Fripp got Daryl to break house rules, because ..... He wanted Daryl to sing Heroes for him and for us .... Thank you, Daryl, for bending the rules. Thank you, Robert, for being amazing to your fans.
Robert Fripp is such a beautiful player. His signature on this incredible masterpiece is without dispute. Without Fripp this song loses a piece of its soul.
One of the best songs ever, no matter who is playing it. But, damn, Fripp's contribution adds SOOOOO much. I've heard so many covers of this song, but this shows how integral Robert Tripp was to the genius of the original recording. Thanks!
The story goes that when Bowie got on the phone with Fripp he told him that he wanted Fripp to record some "Hairy chested rock n roll guitar." So Fripp got to Berlin, listened to what they had so far, told Eno "I got an idea for this." - He set his amp up to "search for cover" volume levels, walked around the studio until he found the sweet spot where his guitar would feedback in the right pitch. Marked that spot and then found the spot where his guitar would modulate to the higher pitch and marked that spot too. During the recording he would step back and forth with his guitar basically howling for mercy. - It was done three or four times, and all takes were overlapped on the final version of the song. Creating this iconic "howling siren" part. Enter the rehearsals for the upcoming tour. Fripp couldn't be booked. Enter Adrian Belew, who was hired, was given a set list and the instruction to learn the songs. At the first rehearsal, Bowie and Eno find out to what an extent Belew had done his homework. Because there he was playing Fripp's "howling siren" part, all three overdubs, by himself. Bowie and Eno were in stitches at how Belew could actually play what was meant to be an impossibly to play guitar part by himself.
Great detailed rock guitar lore - thanks! I’m a drummer but also a huge Fripp fan - your story here is a great example of Robert’s brilliance and ability to be truly creative and ‘in the moment,’ not just ‘professional’
It was Mr. Fripp's guitar that instantly made me love this song, even though at the time I had no idea it was him. This was brilliant! Thank you Daryl!
Only underrated by people who have never heard him, ask any musician especially guitarists, thanks for the wonderful music. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Daryl, if you are reading this, please consider a tour with Fripp. Play the entire Sacred Songs and Exposure album for the setlist. That would be epic. Fingers crossed!
Sorry to be pedantic but Fripp doesn’t use an ebow- here he’s using special sustaining pickups and on the original it was just feedback from blistering volume (and putting 3 takes together for chorusing). But I agree- for such a simple part to be iconic is something special.
It sure is. Bowie was a big fan and inspired by cages work in Velvet...this guitar line screams velvet underground. As a guitar player myself i know some folks think this would be dull to play....its anything but.
Daryl, none of my friends understand how much work it is to make these songs happen. Regardless of who wrote it, or who performed it, no one understands the struggle to make it tight. You are the new Wrecking Crew
It doesn’t get any better than this. I think this might be your best cover ever. Daryl’s vocals were amazing, the band was superb and Robert Fripp, well he’s the bomb!
I really feel welcomed in to Daryl's house. Robert is such a sweetheart. This was a splendid rendition of Heroes. Fabulous musicians all round. Thanks. x
WOW! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! I KNOW THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF VERSIONS OF THIS SONG BUT WITH ROBERT FRIPP PLAYING IS REALLY SPECIAL AS HE CREATED THE ORIGINAL RIFF OF THE ORIGINAL RECORDING. WELL DONE, DARYL. 👏👏👏
Robert Fripp is absolutely right, the band is phenomenal.W.T.F. as deep as Robert is,I'm glad he got to experience the gresat people and the great music that is within the Walls of Daryls House. The band abnd Robert truly had a great time.Glad he stopped by.
Bloody fantastic...I grew up listening to David Bowie...this is the best re -take of the song I have ever heard ..beautiful sonics on this iconic tune..wow!
Just love Daryl and his band, what an incredibly talented bunch of musicians 👌 His singing is just outstanding and the different take on some fabulous songs is just awesome. He should release and album of some of these guests 🙌👏👏
LOVE Fripp's outro =a musical homage to his contribution to Bowie's "Teenage Wildlife". PS-Couldn't agree more with both Daryl's & Robert's takes on the day as a whole. BEYOND WORDS!!! (And I for one WAS reduced to tears more than once). Perfect toast as well Robert. PEACE!
Wow! I just had a senior moment! I remember "Sacred Songs" first came out, i was in college and used to rock that one to no end! Daryl Hall has so many dimensions and flavors; this show is a perfect showcase for him!
In the lysergic halcyon days of yore, there was a bag of cookies on the table, Grandma's Chips...The resulting jam started something like this 'I remember Grandma's chips, they remind me of Robert Fripp', most of the guys are gone, but to see uncle Bob like this is priceless!
... Congrats' to Mr. Hall and Co. on another very fine Episode; - Mr. Fripp' being one of my earliest and biggest "Heroes" and inspirations... One thing this version displays is just how great a vocalist Mr. Bowie was. Here we have one of the greatest Male voices of all-time having a go, and comes up a bit short compared to the original "Hero"... (Sorry Daryl') - {i did say your one of the Greatest}. R.I.P. David Jones and thank goodness Mr. Hall and Mr. Fripp are still going strong, so very Inspirational - T.Y. !!
Somebody call the Fire Dept. cause Daryl's house is on fire! When a room full of musicians click and all are playing their finest it makes for exceptional music.
Solid performance all around. Daryl does a nice job of singing it like Daryl, as opposed to trying to imitate Bowie. And Fripp, well, what can you say? Outstanding! (P.S. I love Fripp's hairdo; it totally works for him.)
Holy canoli. I thought Id never see the day.. Love Daryl's house again. Always right in the room. Now I search for Daryl singing Chicago. She laughs like the breeze.
When I was a boy the Berlin Wall came crashing down. The line ‘I Wish You could swim like the dolphins can swim’ was inspired by a teenager swimming to freedom across the Elbe river who was machine gunned to death by communist soldiers. And now, as an old man, this song continues to resonate today. ‘I wish I could fly like an eagle can fly’ for the children of Gaza City.
I love this song because it has incredible forward thrust and the lyrics are simple but profound; we all want to be the heroes of our own lives but it's always better with companionship.
Robert Fripp's contribution to HEROES should never be underestimated, remove his part and the song just isn't the same.
Well said!
Not just not the same....it doesn't really exist....the guitar part from Robert IS the song
Steady on!@@rab210
He is EVERY BIT as important as Bowie to the intent of this amazing song…literally in tears
Absolutely
Fripp got Daryl to break house rules, because .....

