The History of the Vanir (Stargate SGA)

  • Members of the Vanir are physiologically very similar to the Asgard, as they were descended from the same race. Like their Ida cousins, the Vanir employ cloning as a means of propagating their race. However, the Vanir have two small implants placed on their bodies, one located above the right eye and another on the left chest. It is unknown what purpose these devices serve, although it may be related to their more advanced cloning techniques.
    Like the Asgard of the Ida galaxy, the Vanir suffered the negative effects of generations of cloning and re-cloning themselves and sought means by which to stabilize their genetic structure. However, where the Ida Asgard were unwilling to engage in acts that risked other lives in that endeavor, the Vanir, consumed with the desire to survive, believed that the ends justified the means. Their primary goal was survival, as they did not wish to end up like their distant cousins, which would result in the loss of a hundred thousand years of history. www.amazon.com/shop/omegaorda... fun note, the azgaurd on the show were not props or kids in suits, they were a real alien species that wanted to be part of a human television show and thus were hired to star in the filming of episodes. Pretty neat!

    I would have liked to see more of the Vanir in future seasons of SGA. It deserved to have more. I would have wrote it so that there were Vanir that had grown disillusioned with what they were doing and were working with Atlantis team. We've seen groups of individuals from alien races turn out good before. In SG1 we see the Tok'ra who are an offshoot if the Gaul'd and in the old V we see Visitors that helped the resistance. So we can see good people coming from evil races.

    It would have been cool if the Ida Asgard’s had stored their consciousness in the computers given to the humans so when the Vanir perfected the cloning, there was a way to bring back the Asgard. With the moral questions of whether they would accept help based on research they would have condemned - a bit like the Star Trek voyager episode ‘nothing human’

    My opinion is that the Asgards and Vanir did not chose to ascend because of mobile communications.
    Kurzweil, our greatest computer scientist hypothesized that our increasing access to our technology and to each other will create a virtual neocortex over our own existing biologic cortexes. We already see elements of this with children posting exam questions on social networks during the exam in hopes of receiving an answer in time, they also post polls as to what they should do on occasions.
    It could be that neural implants granted them greater mobile communication, their concept of self extended beyond themselves to their computer databases and their community hence natural ascension would be seen as only ascending a part of themselves hence they had to artificially induce the ascension of the community.
    The technologic implants of the Vanir could simply be the neural links and body monitoring links of 10,000 years ago which the Asgard has since integrated into their biology with genetic engineering.
    The Asgard interest into Jack O'Neill was that he temporarily held the entire Ancient database within himself, a single individual. The Vanir and Loki's interest in studying humans is about how the individual concept of self could exist in a single individual. The lack of Asgard colonies and the few Asgards who space traveled indicates a distaste for the bandwidth and latencies of interstellar communication, the planet found in Atlantis that was designed to help ancients ascend had them living in primitive agrarian societies perhaps to distance themselves from technology and develop a strong sense of independent self-sufficient self. Even in our society, we benefit from the skills and knowledge of others, few airline passengers understand the fluid dynamics that allow the plane to fly, much of what we do and conceive of being able to do are only possible because of others in society. I see this progression of society for individuals to be increasingly interrelated and the possibilities of mind to mind and mind to computer interaction as being the achille's heel that the Asgards and Vanir are trying to address and the Asgards chose an induced mass ascension not unlike what the Asuran rebels attempted which with the Asgards looked to us as a planetary suicide while the Vanir who are 10,000 years behind the Asgards in integrating themselves together with their technology and to each other, still hoped for isolating themselves into individuals as the Ancients had done. Certainly makes those suggested weeks away from your smart phones more meaningful.
    I blame the Borg, Cybermen and Daleks on advanced mobile communications via neural implants too. Beware the Sprint cube...

    Too bad they (Atlantis) didn't think of disabling all stargates in the pegasus galaxy (such as with Baal's virus or akin) before reactivating the attero device rather than destroying it. Okay no more gate travel but no more wraith! At least, they could have disabled them and chassed them all around the galaxy like they did with the Ori ships for a time. That could have taken a few years to get rid of them all but it's so much better than the alternative... And then obviously shut the attero device to allow gate travel again. Or even study the device just to make a short range version. This could still have been a great advantage!

