Thank you for this review. I've been debating between a few and decided to settle on Shotcut. I'm a total beginner and only need to make simple edits but it sounds like Shotcut can give me the depth I need if I feel like exploring more options but still retains an entry-level feel to it.
Sure thing glad review helped you! Shotcut is a great video editor and if you spend more time learning it, you can go from beginner to pro level editing (although I'm still a forever noob myself lolz).
There's inherent advantages that free and open source video editors have over proprietary software like Davinci Resolve. First, on the "free" version of Resolve you can't export higher resolutions than UHD 4K (3840x2160). So no DCI 4K (4096x2160). Second, free and open source can pretty much accept any file container and codec unlike Resolve because even in the paid version of Resolve it will not accept any files that are in mkv and avi containers. Third, on the Linux free version of Resolve it has the additional limitation of not excepting files encoded in H.264.
The main advantage of Shotcut is that you don't need a powerful PC for it. It takes less than 400 MB of RAM when I load a 15-minute video in it. When Da Vinci takes more than 4 GB of RAM with the same video! So you basically can't use Da Vinchi on an 8 GB PC. I just found out about Shotcut, and I am loving it. I switched to it from Magix Movie Maker. Just 30 minutes of TH-cam videos and I got used to Shotcut editing flow.
Shotcut is a fantastic video editor especially for quick projects and that's true for Davinci definitely more resource heavy but it does have many benefits for those needing the extra features.
Good review. I use shotcut .... Highly recommended for any level. There are many excellent tutorials on TH-cam , especially yours. Very intuitive after a little practice and when you really dig in deep, you find out how seriously advanced it really is.
I highly recommend Shotcut for beginners is basic. Myself I used iMovie but it had limitations then Shotcut for some time. But now I edit with davinci resolve 16. Davinci resolve is of course harder to learn. But it has so much tools. And I edit more like more color grading sound effects etc...
Absolutely agree, I tried all and went from Shotcut at first to Davinci Resolve, I think those two are the stepping stones to get a solid and smooth learning on this subject.
LOL, I always seem to use Openshot :) - I will have a go with Shotcut, the interface and features seem a cross between Kdenlive and Openshot. Very useful
I think from simple to expert level or I think more than intermediate and nearly expert level editing of video my pick are ShotCut for Desktop PCs and CapCut for SmartPhones And for music production LMMS + Audacity on Desktop PCs
I used Shotcut but I hated how the clips became "INVALID" and I had to redo my work. I want something more reliable! I'm willing to pay for that reliability, thinking of either DaVinci Resolve or CyberLink PowerDirector.
same. everything would work fine and then when i would open my clips again the next day the clips would be invalid. They never fixed this issue and whenever i go on forums all they do is tell people that their machines are the problem not the software.
Thank You! Right now I am going to try Openshot and Shotcut and later Davinchi for my PC! Actually tried Icecream video editor but looking for something better with a lot of options but light for the system of my laptop
Comparing Shotcut, Openshoot, Kdenlive with Davinci is like comparing a motorbike with a jet plane. Better compare with Olive - which kicks ass by the way ;-)
These are the Video Editors that I use personally and they're better suited for different people and each has their own pros/cons so I decided to make this comparison for those interested. I've tried Olive in the past and it does remind me a lot of Cinellera and Shotcut.
Hi thanks for this vídeo. Actualy i use Kdenlive, i'm test davinci resolve, its great, but has very hight resources comsuming 😢 for examples not its good for a casual edition on a normal notebook.
I made a video below on how to create Tutorial videos using Kdenlive however these principles are also similar across other video editors: th-cam.com/video/PhFJk1ioSB0/w-d-xo.html
I’d say I’m just getting to that intermediate level and i am ready to upgrade my software. Ive mainly been using windows movie maker and have quickly learned openshot. I would stick to openshot but i find it to be buggy and lacks certain features that are important to me (a main one; being able to see the frames of my video to make cutting easier). I’m not sure if i should use davinci next bc it’s definitely more on the advanced level and is a big software (which I’m not sure how well it’ll do on my laptop). I do want to go pro editing but at the same time I’m not sure if i should try a simpler software like shotcut first or go straight to davinci to avoid constant switching software...
