Fun fact, I'm just getting into the game. I was considering getting some stuff for quite a while, and then the Battleforces and the Codex became a thing. I was even a few days late to the party when I decided to pull the trigger. I went to 8 aussie sites, all but 1 had sold out... but bah gawd I got the veterans of the long war box and I'm looking forward to that arriving. I've been working on getting paints, tools and brushes for the past week. I have spent... a dumb amount of money but I'm so damn excited to start collecting.
@@NYJoshie I'm going with Iron Warriors. I love the colours, I love the lore, and multiple detachments can fit Iron Warriors without much issue, even though I know lore/paint doesn't really matter for gameplay.
@@OnyxANZ If you wanna build a lot of IW infantry, I personally find that the Horus Heresy Mk. III kits fit the vibe really well. MUCH cheaper than buying the legionaries for 40k, as well.
Dude dont feel bad about money spent, i got Leviathan box and though i got it for 26% off, once i got all the space marines and tyranids put together, bought a redemptor dreadnought for the marines, all while listening to 40K lore……i fell to chaos haha decided id rather run chaos but was already out all this money on blue berries. Then a week ago i walked into my local gaming shop who always runs 15%off Warhammer and there on the shelf sat ONE veterans of the long war. Took about 30 minutes to justify the purchase and couldn’t be happier. Got my demon lord, chosen and possessed assembled and getting ready to tear into the Legionaires. The shop has a Vashtorr for a hundo and GW jacked the price on him to 105 so im going to try and grab him tomorrow
Thanks for not listing the battleforces as what to get first despite them being so recent. Really rubs salt in the wound that around 75% of people who wanted one didn't get one.

I used the HH range to pad out my CSM army. With the Age of Darkness box I got bodies to work with, CSM terminators, Dred as a Hellbrute, both leaders can be a Chaos Lord and Executioner and the Spartan tank I'm using as a Ork Battlewagon. The CSM Killteam is a better Chosen box. The 2 boxes of Assault Marines with a box of Raptors can hammer out a lot of Warp Talons with the HH term Lighting Claw parts and Raptors obviously. The way to get a cheap Deamon Prince is just to grab Primarch Guilliman, same base and size but you gotta chaos him up. Any extras can go on the bodies to create whatever you need really.
Expanding on that, the killteam legionaries box gives you parts to make both a respectable master or executions (2 handed axe) _and_ a master of possession (the acolyte). The downside to the HH box is it can only make bolter csm when consensus is you want chainswords (although it does have chain bayonets on sprue, so that may be a route to marines that can be used as either). Also worth looking at the hh weapon packs (ideally splitting with someone) - it's probably the cheapest way to legit gw plastic lascannons for your legionaries (which are really useful and not on the legionary sprues) - a standard trick is 2x5 man teams with a lascannon (and probably plasma) in a rhino together to maximise use of the firing deck.
Great video. Just got a 3d printer and want to use it to print off some conversion pieces to turn CSM into a Night Lords force following the Kill Team.
I decided to start my CSM army when the Chaos Space Marines Boarding Patrol box was revealed, which featured Abaddon, 10 Legionaries, and 20 Cultists for a great price. That was the BEST WH40K starting box I’ve ever seen! Unfortunately, it took about 4 months for it to be released. In the meantime, I bought the 9e Combat Patrol, Balefleet battleforce, Wrath of the Soul Forge King, and Agastus boxes, which gave me a good variety of CSM units (and some new Space Marines units). I remember having difficulty finding a Master of Possession at the time but that’s not a problem anymore because it’s in new 10e CP box. The only problem with CSM is that their discount boxes tend to include Daemon Engines instead of vehicles, and the Helbrute isn’t great and the Heldrake is as bad as every other Flyer in 10e. The best dael was the Forgefiend/Maulerfiend in the Eldritch Omens box, which I split with an Aeldari player. I bought 2 Chaos Rhinos to help get my Chosen and Legionaries into combat. The Rhino is great because it has Transport 12 (like a Land Raider) and it’s cheaper (both $$ and points) than a Space Marines Impulsor. I also recently bought 2 Chaos Predator tanks. I wish CSM had some newer vehicles but at least theirs are cheap and fairly powerful for their points. The new CSM Battleforce boxes are good deals for players starting a CSM army, but I already own everything in the Veterans of the Long War box so I’m passing on that one. I bought the Dread Talons BF box because I’m starting a Night Lords army. I’m just waiting for the Jump Pack Chaos Lords and Night Lords Kill Team boxes to be released; 2 or 3 of those and I’ll have a 2000 points army. Hopefully GW will also release a Night Lords upgrades kit so I can customize my Chaos Terminators, Chosen, and Raptors squads.
