I wouldn't recommend Filmora anymore, they decided to charge users with lifetime licenses for the latest release. Back with version 7, I purchased a lifetime license. Just recently I realized I had to pay again to use version 12. They snuck new terms into version 9 and made different definitions for free lifetime "updates" and "upgrades. I will never do business with them again unless they make things right with their customers.

It'd be cool to have a tutorial on Blender's Grease Pencil that you can then complement with its video editor. The idea behind the series could be the creation of ads for social networks (like animated posts or stories for Instagram for instance) or the web. I've looked for this kind of tutorial for so long and it's surprising no one is tackling this. 99% of them is all 3D oriented or animated-illustration oriented.

I've learned Olive by your tutorials in 2020 and use it since. Now that 0.2 is much more usable, I try to switch to it but have some growing pains still.
I've made one video using a combination of Shotcut and Openshot because Shotcut alone is unusable (can't persuade it to stop fitting images to the screen and there is a lot of this "I know what users need!" behaviour). Openshot is much, much better but it doesn't realize that not all text is cinematic titles.
Kdenlive still terrifies me every time I open it, so, so many things on the screen at the same time.

I like Flowblade and Olive, but didn't include them since Olive still needs a lot of development, and Flowblade is Linux only. I actually chose these 10 programs based how often they were mentioned in comments of my previous TH-cam videos. People were like, 'what about Filmora??' so I included them to show how they compared. I have explored Cinelerra, Pitivi, and Lives, but have not been impressed with them.

Great review, but I don't know where you got that Davinci Resolve watermarks the videos in the free version. Yes, they do Watermark certain premium effects and transitions (which you'll clearly be alerted about in the editor before you render), but they do not watermark the final video if you steer clear from those premium features. So just to be fair, I want to clear that up, not sure how you got that twisted.

I have used the free version of DaVinci resolve for the last two years. Some of the advanced features don't work on the free version but it is still amazingly versatile, powerful and intuitive. It does NOT (and I repeat NOT) watermark rendered files. It does need a fairly powerful computer especially if you are using the Fusion module for motion graphics. My system has a Ryzen 7 CPU, 30 GB of RAM and a 4GB graphics card. Ideally the graphics card should be larger.

@@Tech_with_Loco For basic editing I find DaVinci really simple and intuitive. I much prefer the edit page and avoid the cut page. My colour grading and sound design are fairly basic so it doesn't raise any issues for me. Well, I'm a resolve type of guy. I've tried the top two and a few others. But, from what I could remember kdenlive wasn't as stable and shotcut wasn't as feature packed. Maybe worth a revisit though as resolve is getting to use more CPU being free, where paid will use more GPU.

  • @strayferal
    @strayferal ปีที่แล้ว

Kudos! You did a great job comparing all these. But can you please make a short video describing in your experience the best multiplatform (and preferably GPL license) programs for making titles. I liked how your Shotcut titles look. Good looking animated titles are extremely important. As for me, just few days ago I switched to Kdenlive. Took me max 4 days to learn it. You did great tutorials, great presentation skills. The reason kdenlive have no presets shocks at first, but now I know why - the program is soo simple and intuitive, that it need no presets. I personally (I am the average TH-camr) started with Windows Movie Maker in 2008 and used it for 2 years. In around 2011 switched to Magix Movie Edit Pro (commercial product, but back then I disliked the free products and it was better than Windows Movie Maker). Used it for almost 11 years (upgraded 2-3 times). Not perfect but did what I needed. Around 2018-2019 learned Davinci Resolve, but it was too heavy and complicated (and Blender looks so too), so I stayed on Movie Edit Pro. By accident learned about kdenlive and it works lightning fast, compared to what I have experience with, so I am switching to it. Only thing which I really need are good animated titles. Movie Edit Pro have some animated half-vector half-raster graphic presets, which so far do what I need, but I want to ditch it completely. So, I need something not much complicated than kdenlive for vector animated titles. And I wonder what software do they use to make these lyrics music videos where lyric words line up on the page coming from all directions, sorta like playing Tetris. But in my personal opinion, kdenlive suits what most TH-camrs and home video enthusiasts need. Most people get pirate copies of Adobe Premiere, but why, when you have a free and much lighter product, which also is multiplatform...

I've been using the free ver. of LightWorks on and off again for 5 years, and constantly for nearly 2 years. I recommend it for newbies that want to mess around with making videos; for it's ease of use.
I've been able to push lightworks pretty far by using it and GIMP to get around the limits of the free ver.
The keying features is pretty good. And I've used it for making pseudo animations.
But I have been moving to using DaVinci Resolve now for it more robust features.
There was a learning curve for me going from one to another. But I'm looking for what I'l be able to do with it.
    [Micro]
When making the pseudo animations for my project. I have to have make them in a separate project. Then export it, so I can add them to my main project. Because it keeps lightworks to run smoother. I do have to fight lightworks sometimes when there is lage amount of keying being done. Some of it was my inexperience, but now a lot of it is lightworks crapping out on me. (I don't have any of them uploaded yet. So I can't show what can be done with the higher end keying in lightworks)
    [Tech]
I have used a laptop to edit.
It took me longer to start trying DaVinci Resolve because my old laptop could not run it. I would start the program and my computer would shut off. When my laptop died at the end of last year. I bought a higher end laptop. And DaVinci Resolve has no problem running now.

