for thanksgiving. They were 5 days old when I got them and they are 14 days now .
Best of luck to you. I have started about 16 months ago. So much to learn but worth it. Love the fresh eggs. I have 11 hens 2 roosters. Will hatch 4 more hens this spring. I want 15 hens with 1 rooster. I will sell my other rooster. Its a lavender Americauna. I think this spring i want to start a flock of game hens.
The trick is processing them. I've had chickens and ducks, but have yet to learn how. I love turkey so I want to raise at least a couple a year, but have to learn to process them for that to make sense.
@@Growmap well racoons got my turkeys at 3 months old.. will try again this spring... im up to 11 hens now laying eggs 2 roosters. Going to start another flock of hens this yr, havent decided on what breed yet.
I wanted to share my favorite feeding method for whole grains. I put my feed in a bucket when I close the hens in at night, add water to 2 x the feed depth then feed on the ground next morning. Love this video, it started my experiment in whole grains and scratch. Keep on keepin on young lady!!!!
I don’t put my feed on the ground because of pathogens. Worm eggs, frass from pinacate beetles, etc. the chickens pick at their poop and drink spilled muddy water enough as it is lol 😂
@@a.bentley7016 It can also break down the harder outer husk and make feed more digestible. Also consider fermenting chicken feed or even sprouting or growing some into fodder.
@@kirbyblackburn8550 I was planning on taking the majority of this after mixing, ferment portions on a three day cycle (which gives wonderful gut bacteria, WET grains, triples the size of serving, and less needed as more nutritionally dense) and then maybe a fifth w dry mix to serve
@@scoobri6 Dried beans are bad, but small beans sprouted are good. Sprouting them increases nutritional value. I sprout a mix of 4 types of field peas. One looks like black-eyed peas and the other 3 are small, dark field peas.

