    Did you know In Westeros there are tales of men with green skin? Thousands of years ago, when the first men crossed the land bridge to Westeros, they quickly settled the land, building farms and homesteads and in doing so they had cut down weiroods, which were the trees sacred to the Old Gods. An act which soon brought them into war with an elder race already present on the Continent, the Children of the Forest who worshiped the Old Gods. During this time it is said that the wars went on until the earth ran red with the blood of both races, but eventually a peace was bartered when the First Men and The Children forged a treaty known as the Pact amidst the weirwood groves on an island a sacred to the Old Gods and the Children known as the Gods Eye. It is said faces were carved into all the weirwoods within the Island So that the gods could bear witness to the historic agreement,and the sacred order of the green men was created and entrusted with guardianship over the island to tend to its sacred weirwoods groves and protect the Island. It is believed that the order of Green Men are still living within the isle to this day but the isle is so well protected few have ever successfully traveled there to see for themselves.
    According to the Worldbook and Old Nan the tales of the green men claim they have green skin and in some versions they may also have antlers like a stag. Though most maesters believe the tales are a conflation of men who wore green clothing and horned headresses. In bran II of a Storm of Swords he hears a tale of a mystery knight with a weirwood device on his shield and wonder if he was a guardian of the Gods Eye
    “the mystery knight was short of stature, and clad in ill-fitting armor made up of bits and pieces. The device upon his shield was a heart tree of the old gods, a white weirwood with a laughing red face." "Maybe he came from the Isle of Faces," said Bran. "Was he green?" In Old Nan's stories, the guardians had dark green skin and leaves instead of hair. Sometimes they had antlers too” A Storm of Swords - Bran II

    I have missed your videos so much!
    The description of Garth always sounded like a fancy description for a tree & its greenseer to me. Green hair, green hands, reborn every spring, with antlers sounds like a tree and the king that was situated on the throne sounds like the greenseer.

    You just blew my mind. I always take the things the maester’s say with pounds of salt, but I only thought of the green skin as an allegory for greenseers wearing ‘skins’, not an actual physical thing, but this makes complete sense, and ties everything together! It also ties into something I’ve been mulling over for a while, too, which is the use of oaks as stand-ins for weirwoods. I don’t remember which castle(s) use one as proxies, but I know it’s at least one. Also, the pact… “By oak and iron” 🤔 With their similar leaves, this has me wondering if the weirwoods might be ‘corrupted’ oak trees. What a video 👏

    Another amazing video Amanda! I wonder if the trees became firey and red after being invaded by Azor Ahai, a person strongly associate with fire and blood? The Winterfell heart tree is also described as “a blaze of flame” and the Starks share lots of parallels with Azor Ahai as well being the probable saviours of the previous long night

      I think it may have gotten that way after the hammer. But in terms of garth, and the grey king it was have occurred at the time of the killing if nissa nissa. I know it hard to follow as this being a pivot point for the trees but ill try to do a video on it at some point.

    These are always such stellar videos! As someone with really great attention to detail, do you think Patchface could be a squisher? (It sounds wacky I know)
    Everyone at storm's end assumes he's the slave Stephon Baratheon described because the marks on his face. However patchface doesn't match the descriptions at all, he's not nimble or clever, he's pale white, cold to the touch and flabby, just like the descriptions of a squisher. He was also found naked, which is strange because Stephon Baratheon would likely have clothed the child he freed, but I think it's more likely that the boy on the beach never had clothes to begin with. Squisher children might just be naked under the water. He likely hasn't lost his memory or his wits, he might be totally fine. He never speaks of being on a ship or in Valantas, not because he can't remember but because he's never been there. He speaks about the sea all the time, because as a squisher that's all he knows.
    He has a strange bouncing walk like he doesn't know how to walk on land, he sorta bounds about like someone who only knows how to walk underwater. Lastly I couldn't find any descriptions of the motley on his face. Cressen describes him as having a "patched and piebald head". We assume that his red and green patches are tatoos and if they're tatoos they're likely diamond shaped like motley, but "piebald patches" aren't straight lined marks, they're the blotchy markings of an animal. Like the markings on a horse. (although the books don't describe them well)
    Patchface has predictions of the future kinda like a greenseer. The children of the forest have yellow eyes but the eyes of greenseers are green or sometimes red. We never get a description of patches eyes. but the markings on his face, which I think are actually birthmarks are green and red like the coloring of a greenseer. (this is a stretch, I know.)

