I socialized an 8 year old cat. It took 2 years and lots of bites, but patience won. He was never a lap cat but he was a good companion and trusted me until the end (at 15 1/2). Miss ya Nemo!
Just found a kitten in my front yard literally two days ago and he hissed but never attacked, even when grabbing him with my hands, he didn’t claw me but was scared and didn’t want us touching him but gave it two hours and now he’s under my neck purring. So small and incredibly sweet. My dogs love him, I think we are gonna keep him!
A feral kitten climbed into a hole under my vehicle and rode 30 miles! All we could hear was crying but we couldn't find him. During the wee hours I laid in the street with a flashlight and saw two glowing eyes but he wouldn't come near me. Finally I lured him with tuna. That was a year ago. Ari is now part of the family. Just a gorgeous, affectionate tabby.
When I was a kid, I ended up accidentally socialized a feral kitten in the neighborhood we lived in. I had no idea what I was doing at the time as I was very young. I just kept feeding, petting, and playing with him. Every day he'd come back for more attention and food. Sometimes with other cats from his litter and around the neighborhood. There came a point where he wanted to come into our house and my mom wasn't sure that was a good idea because of our other cats. But I let him in because hearing him cry was upsetting me. He got along well with our other cats but he did end up having fleas. We took care of that though and he became a part of the family. We took him with us when we moved from one side of the US to the other side. He was my first cat and he was a very good cat.
We rescued a feral kitten whose mom/siblings had been run over by a car. He was shivering and almost dead from thirst/starvation when we found him. We were out riding bikes and brought him back to our house intending to give him to a shelter, but he was so cute and funny that we fell in love with him and ended up keeping him. He play-fights with the cat we had before getting him, but they get along pretty well over all. He is now two years old and we love him so much!
i love the part where he’s giving her food and she’s hissing and backing up, and then she sniffs it, stops, and starts licking it. it was the funniest and cutest thing i’ve ever seen edit: it’s at 1:25
I don’t know why this didn’t pop up on my radar until now. I know it’s many years later … but I just have to applaud your perseverance. I’ve been doing TNR for about 30 years but have never bitten off a challenge like this. Thank you for demonstrating that it is possible.
A few years ago a feral cat hid 4 baby kittens in my mechanic shop, soon afterward I saw the mother cat dead on the busy highway that was near my house, so I started putting kitten food and water out for them and fortunately they were big enough to eat it even though they were terrified of me, one kitten a tom was more bold than the rest and he tamed down quickly, so I put an ad in the paper and he got adopted, then another kitten tamed down so that one got adopted too, then the third kitten was also adopted, until a little female kitten was left, she was the most scared of all the litter and I thought she would never ever be tame enough to hold her and pet her, but to my surprise after her siblings were all gone she quickly bonded to me and she even climbed up my leg all the way to my shoulder one time(that hurt! because she had sharp claws). But amazingly she became a very friendly and loving kitten and she turned out to be the very best of the whole litter and she also got adopted. All 4 feral kittens found homes.
So sorry you had to find out about the mother cat that way. I once saw a dead cat left on the road which really ruined my week and the image is still burnt in my mind. Downer out of the way, I'm so glad you took in those little ones and made sure each and every one of them is well taken care of forever! ❤️
I thought the same thing! She’s still ready to hiss, the expression on her face doesn’t change, but she sticks her tongue out of the side of her mouth and laps up the yummy food!
It wasn't hatred, but fear. If you watch Frannie's eyes all through the vid, you notice the pupils get narrower as she becomes less afraid. Along with ear position and tail movement, a cat's eyes tell you a lot about how she's feeling. Oh, and the paw-kneading also tells you that she's getting more comfy.
How sweet that you socialize the cats so that they can get adopted! All that work and then someone else gets to enjoy the results of your hard work. That's really quite something.
I usually get really upset seeing wild and scared cats, I love them so much and it's just painful to see them scare. This video ended up giving me hope and it was genuinely so sweet. I think your calm voice and the smooth grooves helped a lot.
I love it because it's insightful, and shows that human connection is needed before you can influence someone's beliefs. If everyone changed their mind after one conversation, then there would be chaos. Everyone would be influenced by everything. When having a conversation with someone, it's important to keep in mind their beliefs, and how they came to those beliefs.
@@clannahbanana5967 In reality, most people are deeply invested in completely illogical and false beliefs which they won't relinquish even if they are repeatedly proven to be incorrect, and the world would be a far better place if you could convince the average person with just one logical conversation to abandon their baseless convictions.
@Invictus perhaps, but I believe life is not so black and white. Everyone has reasons behind what they believe, whether it's logical or not. In my experience I've had friends shift their perspectives only After I got to know them personally and Listened to/respected their perspective. That being said, these were also rational and open minded people so that's a huge factor.
I love how there’s a “Spice Level” for kittens. I’ve socialized a few feral kittens in my life, with VERY different spice levels 😂😂. Feral cats are so sweet if you put the effort in..
Stoned Raccoon ........Thanks for fostering, rescuing kittens, cats, etc. Isn't it soooo rewarding! There's such a huge need for helping ALL animals ...... especially kill shelters, homeless, dog meat trade, etc. You know what I mean!?! I only pray others see the need and want to help. Peace / Blessings to you & yours!!
My Nehemiah was TNR and quite spicy. He was indoor and outdoor until one day he came home with a badly broken arm. I took him to a surgeon and three pins and one screw later he was healed. He still has a limp but now he is such a joy. He keeps me from being spun all the time (i.e. he keeps me sane) and he also appreciates me for helping him and providing him his safe place. He completed me in every way possible.