Love your video! I will be sharing this for sure! We started out allowing ours to free-range and they rarely ate the feed. We lost 2 to hawks, and 1 to an owl (because that chicken would not get in the coop that night). So they are in the coop more now. We do let them out and are watchful. We just can't bring ourselves to have an animal constantly caged.
Great video with a ton of info. Here’s what I plan to do. 4 metal trash cans for corn, wheat, oats and soy. 1 measure of each of the first 3 three and a 1/2 measure of the soy. Mix as I feed in a coffee can. More thorough mixing and less hassle.
@@ForgingFreedomTV got it. I misunderstood. Why do you prefer your ratios? I'm a new chicken owner and my babies are 3 weeks old so they'll be going outside soon and I want to plan, between regular feed and insects, so I'm learning what to do.
Yes! Thank you! No one does this. I have been trying to find a video like this. I thought it was so weird how many people use crumble or pellets. I only use crumble now for the chicks but hate how it just obliterates itself. I am so excited to make my own layer feed instead of using that processed crap.
Thank you SOOOOOOO much! I’m just about to get chickens in about a month and I am so excited and want the very best for my hens that lay eggs because those are going into mine and my family’s body!!
Good video. I make my own feed too. I do not use Soy it might be a good protein source but growing mealworms is fairly easy. I freeze them then dry them. Mealworms are 50% excellent quality "animal" protein. Chickens are not Herbivores. They are very carnivorous. "Bugs" keep them healthy and prevent a Salmonella infection. Soy makes big eggs. Too much Soy can cause ova-duct prolapse. I prefer using dried mealworms for my protein source. I also grow #4 Russian Comfrey and enough corn for a year's worth of feed after it is dried. I do not use artificial fertilizers or pesticides of any kind. I do not use "organic fertilizers either. I use a different plot for corn every year
You have a YT channel and 58 subscribers, but no content. Would love to see how you do make your chicken feed, from the type of corn you grow, how much, how you grow your mealworms, etc. We are only on 2.6 acres just outside city limits, steep hill, so not sure all your methods would work for me, but maybe I could adapt them....thank you...
New subscriber here as well as new chicken owner. I appreciate this video, thank you for making it so I could give my chickens the healthiest life possible as well as giving my family the healthiest eggs possible.
Thank you for the video. The challenge is finding ingredients of the quality I want. Almost all corn and soy is GMO now. And even though oats and wheat are not (so far), the best oats are grown up north where they spray them with Glyphosate to dry them right before harvesting. Even organic oats can test positive for Glyphosate. I found a sprouting feed I really liked. But when shipping costs went up, they raised the cost to ship one 25 lb bag to $100+ which is just crazy. They clearly decided they didn't want to ship it anymore. Quality ingredients can sometimes be found locally. For example, there is a grower of organic wheat NW of OKC. They also grow field peas. Both can be sprouted and wheat berries can be grown into fodder. Flax seed is getting easier to find because more people are feeding it to their horses now.
Do you think you should add diatomaceous food grade powder to this mix. For bugs and to keep the girls healthy.. I saw someone else add it ..I'm just curious your opinion and thoughts.. great video lots of information..I love your doggies. So cute..
We used to give our hens this sort of higher nutrient rich, homemade food as well and they always laid well beyond the usual time when most hens would be considered past their prime egg laying years. Boy, I still miss the girls. ( City dweller now) God bless you out there, doing the right thing by your chickens 🐔 If I ever get the chance to get back to the farm, know that I will be using your feed recipe for my girls. 😁✌🏽🧓🏽
Great breakdown. I was mixing my own grain winter through summer and soaking it for three days, but when I took sick, I had my wife go back to the pellets. Thanks for the time you took to put this all together. Blessings, Jim
when i had chickens for eggs i did much like you do. i never gave my chickens anything soy. i used red wheat, flax, oats, barley, corn only when it was to keep them warm. i kept all grains in separate 30 gallon drums and in or under water. the wet grains allowed the birds to digest the grain before they pooped it out. as far as the extras go i also added shredded dried red beets, rehydrated. i was selling 50 dozen eggs a week and some days i would get 10 dozen a day. i used a cement mixer to mix it all. i also raised ducks and fed them pretty much the same mixture.
Thanks for the video!Much like you,I make my own mix for my "micro- Pterodactyls".Watching your videos has given me a few ideals on improving my mix though.I use a local whole grain pigeon feed (Excello) as the base of my mix.Though the grains are local, it is $30 for a 50lbs bag.It has a lot of Safflower, Sunflower ,Yellow and Austrian red peas .I then mix in a few scoops of 20% poultry feed.I recently started adding a scoop or two of Sweet Feed (which the hens really seem to like on its own ).I throw a daily ration of this mix into a 3 gallon container ,which I fill with water and let it ferment a day or two.My hens REALLY go crazy for this stuff!I'm going to have to find another source for my grains (other than local feed store),and try some Soymeal you suggested in your video. Thanks again for the video and the great ideals!
You can sprout sunflower and peas. It only takes a few days and increases the feed value. I suspect safflower seeds can be sprouted, but have no personal experience and a quick search didn't turn up any information on that. Never sprout milo as that becomes potentially deadly. (Odd, huh?)
Thanks for getting me started on this journey. I discovered that non genetically engineered soy and corn is very difficult to find. I did find a feed store just over an hour out of town and it is so much cheaper to buy grains from a farming community. It was less than half the price of all city Big Lot pet stores and a beautiful drive. I was so excited I wanted to share this with all of you. They also ordered non gmo corn for me and it was still reasonably priced but I gad to buy a 50 lb bag.