    • @TheDisputedLands
      @TheDisputedLands  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, I think the stories of the squishers comefrom somewhere and I've got some thoughts but haven't fully developed. I have a video on my thoughts on patchdace where I discuss the grey kings mermaid wife. Its in my ironborn myth and legend series. I think he died and was brought back. The thoughts about him being naked is an interesting observation though. Not sure how he might have lost his clothes unless his body was looted.

    Always great to get content from you Amanda. Anything you produce is absolutely top notch ; personally i'll take quality over quantity everyday of the week. Well done yet again and some great points here.
    I'm absolutely on board that the Weirwoods' appearance could have possibly been transformed from an original state. Their current look to me is unnatural , seemingly altered and tortured even. Many possibilities as to the why. Perhaps human inclusion / infiltration into the Weirwood net corrupted it and / or the introduction of blood sacrifice ; one / both or much more beyond that etc. Perhaps not very GRRM-like but could be at one point it was a somewhat more benign magical system ; more like a symbiotic harmonious relationship with wood nymphs who had access to a shared consciousness and associated abilities via the trees. Clearly a much darker turn since then if that was ever the case. As the vid implies i do think the Ww's appearance and certain clues you highlighted could be suggestive of a transformative moment / process with the Wws.

    • @TheDisputedLands
      @TheDisputedLands  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I believe that the hammer of the waters caused it. The ironborn legend mentions the "storm god" lashing down with a thunderbolt. And asha recalls a tale where the greenseers "turned the trees to warriors", and if we recall what we know about ironborn religion ravens are the creatures of the Storm God. Meaning that the storm God is likely congruent with the Old gods and the greenseers. So in one tale the storm God throws down a thunderbolt causing a change in the tree and in the other tale the greenseers "turn" the trees to warriors. But it was also the greenseers who called down the hammer of the waters. So I'm inclined to lean in that direction. In my fratricidal clues video I discuss the connections between the storm God and the religion of the old gods.

    • @AndrewK23777
      @AndrewK23777 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@TheDisputedLands i like it, very possible and i find that very plausible. I def agree with you that the Weirwoods seem to have been altered / corrupted from their original state regardless. A lot of clues around that in the vid and the current Wws' look certainly seem unnatural and even tortured to me.
      HotW makes sense and i do not dispute it ; despite the skepticism with the tentative particulars we are given with the HotW / aspects of it overall. But your theory def works , i view most of those Ironborn mythos around that event as somewhat of an origin story. Origin in terms of the HotW being the cataclysm that mostly destroyed their previous lands and isolated / cut them off physically and culturally from the First Men (which they likely started as). Such an event would be so emphatic and impactful and basically gave rise to their culture imo. So makes sense they would build myths / a religion and culture around that - the sea / water etc. Your theory certainly works here. The Weirwoods / old gods being the source of the HotW regardless and given the trauma and impact the HotW caused to the Ironborn makes sense their myths would view & depict such magic / source of that event as evil. And of course what would be required (sacrifice) to cause such destruction could have very well resulted in the corruption / alteration of the Weirwoods.

    Weirwoods have always reminded me of the Lovecraftian Fungi From Yuggoth. Garth being a green man who planted them is like George invoking the classic sci-fi trope of "Little Green Men from Mars" - CotF are the little men, Green Men just Extraterrestrial men in general - planting alien trees on Earth, like a star traversing Johnny Appleseed.

    Ive long suspected a change had occurred with the weirwoods at some point. I think it's strange that we never hear any reference to them flowering or fruiting or anything, and that many real-world trees require certain seasonal cycles to trigger physiological changes such as fruiting. So perhaps what actually affected them (and probably most plant species, realistically) was the seasons becoming out of balance.

