      @@thedavedillon Its all over the internet. Most times it says 2160p HDR and it plays in SDR. It should say HDR at the bottom normally. So the solution I found is to change the user agent on Safari/Chrome to Chrome-Windows and it works. Everytime though I start the browser I have to do it. Probably an update did this because when I bought My Macbook Pro everything was fine. I hope they fix it.

    You made the right choice Dave with the 16 inch" . I did order the 16" with M1X max 24 core 32 GB of Ram and 2 T hard drive . But I have to wait at least 4 weeks to get it from B&H store. ( tax free)BTW , I found out the difference between the 14 " and the 16" with the same specs was only $200 usd. So its a no brainer!! :))

      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Yeah for sure, the money isn't that big of a difference between the two. It's more about the portability, screen real estate, and battery life.

    I have watched quite a number of reviews on these new macbooks, and I find your videos quite helpful actually, so thank you first of all for that!
    I'm also not sure whether to choose the M1 Pro 16' or the M1 Max 16', for that same reason, the battery life.
    What my current macbook pro (15' 2013) struggles with the most, are actually plugins like "Reduce Noise" (from Neat Video) and "Cinema Grade". These are incredible plugins but they take FOREVER to render on my laptop.
    A lot of reviews do all these tests and talk about the battery life and how great these machines are when it comes to performance, but these are mostly edit tests with just color grading, luts, or just the high quality codex from high end camera's.
    I haven't seen anyone do a video edit test with these kinds of high demanding plugins I'm talking about.

    • @thedavedillon
      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Reduce Noise is a bear even on the M1 Max. That's a great idea for a video though. I'll post a follow up shortly.
      In short, I'd say if you're heavy into editing and make money with your laptop springing for the Max might be worth it for some future proofing and just to feel creatively free from worrying about the performance.,
      The M1 Pro is no slouch though. I had a chance to test them side by side for a couple of days before I returned the M1 Pro 14" and that thing was seriously impressive.
      Thanks for watching!

    So I decided to go with the greatest no brainer configuration 16.5" M1 Pro base model for an extra 200$ over the 14" M1 pro base model. Mainly because you get a bigger XDR display and it has more battery life then the MacBook air! Plus I get two extra CPU cores & two extra GPU cores which is a bonus for me. In addition I also upgraded the SSD to 1TB for future proofing. If you have any spare time and would like to check out my M1 pro unboxing with a beginners perspective since I only shot it with my iPhone 📹😁Thank you in advance and I hope you have a great day!

    Every TH-camr says. It’s heavy. Thank you. A good practice review. Battery life is a concern for me also, I have a 16 /24 core 32 GB model on the way. It’s good to hear that you get a solid 6 hours of editing out of it with video. This means Lightroom will be a breeze. Cheers from OZ. God Bless.

    Just returned my 14 Max with 64gb ram and 2tb ssd...rendering After Effects was painful and I'm back to my 2018 mbp to take care of that. The trackpad also was having weird issues...and I'm not the only one with that problem. So not sure what to do now...I'd like an upgrade from my 32gb of ram and 1tb ssd, and thought the M1 Max would be amazing...it is hugely disappointing. Today as I saw the spinning ball with a Photoshop file that had two layers, I couldn't take it anymore. Now I'm considering a refurbished machine but wow! they are expensive too!

    The problem with the max battery in terms of “all day usage” is at the moment, brand new it’s getting say 7 hours. In 3-4 years it’s going to fall short whilst the pro might come down to what the max is getting now. So that’s something to think about if you care about longevity.

    • @thedavedillon
      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, we'll see how they age,.

    • @Kluttzv
      @Kluttzv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically yes but that’s what replacing the internal battery is for

    • @Kluttzv
      @Kluttzv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes the battery maybe cut short after 3-4 years but by then you’ll either have upgraded or replaced battery when your battery cycle is up typically are 500 count cycles.

    • @matthewrk84
      @matthewrk84 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kluttzv Yes but it doesn't just drop off a cliff at 3-4 years, its a gradual degradation over its lifetime. If it's barely got what you need from it brand new its only going to get worse from there.
      That's assuming of course that you're actually away from power and trying to get that much time out of the battery regularly. Otherwise it doesn't matter so much.

  • @AlbyTheMovieCreator
    @AlbyTheMovieCreator 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you should have developed the battery life thing better. What about light use? How’s its battery?

    • @thedavedillon
      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I actually did a TON of testing I thought would be boring in this video. Even went as far as to plug the laptop into a watt meter to see how much power it draws from the wall. Long story short, in light duty tasks I got over 10 hours of use. In heavy duty tasks like video editing its more like 5-7 depending on the software being used. Thanks for watching!

      @@thedavedillon Thanks for your reply. This specific topic matters to me as to other people, but many others are not as mental and they don't care. Thanks for such a helpful video with a unique perspective on the 16 in inch than most other videos. For web browsing, emails, TH-cam, & Netflix and other light usage what's the battery percentage penalty on the M1 Max vs the M1 Pro?

    Now you made me reconsider going from 14 to 16 inch hahah very good video!

    • @thedavedillon
      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a very personal decision. Do you value absolute portability? The extra screen real estate and battery life are nice!

  • @RunForPeace-hk1cu
    @RunForPeace-hk1cu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s really simple. If you want portability and don’t need to ultra long battery life, get the 14”
    If you are a power user that need the real estate, max battery life, and ultra quiet laptop, get the 16”
    No need to justify your purchase to anyone. You know your use case better than anyone else.
    Btw, you can extend your battery life with a 600g 100wh usbc pd 65-100w powerbank by 80-100%. Then you don’t even need to carry a power brick (that weighs 250-350g) because now you have all day battery life.
    Which means for .5-1lbs more, you are no longer tied to the wall!
    😊

    Great video. I just wonder how you manage storage for video work with only 1TB. Do you work at all on the internal SSD? Do you have ultra fast external drive?

    • @thedavedillon
      @thedavedillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My workflow is to keep a "Work in progress" folder on my desktop of the internal SSD that includes any active projects (typically 1-3 at any given point). The internal 1TB storage is more than enough for this. Once I complete a project I offload it to an external 4TB Sandisk Extreme SSD temporarily (sometimes I steal clips/audio from recent projects) and after some time it's backed up onto my 42TB network attached storage Synology server and to a cloud backup.
      I am captain overkill... But this works for me. To be honest, if I had a huge internal SSD I'd be concerned about losing stuff or even the entire laptop!

    Consider this, Yes the M1 Max uses more power but the power draw most probably is cancelled out because of the time you save on your renders and effects. Simply put...you use more power but in less time. ;)

    • @thedavedillon
