    Detailed review of the Voigtlander APO Lanther 35mm f2 lens - Testing the VM mount lens on the Leica M240 in London. This is the new 35 APO lens from Voigtlander to compete with the new Leica 35mm APO Summicron-M lens (but much cheaper). Great review Matt! Love the new lens alert intro, the excitement of testing a new lens. 😆 I recently bought the Light Lens Lab 35mm F2 which is a replica basically of the 1st generation Summicron. I was looking at this APO 35 and APO 50 too. I wish the size was a tad smaller on the APO lenses but there's obviously a reason they jammed so many pieces of glass in there. Always great to have different lenses.

    Matt, it would be really interesting to see you test this on film as well. I know you don’t shoot slide film all that often, but I think that Ektachrome 100 with its high acutance paired with this lens, the results would be amazing. Thanks for all the videos you put out!

      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Ah yes sorry I totally forgot to mention it in the video. I shot the Leica M3 in London with TMax 400 (hi-res film though not slide) with APO for a few shots. I need to try to get another day out with it to shoot more film before it goes back. I should start a please sponsor me to shoot slide film thread as I love the look but it's so expensive I never buy it now. Ektachrome or Provia.. I think I like Provia even more (see blog post I did on those). If I get chance to shoot more film with it before it goes back I might try to do a short follow up vid or blog post.

    Thank you for not just this one, but for basically all your reviews, they (and your photos) are a pleasure to watch and I watched many reviews more than once already (overthinking which lens to buy 😉). On that note, if I may ask: have you compared the voigtlander 35 f/2 apo and nokton f/1.2 at f/2? Is the apo noticably better? Which one do you enjoy shooting models with more? The same questions apply for the 50 as well. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Please keep those reviews coming!! 🙏

You have an elegant speaking voice and timbre, give your audience a chance to embrace that, it's what sets you apart. Keep up the good work! Hi, out of all the Voigtlander and Zeiss 35mm M-Mount lenses, which one/s have the least or zero distortion? No barrel or pincushion effect when shooting at white background with black horizontal and vertical lines . I would love to know as you are probably one of the few reviewers who has so many lenses to review. Distortion-less, Sharpness and Colours in that order for me.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you see this video the APO seems to have near zero distortion. I've not tried the Zeiss version. Sharpest i'd guess APO or Distagon (not tried but hear it is very good). My 21mm and 25mm Biogons are very sharp too. I liked the APO colours too. You can see today's video for 9 more 35mm lenses but I don't cover all the topics you mention. It may give you more ideas though.

      I’ve been waiting to fill the 35mm hole in my kit for two years, waiting to see what might come along, always thought it would be Zeiss distigon t 35mm f 1.4 zm, and was saving my pennies. Now Voigtländer has come through with this, APO... I like fast lenses and struggle with the idea of f2 for a 35mm, but the APO design for the leave on camera most the time makes more sense. I have the Voigtländer 50mm F1.2 and the 21mm F1.4... if I need speed....so this fits perfect. I have a LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M for portraits, hard to focus but a very very underrated lens for the price. You might look at it...a spectacular 90 Leica lens, compact sharp and since there’s no snob appeal you get a real Leica lens at $1000 vs 6000....

    I have not tried any of the recent other comparable Voigtlander 35mm lenses, but based on specs/design alone, the 35 APO is better for two reasons: first one is APO (obviously) and the inclusion of floating-element design (FLE). Reviewers rarely mention (let alone talk about) the latter feature...FLE allows the lens to be sharp at wide apertures _at any distance_ but this makes the lens design complex...which is also why it's expensive...but it's actually a bargain considering what you pay for.

    Great review, Matt! Please, please Cosina stop to sell hoods separately with lenses! They should be included for this price! 49 mm filter diameter is also a typical CV "weird" one. Bokeh wide open reminds me on the CV 35/1.2 II wider open. Otherwise a great lens obviously. A bit bulky for a f/2 lens, but this comes with all the lens groups to reduce CA, vignetting, and improve sharpness in the corners. Similar to the Leica APO lenses, they are made for landscape/architecture shooting by delivering great sharpness as you mentioned. For portraits, did you have to smoothen the skin when this lens was used at f/2?

    I see the Skopar f2.5 a twat sharper than the other two. Look at the leather; it has more resolution.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks KJ, I watched the video again so I can answer. The reason the leather is sharper on the Skopar is it is a 2.5 lens meaning the depth of sharpest (when focused on the front of the lens) reaches far enough back to make the leather look sharper. It doesn't mean it's sharper, it's actually the softest of these 3 lenses (but still a great performer). I still use mine. (When looking at sharpness only compare the writing on the front of the lens in these photos). Hope that helps. Matt

    "Premium film" in the Leica?
    If you buy premium film for top quality lenses, you should do more.
    Precess the film in the best developer.
    Avoid push processing.
    Do not make a cocktail of developers
    Never mix the developer with coffee or aspirine.
    Do not pie into the developung tank.
    Find the best photo lab and contact the chief.
    Enlarge the negs on Forte bromide paper.
    Frame the prints behind glass.
    It is a long way for Premium quality.
