I was once the systems improvement coordinator for a large corporation. When looking at the manufacturing process we found that downtime was mostly attributed to one piece of equipment. When looking at that equipment I discovered that a majority of the problem was lack of preventative maintenance on one part of that equipment. User error was 3% of the downtime while the maintenance issue was 78%. Guess what management focused on? Ya the 3% caused by user error. To me this said everything about the way corporations think about their employees.

Reminds me of my short stint in CNC. A machine caught on fire and they blamed it half on me and half on the machine. It wasn't my fault at all. Poor maintenance on the machine was causing the coolant pumps to periodically clog/lose proper flow. I'd been there for 3 months at that point. I left shortly after when they didn't give me performance reviews/pay raises they promised. I'm very tired of being lied to by employers when I've treated them honestly and put my best foot forward. I'm a good employee because I can't stand being idle at work. I need something to do the entire time I'm there, so when my job is mainly making sure machines are running and making good parts it left me with a lot of downtime. I used that time to help others rework their parts, moved around material for the older guys who aren't as in good of physical shape, etc and I still got shafted.
I don't understand why employers are so hesitant to treat their employees *at least* decently. I'm not asking for a 40% pay increase, a reduction in hours with same pay, or any of that bs. I just want a fair wage compared with inflation and to have honesty from my employer. The lack of finding that in the economy has made me decide to study and then strike out on my own. I hope to someday be successful enough to be the employer to others that I always hoped to work for. To be quite honest, I'd even happily pay myself less than my employees in such a position if the work I was contributing to the company didn't match what I was paying myself.

It's a mentality extension of the old 'a good craftsman never blames his tools'. As an actual craftsman, good tools are mandatory. Bad tools will lead to a bad job, it's why every carpenter, painter, plasterer, etc I know uses one specific type of tool they like.

I find it interesting how easy it is to replace the battery in a car or truck which could cause catastrophic damage if used unsafely, or could literally catch on fire and explode if the battery is installed improperly, or how straightforward it is to replace the batteries in a fork lift which is capable of lifting literal tons of product high over people's heads and could crush people into a pulp without taking any damage, yet it's easy -even trivial, to replace the batteries in those things yet a skateboard is too dangerous to allow the user to replace the battery?? Hmm...

    • @bradhaines3142
      @bradhaines3142 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +210

its NOT trivial to replace forklift batteries, they usually weigh thousands and are actually most of the designed counterweight that makes it able to lift what it can. car batteries are usually easy, but getting even less easy. with VW and some others, you now have to program the battery to the car or it'll void the warranty.
also, theres only a right way and a wrong way to put them in, if you do it wrong it fries the computer and maybe a couple other things, not likely to cause fire.
but with anything that's your property, you should have the right to repair OR ruin it all you want, that's the whole point to this. even the idiots that shouldnt touch it should have to right to learn that they shouldnt. usually the hardest lessons are the most effective

And the individual cells do not weigh thousands, they are heavy, but you can still lift them on your own. And yes, some car manufacturers are now making it difficult to change the battery and like you said that's exactly part of the problem. Car batteries have always been easy to replace and there is no reason that that should change.
And the battery definitely could cause a fire if you short it out or puncture it while installing it. That would be kinda hard to do, but I've seen people do a lot of really stupid things in my life

I mean it's comparitively easy to change a battery in a car or a truck, but some modern cars are a massive pain in the ass as I've learned working at an auto parts store. I've also learned are so complex that they literally require a visit to the dealsership, whether it's because it has a computer to be programmed or because there's wires beyond the terminal wires that we aren't allowed to touch for liability reasons.

one might say "You're damaging a company's reputation by putting so much on them. Don't you think that's a problem?" Well, no. They likely have very well protected patent rights to such a device, and once you've reduced construction down to one literal wheel, there's almost no other way to build the product to bypass such patent restrictions. They have no competition.
Companies with little to no viable competition, in my opinion, ought to have yellow tape on them on the range and be ready to take all criticisms and backlash for mess ups. Customers have no where else to go if they want the same product.

I was %100 a victim of the nose dive failure. I thought it was exaggerated or occurring due to user error but I was wrong. My nose dive was caused by the opposite of a power loss. The built in safety feature to kill the board when an overvoltage event occurs is deadly! You can not feel the push back at all when you have enough of your body weight on the front that it keeps the nose down. I was lucky to get away with skinned arms , legs, and a busted helmet.
I was not intentionally ignoring the limits of the board. I happened to be on an extremely slight downward inclined street. I was not at or near %100 power and I was below the max speed of the board. At the very least it required a multitiered warning system to save the rider this pain.
I was saved by my helmet and Ive never been more grateful to have been wearing it at the time.

