    Thank you for actually giving the controls are chance instead of just complaining about the gamepad.

    "I found Star Fox Zero's controls to be awkward, occasionally frustrating, and extremely demanding... at first. But once I gave them a little bit more time - okay, to be fair, a lot of time - I found them to be fun, exciting, and incredibly rewarding. It's just getting to that point that can be a little tricky."
    Yup. That's Platinum Games for ya.

    • @PussPussGaming
      @PussPussGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ehhhh not really, dude. The only game of theirs that I had a problem with the controls with at first was God Hand and that was many many years ago now. If anything, Platinum Games might have the one mechanic that's odd at first but you figure out quickly.
      Star Fox Zero is different in that the controls are needlessly complicated for no real reason other than to make the Gamepad more important. Shit sucks :(

    • @siegherz
      @siegherz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +FlasherOfWangs Wonderful 101 had an innovative control scheme. MGR's blade mode... etc. And they were all for solid mechanical reasons. If you listen to the review, the point Andre was trying to make was that the controls are complex so you can do complex shit. Just like Godhand/W101/Bayo/Fighting Games and so on.
      Not every game has to have dull Arkham-style combat just so the controls aren't complicated.

    Wonderful 101 was the exact same thing. It was hard to learn but it ended up being really special.
    People should be more open minded to control innovations.

      I agree, but Wonderful 101 "clicked" for me 1/3 of the way into the game. It sounded like Andre didn't "click" with these controls until after he had beaten the game once or twice.

      Don't really get the remark about replay value. Star Fox 64 3D (which is a port of the N64 game as far as I know) shouldn't have that much replay value either when compared to Zero. If you want a similar experience just play the Arcade Mode in Zero. The decisions you make decide which path you take (just like in 64 3D) and if you die, well, try again from the start.

    Incredibly disappointed to see the overall reactions from people based on the comments on this video. This is a great review and honestly, it looks like this game is giving me exactly what I wanted. I'm getting a Wonderful 101 vibe in that it's difficult to master but once you do it feels incredibly unique and most importantly: satisfying. Gaming today is too predictable. There was a time when a first person perspective was new and awkward or when the 'stealth' genre was first invented and seemed alien to purposely NOT attack enemies. We NEED companies to push the boundaries of what games can be. People constantly complain that games nowadays are too easy. Well a game like this solves that. A sense of satisfaction upon mastering the controls is a great feeling indeed.

    • @rkenblade4489
      @rkenblade4489 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I completely agree with your thoughts, I simply shouldn't have to work to enjoy a games mechanics. It's not a challenge that's satisfying to overcome (like difficult games) but more of a hurdle to actually play the game.

      But I dont see it as work. A game like this has never existed before. If you play this wanting starfox 64 gameplay, you're going to walk a way frustrated and unhappy. This isnt starfox 64. We need to learn how to play this game. No different than the first time you ever learned how to drift in Mario Kart.

    • @littlefrank103
      @littlefrank103 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +World9Gaming I wish I could get the hang of motion controls like you can. I have tried for a long time to play Super Mario Strikers Charged with my friend, but couldn't get the hang of the controls. And it wasn't just a few hours, it was the years I've known him. I LOVE the gameplay, and how it looks when people make good plays. But I couldn't do it because motion controls weren't my thing.
      FPS was also something I was never good at. Unless it was with a mouse and keyboard, I would be terrible at console fps games. This also was over the span of years of trying to play. Mario Kart and it's drifting, wasn't too bad but again wasn't really good at it. I was much better at Crash Team Racing. For a while if I didn't have a game down for a long time, I would always have the option to try something else that better suits me.
      Now with the Wii and Wii-u, it seems that most games utilize this motion controls and dual screen gimmicks. And while that's cool, it's just not for me. Up until now, I always had another option to play something else on the same console. But most games with Wii-u (Or at least the ones I want) kind of centers around the game pad. So I'm sort of at a loss because most of my favorite franchises are in Nintendo.
      I know you're not directing your comments at me specifically, but I can somewhat understand if people don't like a certain aspect of game, especially if the aspect is centered around it entirely. I feel that people not liking motion controls, can be the same as not liking a genre of a movie, or type of music. And people have to cope with not having certain games in franchises because it's just not their cup of tea.
      This was a lot to read, and I don't know if you're bothering to read it all, but I hope I added another angle on the same situation without seeming like a jerk. Sorry IF I did.

