  • Jeff takes a deep dive into building a mix with the Allen & Heath SQ7.
    This video is part of a series of videos diving into the Allen & Heath SQ7. Start watching for free: app.getmxu.com...
    Key Points:
    -Jeff builds a mix from scratch, aiming to create an incredible sounding mix in about 40 minutes.
    -See the power of high-pass filters in cleaning up the sound and shaping the overall drum mix, and explore the use of compression to enhance the drum sound.
    -See how Jeff approaches EQ and compression to make other instruments in the band sit well together with the drums.
    -Jeff works on tracks and samples, making sure they complement the overall mix without clashing with the live instruments. Jeff uses EQ and high-pass filters to shape their sound.
    -See the convenience of copying and pasting channel processing settings to save time.
    -Jeff experiments with different reverb presets to find the right fit for the mix.
    -Jeff explains his approach to processing, including EQ, compression, panning, and reverb to make them sound like a single, unified entity.
    -At the end, Jeff adds the lead vocal to the mix. He demonstrates his process of EQ, compression, and the use of parallel processing to achieve a polished vocal sound.

    Many years ago when Jeff was mixing for Chris Tomlin, I came up to him at FOH and asked him how to route the tap delay for our new Venue Profile. He took the time to show me and was most kind about it! We still have that Console at FOH and use a SQ-6 for Livestream. 😊 thanks For the awesome Content!

    I love these videos. This and the X32/M32 video are education from a mixing perspective, but also help me see the user interface in action. I’d love to see this across some other mixers like the Avantis, dLive, SD series, Quantum, and DM7.

    It could be his monitoring, I don't know what he listens to, but in my dt250s cans it's atrocious. Drums way too loud and overly compressed, bass nonexistent, the guitar, organ and brass were decent, but too low compared to the rest. Vocals were abysmal, especially the lead. I wanted to shove my hand through the screen and pull that 400 out.. As far as the console handling , no complains, but nothing to write home either.. I'm pretty sure the man's the man, but unfortunately it wasn't his day...

    The only A&H console I've used is a Qu-24 and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Nice to see what the famed SQ7 can do. It seems like a wonderful console.

    • @tesfadennis9570
      @tesfadennis9570 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s not horrible but it’s not the best…. It’s very limited is what I would say, and as nice as the SQ is my only gripe with it is the processing power….. once you’re up there with the channel count and FX and everything else running you will definitely hear the quality drop off. If you ever get an SQ it would be a good purchase for sure but I wouldn’t run it to full capacity. Now the Avantis is a different story, not that’s a great mixer I will vouch for any day of the week!!!!!

    Just curious, how are you mixing from a recording and not actually a live setting? Can I record our worship team and then do the mixing without actually having them there?

    • @arguy2021
      @arguy2021 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is called “virtual soundcheck”. If you google your console and the words “virtual sound check” you’ll probably find some videos that actually cover the process on your console.
      In general, the process is this: record the raw, multi-track audio to some sort of DAW. Each instrument goes to its own track. Then use your DAW to replay the recording back. The mixer receives each instrument as its own input and then passes the audio through the channel processing. This is what allows you to mix without the band. A lot of digital consoles allow this.
      Which mixer do you have?

    Thanks! Respectfully I bought my SQ7 for looks and to use as a studio console for pro tools and Logic only. I thought it was overkill until I got into atoms. Never knew it could do all of this and more. I have a bunch of out board gear that I will use with the SQ7 in the future. I decided to learn the unit in and out and your video taught me a lot! Blessing my friend!

    Very helpful and interesting video .... esp. since we are currently switching to the SQ6 (from Yamaha TF).
    😎😎
    ... while i like the mix in general the drumset sounds somehow disconnected to the rest of the band - more like a studio overdub (which it certainly isn't).
    I would have brought it down a little bit, add some reverb, reduced the gating and shifted more to the overheads.
    Also I missed bass and tracks a little (maybe a problem with my hearing situation.
    BUT no disrespect to the mix! It was done in under 40 minutes and with a lot of explaination!!! Shout out to Jeff - my mix would have sounded A LOT worse under those conditions. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
