    You don't need to manually map all the individual CC channels in that way, you can just click the "setup" button Sub37 Editor plugin and then set the "MIDI INPUT" and "MIDI OUTPUT' to be the Moog Sub37, then everything is automatically synced between the editor and the hardware :) So you load a patch in the editor, it will load in the hardware and vice versa or you turn the cutoff on the hardware, it will turn the software cutoff etc.

      can you explain this a little further? im having issues setting up the whole thing as i don't want to map all CC channels manually... What you just said is exactly what i need. In Logic its like plug and play with da normal midi channel but in Ableton it seems a bit of a struggle for me tbh.
      My current setup: I have Ableton Live 9.7.5 on OS X High Sierra.
      Moog Sub37 right next to me connected via USB
      Komplete Kontrol MKII S49 also connected via USB.
      UA Apollo Twin Duo MKII Interface. (Line connection between Moog and Input 1 of the Apollo)
      I'm getting sound. Thats good.
      The Moog internal Arp/Sequencer is synced to my project tempo via MIDI Clock. Works also.
      When i load a sequence preset on the Moog and press one key the Sequence plays. When i press the same key on my Komplete kontrol only the first note of the Moog Seq plays. I think this is because it gets and sends midi through the same channel right?
      When i create a long midi note (e.g. F#) in Ableton which should have the same effect of me pressing and holding F# on the Moog only the first note of the sequence plays again. I think i messed up the whole midi mapping thing or configured it the wrong way.
      Further in Logic i was able to create a new midi pattern and the moog played it. When i recorded and touched one knob on the moog the automation in Logic automatically recognized which CC Channel i touched. Thats what you said is possible in Ableton tho.
      When i create a midi pattern in Ableton my moog plays it except for sequences. When i record and change the cutoff e.g. on the moog nothing happens.
      What i want:
      I want to create midi files in Ableton and let the moog play them correctly.
      I want the ability to use my komplete kontrol keyboard also instead of turning around and playing on the moog. (This works in logic automatically)
      I want to hit the record button, touch some knobs on my moog and Ableton should recognize which CC Channel im currently using so that im able to work on that automations in Ableton.
      Sorry for that long text here tho but i couldn't find anything anywhere in the web so you're like my last hope hahah.
      Thanks in advance dude.

      I Figured a way the automations work without mapping by creating a midi channel only and setting the input to Moog Sub37 All Channels and the Output to Moog Sub37 Ch.1 which is the one im sending it out on. Now i can hear all sequences and stuff and the automations i make on the moog are listed in the midi envelope in Ableton. The only thing thats not working now is that i can use my Komplete Kontrol keyboard to play the moog.

      @rdean150 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But does Ableton record knob twists while you play as automation that you can see & tweak later? Sub 37 and the Editor do work well together out of the box but for full recording/editing power in a project you'd need the DAW to integrate tightly with that.

  • @ClandestineMonarchy
    @ClandestineMonarchy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    you can also synch the editor with the moog as you've done by making the midi settings and then add the automatable parameters through the configure button. Also, automation of this kind is more interesting in the arrangement as CC's can always be automated in clip, you don't need the VST for that.

      great and your most welcome if you have a particular question just ask and i will time permitting create a tutorial. I dont have the prophet but yes workflow is the same. The key in these external synths is to create an ableton external instrument and then you can just drop the ext inst on the track with all ins and outs and midi already made.

    Let's say you wanted to use multiple presets of the moog with one song. How would you set up your routing? Send to an audio channel? Freeze flatten. What is the fastest best way when producing?

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a matter of choice, I personally would setup the Sub 37 as an external instrument and set the preset then record, then change the preset and do the next section. I wouldn't but you could try to continually record and send a program change message to the sub 37 but that will then depend on the specs of your pc and however your midi is setup. I have steered away from my DAW's and doing much more in standalone mode with MPC live, Octatrack and synths. Nevertheless everything youve said is valid too.

  • @spicereynolds

    i am sorry, if this is a noob question, but i am new to analog synthesis. i am very interested in the sub(sequent)37 tho. so, the Filter and every other knob n the hardwar are analog. the analog filter on the hardware is being moved by an automation in the software? or does the editor plugin emulate the hardware filter.? i mean: the hardware filter doesnt move, because its not motorized...so, how does it actually move?