    • @World9Gaming
      @World9Gaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      littlefrank103 I read it all lol. And yes I do understand your point. Don't get me wrong, I understand that by going this route, Nintendo is alienating a lot of people. I just feel like if you want a traditional gaming experience, that exists everywhere else. I like that we have Nintendo that does stuff like this. Without them, the gaming industry would feel very stagnant.

    • @littlefrank103
      @littlefrank103 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      World9Gaming Yes I agree, but I just wish that some games to either have an option to turn it off, or use it more effectively.
      I was playing Sega All star's racing transformed, and my friend was disappointed to not have an option to splitscreen with the game pad. Only people using a wii mote were allowed to look at the tv. So we have to get another wii-mote to be able to use splitscreen on the tv. So splitscreen is still an option, but just not with the gamepad with it's motion controls. This may not seem like a big deal, but it's just one of the little things that bother me because it seems like we're playing 2 different things, instead of the same. It just feels disjointed, and disconnected.
      Same with Kirby's Rainbow Curse, I never figured out how to get it on the tv, I had to do everything on the gamepad. The older game Canvas Curse made more sense because the DS had both screen next to each other. But Rainbow curse is like, this shouldn't be a console game or something. I don't know, I feel like i'm nitpicking, but certain games just fail at utilizing the game-pad and would have been better off if they added an option to turn it off.
      Don't get me wrong, some have options to disable it, and some even work better with motion controls, like splatoon. But before some people can get use to the controls, the developers have to utilize it more carefully.

    No one wants to look at a tablet screen and at the TV simultaneously, no one wants to learn controls they have never used before and will never use again just to play a game, especially when there is NO reason for any of this and it ads nothing to the experience. The move from the D-pad to the analogue stick was an innovation, this is just a gimmick. Nintendo, please stop making woefully underpowered consoles based on silly gimmicks because the sales of the WIi U have shown that almost no one wants this.

  • @LongNeckStyle
    @LongNeckStyle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    The problem with the controls is that we shouldn't have to learn and practice them when every previous entry had easy to grasp controls and handled fine with them. This is a video game, and a single player one at that. If it was a fighting game I'd get having to learn the controls since you're competing for ranks online, and heck, even 1000's of dollars at tournaments now, if it were a MOBA i'd get it too for the same reason. This is just a single player game I should be able to sit down and enjoy, not study and practice for hours to click with something as basic as the damn controls just because of forced gimmicks no one asked for.

    This review was _so_ much better than what I have seen from IGN and Gamespot. One of my favorite things about Star Fox 64 is the branching paths that require skill and a keen eye to unlock, and knowing that the new game doesn't operate like that is extremely important to me, and both IGN and Gamespot never mentioned that in their reviews. All I heard was ranting that the controls were too tough. Does anyone remember their first time playing a game with dual analog controls? I do. The first time I played Halo I thought it was awkward as all shit, but I stuck with it, and as it turns out it's a great way to play console first person shooters. Different doesn't mean bad, it just means you might have to put a little more time in to get accustomed to things and master them.

    Can't reviewers see what Platinum and Nintendo have tried to do with the controls, they've tried to give you some of the feel a real fighter pilot gets. A fighter pilot has a hud in there helmet connected to cameras all around the plane so the views of seeing behind you is a view a real pilot has to contend with same as looking directly below you. I love the controls and glad they tried something new.

    • @aronburton6289
      @aronburton6289 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not but there having to contend with special breathing techniques to deal with G force so there calibrating themselves to immense changes in pressure and force constantly, we have to press a thumbstick in to put our cursor in the centre of the screen which give you a sense of disorientation for a split second. Some people just want to pick on the smallest issues they have with Star fox zero, same as always for Nintendo people can't find real faults so they pick on the smallest thing to try and make there games look bad.

      I wouldn't have minded the motion controls, and would have gladly given them a try. And if I didn't like them, I could just switch back to standard dual analog controls.... Oh wait, nope can't switch back to dual analog. And that's the problem. They force the motion controls on you. It would have been very easy to give the option to people who don't like motion controls a classic way to play the game... II'm sure the motion controls become fine after some practice, but I just hate flailing my arms around when playing videos games. Until they patch in standard controls, I will be passing on this game

    Not allowing the voices to come from the TV (at least as an option) is pretty dumb. If they ONLY come from the GamePad, wouldn't that make it hard for Player 2, or any spectator watching on the TV to hear them?

