  • We pay tribute to OPPO, after the revered AV brand announced that it is gradually stopping the manufacturing of new products from 2nd of April.
    The company is well-known for its excellent DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players such as the UDP-203 and UDP-205, frequent meaningful firmware updates, & world-class customer service.
    Moving forward, OPPO will still provide technical support and warranty claims through a third party. A Dolby Vision firmware update to enable HDMI compatibility with Sony TVs is currently under testing at Dolby Laboratories, and a company spokesperson also shed light on future HDR10+ support.

      @@lilyflower6265 Wow that was entirely the wrong use case. I bought an LG Oled C7, but thats only for home theatre usage and will not be clocking up massive hours. Using such displays for Diagnostic Screens is just stupid. Personaly I like Panaosnic Viera IPS LED for diagnostic screens, less prone to burn in and excelent off angle image.

    It's a shame really. Companies like denon and Yamaha are starting to go back to releasing products that can survive through multiple product cycles, and companies like emotiva also have products for multiple cycles, and I think more companies should follow suit. The returns each year now are diminishing. The only things that really change, and what companies should focus on in their products are updates for things like sound codecs and vision data, aka dolby vision, hdr10+. I don't see any point now in having a new replacement product every year, and even these companies know it. A 2 to 3 year cycle would be the best strategy for companies now. Oppo will return I think, just when certain changes have come about.

    I was planning to buy the 205, but was dragging my feet. One day after the announcement I ordered the 205 from Audio Advisor and received it 2 days later. There was no way I was gonna risk a sellout and not get one. I've been using it for five days now and it sounds glorious. A very noticeable step up from what I was using.

    Well said. Such a sad event. OPPO should shop around for a buyer of their players so the product line can live on, if not ten they should release all their support documents and the source code of their firmware so that owners can fix and maintain the units they own, by themselves.

    I'm sad to see OPPO go. They are the best. To bad the vast majority of the public wants cheap and only cares about cheap. Buys only cheap products then tries to convince themselves what they bought is really almost as good....I love my 205. I was looking forward to eventually being about to buy the 8K version of the 205 in the future. Now that won't happen....Please come back in the future OPPO.....

    Beautiful eulogy. It's sad that the consumer market wouldn't support their efforts. They did everything the way it should be done: Superior designed products, superior customer service, superb value for the money spent....Anything Panasonic makes will NOT be a universal player and will NOT be delivered with the same attention to detail nor level of support.

    I had an Oppo DVD Player Long before their first review on Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. Such a shame to see them completely stopping rather than a reduction of scale. Although streaming is bloody convenient, as an enthusiast I still want access to physical media. This is worrisome for the future, where Home Theater fans will not actually own a movie.

    I have had my OPPO-BDP83SE for about 8 years now, and what a player it has been. I still remember unboxing it. The included bag, the box with the cables, and 2 BDs, one video and one audio calibration disc. It was truly special, and life hasn't been the same since. I have watched so many amazingly beautiful BDs on my OPPO, including the remastered Spartacus and Gladiator, SW: ROTS, Pacific Rim, Safety Last. I will most likely buy the 203 come Monday. Too bad they are ceasing production.

    Q: Regarding the UDP-203 and 205 UHD Blu-ray players, have you released a firmware update that addresses the Sony implementation of Dolby Vision in its TVs? If you haven’t issued that update, do you expect to? If so, when?
    A: We have firmware that supports Sony’s implementation of Dolby Vision in its TVs. The firmware is undergoing testing by Dolby right now. We hope to make it available to customers as soon as the test concludes that there is no problem with existing Dolby Vison-capable TVs as well as Sony TVs.

    This is terrible news for audiophiles. The 205 is the only mass manufactured product with great warranty with high quality DAC and Amp for headphone movie watchers. There are not many HDMI DACs out there, really a bad news.

    • @LevisL95

    • @unknownuser0006

      If you want lossless movie soundtrack then only HDMI has the bandwidth for it

    • @LevisL95
      @LevisL95 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toslink should be pretty damn good for stereo (=headphones). Unless you're into 32bit/384kHz/DSD über audio.
      EDIT: Now I checked Wikipedia. I was wrong about that 32bit thing, actually HDMI and Blu-Ray support 24bit/192kHz audio at best. So it's no better than Toslink. (However, Toslink supports only stereo uncompressed. For any more channels, HDMI is the only way to go.)

    I have never owned an OPPO product but I have been following ads and reviews of the company's multi disc players for a couple of years. When I heard this sad news, I was shocked. The only high quality build players for 4K Ultra HD that I have seen are the last two from OPPO. I have been a Denon fan for many, many years but Denon stopped making Universal Disc Players several years ago. I have one. I ordered one of the last OPPO UDP 203s on Friday. I live in Canada and the only store that was carrying the OPPO UDP 203 ran out of stock. I placed my order directly with OPPO in the USA. I hope I haven't made a mistake but if I'm right and this player is even half what it's been hyped up to be, I should have an excellent universal disc player for many years to come.

    Awww! was looking at a OPPO 205 to pair with a basic home 7.1 setup, however this news might be a deal breaker as I expect more bluray HD content will release with open 10+ over Dolby vision by default. 205's are quite pricey to gamble on OPPO support for HDR10+, at the very least it has to play ALL formats no exceptions, will have to wait and see. Can overlook HDMI 2.1 for now until the release of 4k/120 refresh panels along with compatible players/content etc hopefully early 2019?