There's so many great video editing options nowadays and all of these video editing software I use are free 😁 Even Davinci Resolve's free version allows me to do everything I need and more.
just install davinci and see if it runs. it doesnt work on all computers, so if it doesnt work u wont have to worry about taking it into consideration and so your options will be narrower :D
I'm very proficient in Shotcut but have been advised to check into Resolve for system performance reasons. Would my Shotcut experience carry over or would I be having to learn a completely unfamiliar editor from scratch? My main concern is the time investment needed in learning Resolve while keeping my content flowing.
Resolve is really on another level but if you're already proficient in Shortcut, then I think you'll be able to adapt although the learning curve is still high but long term benefits might be worth it.
Edited 4k60 video made on DJI drone both on Shotcut and Resolve (similar output settings, only color grading). The result out of Shotcut was awful, all the smoothness of 60fps was gone, while Resolve managed to keep it intact. Couldn't find any explanation or similar reports on the internet. Any thoughts?
hello I am French I am a beginner. I downloaded videopad. What do you think? I tried using davinci but it doesn't open folders. Would Shotcut be the easiest while having the most options?
For the noise reduction thing. For footage to stock footage like Shutter stock. I know Davinci is best in these options. What about Shotcut , Openshot and Kdenlive? What do you think?
sir i have a low end pc with 32 bit,4 gb ram and no graphics card and i am a beginner . i have openshot in my pc but when i add video in it, it is so laggy. which is suitable for my pc. 1)shortcut,2)kdenlive and 3)olive
I'd give all those others a try since they're free and at least for Shotcut, Kdenlive, you have the option to use Proxy clips. You can check out my Shotcut, Kdenlive playlists for more info or see links below. And if all those don't work, then upgrade hardware when you can - I don't have specific recommendations but I'd say any new laptop/PC will have better specs. Shotcut Proxy th-cam.com/video/Y9vsHNs4rf0/w-d-xo.html Kdenlive Proxy th-cam.com/video/gWvZoDiWsI0/w-d-xo.html
Unfortunately the free version of Davinci doesn't support H.264 & H.265 on Linux which renders it unusable for most users on this platform. I won't waste any more time or disk space converting formats to open on Davinci. Since Kdenlive corrupted my saved project after hours of work, I guess I'll try now shotcut and hope the bugs just make it crash but not result in the inadvertent corruption of the project. Thanks for the reviews in this and other related videos.
I got to learn davinci resolve. I've used premiere and camtasia. ACDSee is very similar to camtasia. I'm thinking it's the same company that created camtasia might be the same one for acdsee. Both have very similar UI. I'll try shotcut. Premiere is nice, but since I don't use it often, I keep forgetting its features.
Thank you i didn't know about Kdenlive i'm using shotcut but want to improve the quality of my videos, actually want to switch to davinci resolve but i wonder if i can use it on a 4gb ram system You even added links to tutorials Thanks a lot
DaVinci Resolve takes an i7 processor apparently, so I seriously doubt it would work with 4gb ram. Could you say something about how shotcut is too low quality tho? I was gonna go with that since Geek made it sound like none of them make the sky the limit anyways, aside from maybe DaVinci, but I too have a very mid-end computer. Hope to hear back about how shotcut isnt enough for ya.
Thank you. I have been using DaVinci Resolve 17 (the free version) and it has more features than I will ever use. It is a great program but my laptop only meets the minimum requirements to run it, so it doesn't perform as good as it could. Also Resolve is continually upgrading and soon my laptop won't be able to handle it at all. I will probably try Shotcut for my simple needs.
Sure thing I absolutely love Davinci Resole and I do agree that it has more features then I'll ever use but glad they're available when I'm ready to use them.
It really depends on the type of Gaming Videos you're making and if you're just starting out, I'd give Shotcut or Kdenlive a try as they do provide you with a lot of features that will help in making Gaming vids more Fun (i.e filters/effects) versus Openshot.

Nah, I tried shotcut, and it's confusing as hell. I imported 2 clips. When I dragged one clip into the timeline, it doesn't go. The only way to make it go is to drag clip from monitor window down into the timeline. Camtasia is so much easier.
Just a question about how they differ regarding resources? Which is least and most sluggish on ordinary laptops as opposed to ones with high performance capabilities. This might have a bearing to new comers who have already got medium performance computers and can't afford to upgrade.
I'd say for most projects, Shotcut and Kdenlive work great on lower end machines. Davinci Resolve does require more but it also has more advanced proxy clips, render cache for improved performance. And Openshot isn't currently the best optimized so you might encounter more performance issues there.

If i have a dog in the background of the video and I want to remove it.That's what i need in my case. Do all of them have this option?
