  • JANUS: A Lantean scientist who lived some 10,000 years ago in the city of Atlantis. Janus was a curious and creative scientist, who proved himself to be one of the most brilliant and prolific minds among the ancient civilization that spanned many galaxies.
Janus is the inventor of a time drive, a unique component that allows a Puddle Jumper to travel through time. And when Elizabeth Weir used the drive to travel to the city from the future, it was Janus who helped her to survive and to preserve the legacy of the Ancient city ...

yeah, amazon just made the purchase of all MGM content and stargate is one of the first shows that amazon has their plans on within the next year.
but not all is good, they apparently did some shady shit when the deal went down, so it will still come out, but the show probably won't be what the fans want.
for a while there i was hopeful that we would get the show to continue with the writers we like, but it looks like they will be picking some nobody to make the show, so stargate will come back, but i have no confidence within Amazon's capability because they are shady and took advantage of brad wright and lead all us fans on to believe that he would be involved, which means they lied and the project is now doomed.
i was afraid something like this was going to happen, and ppl kept telling me that it will be just fine, but we just got this news and it's starting to sound like it won't be a good deal.
for me personally, i'm a bit more picky with who i like writing the show and the freedom that we had there, but it sounds like that won't happen and Amazon will probably destroy it just like everything else they touch.

I love this character I would've like for it to be explored further. I don't believe that Janus ascended. Obviously belonging to the generation of Ancients that managed to evolve he would've known about it and maybe even be able to do it but I don't think he would be able to follow those rules. He is to similar in that regard to Daniel Jackson, defying. He wouldn't make a good ascended being. Also I think he would get bored having all knowledge on a silver platter. He likes the thrill of discovery too much in my opinion.

For the record, the ascended were not "all knowing". If they were, Anubis would have never been able to fool Oma.
And the Ori would have known about the ascended in the milky way galaxy if that was the case.
In fact, I even remember Daniel Jackson distinctly telling Jack that being ascended does not make him all knowing (when Jack was being tortured by Baal)
So it's not like ascending would have given Janus cosmic knowledge. It just would have allowed him to live forever. Mind you I absolutely agree he wouldn't want to stay ascended if it meant he couldn't interfere with non-ascended people anymore. His whole shtick was making things that he thought helped people. He wouldn't be allowed to keep doing that if he was ascended.

If stargate ever comes back, I want to see him again and older man as he currently is or will be at the time, as in Janus who has been placing countless technological artifacts spread around the galaxy or multiple galaxies in both present, past, and future, and even distant future such as centuries or thousands of years of the current present timeline on earth planet.. As in him being a watcher of the timeline and knows all the difficulties humanity will have in the future and him being the watcher/priest/ancient that helps humanity ascent onto the right path and even allowing humanity to have breakthroughs in technology to fight any known enemy and even reach the true goal that the ancients had in finding the end of the universe, the life that existed before creation as a continuation of SGUniverse..

  • @joemck74
    @joemck74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I feel Janus had such a strong connection to the plight of the 'ordinary folks' in whatever place or time he found himself in, it would be very hard for him to 'give up his burden' and ascend. For somebody who has the skills and knowledge to help people wherever they happen to find themselves, it would be difficult to find the required 'selfishness' to leave the corporeal universe behind.
As we seen, Oma Desala found it impossible to remain aloof from the sufferings of the unascended, and used her power to help them, and was punished for it.
The Prime Directive/non-interference policy of the Ascended was almost their undoing, and only the bumbling efforts of a bunch of bald apes (SG-1) prevented their complete erasure from existence.
The 'Just Don't Care Anymore' policy of the ascended Lanteans was particularly silly considering their ancestors had found a 'message from the creator' embedded in the structure of the universe, and spent generations building and launching the Destiny and it's sisters to decode that message.

Here's the line, when Daniel and Rodney are in the alien lab in "First Contact": "The catch is that Janus ran a three-day test about ten thousand years ago and then shut the whole project down because of unforeseen side effects."
It sounds like it took that long for Janus to realize that gates were exploding, and that his experiment was the likely cause, and then to shut down the project. (Either that or his initial experiment might have taken some time for the feedback to build up in a Stargate, in which case gates might theoretically have still been usable for the first day or two.)