I bought it when it first came out. I absolutely loved riding it. I rode it everyday. It was like snowboarding on the roads. Great for desert living and no snow in sight. However, despite it's fun. It's basically a death trap with some serious issues. One being the way in which it forces you to fall. The placement of your front foot being forced to be sideways in order to activate the acceleration is a major problem because when it does nose dive. And it will. You are forced to hit the ground in a side falling motion that can cause some major damage. Now I had worn the typical protection gear for all of my rides but one. Except this one. I kept the helmet but got lazy and ditched the elbows and knees. On this ride I tried the extreme setting and boy let me tell you that was exhilarating. These things can move! But the biggest flaw aside from the horrible design in the falling. Is the battery! Now I had my phone strapped to my arm so I could monitor the battery life. But what I wasn't aware of is the fact that the monitoring system was not accurate to the actual life of the battery. I was just down the street from my house. I high tailed it back home with 25% battery life. More than enough for just down the street or so I thought. But coming around the corner and accelerating to 20 mph the battery died and seized the wheel locking it into a no spin full stop, the wheel skidded and I hit the pavement like I just got plowed by a semi-truck. Because of the design and forced placement of my feet. I had no time or way to roll out of the fall. I hit the pavement first with my hip, then my elbow. Both destroyed. I fractured my hip and broke my elbow. I have never felt such unbelievable pain. I was in shock. Luckily my neighbors saw the whole thing and called 911. I was in the middle of the road and bleeding out. I could have easily died if no one was there because I could barely move. It took me a couple of months of recovery. I tried finding info on this but there weren't many people talking about this back then. And the company had no mention of it. I read the book back to back and they did have something in there that didn't make them liable if there was a battery issue. But I do feel like this company should be held accountable for creating a very very unsafe board. I cringe every time I see people riding these things now.
However I have seen a guy that built a wheel system that attaches to the front of the board that makes it so if the nose does dive. Instead of coming to a full stop, you simply roll forward with the nose dive and can actually recover without falling. That should be implemented into the build because it absolutely works. I'm not surprised there's a recall. And I know a lot of people that will say oh well this was rider error. But it simply wasn't. It's a design flaw and lack of accountability. I had nothing to do with the wheel locking. And I did everything I could to monitor that battery life based off what the book suggested I do. My only error wasn't wearing proper protective gear. But honestly, it's not enough. After that, I did ride it again. But this time I purchased motorcycle to protect my entire top body and football hip protectors for the lower half. I looked absolutely ridiculous but I wasn't going to put myself out of work again after that one. I sold it shortly after because it was just too dangerous and I really had to much fear about the whole thing after that.

The fact that it doesnt freewheel when the battery dies (or in any failure state) is insane to me. That alone shouldve been good enough grounds for a lawsuit. At least if it freewheeled a skilled rider would probably be able to lean back and skid to a stop, but without that it just might as well be advertised as an ejection seat.

I once had my phone die on me when it was still at 15% battery.
The best theory for why I could come up with is that such a low percentage is perfectly fine for basic use, but that it cannot deliver peak power output anymore.
So if you went 20 mph (which I'm assuming is full speed?), I could imagine that the voltage dropped 0.1V too low, and some safety kicked in that said "I'm not getting sufficient power, so let's shut down" (or something like that).
Note to idiots: this is not me screaming user error, just connecting separate dots to hypothesize a potential causal mechanism
I hope you both make a full recovery, and wish you'd just gotten a scraped knee instead back then

I have had my pint x for around 1 and a half years now and have ridden it over 3000km. It’s important to note that sometimes pushback can go unnoticed specifically when riding on a hill or in any high torque situation. I think that adding this haptic buzz will help users notice the limit of there board better in these situations and is a really good idea to prevent injuries. Because the two times where I have gotten thrown off my board at 25km/h have been in those situations.

Only adding a preventative warning on such a dangerous and unacceptable flaw that is inherent in its design is pure negligence..
Nosedives are caused by a lack of necessary voltage required to keep the rider upright on the machine. If a rider decides to attempt to throttle at high speeds, the motor will lack the power to hold the board upright and literally shut down. This is unacceptable and could have been avoided with a more powerful motor and speed governor. But future motion decided to stick with the underpowered 750 watt motor, as it was cheaper and easier to market a motor that lies within the limit for street legal use..

