I'm doing a project on gamelan and needed to know the name of this piece. Thank you so much you're a lifesaver
I thought "Ubud" as soon as I saw/heard them. Great skills.

What people don't know is that gamelan hits different when you're listening it live. The vibration of the instruments shakes your soul, your heart beat races to the beat. It's beyond amazing.
I mean, music concerts or classical music are also better when listening in person, but gamelan is next level. People should put gamelan in their bucket list, experience it once in your life before dying. You won't regret it.
just get a really good audiophile grade speaker on an acoustic treated room, if u dont want to hire someone to play gamelan for u or travel to indonesia.
Live performance is always electrifying in it's immediate impact and intimacy. The very texture of music is different in live performance, and these people are great performers. Wish I could go there. I've heard beautiful recordings of all kinds of music, but there is no substitute for being there.
The gamelan specifically the higher notes on it have varying pitch by just a few hertz so it creates an auditory “wurble” so to speak. This “wurble” is often used in meditation music and was discovered by the Monroe institute in the 80’s to be an extremely effective way to synch the hemispheres of the brain.
@@Weenmeen this is the 'nerd' explanation that i need. lol. Thanks.
Pretty sure this is specific to the Balinese gamelan, as opposed to Javanese or other variants, since in Bali pairs of identical instruments are intentionally tuned somewhat different from each other
There is something to surreal about this music. It feels so futuristic yet tribal at the same time. One of the instrument even sound like a synthesiser. Fun fact, Debusy was inspired by Gamelan music after hearing it at the Paris Expo.
The instrument is really prevalent in the soundtrack for Akira.
Exactly what I though about when I was watching the video! It's almost like you listen to some trip-hop(ish) or abstract electronic stuff. It's amazing.
Listen to some Jon Hassell if you are further interested into that concept of futuristic tribal music, although it is to be understood that he has an outside perspective on the music he references.
@@mirkanduvarci6126 thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

I came here because my World Music professor (@University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada) decided to add Balinese gamelan to the curriculum when she took over the course. End of class project was to listen to a piece of simplified gamelan and try and transcribe what we heard. Such amazing, intricate, cyclical music. It was an intro course, and I learned that Western music is linear (with a distinct beginning, middle and end) whereas gamelan is super cyclical. I liken it to boss music in video games 😂 I love it though 💖 I hope I can go to Bali one day to see it performed. The vibrations must be amazing!
not a music major so i never figured out the right adjectives to describe southeast asian music, thank you for this comment!
That is great..nice to hear that,,hope you succed with that,,come to my place,,there is some example of traditional instrument music from indonesia, including gamelan Bali-Java and sunda..
not only in music, the sense of time also cyclical in eastern tradition
You know, listening to Gamelan music always brings a smile to my face but I never seem to understand what people mean when they say that western music is linear in contrast to the cyclical nature of, say, gamelan music. I might be a bit thick in the head but I've listened to plenty of western music and I find a vast number of works/styles that are either more cyclical than linear (whether in its tonality changes, harmonic progressions, phrasings, use of ornamentation, melodies... even in its philosophy, not just in its form), or are a mix of both. From christian, "pagan" and shamanic traditions to composers and styles from the middle ages, renaissance, baroque...to more modern styles, either blues or rock, electronic or ambient, metal or ethno revival projects. In all of these it is hard for me to pin point what makes something cyclical and what makes it linear as I seem to find elements of both concepts in most things. Even Gamelan music kinda sounds to me like a mix of both with a very clear beginning and ending which mirror each other but also with many segments adding or substracting different elements. There might be a problem with the concepts themselves, at least for me, as a cycle is something which by definition has a beginning, a becoming and an ending and linear time is more how we describe and measure the succesion of historic cycles and events, and not really something absolute. But its way too late for this kind of thought, so I might be rambling a bit :)
In Bali, you can actually hear and FEEL the vibrations across the rice fields (if they still exist). The gong vibrations travel far and wide.
Bali kayak magnet. Saya bolak balik bali tidak pernah bosan

The Gamelan is the world's most peaceful orchestra. The instrumentals are so universal that the universities all over the world have an Gamelan Orchestra.
The ensemble's natures are inclusive and unique = it can accommodate a new beginner but at the same time it can provide a lifetime lesson for advanced learners! Its so unlike anything ive ever heard. For a jaded, bored and overworked suburbanite westener like me this feels like a spiritual experience. Where im from i feel like Spirituality and curiosity was long ago buried underneath the great Grey monuments to monotony. The concrete jungle and asphalt seas surrounding me are heavy.
Its something greater than me that has reached me somehow. I dont have to understand it, it probably existed way before me. It dint need me but it filled me with something i cant describe.
It make me feel like a ghost contemplating the dark pulsating silent eternity ahead. With the reassuring cacophony of a lifetime infinitude colliding to each other making infinites harmonies.

I had the opportunity to visit Indonesia in the early 90's and it changed my life - the art and the music and the dancing and the architecture and the whole otherworldly atmosphere of Bali and Java. I hear Gamelan music and it brings me back just like that. It's absolutely connected to the environment, spirit world and the people. It is so powerful. I just hear this music and it brings me out of any funk I may be in for it reminds me of something else, reminds me of who I am.