    Been a while, grateful to have more. One of the best.
    A couple of thoughts. I'm totally on board with the green hand being an evolved display of a green leaf. The fence I sit on is, did they change, or is there a third tree? A gold tree with green leaves that's a better match to Renly's armour. I have long wondered if Hearttree was a blunted Golden Heart tree, evolved after they lost their gold colour.
    There may also be another myth that might explain relate to tree changes. The dragon birth myth. The dragons drank from the sun. With Shade and Weir you have both aspects of the moon, but a gold tree would be more of a sun tree. However, if you had a sun/gold tree and something was done or taken and it turned white/black it might fit as drinking power from the sun. Storms and dragons are classically related in real myth. Becoming grey would tie in the Grey King. If storms and dragons are related in asoiaf then he taunts a dragon that burns a tree. This might go either way turning it black or changing leaves to red. Red leaves lead to Fall and the Shade trees suggest Evening so they both symbolically suggest a lead to darkness/winter.
    On the Grey King. Are you certain he defeated Ygg? I ask because that isn't explicit. He made his ship, yes, but it doesn't say exactly that he was it's enemy. These tales were writen down by the Andels and it may have been them that thought Ygg was evil. Galan Whitestaff is a suggestion that they may originally have trusted in weirwood. Along with the white driftwood crowns which also suggest it.
    Why do I think we need to consider the Ironborn and Grey King in relation to the pact? It's an island. If neither the CotF or First men had the tech, how did they get to the island?

    So my thesis following this video is; that ancient people consumed weirwood paste (or something similar), that would eventually begin turning them into trees. The antlers being the branches sprouting from their head as they kept growing. Basically a sort of floral version of the God-Emperor Leto Atreides II.

    • @TheDisputedLands
      @TheDisputedLands  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've got a similar belief, but I think the depictions and tales are probably of greenseers sitting on the weirwood throne and the "antlers" are likely the roots behind them.

    Tbh the green hand and skin just seems like GRRM was sitting there thinking, "Hmm, how can I let the reader know that Garth is the best gardener in history? Well, a green thumb means you're a great gardener... I'VE GOT IT!"

    Your video gave me one of those moments where everything shifts and suddenly I can't believe how long I went not realising something. How did I miss all the references to green in CotF/First Men culture when the most important trees to them are red?!? (It's like that moment when it finally occurred to me that the Black Gate isn't actually black but white...)
    Perhaps this is why greenseers can have either green or red eyes... a hint from George that they are actually the same, from a certain point of view?
    In any event, the colour switching theme is interesting to consider alongside George's quote that the hero is just the villain seen from the other side. It's like a visual metaphor for how heroes and villains, red and green, black and white, are not really opposite forces at all but actually the same, just viewed under different circumstances. ("As mutable as flame..." perhaps?)
    I don't know. I'm rambling, but I feel like there's a wider theme here that I'm not clever enough to properly grasp.
    It's a familiar feeling. :D
    Anyway, brilliant video as always.

    that "something happened" event was the long night caused by the moon meteor/asteroid. That's what I saw the storm god throwing a bolt of lightning signifying in Iron Island mythology. Could have been the bloodstone emperor, the moon breaking, the hammer of the waters, the breaking of the arm of Dorne - it's all the same event and it caused the long night. Different cultures have come up with different explanations for it. It definitely had something to do with what turned the leaves from green to red, and I believe that's when they began carving faces too, and it also coincides with the first accounts of demons (in essos) and white walkers (in the north of westeros). The pact was clearly to ally against the white walkers during the long night.
    I always thought the grey king was a mariner from the Island of Leng (a green man from there). Garth was also a green man. Green men is just an ancient sea-faring and rare race that reside on sacred islands. Referred to on Leng as "the old ones" who reside underground and sometime demand human sacrifice in the form of all foreigners. There was also accounts of a lot of human sacrifice on the isle of faces.