This video gave us hope. We trapped a feral kitten 4 days ago. He’s very spicy!! He scratches and bites and hisses😮. It’s our first time domesticating our previous cats were not feral. We will just take it slow and steady, we know we can help him!
Believe it or not, I'm working towards my masters in clinical psychology and these videos are deeply informative. The attitude the narrator has towards the kittens is incredibly supportive, understanding, and patient. We should all hope to be this to the ones in our lives we are entrusted to care for.
quasimobius bc it’s so much better to them to life their life as feral street cats where they are likely to fall victims to cars, the weather, predators and more
@@SarahH-ql5tnSome cats remain feral no matter what you try with them, love isn't always enough. Sometimes, catch, neuter, release is best for them. Being too friendly with humans is how so many of them get tortured, like in the last video I watched with a cat in it that had his ears cut off by some monster. Even house cats/pets get ran over by cars, we can't control every factor in the lives of animals prone to impulsively dart if something scares them. The "cat" has survived previous extinction "events" that other species did not; they'll likely out-survive our species too.
Bambi B Cats are farm animals though. Their purpose is to kill rodents within a specific environment. However, people are breeding and keeping them nowadays just because they’re cute. In reality though, when humans do this (regardless of good intentions), it ends up doing far more bad than good for the environment as cats kill other species at an alarming rate, all over the world. Therefore, the most humane thing to do is to not keep them just for your own pleasure, but to control their population. I say this because I love nature and wildlife in general, and thus am not partial to one species over another.
amazing how she went from hissing and being afraid at the sight of your hands to rubbing her head against your hands for scratches in a matter of weeks... really amazing to see this
This was defs the funniest moment, I kind of expected the next caption to be "This kitten had to go into the TNR stream because she was untamable". Nice to see Zooey eventually adapted herself to the role of a pampered pet :-)
I have one they thought might have been better off feral. "No one can pet him," but he was asking for belly rubs in a few weeks! Credit to PAWS/Project MEOW Philadelphia for so much of the socializing!
I had a kitten who was abused and treated bad when I first got her. She wouldn't come near me for weeks. But after a month with a lot of patience and affection from me. This cat became obsessed with me in all the best ways for 3 years.
@Mandi W sounds a lot like my Emma we named after my grandma. She was more afraid than aggressive after the first day but eventually she learned that we only want to give her love and affection and now she won't leave you alone for more than 10minutes at a time and turns 8 in June. She was approximately 4 months old when we got her amd was most likely born in May but we decided to not only give her my grandmas name but also her birthday because we really didnt know when she was born and making that birthday June 8th is probably not that far off from her actual date of birth. She doesn't care either way obviously.
I found a feral kitten that was about 8 weeks old when I managed to catch her. I never owned a cat and this was the first video I watched on how to care for a scared kitten. It was over two years ago. I just watched this video again for nostalgia and I wanted to thank you. That kitten is now a healthy cat and she is curled up to me now as I type this purring away. Her love is one of the best things that has happened to me in a long time. Grateful.
We are fostering a very spicy cat right now who was previously kicked by humans (she even has a broken neck from it), and this is the first video that actually helped! a) To show us that our previous steps were right and our kitty is already doing a lot better, and b) to give some inspiration for the next steps (hand-feeding). Thank you so much! :)
hand-feeding goes a long way. Some people go even further, just putting turkey on their chest, so they just literally eat off your chest. Associate you with food.
Gaining a cat's trust is one of the most wonderful feelings. I did it with a random cat that started hanging out in our yard about 5 months after our old cat passed away. I missed our cat so much, so I thought why not at least feed this new kitty. She's a young cat, absolutely gorgeous. At first, she was skittish, but intrigued by my presence. I started putting food in a small pile and backing away. Then a bit closer. Next thing I knew, she was eating from my hand after only a week. Now she actively looks for me, meows like crazy to get my attention, purrs and rubs herself all over my legs and the door, and even exposes her belly to me when she wants cuddles. I'm so happy to have gained her trust. :)
Humans need touch, too. Maybe not a towel but a fuzzy blanket or soft robe and a hug. Talk softly to them and provide with delicious noms or chocolate. Always have chocolate on hand for the female humans, though it can work on male humans, too. Soft, soothing sounds like Mike Nesmith ( *Tropical Campfires* ), or Neil Diamond ( *Taproot Manuscript* ) or Mike Oldfield ( *Songs of Distant Earth* ) or other easy-listening music.
Love, love, LOVE the before/after contrast shots at the end! I lost my beautiful Baby Girl on 12/26/22 and I find these rescue/socialization videos to be so healing. I swore I would never get another cat because no other cat will ever measure up to the last, but I know I'm going to break down. This is so helpful. Thank you for sharing these stories.
As someone who works at a shelter for dogs and cats here in germany I´d like to say something: thank you People usually don´t like to put in that much work to socialize feral cats. And just like you said in the video we don´t have the time to work that intensive with every cat. Most of our time goes into cleaning the place. When time allows it we sit in the cat rooms to get the cats used to us being around. If a cat is especially brave and curious we tend to give them little treats they have to fetch from our fingertips. There is nothing like seeing a cat making progress and sometimes even becoming a little attached to us. But in the end it´s no replacement for a loving and caring home. Therefor, again: thank you For all the work you do :)
When an old lady in my street died, they found about 30 cats in her house. Also wild kittens living in the cupboards and in bad shape. So I adopted two. I let the cats "decide", sat with my wife on the floor in a room with all the wild kittens and waited to see which ones showed some interest and curiosity. The first days I was scratched all over the place. I used the same methods as you and it took a lot of time. But both became the most loving cats ever. The female would not move from my wife's side and the male from me. He would great me every night at the garage, run immediately out of the forrest when I called him and, very unusual, wanted to walk around the house with me every night like a dog. Both had a great cat life until they passed away.
