Running on pure ATF is actually really, really common in the IDI Diesel community. When swapping the water separator, it’s actually advised to completely fill the new filter up completely with just ATF to prime the fuel system and also clean out the injectors. They run really well on the stuff because most all-mechanical indirect injected diesels have prechambers, which is heated due to the glow plugs on startup, and the natural warmth created by the engine running. The combustion starts in these chambers and spreads to the cylinder on the power cycle. Newer electric direct injection diesels don’t have these prechambers and have a cup built into the piston instead. They don’t run pure oil/ATF as efficient as the mechanical IDI’s do, and usually require the oil/ATF to be cut with spirits to run properly.
I came across this vid because I wanted to know if running atf on my Toyota 12ht could clean my injectors and not hurt injector pump.

@@mikep780 in the fact that final gear and both are 4 speed automatics and share a bunch of simularities other then a 700r4 is a linkage driven and far more reliable then the 4l60e then you are partially correct the 4l60E is the predecessor but it is far from the same as it is known to fail in even low power applications like my 02 blazer xtreme or where as the 700r4 i had in both my 90 chevy stepside and 89 s10 4.3 were tanks the 4l60E already feels like glass in my 02 blazer xtreme with under 50k miles on (well 49960ish)

For the trans, buy a ton of that Lucas Stop Slip or whatever and fill the whole trans with it and see how it acts.

You need some sort of trans fluid in there. Filling a trans with all Lucas stop slip will burn the trans pump up.

Older truckers used to do that too. I heard it cleans/lubes the injectors.
"Isn't worth much" That truck right there being pretty decently clean. It worth about 5k minimum. Steering box is 270 bucks from bluetop. Maybe if you guys didn't drown the truck in a pond your transmission wouldn't be slipping.

Back in the early 90s I worked for an old school farmer who was into tractor pulls and mud bog trucks.he had a 4 Chevy 3/4 ton pickups with 6.2l diesels in them .he used to add 1 quart of gas mixed with 1 quart of atf to all his competition rigs .he claimed it worked as a form of octane boost to the diesel fuel.not sure if it was or not myself but he must of had something right because he won several events.but then again we all know some crazy old farmer that has little tricks up their sleeves when it comes to mechanical stuff,most can make something out of nothing. And back then turbos were almost unheard of on smaller vehicles like pickups.anyway cool video at least we now know in a pinch it may run like crap but atf can be a fuel for diesels.thanks for sharing.
Grandpa told me before glow plugs they would mix like 20% gas and diesel to get them to run in the winter. And also they would light small fires underneath bull dozers oil pans to warm them up in sub zero temps. Before they invented block heaters
There is a drain valve on the fuel bowl. It will keep you from getting radioactive horse piss in your eye. Aka fuel. Also u can just open the drain and leave the fuel pump on to drain the fuel system. Some additional information. The reason the truck stumbled at first was because their was air in the system. It helps if you fill the fuel bowl before starting the truck.

Once my buddy had no diesel in his 7.3 and I gave him like a bunch of bottles of used moter oil and he got like a quarter tank and it ran fine but sooted alittle lol

I'd rather gift my friend 20 bucks to get some diesel rather than let him burn UMO. :( So much fine metal particulates and soot suspended in it. Synthetic and synblend motor oil doesn't burn well because it's specifically designed NOT to burn to avoid oil consumption in normal use.
They mix it in to take advantage of the detergent additives in the fluid to super clean the injectors and fuel system.
Mercedes told my father about doing this 45 years ago in his diesel sedan.
Yep! My father worked on old in-line diesel Mercedes and all the old mechanics used ATF in the diesel fuel

When the engine runs poorly it has to adjust everything including the transmission to compensate, so most likely the transmission is probably burning up from the engine running poorly. I had that rare occurrence with my Expedition when it needed new spark plugs bad, would just go into neutral with a flashing o/d light and wouldn't make hills, changed the plugs and the transmission was happy after that. Transmission is the original 19 year old Metric 4R100 that I don't think has been ever touched. Still pulls good. I am surprised how well the tc has held up but then again it's been a daily driver it's whole life and hasn't seen a lot of trailer use.
I ran out of fuel one time in my semi truck. I had 4gallons of oil. And one quart of transmission fluid. Put the transmission fluid the filter and the oil in the fuel tank. It wasn't happy but got me there.

I ran my 7.3 for 6 months and 15,000 miles on almost strictly USED ATF. Never had an issue.

It won't work. Atf is formulated to have non newtonian properties at high speeds, to create the mesh in the torque converter. Diesel, does not.

Novice Garage IDEA! Run the truck on LAMP OIL! is it Kerosene with the same wax liquid in diesel fuel. Comes in red and blue and maybe clear if I recall. THAT would be interesting.

Either the power is way down due to fuel type or that motor is worn out. They do a nasty burnout stock. (I’ve had 2) Old 7.3 powerstrokes and cummins 12valves will run on anything.
The atf should clean those injector good .....and it shouldnt smoke too much .....if mixed with diesel. That and half a quart in the crank case in the oil....a way to trick passing diesel emissions ..in places that have it. i do the crankcase bit with my gas engines ....when hwe had emissions...now cancelled.....Hey Chris 😎
How long will a 7.3, or a 6.0 last if you run straight tranny fluid or black oil? Looking for a full time substitute.
Actually ATF is used to clean injectors in engine, but few liter in tank, and then fill it with diesel, old school trick ;)

In Canada because of the cold, most diesel owners, farmers and truckers carry ATF with them because in the fall and spring we get cold snaps where a diesel can freeze off if its not winter diesel. So you add ATF to keep your tanks and lines from freezing off when driving. because the cold wind can otherwise freeze off summer diesel in your fuel lines.

Also good for getting a huge ticket when the cops check your diesel to see if you're running red/pink tax free off-road only diesel fuel on the city streets. The red dye in ATF makes the whole tank turn pink just like the off-road stuff. No bueno.

@@Yeye3040 I meant Fuel FIlter..LOL We are talking way old school late 70's mid 80's. Whenever I had to replace the fuel filter I was instructed to prime it with ATF it would super clean the injectors, or so I was led to believe. 888K miles on the Cummings, never lost an injector.

When you clean up the atf on the ground just light it on fire atf is very flammable.
You should do these tests in a 6.9L IDI diesel, it is alot more forgiving.

The reason they add ATF is to lube up their vital fuel related components.
There’s a drain valve behind the fuel filter housing or fuel bowl. It’ll drip under the truck onto the road but it’s faster if you don’t care about the road lol.

THe question was asked if a diesel engine can run on gasoline. Tests have shown that it works well, but parts that require the lubricity of the diesel fuel, like the fuel pump, will wear much faster.

I run atf in my fuel filters, cleans injectors nicely.