      +Lakitu1134 No, because the Gamepad voice volume is quite loud. I agree there should be an option to put it on the TV, but it really does add immersion to the whole cockpit feel. Actually, not many people felt pain after playing Uprising, and in fact your body *can* get used to motions and eventually stop feeling pain, like the first time you play a sport your body hurts for like a week, next times are not as bad and eventually you only feel pain if you overexert yourself.

      You can't just say "not many people felt pain". There were reviewers and players of the game which criticized it because the controls hurt them. It hurts me as well! I wasn't able to finish Uprising, and I'm near the final chapter!
      And no, it's not like a sport, it still hurts. The way you are suppose to position your hand is just bad, it isn't training it, it's just hurting it.

    This really a disappointment, and I'm not even looking at it from a controls standpoint. This game has a 64 style story but removes what made the 64 version so great: the replay ability. Going back at any time to do one thing different so I can get a stupid medal is not what I had in mind. Throw in the fact that the only multiplayer in this game splits up solo controls is asinine. Nintendo could have turned this into a classic just like SNES and 64, but what we get is a shallowone time experience that I'll probably forget.

    • @Atx777
      @Atx777 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RetroGamerAaron Took me maybe 10 minutes to get used to them. I think some reviewers are trying to look at the Gamepad too much. It simply is not necessary to do that. For most of the Arwing missions, you can still play it like old Star Fox games. Free range levels are another story, because targets are flying all over the place. But these rounds have always been hectic in the past and the newer precise aiming only makes them more fun and exciting. The recalibration that is required every so often is unfortunate. It's similar to the same problem with Skyward Sword's first person aiming.

    Absolutely loving how everyone is either shitting on or praising the hell out of the motion controls without having played the game for themselves. To the people condemning the game just for trying something new: list of other games that had weird control schemes that are still really good: Kid Icarus Uprising, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Metal Gear Revengeance with it's parry system, and my personal favorite, Splatoon. To the people heaping blind praise on the control scheme: List of games that are considered classics with controls of questionable quality: Resident evil 1-3, Fludd in Super Mario Sunshine, Scribblenauts,Kid Icarus Uprising (The controls themselves are fine, but it can cause slight hand cramps), and my personal favorite, Any Zelda game with auto Jumping. My main point in all of this is that something being different is never inherently good or bad. All that matters is if that deviation is done well; and if it is done well, beyond that point it is up to the player to decide if they personally like this change. Like or dislike the deviation all you want, but please stop using "It's different from what I was expecting, therefore it is good/bad" as a basis for trying to prove that it is in fact well or poorly done. Me personally however, I'm excited to play with the gimmicks in star fox Zero, because if the deviation's this game takes are in fact done as well as Andre thinks than I think im going to love it. Of course there's also the chance that they were handled terribly and thus I won't like it. Im someone who doesn't care what's being done with a game as long as its done well, And if I think I wont enjoy a deviation, I avoid it, and recommend it to people who I think will enjoy it. This philosophy for buying games also holds true for genre's as well, I don't like puzzle games very much, but I can still recommend Portal 2 to puzzle fans because I know that it's at the very least a good game that puzzle game enthusiasts will most likely enjoy.

After getting used the controls, I found it really enjoyable. I don't know how to explain it, but shooting enemies with gyro controls feels SO satisfying. The climax, I also have to mention, while it's the same old setup with the fight with Andross and all, it felt SO epic. And that credit dedicated to iwata, made me miss him again.

      Jay M It's around 5 hours I think (I played a couple different paths before beating it). If you've played star fox 64, this will feel a lot longer because of it, since 64 was only a little under an hour. Plus, there is guard (if u got the packaged version), arcade mode (which is the one life runtrhough), and training/challenge mode with different vehicles. If u beat arcade, u get the sound test menu. And, if you beat everything to 100%, and i mean everything, u get to use the amiibo costumes without buying the amiibo (look at angryjoe's video on the game for more details, plus, he did a great review). Plus, even if u beat it quick, it's still so fun to go and replay it, just like 64.

I'm still planning on getting it, but now that you were able to describe the controls in more detail, I see where people are coming from when they say they don't want these controls, and it IS pretty weird that they didn't add any other options, but the way I look at this game is that Nintendo has finally made another true star fox game, so hopefully in the future possibly with the NX, we'll get an actual sequel with new characters, modes, and all that stuff. Great review by the way Andre! Doesn't look like one for the record books of Wii U history, but it does still look like some arcade-shooting fun.