I suspect this is a legal trick. By having a recall for something that is actually user error, they get to satisfy all the people who were demanding a recall WITHOUT accepting legal liability for any damage the product might have done.
When their customers who had issues find out there's a recall, most of them are just going to happily take their money back. SOME of them though, might feel they have been vindicated and could even try to sue... but if they do try, they'll find out that the recall was actually somewhat optional and there's actually no admission of defect... so this gets everyone off their backs WITHOUT having a class-action on their hands.

My take on this is that they know it has a ton of hardware problems, but hardware problems are expensive to fix. If they can recall the product for some user experience issue they can justify the fix being just a software update. Pushing a software update (assuming this device has an app/Bluetooth connection to receive it) is way cheaper than replacing every hardware unit ever sold. It all comes down to money in the end. Even if they have to receive all the units back to the factory and JTAG them with new software, still way cheaper than manufacturing all new hardware.
This isn't accountability, it's a farce. It's a way for them to say "look how much we care" while not having to spend the real money to fix the real problems.

Unlike a four-wheeled skateboard, the one wheel does not have any physical support underneath the riders front or back foot. Instead the singular pivot point is between each foot. I ride an ordinary kick scooter. I use it every day for errands, going to the grocery store, the bank, and restaurants. I love it. If I need to travel long distances, I fold up the scooter and slide it underneath the seats on the subway. Seven years ago I paid $180 for my Oxelo Town 9 and it's still going strong. When people see me, they think about gesturing a big fat "L" on their foreheads... OMG, it's so funny. Every once in a while people will ask me if my scooter is electric. I say, "no," and their eyes glaze over. The other day I bought groceries to make blueberry muffins. The grocery bags were hanging on my handlebars so I was scooting more slowly to avoid an accident. I then stopped at a red light to cross Broadway, the longest busiest street in Manhattan. When the light turned green, I started crossing on my kick scooter. This guy, on his Onewheel, without a helmet, ignored the red light in his direction. I pushed out slowly from behind a car knowing that I was difficult to see. I am cautious when I cross the street, mostly to avoid the e-bike delivery drivers that don't obey traffic laws. This guy on the Onewheel didn't see me and I didn't see him. I had about 1/10th of a second to react. Should I stop? Should I keep going? We both swerved. He was going full speed, like Louis said, about 20 mph, and again, without a helmet! We were so close to a major crash, I literally felt the air pass across my face. If we had crashed, we both would've been either hospitalized or dead. I blinked and he was gone. When I finally crossed the street, I had to get off of my scooter and stop for a rest because I was trembling so badly. In this instance, it doesn't matter who had the right of way. I don't care that he went through a red light. In the end, I was fine. He, however, was a speeding along at 20 mph without a helmet on a busy street filled with potholes and careless drivers. There is zero I can say or do to change his behavior. In an instant your life can change and we often don't have control over it.

As a former customer service rep there, the default answer on the wiring harness is that it is tampering from the customer, not from the manufacturer. They will offer a chance for the customer to pay to repair it and "educate" them on letting a dedicated service team open it (the one that only has one location) and will often refute the issues based off other damages inside or even damages outside. In these instances, since they "cannot verify it wasn't the customer" (and don't get me wrong, some customers do some very dumb things to their boards), then they will wait for the customer either pay to have the parts replaced or buy a new board all together.
EDIT: and if they are giving away $100 to buy a new Onewheel, they are hating this every step of the way. The company doesn't like discounts except for when they control them and any discounts are often seen as a compounding issue. If I give customer A the discount, then I have to give customer B-ZZZ the same discount. It "isn't fair to the company" to have these discounts out and about.