Beautifully explained. My daughter took a feral kitten in a rural setting, papoosed it and carried it around all day. By the end of the day, the cat was done doing feral cat stuff 😂
I did something like that with two different feral kittens. The first one was hiding in my yard and I managed to sneak up and grab him by the scruff of the neck. I wrapped him up and brought him in the house and just held him in my lap even though he was struggling and after maybe 15 minutes he started purring and I kept holding him for another 15 minutes. I used to raise horses and I learned about imprinting from a vet. With a new foal you just touch them all over and if it takes say 17 times before the foal gets used to you touching it’s ears, you keep doing it for 17 more times. So I did this with the kitten and he’s now the friendliest and most loving cat I've ever had. The second kitten, all black, showed up on my deck on a cold Halloween night, crying and shivering. I grabbed her and brought her in and did the same thing. She’s so happy to have a home! She loves being held and patted but she’s nervous with my hands so I’ll try hand feeding her. Thanks!
As a young kid I grew up in an apartment complex - The other silver teethed lil’ crotch goblins would torture the kittens and cats, one of them took a pair of scissors to an orange cats paw. Me and my mom would save all the kittens around the complex, we named the orange one Phoenix because they regenerate - we healed his paw and found him a new home as well as all the others (maybe kept a few 🥰) Thank you for being a kind human being
When I was a kid, we adopted a fully grown feral cat. She always has her fangs out. But now, she's the sweetest little thing. She still has her fangs, but she loves being held. It takes time, but nothing's impossible.
We had a feral cat roaming around the neighborhood before. Since it was a fairly small neighborhood, everyone left the cat alone coz it seemed harmless and never became a nuisance. The cat was weary and was aggressive towards anyone who tried to get too close to him except my brother for some reason. The cat won't go to anyone's house nor accept food from anyone. We would usually see the cat hunt mice or birds for food, and we never saw the cat go through people's trash. The cat would also approach my brother when he is chilling outside or doing chores outside. We wanted to adopt the cat but it really didn't want to come inside our house even if my brother tried to get him. The cat would also walk with my brother when he goes to his friends' house and wait for him outside and walks with him back home. The cat only leaves when he sees my brother go inside the house. Because of this, my brother got called names in school, the most popular one was "Cat Lady" even though he is a boy. He didn't mind it though because he enjoyed the cat's company and even said he felt very special that only he is friends with the feral cat. It went on like that for years. One day, some bullies cornered my brother outside while on the way to a friend's house. Apparently, one of them found out that his gf secretly liked my brother and was pissed. (lol middle school drama) and suddenly hit him out of nowhere but before the bullies could hit him again, the cat attacked them and they suffered deep scratches and bites on their arms and faces and one had to be hospitalized coz he got scratched in the eye (he eventually lost his sight on that eye.) One of the bullies' mom ( the neighborhood Karen) called animal control and we never saw the cat again. We were in school when the cat got caught. My dad tried to get the cat back because we were so upset over it, especially my brother, but they said the cat was already gone. We still think about the cat from time to time.
It is!! I tamed one of mine by wrapping him in a towel with just his head exposed and it worked! I pet him and talked him, 7 days later he was tame. Still skiddish but came out of my room (Door closed! Kept him isolated from Wittles, my other cat) and Wittles excepted him instantly 😻 I love my fur babies 😸😸😻😻
Hi Tygrilis, Yeah, I really felt stupid when he got to the part "If they don't like your hand, then they don't eat unless it's out of your hand." Oh, man! I could have USED THAT for a few cats I've known.
That kitten was probably starving out in the streets, sick and could’ve died in a fight, by car etc. This way she’s had proper care, a new family, a supply of food and safety.
@@lemonkerr3698 Yea sure ... probably. So probably your family was planning to kill or abandon you, or maybe a lightning could kill you, so i saved you. Don't make me laugh, what a stupid excuse you have. You can invent all the lies you want to cover your guilt feelings. In the video didn't show anything about what you said. This is 100% animal violence, by an unconscious guy. That's happen when you live in a city and you never learned that animals are not objects.
When people apply human emotions to animals 🙄🙄 it’s called anthropomorphism and its how A LOT of people get hurt around animals. You can’t ask a cat to act like a cat only when it suits you; they are animals and need to be approached as such, which means doing research on the best ways to handle and care for said animal. Anything less is irresponsible and potentially harmful to both you and the animal
@@ashleytupper6049 Exacly! So this guy of the channel is an anthropomorphist right? He act without any care in his regards, applying human emotions to him, as if he was his son. I'm happy to read some good comment sometimes ;) .. The people expands his ego to everything, maybe one day the norm act is to speak with vegetables :P
Haha, cats are safer being fixed and given their shots so they don’t reproduce and starve or get overpopulated. Unfortunately there’s places where overpopulation results will in disease and sickness. Separating feral cats at 8 weeks from their mother is safer because the mothers instincts will kick in. She begins to compete and fight dangerously with her children for food. But in this situation, the momma cat might not have been around and the kitties were given a better home and life full of love and not cold and hungry. (: I understand your anger, but your approach is a little aggressive and almost uneducated with assumptions and all emotion. I encourage you to watch more of his videos and learn a bit more!
You’re such amazing people to do this to help cats !! I love cats so much and have a mini shelter in my apartment in Asia, so seeing this inspires me ! Thank you 🙏🏼