Chickens know what they need to eat. Just like cats, and children. :). I free feed oyster shells, and offer greens and meat as supplements. Before I even reach their pen, they are either interested in what I have to offer or not. They must smell the food from 20 feet away. It is interesting observing what they eat and how much. Thank you for the tips.
This is so helpful! We also take our processed animal organs (cow, sheep, pig), cook them and can them up for the chickens. That’s our source of protein. They love it!!
❤❤❤ I appreciate this so much!! Thanks so much for putting in the work to show us this!! So helpful. Was this recipe done with organic ingredients? It seems difficult to find these bulk items available organically. I don’t want to feed my hens GMO’s or glyphosate when the whole purpose for me is to have high-nutrition eggs, that won’t cause cancer.
The only way to know for sure that your chickens aren’t getting any glyphosate is to feed them grass. They actually lay better eggs and do really well on grass clippings. You can get a grass catcher for your lawnmower and all you want for free.
I have looked into this recipe and while I like it it's out of reach for most ppl to feed them if they wanted to do organically with the prices they have inflated beyond belief. I could only afford it once then I went to a layer mash that was organic and bought that then I also mix my own organic corn, black sunflower seeds, meal worms and IF I can afford it once in a while I may add in a bag of wheat or oats or even flax seeds. I love all these ideas but it's getting hard out there for the feed that is Organic is so darn expensive and I am thinking of only keeping the mash and corn for winter with sunflowers and changing it up to wild caught salmon CAT FOOD. Yes I just said Cat food. Cuz it has TONS of protein super healthy and the cat food small round pellets are perfect for laying hens. I saw another lady show this and now her chickens are laying year round and super healthy. I liked the idea that the cat food can be organic or natural wild caught... I'm not a big fan of the corn or soybean meal. But I do feed mine organic corn fall though spring. I think this lady is amazing and does a great job showing the detailed braked down on nutrition. :)
@@ruby7741 you are amazing!!! Thank you so much for the cat food tip! I had no idea! Wow. I really appreciate you being so kind and helpful. I really needed this. Money is tight and bills are insane, grocery prices ridiculous! I can’t wait to try the cat food and hopefully get more egg production from it too… especially because winter is soooo dreadfully long here in upstate NY, and I’d love to get eggs throughout winter too. That’s encouraging to hear how the other lady you saw said that her hens now lay year round. WOWWW!!! I’m so excited and grateful. Thank you again! 🤩✨🤍‼️ PS - I’ve also wondered if I could order everything in bulk from azure standard to make my own chicken feed. The prices seem reasonable for organic high quality nutrition when buying bulk but idk… I’ll have to do the math and see.
@@JaneThatcher89 Your Welcome kind Soul. :) I hear ya! Prices are out of this world and having a family with prices going sky high we are all trying to figure out what we don't need. Where to cut the bills is hard especially when you have a child that can't eat foods that are full of chemicals thanks to the Gov for sending my 19 yr old father in the 70's to Vietnam and allowing him as a Ranch hand to clean out the Agent Orange Barrels and get it all over him. They told him he was fine even as he stirred the chemicals together for spraying from the air planes. Skin Cancer disintegrating disks in his back and MANY other issues... while they(Gov) see what they did to him and he has some health care that helps VERY LITTLE because this is in his DNA and was passed down to EVERY CHILD AND now his grand daughter my daughter. It STINKS trying to navigate rashes since a baby, food allergies and more... One thing they(Gov) wont do is acknowledge at all that it transferred to his daughter me and my sis and now to my child(his grand baby). But BOY O BOY did they(gov) come to see my mom and dad and do a 5 hour study take down notes on what my parents said when they asked questions about us the babies of a Ranch Hand. So I completely GET your reasoning to KEEP IT CLEAN and KEEP YOURSELF and family alive as long as possible. If I can find the Video of the lady using cat food to feed her chickens I will paste it below, it was really neat to see. We to live in a very cold climate over here in Upper Michigan or they call it the UP :) The winters we have can be long and cold. I've never looked on azure, Good find there! @@JaneThatcher89 I didn't find the other video but I did find this one that I thought was a really good idea for a warm meal treat to keep the hens laying and had a ton of protein as well and it's just beans and pasta. I even had a friend that it happened to and she was so upset she wont ever buy the food again she had. So this person in the video talks a bit about many things but how cheep it is to feed them a high protein diet this way. Hello, I have watched several you tubes on feeding whole grains and yours is the best! Lol I have wanted to change my flock to whole grain but have a question. My scratch grain is a 6 grain scratch and the bag says to not make it the sole source of food only about 10 percent . It has most the same grains except I don’t know the ratio of each so that could be why they say don’t feed only this scratch. I don’t know now if whole grain feeding is good or not because I have always been told scratch should not be your only source of food . Thanks love your videos
It would depend on what is in it but most stretch feeds have the cheapest possible grains and not the most nutritious so mixing your own would be better
Let me just say I love your video. Very informative. I don't like soybean so I will definitely be looking for an alternative. Do you have the right ratio of each grain written out somewhere? Thank you for educating us.
You have to be careful with soy. Most of not all is GMO and “Roundup Ready”. As a Vietnam veteran fighting cancer and diabetes I do not allow chemicals of any kind on my farm