So well said. Robert Fripp has contributed so much timeless and influencial music.
@@georgebarry8640 He is a TH-cam regular now, along with his wife Toyah Wilcox. They are such an eclectic and funky pair!💕🎶🎶
when Robert Fripps starts with that guitar is like watching Michelangelo painting. That particular sound and playing in Heroes is history for mankind.
Iconic guitarist on an iconic song. God, how I miss David Bowie.
Robert Fripp is such a cool dude. His playing on Heroes is absolutely iconic, that sound is unmistakable.
Fripp and Hall both 77 - still smashing it - just awesome !
One of the best songs ever, no matter who is playing it. But, damn, Fripp's contribution adds SOOOOO much. I've heard so many covers of this song, but this shows how integral Robert Tripp was to the genius of the original recording. Thanks!
Daryl is still one of the most soulful singers! Not bad for a 77year old guy!
Omg, they sound incredible!!!😍
The 77 year olds are nailing it this week. Cher, Dolly, and Daryl are rocking on.
He is exceptional
77!!! not only the voice, but he looks definitely younger.
He may have that dick Clark disease where rock N roll does not age you,it keeps you young&young @❤..then again that's the beauty of good music 🎶

And to think Belew would join Robert in the new King Crimson some 3 years later is even more mind blowing!
Caught 'Crimson ' with Belew and and Tony Levine in a small London venue late 70s, standing right by the stage !
Obviously they were all Sensational!!
@@AntonyFleck probably early eighties, no?

I am a lifelong Bowie fan and let me say - this rendition is awesome!

This was brilliant! Thank you Daryl!
I'm so happy Daryl's House is back. We need it.
Veramente ❤
Great tribute to Mr. Bowie. ❤
Great to see Fripp on your show. ❤
So what about his wife, she is a great singer and dancer.
Is that Ron Jeremy on drums?
This a performance beyond description. Thanks to Daryls House and TH-cam for providing this.
At 4:08 Fripp throws in the guitar line from "Teenage Wildlife", from Scary Monsters And Super Creeps which he also plays on!
Yes!
You're right! Thanks for giving me an excuse to listen again... and again
Robert Fripp is an absolute example of a guitarists guitar player totally underrated but peerless
Underrated? A freaking legend!
Only underrated by people who have never heard him, ask any musician especially guitarists, thanks for the wonderful music. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Huh? Anyone even remotely familiar with 20th-century rock and experimental music knows who Fripp is very well.
He's not underrated. Who underrates him?
Daryl’s band is exceptional, Robert is spot on!
Really pumping groove. Fine vocal from Daryl and the usual exemplary playing from Mr Fripp.
what an absolute treat! I am so happy that Daryl's house is back!
Drinking my coffee in Thailand this morning and I came across this gem…….. so beautifully done. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Mr Fripp is a legend in his own lifetime! Thank you Robert for everything you have done and still do today!
Fripp's playing on Heroes is legendary, and to boot, he founded the best prog band ever, and easily one of the most innovative bands in rock music.
Daryl Hall, one of the best singers in the business, together with Robert Fripp sounds heavenly.🖤
Daryl, if you are reading this, please consider a tour with Fripp. Play the entire Sacred Songs and Exposure album for the setlist. That would be epic. Fingers crossed!
Robert and Daryl show us, that Music keeps you staying young.
Exeptional Perfomance !!
Totally agree with Robert: the band is incredible!
Mr . Fripp literally makes that guitar sing on Heroes. Awesome!!! The band is so tight. 😎👍😊
I never knew Robert played on Heroes it's so cool after all these years to find out that little nugget
Where ya' been?
A great musical and heroic combination plays Heros! What a professionals.
Smooth yet soulful rendition! The e-bow guitar through-line is such a distinctive, dare I say, iconic part.

@hoover728 , did Eno have something to do with creating that sound too?
Came for Fripp but stayed for the magic of it all. Everyone was great!
Love that rf brings the teenage wildlife lick at the end.
I love this song. Robert Fripps guitar playing is exemplary in every way ! I also enjoy the version by the wallflowers . Thanks everybody !
It`s not lost on him (Robert) how great this little group is. Played, mixed, and mastered all in one go. Thats how its done in a perfect world
The band is great but honestly for years it’s the sound guys that make these songs so good. I’ve heard they are tops in the business.
Great session, gentlemen! Fripp nailing it! Daryl with the splendid vocals. Band is tight and smooth running! Thank you!

Robert Fripp is a musical genius.