  • @Superdimensional

    Have had a 93 for years and it was the first player I felt was an improvement over the PS3.
    I had definite plans to buy a 203 later this year or whatever model was avail during my next 4KTV purchase with Dolby Vision, but this news broke and I had to scramble to get one before they are gone! Finances not fully available without putting it on credit, I decided to sell my 93 and it sold very quickly and at a price that made ordering the 203 a reality and a “no brainer” with shipping and tax the OPPO 203 came out at just about $600 and some pennies, after selling my Mint in box 93 I only had to break off about $270. That speaks volumes about the resale value and reception these products have in the world. Similar to the Techniques 1200 turntables in the Dj’ing world. OPPO you will be missed, glad I was able to get your last player which I’ll have in a day or so. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 thanks for everything!!!

    Sad sad news. The best products and companies pull out because the masses are not willing to pay for quality.
    Cathode tvs are gone despite better picture quality and far superior colour accuracy, then Pioneer pulled out, plasma gone, now Oppo and now questions over Panasonic.
    My 2007 pioneeer plasma is still going strong and its still better than my 2014 Samsung LED LCD and handles motion better than OLED.

    • @dmmusic233
      @dmmusic233 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      oot with you I have the pioneer plasma still strong from 2007 never did anything to it out of the box picture great have the Toshiba AX1 HD DVD player we know what happen to HD , that's why I have a 65 A1 and the 203 great together

    • @davidm2364
      @davidm2364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Saying CRTs had better picture quality is subjective, but better color accuracy is untrue. There are plenty of LCD, PDP and OLED displays that can be set up for great accuracy.
      Agree with you on the benefits of Plasma though - I think today's OLEDs are better overall displays, but it speaks volumes about Plasma that it still hasn't been fully bettered in every category.

    • @oot007
      @oot007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David M
      As much as I love my Pioneer plasma when I compared it side by side with my 2003 Panasonic CRT the CRT definitely displayed human skin better. It showed all the nuances and imperfections of the skin which the plasma didn't show. The human skin is the best indicator for colour accuracy as it is the most complex to reproduce. In tv shops most LCD and OLED show animation, largely static images such as red flowers and scenery or movies with CGI overkill because to the casual observer the bright colours look impressive.
      LCD's show human skin as one or two blobs of colour, it doesn't look natural at all compared to CRT.
      LCD colours look fluorescent to me because of the permanent backlighting, there is little depth to their colours compared to CRT.
      My old 1997 no name CRT computer monitor kills my 2017 Lenovo Laptop screen and 2015 Toshiba Laptop. It wasn't until the Pioneer Kuros came out that Plasma could match CRT for black levels.

    Excellent tribute, Vincent. I own a BDP-93 and BDP-103, and had similar experiences with them as you relate here. Excellent product, excellent support, and a clear culture of trying to exceed customer expectations. I regret that I never got a 203...they discontinued them before I found out they were leaving the market. One comment about their rationale: I don't think they left because their business model was unsustainable, at least not directly. They left because physical media is rapidly dying off, and they likely watched their numbers dropping in proportion. We may see others leave the market for the same reason, and these are sad days for those of us who like to own our entertainment on physical devices.

    This is seriously bad news. I have not owned any OPPO, but have always considered them the pinnacle since those universal players a decade+ ago collecting top recommendations everywhere. In fact, I was considering finally getting one with my next TV. So even if not a customer, a bow of respect, hats off, thanks, and RIP :_(

    I got to buy a 203 two weeks ago from my Local Magnolia Design Center inside a bestbuy store in Burbank, California. I am extremely happy with it and wish I could have bought the 205 but it was out of my range. This player outperformed my Samsung UBD-K8500 that I was using with my 65 inch LG OLED E6. It is indeed sad to see them go. Hopefully they can make a comeback when tech changes in the future. For now I will enjoy the awesome movie and surround sound decoding experience with my OPPO UDP-203.

    Vincent Do you have any information regarding production stop of the Cambridge CXUHD ? ... as the Cambridge is basically using the same hardware and firmware as the OPPO UDP-203 and represents an alternative that may stay therefore.

    Ok I am kinda of new to the tech game and I just bought the OPPO203 because of what great reviews it was getting. Now they are going out of business and I see that HDR10+ is sort of catching on so is the OPPO203 going to be obsolete? Its not HDR10+ ready or will it ever be? Please any info on this is appreciated. As always Vincent great video. Thanks to Vincent and RIP OPPO.

    We've still got two OPPO 203 in stock and possibly a 205 where I work. I've been on and off whether I should buy one for myself instead of using my Xbox One X.

    Just a short note : have you planned to test the new official OPPO firmware fixing the bug with Dolby Vision over Sony HDMI connection. Indeed it's been released last week !
    Thanks and keep going on with your very cool and interesting tests

    Smh. I had been researching overhauling my HT equipment next year and was excited about the fact that I'd finally be in a pay bracket to comfortably afford an OPPO product.
    Now I never will.

    People can't afford to spend that on players, so no surprise really. Also they fix things quickly because there's not many products out there. Cambridge Audio is my new player and it's great.