    • @OmegaOrdained

      No more gate travel temporarily as they knew how to defeat the computer virus. However, the Wraith showed they were quite apt at modifying the stargates and might have reactivated them to be vindictive and perhaps force a cessation of the Atteros strategy. Besides, other forms of hyperspace travel still worked so they would only have to modify their technology or co-opt the technology of others to defeat the Atteros device.

      they didn't do it because it was forbidden technology from janus. I just don't get why they called them Vanir, ok the fertility thing fits if badly but the Vanir were gods of healing with a respect for all life.
    It just seems like a lazy way to keep a theme.

    • @isty4491
      @isty4491 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the real Vanir (which BTW is NOT pronounced as veneer) had so little written of them, we just dont know the names of any but the three who lived with the Aesir (asgard)
      Oh sure, someone is gonna say but i goggled and found a list of like 15-20, but the truth is that is lazy research, many who have researched the Vaanir have simply thrown any name that wasnt tied to Aesir into the Vanir pile and called them Vanir, when really many of these fertility deities were simply stragglers, not tied to either Aesir or Vanir
      You have to remember there would have been hundreds if not thousands of old pagan gods scattered across Scandanavia and Britain, almost every village or town wouldve had their own local gods, or at least their own local names for their God of Death, Goddess of Harvest and so on
      So really the only Vanir anyone can truly name are Njord and his twins Freyja and Frey
      We can guess that Njord's Sister Wife may well have been Jord, it fits, him the god of the bounty of the sea, and her the goddess of earth, but its a guess, and besides Jord is written to be Thor's Mother which of course just complicates things
      But yeah, thought i'd write this anyway to try and dispel the popular misconception that "_If its not and Aesir it must be a Vanir_" that lazy theological historians have allowed to fester over the last 200 years
      So to be fair to the SG writers, theyre damned if they do and damned if they dont
      I mean they wrote in Dis, who was definitely a female deity (but male in the show), and where the name Disir comes, in other words Dis wasnt a single goddess but a clan of goddesses and other female magical beings, technically the Valkyrie were Disir too, as were the Norns
      But thats all too deep for SG discussion, and would probably require i write another ten thousand words
      PS when i say true, in reference to any of the above, it is with the caveat "according to the eddas and other sources"
      Whether or not the gods and goddesses of our heritage are real or not is up for each of you to decide

    • @ChrissieBear
      @ChrissieBear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@isty4491 Most fertility goddess names seem to be different names for Freyja. Lots of the gods had many names.

    • @isty4491
      @isty4491 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrissieBear Indeed, after all Freyja really just means Lady (as in noblewoman), it almost certainly wasnt the only name even _she_ was known by
      The various goddesses names are mostly forgotten largely thanks to christian scribes who didnt much like the idea of powerful women at all, let alone goddesses (heaven forbid!), the only reason they maintained Freyja and her split identiy Frigga (which mean Beloved btw) is because they wanted to paint Frejya as the original witch type, giving attributes of promiscuity, affinity to cats, magic and death (necromancy).
      Whilst painting Frigga as the good wife and mother, who raised children, stayed at home, wove, cook and performed other domestic duties
      Having the two serve as examples of what women should and shouldnt do or behave like, in other words if you were not a good wife and mother you were almost certainly a wanton women, a witch or a harlot
      All that aside, I - who identify myself as a Pagan - dont really care too much about their "actual" names
      I assume that both me and the god or goddess knows who i am speaking with, i see the names as various "hats" they have worn over the centuries and millennia and have changed them many times, in other words, they answer by the names we call them
      Also for the record, i view Freyja more as the fertility that relates to child and animal birth, and see Sif more as the feritility relating to crops and things that grow
      These are of course just my views, and i wouldnt wish them to be construed as me saying how others should see them
      When it comes to historical and mythological _facts,_ they are very few and rarely to be trusted
      When it comes to worship and spirituality it comes down to faith