This recall isn't toothless, it's actually biting the plaintiffs instead of the offender!
And the argument is so beyond ridiculous, it's hard to believe in incompetence, there must be some corruption involved here! Just let that sink in:
    1. Being unable to fix it through a (OTA) software update is no reasonable excuse not to fix it! If they _really_ can't put new software on that chip, they should have to replace the whole chip (or even the whole control board and circuitry). I wonder if they'd still say they can't update the firmware on the chip under these conditions!
    2. Even IF the product was so fundamentally flawed, that it can not be brought into a safely operable state (Which they should be far too ashamed to admit in a partial recall, as it would mean that ALL of their products are fundamentally and irreparably unsafe), then they should have to refund the FULL purchase price (including shipping) AND pay in CASH! Handing out freaking _vouchers_ (like the people who experienced ghosting, shorts or battery fires would even WANT to purchase another Future Motion product! 🤦‍♂) that are anywhere from 5% all the way down to *2.5%* original price of the product is a slap to the face AND a kick in the guts! companies routinely hand out better vouchers than that during promotional campaigns! Which brings me to then final point:
    3. THEY'RE GONNA BE MAKING A TON OF NEW SALES FROM THAT SO-CALLED RECALL!!! (If the customers whose boards won't be fixed by the recall don't ignore, which on these terms they absolutely SHOULD!) Depending on how many of the recalled boards can not receive the software update and how many of those that can't receive it are sent in, they turn turn a STINKING BIG PROFIT from this "recall"!
Recalls are supposed to COST the manufacturer money, not make them a profit! The whole point of an obligatory recall is to force the manufacturer to repair manufacturing defects that they refuse(d) to repair because it would cost them too much money!

Louis, I enjoyed talking to you about onewheels at LTX and am glad you are making more content about them! Something that we are discovering, as the new firmware is being rolled out, is that it is bricking boards. Many GTs totally brick during the update, and FM has left the update live. They released it on a Friday and now are not supporting the many people who now have bricked boards simply because FM said it was safer. People in the onewheel discord are speculating that it is because of the bootloader. For the first time ever, future motion updated the onewheel bootloader. We speculate the reason they did this is to further remove our right to repair our boards. The previous bootloader let us change out firmware as we wanted. We needed to do this because the GT would brick itself if the battery was unplugged, and we would need to switch to older firmware that let us fix it. There are many layers to this issue and it is still evolving. Personally, I fear updating my GT because it might brick it, it takes away the ability to switch firmware, and who knows what other traps the new firmware has. I would love to know your thoughts on this.

I couldn't agree more, I have been riding onewheels for 4+ years at this point, and I have zero issues with the Safety features already built into the boards. Pushback is something you can't ignore, and the only times I have hurt myself on the board was due to my inexperience and ignoring the boards warnings. I can honestly say I haven't hurt myself in 3+ years, all of my injuries were caused in the first year due to my lack of experience and understanding of the boards mechanics. What I do take issue with is the build Quality. My XR is still going strong after 4 Years, but my GT broke on me in less than a year of ownership. This was due to a shorter than normal Motor cable, which pulled out whilst stopping and broke the pins in the motor connector. Luckily I was stopping so no injury, but that could have easily happened whilst going 20+ mph and I would have been hurt badly. After Lengthy talks with FM about getting the board in for repair, knowing exactly what was wrong, and asking for only that broken part to be shipped out to me I decided not to send the board back for repair. I live in the UK, and it would have cost more to ship back and get the repair than to buy another board. In the end, I looked to the VESC community to remove all Future Motion Parts from the board, Rewire the Battery Pack for a new BMS, and added some slack into all of the cables so this doesn't happen again. Now I have a working Board, which I would argue is safer than the stock boards provided from FM, due to all of the safety features the VESC community have added into the Firmware. I can now repair any broken part for around £300 and I never have to go through the headache of talking to FM again.

The going too fast issue has an easy fix. If you need x power for balance functionality you limit max speed to max-x. You DONT make that user optional because that isnt a preference that is a limitation of the design. At the most you allow that to be overriden through advanced controls with massive safety disclaimers. These guys are doing the like of selling a car where the brakes and steering dont work well past a certain speed and leaving the speed selection to that speed up to the driver. Ridiculous.

Sadly many of the issues with the Onewheel could be addressed with routine maintenance. This is a device that can handle all sorts of terrain, gets beat up and tossed around but unlike a mountain bike/ snowboard etc you can’t take it to your local to get checked out/ replace worn, broken or dodgy parts. I’m in Europe, my only option is to send in by boat to America to get fixed “properly” waiting months and costing me outrageous amounts OR I DIY or find someone that’s a electrical engineer and also knows what’s up. Your move future motion….
P.S there’s plenty of people here in Europe that GIVE AF and have the appropriate degrees so start supplying pars or don’t be surprised if we (Europe and and most likely everyone outside of the cont. US) go VESC/FW

thats what I was thinking. I aint a fan of automatic systems and safeties, especially those that potentially limit maximum performance, but this ones a no brainer. This is like selling a car with no rev limiter, except instead of throwing a rod through the block it throws you down the block.