I found Kdenlive very buggy (both my Linux distro's version and the more recent binary from the website). The worst bug for me is the smooth animated keyframes reverting to linear after save-close-reload. The other very annoying one is the rotoscoping mask often being displayed in the wrong place when zoomed in. It's also unusably slow when I have four or more layers, like e.g. when I want to create a simple animation from a handful of modest size images on top of the video or even just on a plain colour background (png images with transparency). I don't understand why people like this video editor so much. Maybe there is something wrong with my setup but I tried it on two very different systems and the same problems arise on both.

something's clearly wrong with your machine if VSDC output is as you said in the video: glitchy, blinky etc. I'm using it on low-mid range laptop with 8GB RAM and onboard video...works fine no glitch no blinky blinky.
As for the user interface, yeah it's a bit cluttered compared to others but the layout is fully customizable. I actually prefer the original classic layout coz it resembles the layout in Godot, Unity and Roblox Studio (those are game engines).
If you gonna make update video on this one, please redo the VSDC test coz the glitchy blinky you experienced are not normal.
Tips: VSDC often does giveaways on the Pro version which means full GPU support along with other premium features.

@@StephenSE9 No, you don't necessarily have to upload do vimeo, neither download from it. You just have to link to a vimeo account and the option to export to 1080p just becomes available. It will in fact try to upload to vimeo automatically right after rendering, but you can just kill the process while it is uploading and the video file will be in your default rendering directory. You could also temporarily turn off network to prevent a the upload.

I found blender the most serious software between them. Davinci resolve is very professional and intuitive, but it is very bad in importing most video formats. Kdenlive is feature-full but it is very clunky and not very stable.

  • @LMDProductionsOfficial

I started tinkering with Shotcut and Openshot in 2019. Openshot was such a steaming pile of crap that I abandoned it. Shotcut was also extremely buggy but I stuck with it and they've vastly improved it over time, though it can still be temperamentally buggy some days. On the whole it does the job, and is friendly enough that I can't be bothered to go learn something else. Do wish it had more animations/transitions/text functionality. A lot of my feature desires are in their published road map, so I know it's on the way.
My beef with Resolve is that they don't remove the limited features from the free version. Restrict some features, sure, but leaving the buttons there so I have to constantly tip-toe around what is usable and what will throw dialogues at me is too annoying to be productive. I gave up on it.
I installed Kdenlive a few weeks ago but haven't bothered to learn it. It looks similar to Shotcut to some extent though so maybe one day I'll sit down and figure it out. Until then, Shotcut it is. Excellent video.

watermark on the exports is a deal breaker to me. This is why I consider videopad much better, because it doesn't have that problem. Just kidding I'll stick to kdenlive until there is a competitive opensource alternative.

This hasn't been my experience, and I feel like I have tested it on a variety of machines over many years. I will say I have never tried Kdenlive on Mac, and also not very much on Windows... It could be that certain work flows are more prone to triggering crashes. I have also helped a lot of people to get started using Kdenlive, and it has always seemed stable to me.

@@TJFREE Maybe it depends on hardware? Because The Linux Experiment complained about kdenlive stability, DistroTube made a whole video why he hate kdenlive for glitches a bugs, TechHut made a video why he switched to davinci from kdenlive
So this is not an individual case, this a systematic problem. And these guys definitely used Linux as their system

    • @TJFREE
      @TJFREE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It could be hardware, or I also think certain workflows could be to blame. I think the negative thoughts about Kdenlive by the TH-camrs you mentioned have changed by now. They all seem to be currently using, recommending, speaking highly of Kdenlive.

    • @EugeniaLoli

@@TJFREE You are trying to promote the free apps, but the truth is that kdenlive, and ALL other apps seen here, are unstable. Heck even Resolve is a bit unstable. Video editing is not easy to program, it's among the most difficult of all kinds of apps because there are too many moving parts. Part of the reason why all these open source apps are unstable is because they rely on ffmpeg or mlt framework and many other third party libraries. Too many bugs on these libs are making the editors buggy as well.
But overall, Resolve runs circles around any of the suggested apps, and it's more stable because it has implemented and tested everything in house. And the watermark is not a watermark, it's simply a reminder that some features are Studio only. You are not supposed to use these features unless you upgrade your app to Studio. They are there only for preview reasons, to quickly see what they do, to make you decide to buy Studio or not. But the Free version is more than capable on its own. Certainly more than Kdenlive.