  • @anzemarinic4427
    @anzemarinic4427 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Peter, Thank You for the wonderful tutorial. Saved me lots of time. :) Had some problems actually afterwards. I mapped a M4L MIDI LFO to the filter knob of the Sub 37 to do automated oscillations and ableton just became so buggy. The view would jump from any channel to the sub 37 channel by itself. Any thought on thats? Thanks

  • @MadelnMachines
    @MadelnMachines 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I assumed with software editors you didn't really need to map the cc controls as the editor would do it. Can't you just hit record and tweak away and all the midi data just gets recorded without assigning anything? Is there a better way of recording automation so when it loops, it doesn't overwrite what you just automated?

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed you can do it the way you suggest but its not ideal, the software engineers at Moog recommend doing the mapping so that the data corresponds to the parameter being automated.

    • @MadelnMachines
      @MadelnMachines 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that was part of the point of the vst - to give you named automation. Is the big lag in response and when your mouse goes crazy down to your video capture software?

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes it was lag due to the cpu.

    • @rodzeroher
      @rodzeroher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works that way too. You don't need to map, but the way it is set up in the video the problem is the plugin doesn't get the data from the HW, because the HW needs a couple of MIDI ports for proper connectivity and they are being used by the external instrument. So the best way to do it is to have the moog connected through normal midi cables and the USB MIDI.

    • @voliteon
      @voliteon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @rodzeroher no - that is just completely incorrect. USB can carry midi. You don't need to have both midi cables and USB plugged in.

    Thanks for the great video ! One recurring question I can't find the answer to is this: in case of multitracking, is there a way to have one sound preset per track ? It seems we can only open the editor once at a time for a whole session so every track has the same setting, whereas I would like to have a bass setting on track 1, a lead on track 2, etc., so one Moog setting per track. Any idea ? Thanks !

    • @BIG_PASTA
      @BIG_PASTA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plassou It is not a multi timbral synth, meaning it can only play one sound at a time. In order to do what you want, you would have to create a sound on one track, record it as Audio, and continue on that process

    Im having a problem getting ableton to pick up the cc within the midi mapping window? I own a Sub Phatty rather than a 37. I have got the editor and the Sub itself talking to each other so when I move the editor cutoff it is being affected and if I move the hardware cutoff the editor is moving. In your window the filter cc is 19, mine does not appear at all. Great video, Any help would be much appreciated.

      In live there is a hidden feature PluginAutoPopulateThreshold, that will automatically populate all the mappable parameters in the 3rd party plugin. Midi and audio record perfectly and are in sync and can be recorded at the same time. Cheers

    • @PabloZym
      @PabloZym 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is pointless, totally agree with you @Marlix Basicneed, the editor is exactly for that, it must have all the assignments already done. In my case the sub37 isn't working properly since it doesn't pick up the lanes automaticly when touching a knob in the hardware, I need to click on the intended knob from the editor for Ableton to recognize it, I don't know why is happening, but nothing to do with manual MIDI assignments, actually, I also have the Minitaur and the editor doing that without any issue and without any assignment, like it is intended.

    Hi!
    Thank you for a great video.
    Can you set up Ableton and the Moog Sub 37 so the Moog will receive a BPM from Ableton to use in for instance arpeggiator or step sequencer function?

    • @tonybucks5709
      @tonybucks5709 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can, it's very easy to do, just go into live preferences and pick the MIDI panel, you then have to select "track, sync and remote" on the MIDI input. The Moog will go into slave or Master clock, you also have to go into MIDI setup of the actual Moog hardware.

    • @tonybucks5709
      @tonybucks5709 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deanthemachine hi, well, first thing is to turn on the "sync" button on the arpeggiator, that will always keep the tempo in sync. (slave or master are used for: master tempo is a DAW software or hardware that controls the BMP of all devices and slave is a device of DAW software that follows the tempo, from a Master, that's very easy). With that being said, yes you can save the patches, patterns with dedicated LFO in sync and i totally understand what you have said, since in the beginning i have found myself in the same situation, trying to synch the LFO with the actual synth while playing. A Laptop would help a lot during a performance, because once you connect the Moog via USB and play the "sync" button on the arpeggiator, everything is set to clock in perfect timing.

    • @tonybucks5709
      @tonybucks5709 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deanthemachine if the tempo is coming from the master (laptop) and then you unplug the laptop, the Master tempo will come from the Moog so things could change, but yes, you can definitely make a patch and save it and tyou no need the laptop to do that, you can simply use the master tenpo from the Moog itself.

    Hey FSS. Thanks for the great tutorial. Can I ask how you sync the tempo of the Sub37 using Ableton as an external midi clock (i.e. Sub37 in slave mode & Ableton as master). It should be possible to add an audio track to Ableton & record a mono audio channel while the S37 is tempo locked to the track's bpm. This would be somewhat different to the configuration you've described in this tutorial. This would be especially useful since I have a lot of existing Ableton projects that I want to add S37 live audio (as opposed to using midi to add S37 input). The S37 manual doesn't say much about syncing the synth to external midi. Any tips...?