Everything is a chemical and GMOs are safe because they are just selectively bred hybrids except they are more precisely bred in a lab. It's not much different than selectively breeding to get breeds of livestock.
@@dollipop12 I beg to differ. These are genes extracted from one organism and inserted into the DNA of another, thus creating something very different from a naturally selectively bred hybrid. They've created pigs with human genes, for instance, to make a more usable heart valve to transplant into humans. And in plants, they've inserted animal and fish genes. They're playing around with genetics in a way nature has never seen. And our bodies do not recognize this genetic material. There is evidence that these genetically modified organisms can cause our intestinal wall to become far more permeable, thus causing "leaky gut syndrome." Many people have found that eliminating GMO foods from the diet helps with MANY severe modern diseases. But will such studies every be conducted in the good old US of A? Are you kidding? Who would fund such a study? For such studies, you've got to go overseas. There's a good reason Europe has completely banned GMO foods!
You could bake up some cornbread with some Cheyenne pepper it forces them to drink more water witch help them a little extra especially in the winter I was tutored about this by a little old granny.
First time growing chickens. Used this recipe and my 6 RI reds are growing great. However, they are getting close to laying, and know I need to add some calcium. What is the best way to do this, and what is the new recipe? Thanks again,
Very interesting and informative. Have you considered small additions of either Brewer’s Yeast or Blood and Bone, I keep about 30 chickens and 30 ducks, in Australia it’s difficult to obtain fish or meat meal and a grain diet may sometimes be deficient in B group vitamins, notably niacin. Thanks for your thoughts.
@@Noniinthebush Apologies for not responding sooner. Fertiliser blood and bone is not appropriate as it usually contains animal waste. Young ducks are more reliant on an adequate Vitamin B3 inclusion than chickens and should not be fed with chicken starter or pullet grower unless it is fortified. I crush B3 “niacin” tablets into a powder These are inexpensive and available from supermarkets. When the birds can eat grain I supplement it with pig grower as suggested in the excellent “Backyard Duck Book” by Nyiri Murtagh. Incidentally my chickens like it too. An other thing , we eat a lot of rice and I always cook a lot. All my birds , large and small love it.
My chickens won't eat pellets, and they are getting fussy about the crumbles. You are right about the crumbles, too much of it turns to dust and is wasted. I have been feeding them oats, barley and scratch mix since they were old enough to have it. I do give them oyster shell. I feed hand pulled clover greens if it's bad weather and they stay in the run, and in winter I buy kale and feed them that. Otherwise they forage all spring, summer and fall. Eggshells I wash and dry in the oven with the pilot light is always on and they dry, Then I grind them in mortar and pestle. Great video, excellent info, thanks very much, good job!
ashy slashy I’m not going to argue with you that the GMO stuff isn’t good, but would you just give it a rest??!?!?! You’re getting so worked up about it that you might as well eat GMO stuff as much as possible and wash it down with a glass full of the chemicals they put on it cause it’s not going to kill you as fast as the heart attack you’re setting yourself up for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is BOSS? The first time you use an initialism or acronym in your document, the words should be written out with the short form placed in parentheses immediately after. This way, it's clear to the readers exactly what the letters mean. Here's an example: A New World Order (NWO)
What about sunflower seeds? I am trying to grow my own food and grains are harder for me, I could grow soybeans and sunflowers, corn although as you said too much corn is bad.
Can I feed peas and lentils? Along with the wheat oats barley corn mix? I wont use soybean at all nor canola And Everything I feed is GMO free. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Super informative video. Im analytical to begin with, so its nice to gain some knowledge in better understanding each part of the feed. We are new to chickens, got 15 about a month ago, and its nice to have this info
I agree with boosting protein. Been at this 40 years. I use different mixes for different seasons. Winter : 4 way to boost their internal heat with Game Bird crumble (22%) misty earth and oyster shells are positively essential.
@@soniabrannan412 you can get it at feed stores. It’s one of the MOST CRITICAL ingredients to a health flock! The farmers always refer to it as “ misty earth”
Very interesting! Very informative! Much food for thought... :) You really did your homework! Chickens are my next project. You can also get a cheap electric cement mixer to mix the stuff and it does a much better and less tiring job than by hand... :) It's good for the dog food too. I have a whole bank of the mixers that I use for compost/soil/sand/minerals/etc. for the raised beds and to actually mix concrete too... One person can mix up a surprising amount of concrete for big projects using 5 little cement mixers in a row just workin' their lil' ol' hearts out. And it's cheap, cheap, cheap. All you need is a pile of sand, a pile of gravel and bags of cheap cement. Sure beats having concrete delivered!
Can you make and updated video on how much it would cost now where you buy your feed from in todays market. Its so hard to find 50 lb bags of anything with prices as high as they are. I really want to make sure I'm going to give my chickens the best I can but also not break the bank either. Please and thank you
More people should consider growing buckwheat. It's small seeds that chickens can eat without grinding just added to whatever other feed they get. There's a way to grow maggots using rotten meat in a bucket with holes for the maggots to fall out on the ground for the chickens to eat. I'm sure there must be other types of larvae that can be easily grown to provide protein.
