    I'm even more fascinated by your multiple talents than by the venerable X230, Dave: You're an author, multi-instrumentalist, master of using budget hardware to its fullest potential, and...tea drinker :-) Oh, and Polyphia is indeed a great band: th-cam.com/video/CXBC5mg9tRA/w-d-xo.html

    I have an x230 I’ve used since 2012 this laptop is still capable of keeping up with todays laptops, I’m so surprised ibm was way ahead of its time on this one

    I've been using an x230 for my daily-driver for the past year, and I see no signs of stopping anytime soon.
    I have a T430 docked at home on the office desk (with external display, and a 2011 27" iMac coupled with Synergy kvm software), and an x230 I carry at work. I often VPN into the home office from job-sites to interface with the t430 and my NAS. When I come home, I sit down in front of the docked t430 with a track-ball and mechanical keyboard. I love it. I bought the t430 as an upgrade project at the start of the pandemic, and got the x230 for a more travel-friendly alternative when I went back to work in August 2020. This has been my daily-driving setup ever since.

    • @TechDave
      @TechDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Love it!
      I'm intending to keep using the x230 in a very similar way, so light and compact that I pretty much keep it on me whenever I leave the house!
      I used my own t430 docked with 6 cell battery ( lasts about 1 hour) for music production/ recording, and then I've got a 9 cell for it if I need to go off site for music too!
      I've used Synergy kvm before, great software, if ur Windows "mouse without borders" is another great alternative(although not usable for mac obvs, so not sure if that relevant info lol)

    Dave, I'm very much looking forward to watching your X230 update! Your videos were a deciding factor for me to get a X230 and while in my case it wasn't exactly a steal (I bought it for € 170*), I'm VERY happy with this workhorse of a machine which is full of nice design details. I'm running Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 and I'll soon switch an SSD for its current 320GB HDD :-) /// *The laptop is in very good condition and has a 9-cell battery.

      Oh my! I'm very pleased to hear that!!
      The SSD upgrade makes a HUGE difference, I think u will be very pleased! €170 isn't a bad price if its in good condition. They can go for up to £300 on ebay, as they retain their value well as they are such solid devices

      @@justvasili3483 nice! I'm looking forward to doing it, I used to have an x200, and the keyboard feel was second to none!

      @@TechDave If you bought the palmrest as well as the keyboard you don't need to trim anything, you just have to attach the keyboard and plamrest simultaneously. All the screws fit properly except one of the ones in the middle, which is a little funky to get in, but also somewhat fits. If you haven't checked out the thinkwiki there's a detailed explanation there.

    Hi Dave, I've just got one of these today and plan to use it for audio production. Can I ask what FireWire card you used? I've an old Focusrite interface I'd like to use with it.

    • @TechDave
      @TechDave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i use an alesis 8 channel firewrie & a project mix/io but u'll need a firewire to expresscard adaptor, and they can be quite pricey. £60+ on uk ebay
      i can double check the exact mdoels/mdoel numbers for u if u like (of the soundcards)
      as long as uve got the expresscard adaptor (and a compatible OS eg: win10 or below) u shud be golden, but mileage may vary depending on driver support for ur focusrite

    • @TechDave

      @bobbiejoe123 best of luck! I used Windows 7 drivers for both interfaces I use, so they may work *if* u can get them to install. Failing that, u cud even dual boot ur system with win7 and airgap the system?
      If u do there's an offline update thing for win7 & for drivers I'd recommend snappy driver installer
      It may even help u get the ur focus rite working, Lord knows its saved me a lot of searching before
      Edit:
      I've defo gotten strange devices working on win10 with snappy driver, a must have software/driver installer
      I keep it on my ventoy (multiple OS installer usb) and it's a god send, especially when keeping systems offline

      Hey! I actually saw ur reddit post: yes it will bottleneck the card, for a variety of reasons, however, it will still be a massive performance increase graphically as long as u use an external monitor. Have u looked into the exp beast dock v8.5 to connect it to ur t430?

    Would you switch to Linux?

    • @TechDave
      @TechDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ive considered this many times, but for now there's just too much proprietary that i own on windows to make the full switch yet

    • @TechDave
      @TechDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Time will tell though!! I've got a couple of machines I've tried manjaro and mint on, and I really enjoyed i3wm on my x200. Perhaps when I've done the x220 keyboard swap i may Try it again!

    • @mt401_
      @mt401_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the performance boost, and all the benefits of running open software, it is very attractive to dive into Linux.
      Also as time goes on and you get very used to the Windows workflow, it will be harder to make the switch, and it is even harder if you keep adding more proprietary software.

    • @TechDave
      @TechDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mt401_ agreed!
      tbh, after ur comment one of the first things i did was put an ssd i had with Ubuntu 20 on it in my x230, installed i3 and am currently learning the shortcuts & *thoroughly* enjoying myself!
      i will still keep WIn10 on my main laptop (thinkpad p51 w/ eGPU, same gpu featured in this video) as i need to use the adobe suite & Ableton 11, but for now my x230 is currently now running Linux.
      any distro best suited to i3 that isn't gigachad arch? sincere question! needs to be stable and have long term support. thinking of manjaro & PopOS as ive been meaning to try them both at some point
