    I used to think that interchangeable lens cameras offered much better performance than point-and-shoots. in this video, I find that the differences on film (t-max 100) are honestly pretty subtle, and I should stop throwing shade on point-and-shoots. (but I still prefer the great viewfinder and tactile feel of a mechanical camera over an electronic one.)

    It's like the optical designer at Leica Peter Karbe said: "Price, size and performance - you can only pick two". I struggled a bit to fully understanding the purpose of this lens. Thanks for the review!

      I appreciate that Leica care so much about the user experience, and Voigtlander and Zeiss lenses, though very well-made don't quite match that.
      for you, size kills the lens? I think my obsession with sharpness saves it for me, but losing a stop and having a tinier lens is tempting. (Or I guess buy the Leica for $8k and sell it for a minor loss if you move on, just feels silly.)

      @@atomikpiI'm not sure what the right analogy would be but a large lens on a slick camera such as the Leica M feels contradictive sometimes. Particularly if it obscures a quarter of the viewfinder and puts the body off balance. As if it doesn't belong. I use this old Summilux 35mm from the 80s and while the DPreview crowd would probably hunt me down with pitchforks and torches for owning it (not a very sharp lens), I still love it. Not only because of how it renders but it absolutely tiny size (6.5 oz/184g). End of rant! Looking forward to your next exotic review!

    Would love to see an uncropped gfx image with the lens to get a better feel for image coverage/vignetting

    • @atomikpi
      @atomikpi  ปีที่แล้ว

      good point- these are very mildly cropped, say 5% at each edge. not a perfect answer but hopefully you get the idea. I definitely wouldn't buy the lens _to shoot on a gfx_, but if you shoot in on 35mm or FF digital or APS-C, you can also use it on a gfx.

    This week I thought: is about to come a new video from No stream
    I am curious about your leica strap use on the bottom plate. Is it custom made?

    • @atomikpi
      @atomikpi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha thanks my very lazy schedule is working out.
      the strap is from Gordy's. inexpensive and works great. only caution is to be careful because the strap attaches to the plate, not the camera itself - so you can drop your camera if not paying attention!

    Maaaan I am so happy I found this channel. My heads been spinning trying to figure which 35 to get. Do I go all out on a cron, grab that Zeiss 2.8 silver to pair with my panda M6, or one of the new Voigtlander 35s!? Well I’m still not sure but I’m glad to hear you say that on film it’s really hard to see a difference between the Zeiss and Voigtlander

    • @atomikpi

    Hi, when you mounted it on the GFX was the vignetting hard or soft? Thanks

    • @atomikpi
      @atomikpi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hard vignetting, maybe had to crop in 5-10% (not too much). the edges also are a bit soft and imperfect even with the crop but still usable

  • @peterfarr9591
    @peterfarr9591 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe loss of sharpness when adapting down is due to the fact that the lens was designed with a larger image circle than would be ideal for a crop sensor. This means that you aren't getting the full resolving power of the lens. If the lens was designed for APS-c (had a smaller image circle) you would be able to utilize that full resolving power available

    • @atomikpi
      @atomikpi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this is part of it - an iPhone lens is in some sense sharper than a medium format lens, since the pixel density of an iPhone sensor is mind-bogglingly high. or in other words, a LF lens is typically very simple with few aspherics, high ED, whatever. so yeah it's not 100% fair to put it on a smaller sensor.
      I still find the weird aberration (?) and maybe coma (?) to be confusing. and I am inclined to maybe blame the adapter and/or filter stack but would defer to someone who knows camera physics better than I do.

    The Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical in Sony E-mount are better than the M-mount version ! I use it on my "Leica" the Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA and the APO 35mm are top of the line, it is super sharp, great contrast and very crisp colors, works well with 61 megapixels ! For $1000 it is a bargain !
