- In 2015, Yogyakarta's Sultan Hamengku Buwono X decreed that his own royal title be tweaked to make it gender-neutral. The sultan - who has five daughters and no sons - then bestowed on his eldest daughter a new title - Mangkabumi - which had traditionally been reserved for male princes groomed for the throne. Even before Islamic era, female leader was no alien for Nusantara people. In Java, there were names like Ratu Shima, Pramodhawardhani, Tribhuwanottunggadéwi, Suhita. Even in the most Islamic area, Aceh, a Sulthanah (female Sultan) was not something strange.
And even while being ruled by women, those kingdoms began reach its golden era. Tribhuwanottunggadewi of Majapahit, or Sultanah Safiatuddin of Aceh Darussalam, those are the example.

but he still have a cultural and self defense rights. (Sultan doesn't protected by regular bodyguard like MP or army but his abdi dalem has been trained by silat, Kanuragan/ prana power and also have basic military skill like using gun or secret intelligence body sign.)

Yogyakarta is muslim majority. Sultanate of Yogyakarta is officially following and practicing islam. While they are Muslim, the royal court’s rituals are steeped in mysticism, as part of their Hindu, Buddhist, and animist history.
its much more complex than a mere muslim or hindu, as there are different subcultures within muslim in indonesia. yogyakarta royals were classified under 'priyayi', the traditionalist. they basically syncretized much of their traditions in adopting islam, as it goes along with the teaching of islamic mysticism (sufism).
contrasting with the 'santri', where the subculture tend to prefer more the purist form of rituals in islam.