You have good knowledge about requirements of poultry, about 3.5-4% Ca for laying hens and for broiler (meat Breeds) you need to give maximum 0.8-0.95% Ca. Available Phosphorus must be aroind 0.45%. You are presented very practical knowledge and you have good command on feeding and nutrition of chicken. Even now formulations are mainly based on digestible Amino Acids
Love your videos! We are new to chickens and have 4 hens 1 rooster. breed is Orpington. They're about 17 weeks and are getting ready to produce. Happy I found this video before they started!
I REALLY enjoyed this and happy to find you again after something like 4 years. Your video is very informative, easy to understand FULL of great information.....even with the loud trucks and playing dogs :o) I can't wait to try this after I get my chickens. Thank you so much!!
Where I live I can collect a mix of seaweed, barnacle shell and grit from the beach which saves a lot. I fed my 3 old hens whole wheat soaked 24 hours on the ground in their chicken tractor every evening when I move the tractor and collect the eggs. Doing this all fall and winter I am now harvesting their feed from what they planted. For spring and summer i have switched to bird seed mix and flax seed which is growing fantastic and I hop to harvest in the fall.
Ooooh, I really want seaweed! Maybe I'll take my big trailer down to the Gulf and try to get a load! It's a long drive but damn I really want some!!! I wish google maps was real time so I could see where all the seaweed is! :)
Most "Ordinances" are B.S. and deserve to be broken. I've seen videos where there is so much seaweed washing ashore that they have to bring in dump trucks to haul it away and don't even make a dent in the stuff. Don't tell me that I can't have a bunch of that. That would be just stupid. It's not just for chickens either. I would mix it in my huge compost piles and it should be wonderful stuff for the garden!
I do. It suits me. And you know why? Because I'm an American. No REAL American follows the 'rules'. Idiot Demoncrats make up rules and try to make everybody else follow them. Fuck the Left. Our Patriot President doesn't follow the 'rules' either. That's why we LOVE him! "Demoncrats create mobs & Republicans create jobs" LoL........
So today I went to my local feed store to get what you recommended here and literally got laughed at. He told me that he sold chicken feed premixed and I’d learn the hard way that this won’t make a difference. Who does that?! Needless to say, I bought what I needed and mixed my feed.
Remember they are in business to SELL PRODUCTS, Their products that have been on the shelf for a while. They don't get the same information we do when we BROWSE AROUND.
I do mix my own feed even though I have not the complete control. I buy milled grains bag that are freshly ground twice a week, i do not know the correct percentages, it has corn wheat sunflower and barley in, then I buy concentrate bags which is sunflowers, soybean meal, minerals, it all comes down to about $.21/lb. I add calcium carbonate for the hens as i cannot find oyster shells anymore. The chickens for mean (standard barnyard chickens, not cornish) that I have raised, on 10 we just processed, only 2 had fat on their bellies.
O. an idea for next video, that would be just as interesting. Would be on chicken species. Or types of chickens and which to buy if starting a ckicken "group" for eggs.
very informative I think I know now more than before and understand I have to feed my chicken better then store bought food, I some times add meat leftover and fish leftover from out food to them. but your video added so much more knowledge. thank you
Excellent teaching video, I had a quick question, are whole pinto beans too big or can I crush them to make bite sized pieces? Buying the pellets is hitting me in the wallet also, I come to really love and value my 2 hens and want them to get the best diet as possible by creating my own, the other question was my molasses that I use for cooking, is this ok to use? Thanks for helping me be the best chicken mama in town. You are sweet to share all your knowledge young lady. Hugs from Roseville California
Well I've mixed my own feed and I don't find it to be better. I pay a lot of attention to each individual bird and I have found that each bird will have favorite thing in the mix. So in the end you have different birds in your flock with completely different diets. So I just use a layer pellet. Then I mix up my own scratch and regulate how much of that that I give them depending on what is in the mix. I also like to have oyster shells on the side for them. I think they know when they need calcium. But even when giving scratch grain on the side, some hens will just eat the scratch and not the pellets. Over all I think pellet is the best way to see that each member of the flock is getting the best nutrition. I would never use feed to try and maximize egg production. If you want more eggs. Get another chicken. Or get a different breed of chicken. For me I think it's more important for my chickens to have a stress free environment, not over crowded, safe from predators, plenty of area to scratch and find bugs and fresh grass. Plenty of fresh water and a place to take dust bathes. I keep my chickens busy working. I have portable fence I move around and they help cultivate my raised bed and work in the compost. Happy chickens lay lots of eggs.
Can you use dried peas instead of soy? They grow a lot of peas for split peas around here. They run them through a sifter and the ones too small for market fall through. Could these be used for chicken feed?
Great info! I'm omitting soy and adding fresh meal worms. (In a separate platter, not mixed in obviously.) I love how you kept talking through the dogs fighting 😆
Great video and very informative. Do you store it in that bin or is that just for mixing and then you transfer to something more food grade? If so, what do you store in?
Great video; I'm new to having chickens. I have one Delaware ("Brandon") and 2 Rhode Island reds (Tucker & Bongino). They are only 3weeks old--when should I switch to your homemade mixture from the video (Wheat/oats/corn/soy). Thank you! -Woody
Can you list in your description section the exact type and items you showed putting in your mix, including that red pallet stuff. I hear that term "fermenting" in chicken videos but - I'm sorry - I don't know how you ferment this ... Never fermented anything yet.

