Kubota M4900 Front Axle Seal & Bearing Replacement - Take 2

  • About 3 years years ago I had to replace the seal in our M4900 Kubota tractor. I posted a video on TH-cam about it that I took with my phone. It has helped a lot of folks do the same thing with their tractors... and it helped me do the other side of mine. Today we remove and replace the axle bearing and seal in the Kubota on the other side. It was really easy and took me about an hour to do it. I did scratch my head a few times but after watching my first video, it went together quick. Thanks for watching our videos. Please consider giving us a "thumbs up"! Thanks!

    Finally ! … Best video out there on how to change axle bearings…I searched high and low for a video like this and found nothing. There were plenty on how to change seals, but this is the first I’ve seen on bearings, …exactly what I needed, …. thank you, thank you, thank you!

      Mr. Dickerson,
      I've done this repair so many times now that I may not need the video on my next repair!!! And that's why I make them, because I could not find one either! It's motivating to see that it helps others too. I hope your repair went well. I did a similar repair to my m105x in the field and ended up having to re do it again in the barn. The M4900 is much easier than the 105x. Both can be done! Thanks for your comment! I motivates me to make more videos! Kevin

      They are in there aren't they... a bit hidden too. The first time I did it, it took me a bit to find them. That's why I use a parts diagram to see all the part. Messicks.com has great online version that you can print out. Every time I do something on my tractor, I print one and take it with me. Love the comment about doing it twice. Sometimes, I wish that I only did it twice, not 3 or 4 times!... Thanks for watching. Your comment motivates me to continue making these videos. Kevin

      @@MillGapFarms it wasn't so much that I could see them or find them I didn't have them installed right.
      That little pound the shaft back tight to hold them in place was the part I was missing.
      I'm not overly experienced and missed that step.

      @MillGapFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stoney Ridge, Things happen at the most inopportune times... I'm guessing you have equipment that this happens to as well. Some things you can prevent other, you have fix it when it happens. I took the tractor out of commission for a while waiting to fix it. I knew if I drove it much I would for certain have bigger problems. Turns out this took about an hour to do and I could have done it in less time if It wasn't so windy and I was making the video. The camera kept falling over... Stay tuned for the next Kubota video, I'm going to do the M105x. Similar operation, bearing and seal too. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      JR, Its funny how close to 1k hours things start to break... I'm going to guess the technology is going to be close. I'd suggest videoing the process as you do it. Be sure to look for snap rings too. If you have not been to messicks.com or JD's website, get a parts diagram and look at it before you start. That way you know what needs to be removed and in what order. On my other Kubota I messed up a snap ring because I wasn't paying attention. Ounce of prevention sort of thing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks for the very helpful video. I just noticed oil leaking past the front axle seal on my M4900 too. I was hoping to just do the seal and o-ring, but after seeing your vid, I'm planning on replacing the bearing while I'm in there. Just wanted to double check, did you replace both the inner and outer bearings? or just the outer bearing? and how about when you did the other side of the axle? Thank you very much for your time and work, and sharing your hard won experience. Writing from Vermont, where we've got organic maple syrup flowing out of the hills, but I hope to try yours some day.

      Ethan, When I did the repair, it was the first time I had done it. After disassembling everything, I replaced all that was damaged. (this repair was so long ago that I cannot remember which parts were replaced) I didn't have any left over parts. In subsequent repairs (other side and the m105x (3 times)), I bought parts before disassembly. Not the best idea when it comes to having parts left over. I would recommend checking with your parts supplier as to whether they have them in stock and ask the next question, are they in stock at their DC (distribution center). If they are not in stock there it could take some time to get them. I don't know if the local dealer can check the parts of another local dealer but, that's also a question to be asked. You may have to do some legwork yourself to find some parts. If the parts are not available you may want to order them before you pull everything a part. There is a good chance you'll be doing the other side at some point and can use any left over parts you have. If this were the second time you are doing it, I would disassemble and order what I needed only. Couple other things I learned, you don't need kubota gear oil. Walmart's version works fine. Get a spanner tool, it will help you remove the snap ring. If you catch the leak quick enough, there will be less damage. The longer you drive with a leak the more that is going to get ground up inside. I wish I could show you the 105x, I had to replace the housing too. You most likely don't need the o-ring on the hub. I bought one but did not need to replace it. If you have any other questions, let me know. You can email me through our website www.millgapfarms.com. One day I hope to post the video about the 105x repair. That repair took a few weeks to complete because of how many parts were damaged and many were not in stock at the DC. Thanks for watching and commenting. We have plenty of syrup in stock this time of year and would enjoy sharing some with you! Kevin

    Not sure if your setup is different but I lost the exact same bearing on my L3130. It filled the whole knuckle with metal...in the middle of changing ALL the bearings. Did you pull the cap on the bottom and check to see where the metal went?