Crystal Pope lmao cats will bite your fingers if they smell like meat. they dont bite hard but since your fingers are fleshy and smell like meat they will assume that it is food to be taken
No matter how alone I may feel, or how much I miss the cats that I have had, you, your family, and the rescue community are always an inspiration to me. You are able to show other beings that the world isn't always a scary place and you don't have to go through it alone. Will, I Thank you ❤️
Having done this many times, it IS hard. I still worry about kitties we adopted out years ago. But we know we found good forever homes for them and that they are happy. (I still miss each one.)
Break your heart a little bit with each kitty and know that YOU ARE DOING A GREAT THING IN THE LONG RUN FOR THEM. You're still loving them by giving them a home. 💗
This is how I ended up with my last one... I just couldn’t let her go. I fell in love with her while trying to hold her for TNR. She needed to be 4 months old and I trapped her at about 10 wks.
God bless your kind heart for rescuing these orphaned kittens. I am sure that God knew what he was doing when he sent them to you
Sad for the mother cat but I'm happy for the kittens ❤
This is such a wholesome story. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So sorry you had to find out about the mother cat that way. I once saw a dead cat left on the road which really ruined my week and the image is still burnt in my mind. Downer out of the way, I'm so glad you took in those little ones and made sure each and every one of them is well taken care of forever! ❤️
Great story!