This video is gold. Makes so much sense to buy whole grains and beans and mix own feed.
Dry beans are not good for chickens
@@kirbyblackburn8550 I was planning on taking the majority of this after mixing, ferment portions on a three day cycle (which gives wonderful gut bacteria, WET grains, triples the size of serving, and less needed as more nutritionally dense) and then maybe a fifth w dry mix to serve
@@scoobri6 Dried beans are bad, but small beans sprouted are good. Sprouting them increases nutritional value. I sprout a mix of 4 types of field peas. One looks like black-eyed peas and the other 3 are small, dark field peas.
I've been watching chicken videos a lot in the last year and this is definitely among the top 3 when it comes to chicken feeding.
Just bought four hens. Dang, didn't realize I needed a biology degree to feed them! Good video.
1 sack Whole grain Wheat (white or red)
1 sack Whole corn
1 sack Whole Oats
1/3 sack Soy meal
She used 1/2 sacks of each and 1/6 sack of Soy in the video to suit her container.
Calf Manna can be added, not much maybe 3 scoops I am guessing by the looks.
Great video and love the pups!! 😀

May be a problem fiinding but we have a challenge at hand thanks Dennisp
Flax Seeds are $28 / 50 lb sack here in Harrison AR.
Wheat 12% crude protein 50lbx12%= 6 lbs of protein
Oat 50lbx15%=7.5
Corn 50lbx9%=4.5
Soymeal 16.7lbx38=6.35

