I was especially impressed that you explained the reason cases often get longer after running through the die but before final adjustment is made. I've been using a hodgepodge of dies on my .308 bolt guns but I think I'm going to convert everything to Whidden dies. Thank you.

Although I use the feel method, this video was the best of many I watched when I first started reloading. Besides it is still wise to measure with the guages. Mr. Whidden's videos are always short and to the point. In this one he clearly explains die adjustment and how to achieve good head space and measurements. I only reload for my 325wsm rifles. When I go to my other calibers I will be getting custom Whidden dies. I also like that they provide the guages . Whidden Gunworks rocks! Some one at my gun range in Pennsylvania and another person at my Florida gun range said I should order Whidden dies.
I am absolutely ecstatic with my Whidden reloading equipment. So precise and so easy to read that micrometer for bullet seating. And your guys customer care and technical support is unrivaled. I would strain to find any complaint other than they're not free 😁. Keep on cranking out precision reloading dies! And to John: I have enjoyed watching you stomp the competition in the shooting sports. You are a great credit to it!

Excellent analogies "Squeezing a half-full tube of toothpaste so longer headspace and need to thread die down. "Average sheet of paper 0.003" thick" I use an expander mandrel so I remove the decapper/expander stem from my resizing dies. 21st Century has expander mandrels in in .0005” increments. Instead of a comparator, a more precise measurement is possible with the LE Wilson Micrometer/case gauge. I use a Lee Universal Decapper die to pop out the primers as my first step before reszing.
I noticed that when you bumped the shoulders of the first two cartridges they came out to negative three-thousands and the third one you bumped came out to a bit less than that. Is it possible that the reason for this could be the build up of case lube on the inside of the sizing die? If so, what can be done about this in order to get more consistency? I realize that the differences in measurements were miniscule but if a build up of case lube or some other foreign matter was the cause of it, each time you size another case might just add to the problem.

Excellent... saved to my “go to” reference file. Question... with this FL sizing die you did not have an “expander ball” on the stem. If there was, would there be a potential to further compress the shoulder to offset the positive extension created by the pulling the expansion ball back through? Thanks for the education 👍
He used a Full-length sizer without a bushing. If you notice on his upstroke, there's resistance in the top 1/3 of the stroke.. that's the expander ball running through the neck. On a bushing die, you don't need the expander, because you are only sizing the neck portion barely enough to get a good tension on your bullet. Unless you order a very custom FL sizer to exact chamber specs and with a particular neck diameter ( if you're turning your necks to a particular thickness, for example.. but that's only usually for world-class Benchrest/ F-class precision competition. ) That would be a VERY expensive die.

I presume this video is for rimless cartridges- not rimmed cart. or magnum (belted) cart- because headspace is determined by the shoulder position- right?
I am new to reloading. I received from my friend once fired brass identical to what I use. I measured the headspace and it was -.002” to -0.003”. Since the rounds will chamber do I have todo any resizing? Thanks
Howard while your understanding of headspace is correct I still recommend sizing the brass in your die. The reason is the brass may have been fired in a chamber that's larger in diameter than yours. This could be either at the shoulder or base of the brass. Also be aware that sometimes interchanging brass between chambers can lead to sticky extraction. If the diameter at the base of the original chamber is larger than your chamber this is likely to happen. Even though we are sizing the base down, right at the base of the case the brass is very thick and hard for any die to size down. Hopefully your friend's brass will work smoothly for you and none of these problems crop up, but I wanted to share this info with you and the other viewers.
@@howardschwartz1462 If the headspace on your die is already set for your rifle (you have set is previously with brass fired in your rifle) then just use that same die setting. If you do not already have the die set, then first adjust the die so that it sets the shoulder back to say -.005". Then carefully adjust the die from there to see -.003". You will know you're in the right place this way.
Did I miss it? I was looking forward to a discussion of the bushing sizer die....but the video just seemed to go straight from setting the die...to the shoulder bump information...

Your explanations were good though rather brief. I would have liked to have been able to see the gauges both before and after each sizing.
Is it any different for a belted cartridge (I.e. 7mm Rem Magnum) which headspace off the belt rather than the shoulder?

How do you know that gauge is exactly the same as the chamber of your rifle?? Where can I get one of those gauges??

I have lots of problems with my AR-15 because my reloaded brass wont fit in the chamber even if its my O.A.L. is in place.
