I currently have the M1 Pro 16", I'm a software engineer, I watch a lot of 4K content, photoshop, MS Office etc etc, nothing massively heavy, but coming from my 2015 15" with AMD Graphics, my God is it fast... the fans have never once kicked in, everything is instant, i can't physically imagine anything better than the 16" Pro, its just perfect in every way

Yeah I went with the 16” m1 pro as well, just upgraded to 1tb ssd. It is an amazing machine, and works very well with external displays. I’d much rather have the MacBook then the studio…although I might be tempted by a iMac that had the same screen tech as the MacBooks…. I can also confirm, as a video editor, that should you ever push your MacBook hard, it will keep up just fine. I have no issue editing 4-6 streams of 4K60p hevc video on it, and while rendering out the video, I have another 8 or so apps running. If Apple could convince AAA game studios to optimize for Apple silicon, it would be an 11/10 machine.

@@Alperic27 If game developers can optimize their games for consoles with far less power, they can optimize for apple silicon as well. I’m not a developer, or a programmer, so when it comes to metal / Vulcan etc I’m not an expert. I’m well aware that these machines are designed with content creation front and center - however, Apple has an opportunity here when it comes to capturing the gaming segment. Their machines might not rival the top end PCs, but the idea of having the best content creation machines with some decent and highly optimized gaming options is an intriguing one. Now, if you find my opinion tiresome, then ignore it - but if it is being echoed, then I guess it is a popular one.

@@winterwolfryan apple’s revenue on gaming is more than Nintendo, Microsoft, Activision, Blizzard and Sony combined with out making any games 😂 - while I agree they may sell more hardware if gamers bought macs. I don’t think they are in a huge rush to have more gamers on their computers because they don’t make additional money off the games. Their margins are way better on the App Store with low/no cost of goods. But if they had an App Store just for games on the Mac with AAA titles than Apple would be more enticed to earn a portion of games sold.

In your comparisons you skipped one common scenario: moving up to the Studio from another desktop where the peripherals are already paid for. That's a significant savings and a loss of mere seconds in the benchmarks you cited. A worthwhile tradeoff IMO.

I upgraded from a 2015 15inch Macbook Pro to the M1 Max with 32 gigs of ram and a 24 core GPU. This darn thing is CRAZY fast. I use a program called Topaz Gigapixel to upscale my artwork for large prints and things. It was pretty hard on my 2015. Typical upscale render times was around 10 minutes for mural sized projects. M1 Max laughed at it and upscaled it in 10 SECONDS. Not nan nada fan kicked on the entire time unlike my 2015. I am sooooo happy I bought this thing. ❤️

Blooming might be easier to demonstrate on black backgrounds. But the opposite is also true. Reading black text on bright backgrounds (any news web site, text editor…) makes black text appear kinda soft, since the bright background blooms into the text, which I’m finding a bit unfortunate for the reading experience.

This is exactly why I'm so excited for a M1 Mac mini with the Pro chip. I feel the standard M1 is great for most users and that the Pro chip will satisfy most people who just want a bit more CPU/GPU performance and added I/O options giving the best bang for the buck. I feel like you have to be a very demanding user to even need the Max chip let alone the Ultra. I feel like Apple knows this too and has held off what should be an easy hardware release with the higher end mini until they have made as much as possible off the Studio mania.

I beg to strongly disagree. I used a 15" MacBook Pro as a desktop and portable for the past 8 1/2 years. To make the laptop ergonomic on a desk, I had to add an external keyboard, mouse, track pad and 24" 4K display. This was OK, but still slightly awkward. On the go the 15" MacBook Pro was large and heavy. To me the 15" MacBook was a compromise on the desk and a compromise on the go. It played both roles, but non really good.
For the cost of a well equipped 16" MacBook Pro you get a Mac Studio with the same specs _and_ a MacBook Air. I do not count the cost of keyboard, mouse, track pad and desk top display, as I would add them to the laptop anyway, when using the laptop on the desk. But this split gives me an excellent desktop, the Mac Studio, and a the MacBook Air as a really light and portable laptop.

I’m in a bit of a strange place right now: I currently own a 2017 27-inch iMac that will probably be replaced in late 2023-2024 and I’m not sure if I will want to get a 16-inch MBP or Mac Studio then. The MBP has a gorgeous HDR display highly relevant to me and is portable, but the Mac Studio has a ton of ports and I hate video editing on small laptop displays anyway. But to get a good HDR display you either have to use a 4K TV as an auxiliary monitor or spend out the nose to get something like a Pro Display XDR. The laptop life you mention is one I am wary of, but I think the bundled in HDR display and ability to occasionally make mobile are very attractive aspects of the laptop.

This would be true if the scenario is you are limited with that budget and you mostly work from home and do a bit of travelling. If on the other hand, you do a lot of travelling than staying at home, and have a need for a powerful device, the 16" is the choice - for it has power and good screen size compared to the air. This is based on my experience as I have all the macbook screen variants from the 12" to the 16" and the mac mini. I pick up the macbook or air if it's just for the sake of travelling and less work but definitely the 16" for travelling & seriously working (weeks / months away from home).
So, if you need to budget and more likely to be out from home, MBP 16" is the right choice.