      ***** Apparently you are one of those crybabies who disliked this video. Guess what? The only troll here is YOU for being such a crybaby and disliking the video.
      Even if the viewer didn't "agree" with the rating, GX definitely do NOT deserve a "dislike" for their "hard efforts" in making the video in the first place. If you (or anyone else) doesn't agree with the review, then simply STATE your disagreement in the comment section rather hurting GX by giving them a dislike.
      I have seen COUNTLESS kids who have made the DUMBEST reasons ever for disliking a video just because they are "fanboys" of the character OR, as I said in my first comment, are BIASED/CRYBABIES who can't stand a single "negative" opinion said about a character/franchise they love. (Which is what I was referring to in my first comment).
      The only "troll" around here is YOU. Now get GET BLOCKED and go cry somewhere else, little kid. - _ -

    • @TheInfinityMaster1
      @TheInfinityMaster1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrCracky32 Ok, if someone doesn't like the video, then why not just either LEAVE the video peacefully, OR, if must, then just make a COMMENT stating why that person didn't like the video. There is NO NEED to *HURT* GX's video ratings by giving them an "unnecessary" dislike when you can either leave or comment instead.
      Do you know WHEN I normally "dislike" a video? I dislike a video when:
      1. The title is *MISLEADING*. (i.e. clickbait)
      2. The information presented in the video is *MISLEADING/INCORRECT*. (which can lead to public confusion or misunderstanding)
      3. When I find the stuff mentioned/shown in the video to be *OFFENSIVE* for me personally (like bad language or racism or religious stuff or whatever else that can offend a group of people).
      The 3 situation above are THE RIGHT TIME to give a "dislike". But giving a dislike just because you "didn't like" the video? I find that to be rude and disrespectful of the *hard efforts that GX put in making that video* and so, a comment or leaving the video is sufficient on its own rather than disliking the video IMO.

I don't get how he gets that much credit nowadays, because he isn't that much involved in the development of games. He's just... managing.
      He drags the company down, and stated that when he has time to play games, it's ONLY games he had involvement into, and outright refuses to play anything that comes from the competition. This kind of mentality is a hindrance to the entire company.

      I feel as though Nintendo is missing a very big opportunity to corner a whole new market by not delving into multiplayer dogfighting within the Star Fox series. The genre is practically untapped. Seemed like a no-brainer to at least experiment with the concept in this game, but I guess Nintendo just didn't have enough development time left on the Wii U. Probably wanted to get this vanilla flavored Star Fox game out the door and didn't want to go though the trouble of halfassing an alternative mode.

    My shoulder is currently broken and these motion controls have made this game completely unplayable for me.
    Even with the motion controls off, the motion control is still on for up and down. While I can use the analog sticks to look around, I have to repeatedly press the configure aim button because the cockpit view is always drifting.
    The only way I can hold the controller is on my lap while I tilt the screen to look up at me. It's so incredibly frustrating that we can't turn the motion controls completely off or alternatively why are the controls so old school. The right stick should be move look up, down, left and right while the left stick should be move forward and back, strafe right and left. Those controls would make this game tenfold better.

  • @UrdnotWrex88

    So basically StarFox Zero is annoying to learn to play properly and then by the time you've learned the controls there's nothing left to do? I think you've just talked me out of getting this game then, shame since I've been waiting for another new StarFox for years.

      +Made In Heaven His idea of no replay value suggests that all the extra content that is there and does require multiple plays is void just because you don't have to replay the WHOLE game to get them. • @DustinDamas

    I'll probably give it a shot and here's hoping maybe Nintendo will patch it for pro controller support. But everyone seems shocked it's mediocre. It's like video game Stockholm syndrome.

      +Katie Baily no it sucks because it's pretty much the same game as star fox 64 the ending is exactly the same as in the 64 version, some of the missionms are exactly like in the 64 version, re-hashed and re-used enemies. i was hoping for a brand new storyline not a game totally dedicated to iwata.....

    • @slashingkatie7872

      +Stitches gets bitches we had Starfox games with new plots and new ideas. They were called Starfox Adventures, Starfox Assault and Starfox Command and as I recalled everyone complained about them. "Starfox shouldn't be walking in the ground! " "Krystal sucks!" "Why are we playing a Zelda game with fox?!" This applies to a ton of series. Game series tries something new. Fans are outraged. Demand series go back to "it's roots." Series does that. Everyone complains it's the same thing. Circle of life.

      yeah but they could have at least made completely new and well hidden stages and paths that leads to secret bosses like in the 64 version.
      it feels like i'm playing a DLC to that game.