Just had 9 pure bred Italian Maremma puppies born in So. WI . Ready in 6-8 weeks. 5 males, 4 females. Excellent Livestock Guardians.
You should be proud of youself for developing such an expertise on this subject. Watched a lot of videos trying to find a well balanced mix mix.m
Great video with a ton of info. Here’s what I plan to do. 4 metal trash cans for corn, wheat, oats and soy. 1 measure of each of the first 3 three and a 1/2 measure of the soy. Mix as I feed in a coffee can. More thorough mixing and less hassle.

i saw the comment on sprouting the grain. it's unbelievable how much more nutrition the birds will get this way.
Yes! Thank you! No one does this. I have been trying to find a video like this. I thought it was so weird how many people use crumble or pellets. I only use crumble now for the chicks but hate how it just obliterates itself. I am so excited to make my own layer feed instead of using that processed crap.
There are videos on you tube on how to make your own chicken starter too!

I use a different plot for corn every year
How do you grow mealworms?
David Bennett that’s my next goal to learn how to grow my own worms! Thanks for sharing ☀️
David...do you have a YT or fb page? I would like to grow my own corn, but not sure how to even get started....
Actually chickens are omnivores
You have a YT channel and 58 subscribers, but no content. Would love to see how you do make your chicken feed, from the type of corn you grow, how much, how you grow your mealworms, etc. We are only on 2.6 acres just outside city limits, steep hill, so not sure all your methods would work for me, but maybe I could adapt them....thank you...

You truly enlightened me when I was contemplating on buying store layer feed. Thanks!
I'm going with your advice as this is the best video I have watched. You know your stuff on feeding chickens. Thanks so much!
Flax is also sprayed with glyphosate in the fields as a dessicant. I don't feed soy to any animal or humans because it is GMO also
@@pinschrunner Thank you for letting me know. I was not aware that they also spray flax. They make it so difficult to find safe feed and food.
@@Growmap they spray all non-organic types of legumes /dry beans, rice, corn, soy, cottonseed oil, sugar beets, sweet potatoes and potato tops, peas, wheat, sugarcane, stevia, etc

I always add a cup to my grains. It definitely doesn’t hurt.

Great breakdown. I was mixing my own grain winter through summer and soaking it for three days, but when I took sick, I had my wife go back to the pellets. Thanks for the time you took to put this all together.