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin, I love the engineering of Kubota tractors! They are fairly simple to work on. Here is a good reason for me to do these videos... Because I can't remember, sitting here in front of my computer, if there is a space below where I can drain or check things. I do recall finding most all of the pieces, including the bearings. If you catch the problem fast enough and stop, you will find whole bearings... let go a bit, say the drive from the lower part of the farm back to the barn... you may not find the pieces parts or what you find is a lot of metal chips. Thankfully the gears are harder than the bearings. So far, I've done both axles on my m4900 and one on the m105x. They are very similar with the 105 having an extra set of gears in it. Which will catch a finger is a heart beat. Thanks for watching and commenting. The tractor is still going strong at 600 hours, I maybe good for another 4-500 before I have to do this process again! Kevin

    As soon as the oil starts to leak out tear it down! Usually means your bearing has failed. It can tear up a lot of parts if you don't address immediately. Gets real expensive. I know!

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! As soon as you see a leak, stop and be ready to do it in the field. The longer it takes to get it to the barn or shop, the more damage is possible. Having done this repair more than 4 times, I feel confident saying that you do have a little time to get it to the barn. not 30 minutes of drive time but some time. I've also done this repair in the field. That was not fun but an easy repair. Doing it in the shop/barn, much easier! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Matthew! Comments like yours helps us all! What were the symptoms that made you realize you had a bearing go out in the hub? I have a M125X, and just recently both front hub seals starting leaking while driving it in -40 Deg weather. Not much of a leak, and cannot hear any weird noises

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan,
      - 40. I don't know what to think about that...how about "NO"... The seals could be at the end of their life and rigid. On the larger tractors, it's hard to hear the problem. It's possible but unlikely you could feel the problem, if you were driving on a smooth surface. I would ask someone to stand outside of the tractor and drive and turn at the same time. You may hear some crunching. If they just started leaking you might be experiencing what I experienced and the point of initial failure... that being the part that holds the bearing in the bearing, I call it a carriage assembly, has failed. Next you will get bigger pieces of the bearing itself. You don't want it to go that far. Pull one side down and look at it. It is very similar to the m4900. There are more gears in there, watch your fingers. Messicks.com will show you the breakdown of the parts. Chances are you will need the bearing and the axle seal. And maybe the o ring around the housing. Mine were not bad but since I was there, i replaced them. If you want to send me a photo go to our website and email us. millgapfarms.com. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Wish we could post pics in the comments on this platform. But my indication of problems was a loose hub and then I forgot about it until the housing broke and the entire thing fell off. A piece of the defective bearing broke off and dropped into the gears forcing the housing outward until it broke.

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could you elaborate on what you had to cut off with a torch? This is the second axle bearing I installed in this tractor and it took me and about an hour. Probably a bit longer because it was very windy and I was videoing it. I used a press to push out seal mainly because I forgot how it was positioned in the housing. I probably could have stepped on the seal vs hitting with a hammer. I was scared I would mess something up. A little background, I bought this tractor used with less than 100 hours. It's about 2000 model and I have beat it up in all conditions possible. I have not do any fluid changes on it until this point. In the first video, I did it in the driveway, much like I did the M105x, where I did that one in the field where I was making hay. That was definitely interesting. Soon I'll do the other side of that one too. All being said, in my case, I presented what I experienced. I would never try to lead someone down a path that would get them in trouble. This is why for the m105x, I did not pull the head and try to fix it myself when I recently had trouble with it. Thanks for watching and especially comment. I would enjoy learning more about your experience with your tractor.

      Wiregrass Hobby Farming, I'm not sure why I didn't see your response. First let me apologize for this delay. I did not experience the same problem that you guys did. I'm about to check the other side for a crunch sound. Our tractor has 1200 hours on it. Maybe yours had more hours and wear. I don't doctor my videos. You can see that when it came to the stump jumper on the Woods cutter. That was a bear and took me almost 2 days to remove. It wasn't easy going back on either. My goal is not to fudge things. If it is easy then that's what happened. I'm not monetized and I get nothing from making these videos. I may never get a dime. But each time I need to repeat an operation, I can at least watch how I did it the first time. I hope others get some benefit from it too. Thanks for commenting.