  • @KelsonArwhi
    @KelsonArwhi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that I noticed in watching a walkthrough (read: blind LP) was that you begin each stage with the single laser, regardless of how you finished the previous stage. Understanding now the way stage selection works, that makes a bit more sense. But it even further kills any motivation to play the entire game through like in the old days. I feel like there should at least be an option to play the game that way, and thus keep any upgrades and extra bombs you obtain between levels.
    Beyond that, I still remember the original Starfox on SNES, and I loved the epic, serious feeling the game had about it. SF64 watered that down quite a bit (particularly with the main music theme), but we let it slide because of the massive graphical upgrade and the addition of voices. Looking at SF:Zero objectively? It feels like they made it even cheesier. On purpose. The character portraits, despite their increased detail, feel choppily animated (almost like watching fancy sock-puppets). And the voice acting actually sounds worse than what SF64 had. To me anyway. And that's not even addressing the control scheme and its learning curve, or lack thereof.
    After the spectacular job Nintendo did with MarioKart 8, I had really high hopes for this title. So far I find myself disappointed. (It almost makes me fearful of what they would do to F-Zero if they ever revisit that one, especially with regard to Mr. Miyamoto's assertion that a Wii-U F-Zero game would have some ridiculously unorthodox control scheme shoehorned into it as well.)
    In terms of recently released reboots of sci-fi game franchises with furry creatures, I think I'll take the Lombax over the Fox. Sorry to say. :\

      Dustin Damas I certainly wasn't expecting too much longer of a game. 6-10 hours would have been ideal, though (because I couldn't care less about high scores).
      But yeah, the problem isn't that the game is short, but that the controls take as long to learn as the game takes to beat the first time, if not longer. That's unreasonable at best.

    • @Atx777

      +earthworm jim You only need to look at the pad to set up better aimed shots. Most of the time, looking at the pad is not necessary. You can still aim your Arwing's lasers like normal, and even just use the motion control to fine tune the bead on an enemy, but during free range and boss fights, extremely precise aiming is crucial. SO yes, you will have to learn to do some multi-tasking, but it really is in select spots int he game.

    Poor controls on a game as demanding on precision as Star Fox is just unacceptable... it's bullshit that I have to keep adjusting my play style every 30 seconds to accommodate Nintendo's shitty gimmicks. This game isn't fun, it's horrible bullshit.
    For me, personally, this was the final nail in Nintendo's coffin... I'm sick of supporting this level of incompetence... I'm not enjoying Nintendo's direction of motion controls on every game they create... artistic liberty or not, I want the old Nintendo back and until I get it, I won't be supporting them any further beyond this point...
    Everything they've been putting out has been low quality garbage and I'm disappointed with it. If you look back to NES and SNES, every game they put out was magic... N64 it was kind of hit and miss and Gamecube, all I have to say is thank God for third party devs... I gave Nintendo a chance with Wii and Wii U but it's over for me. Another franchise and legacy shit on because of Nintendo's ego... I hope they fail and go bankrupt soon so they sell off their characters to Sony... it would serve them right.

    And seriously, did anyone believe Miyamoto when he said this isn't a reboot or remake. It is basically starfox 64 with added bells and whistles and a slightly different story. I mean the intro is literally about how Fox brings starfox back together because of andross after his father disappeared, just as if the previous games didn't happen. Maybe that's because of how the last game the released before starfox 3D was, idk. I liked the story, and the controls, no real issues, though it was a decently challenging game too!!! Honestly the gyrowing get's a lot of negative feedback, but it really isn't used much, so I didn't mind it. IT was more complicated to control at first but honestly I enjoyed the new vehicle.

      @PikaLink91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kasper Bährentz Okay. Then again, I guess it could potentially get a tad tedious if you had to replay the entire game multiple times, just attempting to get to a certain alternater pathway. I get that that was part of the challenge and excitement in 64, but maybe this is a better approach for some?
      And even one doesn't like this new "easier" structure, nothing stops you from going back to the first planet, instead of utilizing the world map as a short cut.

    "Now visually, the game's probably not going to blow anyone's minds". Is he KIDDING me? My mind was blown the whole time I was watching this because of the breathtaking visuals. And this is just a TH-cam upload. Which means the graphics are even BETTER when actually playing it. Wow!

      Well, I never minded the aiming in Kid Icarus so I'll probably enjoy this game.

      +Jordan Leung Eh, it's a bit different. Here they're just really complex and demanding, where in Kid Icarus, they were physically awkward and potentially painful.