I also have a base studio that is great and a tad faster than my M1 Pro laptop but the laptop is still my favorite of all time. The Studio is doing what I want it to do though, it gives me the ability to leave everything hooked up at all times so I can just sit and manipulate or record whatever I feel but one reason I purchased it was because I take the MBP everywhere. I'm not sure which is better the screen or the battery life... the battery life is what really allowed me to finally use a Laptop as a laptop.

There is one major drawback for engineers (relying on numerical analysis software) with the new ARM based Macs that few seems to be aware of. The ARM architecture do not support extended precision floating points (only double precision as the best) in contrast to Intel. So why is that even an issue? Well, professional numeric simulation/analysis req the higher precision in intemediary calculations to assure precision in the end result.
At least one major simulation package I'm aware of have stopped supporting OSX because of this issue (since the software will not produce identical numerical result if it is run on an Intel PC compared with an ARM based PC .). Due to performance doing these calculations entirely in SW is not an option.
Hopefully future version of the ARM architecture will support this since otherwise a lot of pro-level math/numerical analysis SW will no longer be available for OSX. This is the major reason I'm unable to upgrade to an M1 MBP.

Which is a shame, as Mac is few tweaks in UI from becoming XXIst century Unix workstation. Intel, true, does have many specialized blocks in hardware but software support is abbysmal. Just look at tensorflow - build with MKL and for given CPU gives 3x-10x improvement in performance in selected operations.

Not saying that it is better than the MacBook Pro M1 Max; however, as you said I can save $500 ( I have a mouse and keyboard already so I can save more actually ). But then, the saved 500 dollars can help me get an iPad easier since I have a limited budget. I am currently a student and I think an iPad is almost a must for me, but I do want a powerful mac machine as well. If you do big music productio sessions and you have a lot of tracks and want low buffer settings to play midi controller as your tracks get bigger I think the ultra is better. if you are doing film scoring with tons of string libraries the extra ram is great too . also if you are rendering 3d fx for films. each Frame adds up and can take hours those extra seconds can turn in to hours if you are not using real time render. I'm a musician who has been make his own videos and also shooting freelance I have the MacBook 16 m1max 10core 32gpu and a 2019 12core Mac Pro with 96gb of ram .I'm going to wait for the new Mac Pro. I import in LrC more than 10X more than i export. So that CPU core improvement is worth a LOT more than your testing shows, because it saves a LOT of time because of the 20 cores versus 10. Also, yes, while the MBP is great for travel (I have the M1 Pro 16 GB iteration), it is not the machine I want when I do most of my work, which is a desktop with more ports and a 32-inch 4k screen. So, for me, spending less on a sometimes travel laptop (admitted, the BEST laptop I have ever owned) and more for an everyday desktop with power to spare, is a better option. The math for other people may vary, of course. Everyone should do his/her own math.

only reason the MacBook performed bit better then Mac studio is bcoz the MacBook has a battery in it. having battery for the processor works as a buffer for the input power from mains which eliminates any frequency resonance for processor clock. doesn't matter how better u design the power supply, under load it will suffer some hickups which will result in minor input frequencies instead of super steady DC input like MacBook battery.

Do you guys really believe that people who buy a Mac Studio will need to buy a keyboard, mouse and monitor? Any comparison between these machines must exclude peripherals. It is likely that most Mac Studio buyers will already have the peripherals they need to do their jobs. Price and benchmark testing are the lazy way to review and/or compare machines. In no has Max Tech shown that the MacBook Pro is a Mac Studio “killer”. Both are great machines and a great buy depending upon what your work flow requires.

The only negative point I would give is the keyboard could have a little bit more resistance because they’re a little bit weak and we can easily press next keys without notice it when typing very fast. It’s not yet to the standard we were used to back in the 2010 era…

great comparison between these products. Maybe you can add some test using machine learning or deep learning to train dataset in python, which is also a common use for data scientists. Like most people would buy the high-end graphics card (e.g. RTX 3090) to accelerate the process, maybe the M1 Ultra with more GPU core can also do the same. Looking forward to your future tests and you guys are awesome!

I like the comparisons as far as performance. However, a desktop vs. a laptop comparison is also ignoring some things. While having a laptop as a main computer, how many people invest in a keyboard and mouse/trackpad plus monitor? That's not included in your cost comparison. How about an external dock? Additionally, someone that is building out a desktop is probably someone that is not looking for the same power from their laptop as far as portability. Only a small percentage of people need the best of the best for both experiences - as in they'll be doing major photo and video editing on a small screen.
Yes, a laptop that can match the specs of the Mac Studio is nice for someone that needs to choose one or the other. However, I would argue that there are people that prefer to have a desktop as their main machine and use laptops or even tablets as their preferred portable devices. It all comes down to budget, so in the case of this video I'd agree a laptop is the best compromise. I do like the info about the bottleneck in the M1 Ultra, but I'll never get to the point of needing an Ultra anyway.
