    Fun fact: using used cooking oil in a diesel engine is better for the engine (if properly filtered) than unused or brand new cooking oil. The cooking process heats the oil breaking up hydrocarbon bonds in the oil making it easier to combust.

    I'm not surprised that it worked, Rudolf Diesel's original engine designs ran on peanut oil, however he switched to using petroleum based fuels because it was less expensive than plant based oils.

    • @jonathanfoote3309
      @jonathanfoote3309 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He switched because Dino diesel was a waste byproduct of the distillation process, referd to as “cracking”, to make gasoline. The lighter compounds vaporize first and are distilled out while leaving the heavier carbon chains behind. Ultimately you have grease left over and propane as one of the lighter chains. At the time there was no use for the intermediate chains like diesel so it was discarded as waste until Rudolph Diesel started using it in the Diesel engine. Heavy oil was used in shipping and is still used in a lot of the large ships today. At the time both peanut oil and Dino diesel where waste byproducts of the processing of oil and peanuts.

    You can run ANY diesel on soy oil and vegetable oil, the diesel motor was originally designed to run on PEANUT OIL. So this is no big deal, I have ran pickups,semi and tractors on oil. I lost NO power had cleaner running and it smelled like burnt French fries going down the road. It will run down to about 40° then it will start to gell up but you can use pure ethanol to thin it out. 5 gallon into 100 gallon of soy oil. And LOTS of folks do this we just dont talk about it because there is NO ROAD TAX on it and due to that fact it is ILLEGAL unless you have road tax on it. And the oil has NOTHING to do with the tyranny issues they had.

      @@hperryesq A quick check seems to indicate that that's determined on a state by state basis. A cursory examination seems to show that my state, Ohio, does not have a road tax on alternative fuels. And I can't find anything definitive at the Federal level, at least not in the quick poke around that I took.
      Of course, look further into it before doing it, specifically because it's not a cut and dried tax across the board.

    What you need is an alternate tank with your make-shift fuel ... start it with regular diesel put a slight load on the engine ..headlights on bright ac motor on high etc ... then have a valve , electric , or manual operated to switch to the alternate fuel ... it would also be wise to take 4 or 5 feet of copper tubing & wrap it circular & smooth closest to the exhaust header as you can to warm it up before it hits the pump ... and strain the hell out of that fry oil several times ... trust me , this is the best way to pull this off successfully !! 😎

    I ran this stuff in an older Mercedes diesel for years! Yes it definitely went through some fuel filters, and in the winter youd need to come up with a way to heat the fuel so it was thin enough to go though the injection system. Also some people who run these in colder weather thin out the oil with gasoline, i tried this it works well and runs the same. In the end i put thousands of KMs on this car and never had an issue related to the fuel system or result of not using proper fuel.

    The 7.3 is actually one of the best Diesel engines to use veggie oil in. The fuel rails are dead heads in the cast iron heads. So if you take the plugs off the opposite ends of where the fuel lines come in to the heads you can easily plumb the fuel rails with veggie oil on one side and the OEM sides get left plumed to the OEM tank. Then you just use a secondary pump and a transfer switch connected to the auxiliary tank for the oil. With the fuel rails being inside the heads the fuel will pre heat in the heads prior to the injectors. Just make sure you flip the switch back to the OEM tank 5mins from your destination so the OEM fuel system and heads are flushed and primmed with Dino diesel so you never run the risk of having oil that will gel in lower temps in the fuel system for start/warm up. Great system for longer 1hr plus drives but not good for short in town trips due to the warm up and then purge cycle needed to safely switch to the oil tank. Also make sure you run the oil through 1mic filters prior to putting in the tank. Particulates 1-5mic are what damage the injectors and system because the fuel bowl filter is usually 5-20mic depending on the brand.
    DM me for more information. I have several 7.3s and run them all on WVO and or black diesel on my ranch

      How does the wiring work for switching from diesel to oil? Is there a two way switch for the main fuel pump and then when the switch is activated it turns on the oil pump simultaneously? I’m wondering how to prevent a momentary loss of fuel smoothly.

    I legit know a guy who converted his diesel truck to run on used cooking oil, like 15 years ago... added a huge tank specifically for the cooked oil, a pump, and switch system to change between reg diesel/oil... it's a solid idea, but any unburned oil will clog the engine eventually. and, of course, 'activated' oil will only work.
