Banning Elvis is like banning Christmas. Elvis' deep spirituality is well known, as was his compassion and generosity. I have listened to his Christmas album for over sixty-years, every single year, and always will.
Elvis was a very religious and spiritual man who loved Christmas. Elvis meant no disrespect. Elvis sang it in his style, just like he did all his songs. I've always loved it.
For one, you didn't know Elvis personally -- you rely exclusively on the marketing. Second, the idea that he was "very religious and spiritual" is exaggerated hogwash. That is the SELL to those who otherwise objected to him because of his singing BLACK. Third, it isn't his singing per se that is praised by his fans: it his being overly-emotional.
Irving Berlin cashed every royalty check from Elvis for this song. The reason Berlin and the mainstream broadcast media didn’t like this version had nothing to do with the way Elvis sang it-it was because Elvis wasn’t a racist and did more to bridge the gap between Blacks and Whites in America than any other person in American history. A person like Elvis who was fostering cooperation and REAL harmony between the races was literally antithetical to the powers that be. Elvis donated millions to inner city youth programs, was a huge supporter of equal rights and REAL racial justice. He employed a lot of Black musicians and singers and discovered and promoted many new black artists. THAT is why they hated Elvis…
I WAS SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL BEE-CAUSE I LOOKED LIKE ROCK AND ROLL. THEY'RE ALL GONE, I'M STILL PLAYING R&R ELVIS PRESLEY. SAW HIM IN CONCERT ABOUT 74? !!JESUS!!
The song begins with ' White',the symbol of Neutrality with no biasness ! Besides, Elvis began his career as a Gospel singer. Hence, the song is a reflection of love for humanity as associated with Christmas, the festival of Peace,Joy,Love & Hope 🙏❤️❤️🌹Pray Elvis RIP & Merry Christmas to all ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🎉🎉🧑🎄🧑🎄
I'm a long time Elvis fan and I certainly learned something new thanks to this video. I would never have thought that his Christmas songs were banned in 1957 on radio because at that time it was mostly his moves on stage that caused much controversy. Thank you and I'm looking forward for more Elvis content if possible.
Elvis' christmas albums are the BEST. His version of 'White Christmas' is much preferred because it is uplifting and hopeful. Like EP, Christmas is my favorite season 🎄☃️✨💯⚡❤️
I thought Elvis's version of "White Christmas",when I first heard it blew the doors off of any version of the song I've ever heard! Thanks Wicked Acorn!
I loved him in 1956 and own everything he ever did. I am now 80, see the wonderful Documentary "Elvis Presley and the Black Community". You see I was 12 when I first saw Elvis, in the time segregation was so bad, White stations would not play black music. And when Elvis did, he was banned everywhere. He struggled with this but kept on being an advocate for black artist. Few know that Elvis propelled the careers of both James Brown, and Jackie Wilson. My parents didn't want me to watch him, they said he was demonic. Poor Elvis. I love him to this day for not only being the a wonderful entertainer, but so good and generous to others. Also see "Elvis Presley King of Kindness". thanks By the way, Elvis 3 gospel albums won him 3 grammies.
A friend’s father worked in the office where Berlin was published. He said a lot of Berlin’s songs were written by others. Up and coming and down and out songwriters would bring their songs in and would sell them to Berlin. He said White Christmas was one of them. A long time ago so who knows.
There is a video on TH-cam with Rosemary Clooney talking about the movie White Christmas and the fact that Irving Berlin was constantly on the set of the movie, having a meltdown on the way they were doing White Christmas! He must have been a fun guy to be around!😂 Elvis owns this song, like he does ALL OF THEM!
So if Irving Berlin hated Elvis' version of White Christmas and the whole Christmas Album why didn't he return all the royalties that Elvis' record gave him? I wish someone asked Irving Berlin that question.
He didn’t like or appreciate what Elvis brought to the table. Why would he have to relinquish his royalties? Leiber and Stoller hated Elvis’ version of “Hound Dog”. So they have to return their royalties to?