Bali and Java is my favourite parts in Indonesia, they still with the original culture, and I hope their never lose it.
Please never let this beautiful culture to be forgotten.
Gamelan bali : saat pagi, abis mandi
Gamelan sunda : saat sambil bekerj siang hari
Gamelan jawa : pelepas lelah setelah seharian
How on Earth can you hit the bars that fast
A few years of training
Iam can to
@@tonk9246 years? It took a few days
With nervous energy and muscles, hahaha you can do it!
The players are “paired.” With the instruments slightly de-tuned from each other, the “paired” players each play 1/2 of the melody. And yes, still “that fast” keeping it all together with rhythms interlocked tightly. 👍🏽👍🏽
Masyarakat Bali begitu ketat menjaga budayanya sendiri.. benar² membuat saya kagum tiada henti.
BALI 🙏🙏
Geinoh’s amazing OST for Akira got me into these kinds of sounds as a young kid (who watched inappropriate movies). I’m forever thankful for that exposure to such hypnotic sonic textures.
Always beeing in a search of diferrent musics, I must say, this is my favorite discovery for a very long time.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

I have heard this wonderful music before but never knew how it was called. Finally reunited with the magic of Gamelan.
Warm greetings to all from the Netherlands🇳🇱!
I am happy that many Indonesians still like traditional music👍, people who dislike are people who think traditional music is heretical and don't like traditional music.
I love the lower frequency that you can hear, as if everything, the floor, the trees, the walls, and everything are being affected by it. It feels very strong and austere, very wonderful!
I'm from South Africa and have never heard of this music. My AI playlist bot suggested it. Really beautiful by the way
Miris.
jir sedih amat kudu dibangga-in ga ada yang jelek kok budaya kita, cuma yg stereotipikal aja yg ngebosenin kek jawa atau islam. padahal kita punya sumatra, papua, bali, borneo sape au, sulawesi juga, dll.
Foreigner is here because this music is quite possibly the most spiritual, other worldly and simply most gorgeous I have ever heard. ❤❤❤
I'm here thank to Estampes from Debussy, and I couldn't not regret more. This is so exotic and wonderful, almost like contemporary music at some excent. Incredibly amazing.
True, you mean "Gambangan"? Which is one of Colin Mcphee's piece, Yeah there is one part that's similar to this song.
Very contemporary. I would say much better than some "atonal music". Not saying all atonal music is bad but they can be cringey sometimes.
Amazing music. It shows the genius of Indonesian people.
We must preserve these artistic traditions - they are the wealth that the Ancestors have bequeathed on the coming generations of Humanity 🙏
Om Swastiyastu 🙏🏼

Something about this makes me feel so peaceful. It feels so ethereal and otherwordly almost alien
The western world needs this kind of exposure....This nothing like we are used to
debussy loved gamalan and based many of his famous pieces on the scales used
@@rawhamburgerjoe that's why I'm here. I love Debussy
Metro Venues Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp of the band King Crimson were highly influenced by Gamelan in their trio of 80’s albums “Discipline”, “Beat”, and “Three of a Perfect Pair”
I missed these kinds💧
But its just major scale. The rhythm tho.. Is fantastic
Debussy brought me here. Simply astonishing. I am deeply fascinated by this unique rhythm and scale.
This is the most beautiful sound I've heard for ages! Sure beats traffic noise and angry, screaming people.

Spectacular gamelan beautifully filmed and recorded. When I checked the location, I wasn't surprised to find this wonderful group of musicians are from Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. For anyone visiting Bali, don't get trapped in the seaside resorts of Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua ... visit Ubud for at least one music & dance performance. Awesome experience guaranteed!!
..saya dari Pasuruan Jawa timur dan sy adlh Muslim..tpi sya bgitu senang dn cinta budaya gamelan Bali yg rancak dn menyatu....Love Bali..

Gamelan Bali banyak di lombok era ini
Wow!! As a musician who got my start in percussion (and will always love percussion the most), this is an auditory FEAST. I'd previously heard some gamelan/gamelan inspired music in Akira and from some modern western composers, but nothing beats the original. It is absolutely beautiful!!
Ive never heard anything like this before... Such groovy, rich and authentic sound !! Love from russia💚
Horosho Spasibo Rossi... 🎉🎉
Am I the only person...this brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it? So beautiful...so other-worldly...
And I finally figured out... I kept thinking...why I am hearing what sounds like an ORGAN playing in the background? It's actually the man in the far left, back corner, and the man in the far right, back corner, of this video. What they are playing...that is what gives that long, low tone, which sounds like an organ.
Also...as I get more 'into' this music, and have listened to and watched a number of live performances here on TH-cam, of gamelan music, thus far, this group of musicians seems (to me) to be the best...the most skilled. ;-) Just perfection!
As a Javanese
Balinese Gamelan, beach vibes
Sundanese Gamelan, cold highland field vibes
Javanese Gamelan, keraton and wedding vibes
nope, balinese gamelan gives me the 6th dimension intergalactic vibes, its kind of advanced space music
@@srikrsnahimself.7470 hey bro..,in country (java) there is some legend that says the first gamelan was made by a god

Thank you miss
Gua orang Jawa tapi kok suka dengerin gamelannya Bali yak.. 😂 kalo dengerin gending Jawa suka ngantuk
Aku suka gambelan jawa sm bali..
jawa bali 1 leluhur ☺
Beberapa jenis komposisi gamelan bali, beat, tempo kadang sesuai peruntukan.