Not specifically, I'd say at guess they were different lateans, his machine worked perfectly before they returned to earth, the window of opportunity machine was made after. But they were different types of time machine, one physically moved through time, the other looped it but let them retain their memories, although you could make an argument, that seeing as it targeted the surrounding stargates maybe they were trying to isolate their part of the galaxy or were they trying to use the stargate to dial a planet at a specific time? While they either had his jumper plans which would mean they had a viable time travel option or they didnt and tried to make their own, what ever way it was, it didnt work and they gave up. I think the fact its solar powered and had such a large reach meant it was large scale, so the council would know about it and they didnt like to like to treat causality lightly, maybe thats why it looped and did not actually change the past. You could make as many argument for as against.

@@t3h51d3w1nd3r The table time device from windows of opportunity was much older than Janus' puddle time jumpers actually. They built that one to try and thwart the plague that eventually lead them to leave the milky way galaxy for pegasus, million of years before they ever abandonned atlantis. They tried and never managed to make it work quite right, and you can bet the council from back then was probably not giving them everything they needed to make it work. Chances are high as the Ancients were fan of archiving their discoveries. That Janus probably used the data from WoO's planet attempt as a base when he started working on his own device. Though it's never stated, so it could be working entirely differently too.

The device from Window of Opportunity predates Janus by **millions** of years. That device was build by ancients as a last ditch effort to try and find a cure for the plague that wrecked havoc in the Milky Way. I suppose that's possible, but he would have to create the Android long before they built Atlantis as well as travel to the Pegasus Galaxy.
But it makes sense for them to have some form of automation given their technological progress.
They did after all create the seed ships as well as the destiny that we're all fully automated and several robots that did repair work on the ship, I would believe originally those were also automated and I would also believe that there were far more of these robots on the Destiny ship when it was first launched, but over the millions of years the robots were either attacked or destroyed or could no longer maintain the ship because they ended up in fewer numbers, which the ship tried to compensate given its issues which is why I relied on its Shields more than its weaponry when it was being fired on and sealed off certain sections of the ship in order to preserve the areas that mostly needed to be in good repair.

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you, and I certainly wouldn't hold my breathe! None of that sounds like anything Brad Wright would develop....
And whether or not you're a fan of SGU, it certainly wasn't anything like what you're looking forward to even though the underlying circumstances of the story created a series that marked a distinctly different tone than what many people claim the TV franchise had established.
However, in reality both SG1 & SGA contained a number of episodes & story arcs, as well as characters, that were much more within the same vein in their dark, bleak, hopeless tone than some people care to acknowledge.
Furthermore, it needs to be kept in mind that if the art & entertainment of a society are to be relevant, they must reflect in some way the state of that society.
I can't imagine anyone asserting that the world & society we live in today is not drastically and fundamentally different from those which inspired the creation of SG1 & SGA. Smart mobile devices and the social media platforms and apps they host have become ubiquitous, and they have been hijacked to collect virtually unimaginable amounts of personal data & metadata on each of us which had been used to develop algorithms designed to exploit our biological & psychological weakness to hijack our emotions & attention creating a strong addictive hold on us.
So-called "fact checkers" with complete authority have emerged to sanitize their platforms of any voices of dissent from key narratives regardless of what the real facts & truth might be. The minority of the internet which is used by the public had been deemed private and therefore not subject to our guarantees for freedom of speech.
We are in the process of attempting to transition out of a global pandemic which has transformed our world & attitudes in profound ways which we have yet to grasp. The actual facts & data about this pandemic: its origin, its characteristics, how to protect ourselves from it, how to treat it & minimize its virulence, and the safety & efficacy of the rapidly created "vaccines" which have mandated on many... All of this information has undergone many drastic changes which have been forced by an information leak too large to plug up which reveals that the current narrative to be directly contradictory to reality. And this cycle has repeated a number of times.
And most recently we find ourselves, and in fact our entire species, under the greatest, genuine, potential threat of nuclear annihilation than we have ever seen! And this has been precipitated by the provocation from a superpower which has been increasingly shut out, threatened & demonized by an ever growing coalition of nations at its borders and beyond, a number of which it once controlled and still perceives as part of its rightful territory.
And those are just a small handful of the most important changes & events of the last 1.5 decades.
The world we live in is indisputably an almost unrecognizably different one from the world that spawned SG1 & SGA!
But I am also looking forward to the rebirth of the Stargate franchise as a live action series with great excitement & anticipation!
And I have no doubt that whatever Brad Wright brings forth will be entertaining, satisfying, relevant, innovative, creative, as well as reflective of the fact that the story is basically set in our world of today, as he always has!
The Stargate franchise has always been unique in the sci-fi genre because of how elegantly it facilitates the telling of stories of science fiction without having to leave the world we live in today whether going to a far off future, planet or galaxy; and because it incorporates & references so many events, mythologies & cultures from the rich history of earth.
And although the franchise has been essentially sleeping for more than a decade, there are 17 seasons plus 4 movies of world building history & mythology already established which a large fan base is familiar with & loves.
There is immense potential to create something new which will be attractive & accessible to the vast number of potential viewers and new fans from around the world who don't yet know of the stargate, while also incorporating & continuing elements of from the existing canon which will likely spark interest for new comers to explore the adventurous stories in the archives.
Brad Wright is a well established, respected and highly creative & talented producer and creator with enormous experience and success. There is no one more qualified, knowledgeable or capable of taking this franchise into the future with Amazon! And there is certainly no one else I would trust to do so.