@@FrankieLovesElvis Irving Berlin should've given back the royalties just as Leiber and Stoller but they decided they would keep that and continue slating Elvis as a one off singer that's not very professional but that's what they did.
There is also a reason, why this song doesn't appear in song books. You have to buy the piano sheet music, also when you simply want lyrics and chords.
99% of people hearing White Christnas have no idea Irving Berlin wrote this in an understandingly depressed & mournful mood. While I sympathize with his loss & grief, there is no hint or lyric that would indicate to the hearer this was in any an expression of personal grief of loss. The song invokes melancholy memories of past idealistic Christmas days with the yards and houses covered in snow. For Berlin to become so offended that he would demand Elvis' redition to be banned because Elvis chose a favorable remembrance tone rather than a mournful one, is revealing. Thinking his song, "White Christmas," was interpreted wrong and given a different tone is one thing, but to attack by censorship and personal derision of Elvis is not only inappropriate, IT'S CHILDISH
I can't see Irving Berlin seeing the Elvis version as a sacrilege as Irving Berlin was Jewish. Regardless it's a beautiful song and now l want to hear the Elvis version. We live in amazing times because l am guessing the song is still out there where Irving and Elvis are gone. I would love to hear Christmas songs and history. Am subscribing.
Bing Crosby is the original but it's boring... Elvis owns this song....Best version....Also Elvis has the all time best selling Christmas album....Proof is in pudding....
Thanks. I’m in the UK. Been here going on 8 years. This channel is mostly about the history of this country. Mostly local history around Manchester. These quick little this day in history videos are promoting a concert I plan to do about the history of Christmas and Christmas songs. It will be the more traditional songs but there will be a few by the King no doubt.
Thanks Shirley. So far it looks like me and you and another guy. I guess people don't leave comments. Spread the word. Let's see if we can make this happen.
I can't imagine Irving Berlin banning White Christmas. Elvis" songs were influenced by the Black churches in Memphis. These churches sang the spiritual gospels and know about the feeling of what Christian Christmas, Irving Berlin was Jewish. and Hanukkah was his festive holiday , not Christmas as a sad song.
Irvin Berlin was crazy, why ban such a great classical Christmas song by the most famous singer the world has ever know very poor taste on Berlins part.
i've always see this as yeah, separated for the time being, but wishing for all the good things ... I guess I just have a much more upbeat listening experience than other people. Gatekeeping Christmas ... Oh well, it was the 50s.
Pretty interesting standards. The royalty fees are welcome, but we cannot tolerate some interpretations? They said about the city of Berlin in Germany, it may the right place for crazy people.
It's one of the best Versions in my opinion, but I might be biased as I'm a fan of The King. I never knew this so it's interesting. Hope you don't have a Blue Christmas. Cheers from the U.K.
The argument for banning is unconvincing anyway regarding the 'Christmas spirit' since even then it was fully commercialised and all about selling goods and and using Christmas to coin in massive profits.
So do we have to put in an order for snow to be turned onto another colour. When it snows of course it becomes a white Christmas. Whats wrong with that.
Well the radio stations play "Santa Baby" I am much older now it pretty much is a disrespectful song to have at Christmas because a woman in the song wants to have sex using the term 'the deed' that's disrespectful to me And wanting a White Christmas is what we all want!
Christmas is a Christian holiday. It's a holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ - a festive occasion for Christians. Anyone who wants to celebrate this holiday is welcome to do so. Elvis Presley was a Christian known for singing the Christian songs How Great Thou Art, In The Garden, Somebody Bigger Than You and I, Mansion over the Hilltop, Amazing Grace, Reach Out to Jesus, and many others. Bing Crosby's version of White Christmas with its bells and strings is a crooner's version - nothing "bluesy" about it. Irving Berlin and Bing Crosby collaborated closely on the song "White Christmas." Elvis Presley's version of White Christmas from 1957 borrows from the Drifter’s R&B version with a little more movement in it. From Elvis Presley's earliest years as a recording artist, he always gave credit to those who inspired him. It was Bing Crosby...Bing Crosby instigated Irving Berlin into trying to prevent Elvis Presley's version of White Christmas - the entire album - from being played on the radio in 1957.