    This is a great video! I love the idea of weirwood paste originally being green, and weirwoods turning white (as a side note, what the grey king story leaves out is who or what threw "fire" at Ygg, my theory is that this is an early dragonlord. if dragons were even bigger than balerion but unknown to westeros because dragons were only recently created, what would look more like a sky god than a dragon with a nearly invisible dragonrider? what is lightning but fire from a god). There's also an idea that the arrival of dragons and dragonlords is what might have united the first men and the children of the forest. maybe the god's eye is the only place that still has green weirwoods? and if the pact was to merge with the trees, then branches growing out of a green person would look awfully similar to antlers.

    I wonder if the tree leaves were green prior to them having the pact with the first men. Like maybe they were white bark, green leaves. I don't remember if we have ever gotten a description of the CoF's blood. But what if it was/is green to match the leaves? Then when they made the pact, to symbolize humans involvement with their worship/way of life the leaves changed from the magic of the pact because human blood is red. I mean, its very poetic that the trees from Essos are the inverted colors of the (current) weirwood trees.

    A little late to this, but I was just rewatching this video and thought od something. You read the quote about Renly wearing the "green of summer" (or similar). And I realized - the color of leaves in autumn is red, like the wierwoods. The trees used to be in their summer phase, but now they are red like in autumn. Like "winter is coming" and all that

      I'm pretty sure it had to do with the hammer of the waters, I'm thinking about making a followup video. But in an Asha chapter she remembers a tale where the greenseers "turn the trees to warriors". And it was the storm God who lashed down with a thunderbolt that caused the tree to burn. In the ironborn religion the storm God is congruent with the old gods. Which is why ravens are creatures of the storm god... I go more in depth in my fratricidal clues video on the nature of the storm God, but all the arrows are pointing to the hammer of the waters.

    Yeah, maybe. But if garth was a god who wandered westeros planting weirwoods thousands of years before leading the first men to westeros, I would have to think that he would have warned not to cut down the heart trees. I don’t envy grrm, having to write one of the most anticipated books ever. But if he just did it. There is so much left in the cannon to explore. I also think the most power of the crannog men green seers are sent to the isle of face to join the green men. I mean, if it is actually only men, how do they reproduce? Maybe their immortal? I don’t know, great video thanks 🙏

    When people talk about Garth I think people misunderstand what he represents, a misconception. I could very well be wrong and you are right.
    I don't think Garth is god or being of the woods or trees at all, when you look at house Gardner, and the way he is described, he is linked to the humans. The children of the forest are not interested in him and denied him. Their alternative was the wood. Which is very strange when people think he is from the woods. They worship their ancestors in the Weirwood and in in creatures who provide for them. Their gods of the forest. If he could plant Weirwoods, they wouldn't deny him.
    Garth is instead a fertility god and of *agriculture.* They keep talking about his seed giving to what sounds like a settled society. It would make sense if he was a woods god if they kept being a hunter gather society and people. But he's associated with farms, orchards, plantations and giving daughters children, not woods or hunter gatherer. The green hand is like a green thumb. Like being good at making plants grow in gardens, allotments, kitchen gardens etc. The thing associated with farming, is the clearing of land. Farms to give humans a steady food supply, without needing to travel. Which would mean the creation of a civilization with villages, cities, castles, domains of lords, etc. that comes from the surplus labor and specialization a settled society brings. It's in contrast to the dothraki who are nomad, martial, hunters, foragers and herders at best. They use tents, not castles for lords to reside in and protect land and the serf farmers under them when they're under threat.
    In a way without saying it out loud Garth is a tree killer too from that clearling of land neceassary to make farms. Considering that in a way he has more in common with the Grey king than you might think. Or he left it to him while he created the farms after.
    That's what the first men did when they came to Westeros over the land bridge and what got them into conflict with the children of the forest. Cutting down trees. I imagine the childern would not look fondly on him at all. They have every reason to hate him. I don't think he is affiliated with them or the green men on the isle of faces at all.