Aside from the fact that many human civilizations in Pegasus seem to depend upon gate travel for trade, there's no indication anywhere in canon that the Ancients had the ability to turn off the entire network remotely. It's a distributed system with no central hub or CPU, so two Stargates sitting out there in the galaxy will always be able to connect to one another.

The wormhole it creates almost acts like a transporter but moreso does some level of compression. On Atlantis we saw the Doctor turn a Wraith into a human, so changing out the Gates' protocol to see Wraith DNA as a dangerous, I wonder if it would've been possible to strip it out in transit, or if not, just dump all of the bodies into a gate that's parked by a black hole (so they could never escape back out). Problem solved either way.
Even if they didn't go that route, they could've gone the full blown bio-weap route like Michael did for revenge. Given how crazy smart Janus was, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't come up with a variant of the Asurans originally. They never went into any details on how the Ancients developed or used A.I., but a civilization that's millions of years old would HAVE to pursuit it at some point. It would surely be something that they would've tried to create to supplement their battle numbers against the Wraith.

If I'm following you (and remembering the episode rightly), I think you're essentially describing why the Attero project was shut down. Destabilizing the entire Stargate network was an unforeseen consequence of the technology that Janus never overcame. Fan Theory, I believe just like Merlin, both of them were first ascended, and then later on during the Ascension period Of their life, they eventually came to the conclusion that they needed to descend themselves back to human form in order to continue their work in Secret, I would think that With Merlin, he was more vocal about his decision which is why the others sent Morgan Le Fay to stop him, it's almost like Ascension is a form of a Windows update where you have zero privacy from Windows, because there's always somebody watching your back among the others.
Clearly they didn't trust him, and in-kind neither did he trust them which is why he was trying to work in secret in the first place and it's also why he had that teleportation technology that would use the gate to transport himself and his laboratory to several other planets in which I can only assume work set to Auto dial given a certain time threshold, so that he could remain to do his work in secret.
But he didn't know how persistent Morgan was going to be in watching him, because eventually she caught up with him and I can only assume they had a conversation where he explained to her that his work needed to be done and changed her mind which is why she held it as a secret for all of these years.
Going back to Janus, I believe he descended himself in more of a secret way so that nobody got suspicious of him and nor of his work.
I still question how he was able to track an entire history of one planet all the way to the point of the modern day and age and also leave his Time Jumper behind, I can only assume he had two of them, or he accidentally created a Time paradox we're one still existed within the main timeline and he's within the same jumper only in a different timeline that he accidentally created.
    That's my theory anyway.

Regarding the Time Jumper (I assume you're talking about that episode with Mayborne in it?) Here's how I think he did it:
First, he jumped through various points in the planet's development. He saw Mayborne being settled there by the Tok'Ra, and he saw the Goa'uld attack and what would have happened if the planet was defenseless.
Then, he went back to the past (pretty much any time before Mayborne arrived). He recorded the important events on the stones for Mayborne to find, so that his predictions would get SG-1's attention. Then he left the Jumper for SG-1 to use. As we've seen, he doesn't mind meddling if it's for a good cause, and stopping the Goa'uld is a pretty good one. After leaving the Jumper, he could have either gone through the gate to somewhere else, or he joined the planet's population and lived out the rest of his mortal life. Or maybe he could have ascended again, I don't know.
It's possible he even explored possible timelines further, looking at events beyond just that planet. He already knew about the Atlantis expedition from meeting Weir, and he knew that they would be in trouble without ZPM's. Maybe he knew there was one in Egypt, and that SG-1would be able to go get it if he left them his time machine. I don't know, just something I thought of while I was typing.