Christmas is a Chris5ian holiday. Plenty of Pagans would argue that one with you. The feast westerners call Christmas was latched onto the Pagan Yule celebrations; hi-jacked by Christianity if you like! The Vikings are after your blood!
It’s definitely my favourite Christmas music. How ridiculous, Elvis’ version is beautiful. I’m sorry for Irving Berlin’s tragedy but it seems he went too far on this one.
It may surprise many what the INITIAL sales of Elvis' LPs from the 50s brought. Each of them went on to sell so much more after they left the charts. I was surprised for example, how Elvis' Golden Records did not do so well initially. His 2nd LP and Loving You were his best sellers at the time they were released. Now Elvis Christmas Album and Golden Records are the top sellers of this 50s LPs BY FAR. 1. Elvis Presley (1956) 300K (RCA's biggest selling LP at the time of release) 2. Elvis (1956) 500K 3. Loving You (1957) 350K 4. Elvis Christmas Album (1957) 200K 5. Elvis' Golden Records (1958) 150K 6. King Creole (1958) 250K 7. For LP Fans Only (1959) 200K 8. A Date With Elvis (1959) 175K 9. Elvis' Gold Records Volume 2 (1959) 100K It is obvious that a movie greatly boosted Elvis' record sales. And later in the 50s and early 60s, the biggest selling LPs were soundtracks to movies and/or Broadway plays. Even the King Creole LP sold fairly well. It was released a month or more AFTER one single and two 45 extended play albums with 10 of the eleven songs from the movie sold over 500,000 each! Some say his 1957 iteration of Christmas Album was his best seller. Not quite true. It is his CAMDEN Christmas album that got the diamond award, not the LOC-1035/LPM-LSP-1951 album. 1969 was the LAST year LSP-1951(e) 12 track Christmas Album was available. It was superseded by the 10 track Camden CAL-2428 in 1970. That version, has been retitled and rereleased with the same content and tracking order through the years. One example was called "It's Christmas Time". And it is the 10 track version with Mama Liked The Roses that earned the Diamond award. The 10 track version eliminated the 4 tracks originally released on the Peace In The Valley Extended Play 45. But those four religious songs DID reappear on the Camden album You'll Never Walk Alone.
I have Cliff Richard's Christmas album and it's pure rock, full of joy. Elvis' is mellow by comparison. I actually use Cliff's album for dancing :) After all Christmas should also be full of joy. Of course I love traditional Christmas music and listen to it when I relax with some candles and wine. I love also Christmas album of Belgian singer Helmut Lotti who was by the way Elvis impersonator in his youth and even performed with the Stamps. Here is a Christmas song Helmut wrote, music and lyrics. th-cam.com/video/BM-tv-mB35A/w-d-xo.html Merry Christmas

I don't agree with the flack that Elvis got over his rendition of White Christmas, but I'm also a huge fan of Bing's original versions. Fod that reason alone, I would have found myself on the pro-Bing side of the argument. Elvis is the King of Rock n Roll, but Bing's the King of Christmas

Surprised it’s not banned today!
I like some of Elvis' Christmas songs but White Christmas isn't one of them.
That song didn't just belong to Elvis , Bing Crosby
Make it different, R & E, Blues, Jazz, Norman Tabernacle Choir, and it's a new piece of art or music. Separate Copyright.
you bee icon is too similair to babaylon bee which is parody so you might be dismiessed as parody
Good point. I hadn't thought of that. It is the symbol of Manchester and we do a lot of Manchester history here. Something to think about.
WHO puts these misleading headlines on videos? You can't be sure I won't be watching your rubbish.
What was misleading about the headline?
@merlinames9197, it sounds like the song got banned nowadays, deliberately misleading and dishonest... are YOU the culprit?
@YTChiefCritic Well I knew about this story, so I knew they weren't talking about a recent incident. I don't think this guy did it on purpose.
Radio went away with VCRs
What’s the reason for canceling??? Is this a joke? Worst joke I’ve ever heard