I thought the same thing! She’s still ready to hiss, the expression on her face doesn’t change, but she sticks her tongue out of the side of her mouth and laps up the yummy food!

It’s the instantaneous hiss-to-lick that kills me.
She looks so surprised that she likes it! XDD
It brought me to tears😻
Kitten really went "I HATE YOU I HA- this food is delectable."

"when someone has a deeply held belief, they're not going to change their minds after one conversation" love love love this
However, if you feed them before the conversation...they might be nicer, ha, ha!
What is there to love? That's a bad thing.
I'm so glad all the spicy kittens have their homes now. 🏡 🌶🐈💕

Yes, every toddler kitty looks forward to being kidnapped and controlled by food-witholding/vending monoliths.
quasimobius bc it’s so much better to them to life their life as feral street cats where they are likely to fall victims to cars, the weather, predators and more
@@SarahH-ql5tnSome cats remain feral no matter what you try with them, love isn't always enough. The "cat" has survived previous extinction "events" that other species did not; they'll likely out-survive our species too.
quasimobius to
Bambi B Cats are farm animals though.

I adopted a feral barn kitten several years ago and she is more loyal than any other human raised cat I've ever met. I can't live without her.
Rodothea Robbe did her neck heal?
I hope she's okay, and good luck.
Poor baby. Kicked. That makes me sick.
Matt I thought that too; kicked?! Ack!
Do you want to talk about it 😂

Humans need touch, too. Maybe not a towel but a fuzzy blanket or soft robe and a hug. Talk softly to them and provide with delicious noms or chocolate.
Always have chocolate on hand for the female humans, though it can work on male humans, too.

As someone who works at a shelter for dogs and cats here in germany I´d like to say something:
thank you
People usually don´t like to put in that much work to socialize feral cats.
Therefor, again: thank you
For all the work you do :)
That's so cute when she was angry but licked the spoon. Sooooo sweet. ❤️

It just takes patience and kindness. Almost any feral cat will come around.
That is a great story. What were their names, how long did each one live??
I wouldn't be able to be a foster parent for kittens.

Thanks!

When she went from hissing to licking the spoon my heart melted
This cat had obviously found a friend in your brother. Good thing that he received some human kindness in his short life.

When people apply human emotions to animals 🙄🙄 it’s called anthropomorphism and its how A LOT of people get hurt around animals. Anything less is irresponsible and potentially harmful to both you and the animal

This is how I ended up with my last one... I just couldn’t let her go. I fell in love with her while trying to hold her for TNR. She needed to be 4 months old and I trapped her at about 10 wks. I fed her from my hand and played with her. She hated me so much!! It’s been 1 1/2 yrs and she has to sleep in my arms every night. She is my sweet Baby Bear!
I did it for years. what I liked was knowing I could keep helping kittens AND that I got to cuddle lots and lots of kittens
"I will tear you apart, you horrible monster!" "oh you brought food, well that changes things entirely"
"I'm still angry but this tastes like chicken so me likes"