      @user-tp5yb4hr4w 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@John73John
Well I was kind of talking about both Merlin and Janus, I believe they both ascended originally so that they could essentially live through the plague, but at some point within the ascended realm, they began to understand that the others would always stop them if they tried to interfere with the rules, so then they decided to descend themselves back into human form to continue their work.
We don't know who was first, but I can only assume that Merlin might have been the most vocal about his decision when he decided to descend himself, which is why they sent Morgan lafaye after him.
However when it came to Janus, he probably was more subtle and secretive about his plans when he decided to descend himself to continue his work.
This would have also have been right after the ancient platform on Dakara was activated to destroy a life in the galaxy because the plague was essentially killing everyone, and eventually that same device that takes life was used to create life within the Galaxy.
And I believe it was at this point when Janus came back to work on his various projects.
I can only assume he did more than his Time jumper idea, for such a brilliant scientist such as himself to do only one thing seems below him, and you're right it's possible he could have ascended again, but we don't know that for sure otherwise he would have possibly joined oma or perhaps even orlin within their respective journeys.
I get the feeling that the vast majority of the ascended beings hold a lot of clout to the point where the vast majority of them are afraid to go against the grain, which is why they never involve themselves in anything.
We only know of a few of them who have gone against the grain, Oma Merlin Morgan Orlan, there was one that was was in the Pegasus Galaxy, but I can't remember her name.
Anyway, they all seem to have a similar goal when it comes to bending the rules that the vast majority of the ascended beings are against.
The vast majority seem to be more interested in following the rules blindly to the point of their own Extinction which almost happened if it wasn't for the intervention of the ascended beings such as orlin Morgan Merlin and Oma.
Oma also created a type of following in the way that she interprets the rules of the ascended, and we can only assume that they had something to do with holding back the others when sg1 built Merlin's anti-ori device, if I recall correctly, it was vala who thought the moment that the device was put together, that the others would wisp their way in and steal the device away.
But for whatever reason it didn't happen, which makes you wonder what could have been happening within the ascended realm, were they held back by the other group within the ascended being club? Or were the others too afraid to do anything to make any attention on themselves as the Ori and their priors were already within the milky way galaxy.
Unfortunately we can never understand this period In time, because all that mattered was the conflict within the physical plane, so we have no idea what could have possibly been going on during this point in the story within the ascended realm.
It really makes you wonder if they had some kind of stalemate within the ascended realms during this point, we know that the others were afraid of Merlin's device, because it could essentially delete them from existence, but at the same time if it got rid of a bigger threat, such as the Ori, that they had enough faith within the lower planes to save their asses by sending the device through the super gate to the Ori Galaxy to Auto detonate the moment it arrived in their galaxy.

Weir was still very new to the stargate program when she led the Atlantis expedition to the Pegasus galaxy. And while she read an enormous amount of the mission reports. No one is able to accurately retain that quantity of information in long-term memory based on reading it one time at a rushed pace! And it is doubtful that the extent of Carter's relationship with Nareem was recorded in the mission files.
I find it unlikely that Weir related much to Janus that was not directly related to the Atlantis expedition. Her focus was to learn all she could from Janus & the other Lanteans, particularly in regards to Atlantis, not to tell them stories about a future which they did not wish to even have knowledge of in order to preserve the timeline as much as possible. She was specifically forbidden to remain in Atlantis for that purpose and Janus lied to & disobeyed the council in order to allow her to stay.
It was also explicitly against their core ideology & morals to share their knowledge & technology with less evolved species & civilizations. Even Janus was respectful of that although with some exceptions. And while his research was not approved, he kept it hidden and encrypted for good reasons, and he was ultimately doing it for himself because it was his passion and he couldn't abandon it NOT to share it or bring into wide use.
I don't mean to disparage your fascinating idea, I am just explaining the reasons why I feel that it is not something that would have happened within the existing universe that had been established.

What am I basing this off of you asked,?
Well we know that he had his Time Jumper left on that Milky Way planet where mayborn played a king for a bit, Janus had a catalog of events that existed throughout history, somehow he was able to track time specifically on that planet, and he is nowhere to be seen, which means he already lived through that part of the timeline, I'm not entirely certain of how he did it or was able to do it that far in the future to begin with, especially with how cryosleep works, I mean I suppose it's possible he's still out there and we just don't know it, but while we're on the topic of time travel I believe he accidentally created himself a Time paradox one where he's Within in Another Universe, perhaps he ascended within that other universe, or anything else, there are so many theories that surround this man and the show that it boggles the mind of the possibilities.
If he was ascended, you would think at some point he tried to contact anybody or figure out how to prolong his life without Ascension that didn't necessarily require him to be old either via cryosleep.
The man was crafty, in life and within Ascension, I mean it's still possible he ascended, but maybe he moved on from this universe to another somewhere outside of the purview of the others so that he could do his research in secret.
As I said there could be many theories around this guy.