      Ok open ableton and go to menu options and then to preferences and choose link midi tab. I dont know what midi interface you have or if your using sub 37 usb but select sync for the sub 37 and turn it on. itll go yellow to indicate selection. then press sync button in arpeggiator section of the sub 37 then it will sync to the Sub 37. any problems just ask. Any midi track can then be set to the sub 37 in ableton and match the midi channel to that of the sub 37. Look at creating an external instrument in ableton so you only need to setup once.

      it depends what you want to do, if you want to play and record the midi notes you played in your DAW like Ableton then yes, if you only want to send midi notes to the Moog from your DAW then you only need one.

      Or you can just use a USB cable.

    what do your inputs and outputs look like in ableton settings? this is so frustraing i keep hearing notes but they are getting cut off i believe. I feel like i am unkowingly screwing everything up when i try to fix it. I do not understand channels at all but i set everything up just like you did in the video. Argh!

      Im from EST time zone east coast USA> TBH i dont know how to send a message on youtube. My goal is to record audio from my sub 37 as well as send midi to it so it can play my created notes with its amazing sound. From there i would love to record what comes out. I routed everything and have the sub 37 set up as a midi instrument but i dont feel as if i have the entire process down. Thank you so much for this video and your continued help.

      I used the external instrument look in ableton on the left side panel and drag the external instrument onto your midi track, then put the settings in ie the midi channel and the audio settings I assume youve an external sound device? which are you using?

    Is the moog just connected with usb directly to the laptop or does it require a audio interface?

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It needs an audio interface.

      For Synth's Sake are these sounds digital or analog since it is a plug in?

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sub 37 is analogue signal path so what you hear is analogue. The plugin merely allows control of the digital features (the control) of the sub 37 parameters.

      For Synth's Sake Great, I was looking for a synth with a built in audio interface so I can directly attach it to the laptop. But I noticed the sub 37 has a plug in feature and wondered it wasn't digital audio. Wonder though why they just didn't made it audio over usb. Would have been easier than building a plug in.

    How do you load the editor into Ableton after the installation on the computer? Ableton does not see it!

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to put the editor plugin into your plug in folder. itll be a 32bit or 64 depending on your system The plug in is called sub 37 editor. then go to ableton choose options on menu then preferences. Choose the file folder tab and at the bottom is a plug in sources section click rescan and the plugin will be recognised. then go to the categories plug in section top left of ableton and you willl just above that see the search field type sub 37 and you should see the plug in under the name section. Just drag that onto your midi track. any problems just let me know.

      It only shows up as a VST for WIndows and not Mac OS X when I unzip the files. Is this only available for Windows?

    • @GuitarsAndSynths
      @GuitarsAndSynths 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It only shows VST as dll file for WIndows and nothing for Mac OS.

    • @ForSynthsSake
      @ForSynthsSake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      my sub 37 folder contains a folder for the mac so it does exist, look in your folders for the sub 37 editor folder in there it has the osx version, i guess if you install that itll unzip the plug in. If I recall correctly insstall the standalone version into osx first then see if that unzips the plug ins.

    You are doing it wrong, you don't need to do the mapping. The problem is that you are using the USB port for external instrument and the Plugin can't use it.

    • @voliteon
      @voliteon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is completely untrue. USB is capable of carrying midi.

    • @rodzeroher
      @rodzeroher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are not understanding the problem. The plugin can communicate with the Sub37 directly, no need for mapping, using the USB MIDI of the SUb37. But the plugin can't use the USB MIDI if you are using it for sending data from the DAW. You need USB MIDI for the plugin and the normal MIDI port for the DAW. For the plugin to work perfectly it needs "exclusivity" to put it in some way,.

    • @voliteon
      @voliteon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rodzeroher that may be the way you have yours configured but I don't believe that's necessary. Usb has *30* times more bandwidth than midi cables. Usb can send midi in + out + 3 clear channels of stereo audio on a virus TI. Point being Usb is capable of carrying 30 midi in/outs of it needed to. 1in + 1out should not be a problem. It shouldn't need exclusivity.

    • @voliteon
      @voliteon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to add the plugin and just set the midi input and output to be the Moog sub 37 (Usb cable only) and it seems to work fine. No mapping required.

    • @rodzeroher
      @rodzeroher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      EoN604 then you are still not understanding. Even if USB has more bandwidth it just has one midi port.