Yes I soaked my oats when I had game birds .
How much does it "expand" the feed?
when i had chickens for eggs i did much like you do. i never gave my chickens anything soy. i used red wheat, flax, oats, barley, corn only when it was to keep them warm. i kept all grains in separate 30 gallon drums and in or under water. the wet grains allowed the birds to digest the grain before they pooped it out. as far as the extras go i also added shredded dried red beets, rehydrated. i was selling 50 dozen eggs a week and some days i would get 10 dozen a day. i used a cement mixer to mix it all. i also raised ducks and fed them pretty much the same mixture.
Look up hog feed.
Pretty much the same feed mix @ 18% protein
If you found non genetically modified corn, you should definitely grow your own. Good for you! That is nearly impossible to find.
Not sure if you guys have an Azure Standard drop near you, but give them a look!!
Great information . . . I just wish I could find your prices for grain here in middle Tennessee . . . I just can't find these prices
I hear ya! Prices are out of this world and having a family with prices going sky high we are all trying to figure out what we don't need. I don't get my nails done never did in my life I never even get a coffee or other drinks and don't eat out much at all.

Amen, thank you for your in depth instructions. We are just trying to live like God intended it.
Let me just say I love your video. Very informative. I don't like soybean so I will definitely be looking for an alternative. Do you have the right ratio of each grain written out somewhere? Thank you for educating us.
Linseed meal is the most common alternative to soybean meal in horse feeds.
Joel Salatin says that soy is only problematic (make you produce estrogen) if it is processed; ie: the components are separated
Lady, you have a great idea about how much you need to feed the chickens and at a low cost.
You have to be careful with soy. Most of not all is GMO and “Roundup Ready”.
As a Vietnam veteran fighting cancer and diabetes I do not allow chemicals of any kind on my farm
Papa Steve do you make your own food too? I only want chemical free
There is evidence that these genetically modified organisms can cause our intestinal wall to become far more permeable, thus causing "leaky gut syndrome."
Many people have found that eliminating GMO foods from the diet helps with MANY severe modern diseases. But will such studies every be conducted in the good old US of A? Are you kidding? Who would fund such a study?
For such studies, you've got to go overseas. There's a good reason Europe has completely banned GMO foods!

Hi John, I’m in Australia too. When you say blood and bone, do you mean as in the fertiliser blood and bone?

Very interesting! Very informative! Much food for thought... :) You really did your homework! Chickens are my next project. You can also get a cheap electric cement mixer to mix the stuff and it does a much better and less tiring job than by hand... :) It's good for the dog food too.

I think small sprouted beans and seeds are good as well.
Why don’t you use black oiled sunflower seeds? I enjoyed your presentation. I’m going to start making my own feed. Thank you.
3Sphere check the ordinances. It’s illegal for us to harvest seaweed off our beaches.

That's awesome information, thanks! Would this feed be good for broilers as well?
Great video.
Very interested in getting started making my own feed.
Thank you for sharing.
Sure
What a girl!! Beautiful, smart, cute. I hope her husband realizes what he's got.
She is a hard worker too. He’s blessed.
Great info! I'm omitting soy and adding fresh meal worms. (In a separate platter, not mixed in obviously.)
I love how you kept talking through the dogs fighting 😆
Play fighting I think!
Great video and very informative. Do you store it in that bin or is that just for mixing and then you transfer to something more food grade? If so, what do you store in?
Does anyone know how much flax seed to add to this?
Great information. I'm getting chicks here with in the week. Also I really like your shirt.
Dang...you gave so much great information in this video...thank you!
I definitely have to save this one for reference material in the future :)
And you didn't add any of the egg shell powder so how much would you add of that. I just bought my first flock of 65 chickens and want to know how to make them the healthiest/happiest free range flock. Thank you and I'll go on FB too and follow you.
Thank you so much for sharing your video! Can't wait to see how you sprout your grains😊Thank you!
Love the dogs! Thanks so much for this video. Exactly what I was looking for
Very helpful video it answered a lot of my questions. Thank you for taking the time to share info