Thanks so much for this. I've been going back and forth on whether to expand Sisters (I wasn't impressed with their new battleforce or combat patrol) or start Chaos (their new combat patrol "looks cool" but I know nothing of what the units do), so this is really useful and timely for me. We appreciate everything you do - you work extremely hard.
Regarding beginner lore, Arbitor Ian just released a great beginner-friendly intro video to Chaos Space Marines on youtube, highly recommended for getting into the faction! Title is "The NINE TRAITOR LEGIONS of the Chaos Space Marines | Warhammer 40,000 Lore"
friendly advice to people who aren't looking for a difficult time, paint your CSM black legion. sure gold trim painting is timely and metallics are horrible to paint but you can get a really nice black with some dry brushing and black is the easiest color to touch up when you make a mistake. also nuln oil is great for easily getting crisp meeting points where trim meets pad.
The army I've collected for years, but never bought a marine kit for since they have no Iron Warriors models. Just Demon Engines and tanks and cultist kitbashes and 3d prints.
If by some unlikely chance my LGS has one of the long war boxes left next week when I go pick up some pre-price increase boxes I'll take it as a sign from the dark gods and start a CSM army. They're not the first one I'd go for but solidly in the interested tier. But given how popular they have been there's probably no chance of that happening.
The Battleforces are the first and last CSM that I'm buying from GW and only because I'm getting a great discount on them. Everything else, I bought second-hand for 50% msrp
Don’t sleep on the Chaos Sorcerer in Terminator armor. His abilities give Advance and Charge for a unit, and on a 2+ you pick a unit within 12 inches of him. Until your next movement phase any attack going into that unit has an extra pip of AP on it. Good for Terminators in general, I’d consider him GREAT in the Alpha Legion specific detachment where you can give him Lone Operative.
I built an army with 6x5 legioners with bolters and a heavy in each. 3 units of spawns. a chaos terminator lord and a sorcerer. 1000p De spawns rush the board while the legionaries take objectives. it´t far from optimal but i have a likeness for vanilla armies. and i can expand it with terminators and possesed.
I got the Space Marine starter kit I'm not sure if that was the best idea but I'm interested in the chaos Marines what's the best route to get and what items do I need I have Dice and that's about it any help or suggestions would be appreciated
Can anyone tell me what traitor legions can be used in a standard Chaos space marine army? I heard that the TS and DG legions cant be used. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, just grab Heresy stuff for your CSM battleline and Raptors. It's more likely to be in stock. I have 2 Contemptors playing the part of helbrutes and a lot of the new Mkiii Tacticals for Legionaries and Mk6 Assault Marines for Raptors. Or rather, had. Moved to Battletech cause it's cheaper and the company that makes it actually does seem to care about its players.
30k's plastic kits may also be more cost-effective if not outright cheaper depending on the store; all squad boxes come with twice as many miniatures compared to 40k's offerings. The catch in this case though is 40k-legal weapon selection (Heresy also lacks plastic Despoilers insofar, only has Assault), since you may be forced to get an upgrade sprue to go beyond bolters. Regardless, MkIII is terrific for Iron Warriors.
@TheCoincidence Even with upgrade kits, it's still probably cheaper points per dollar. And supposedly plastic melee upgrade kits are in the next few months.
I am debating whether to choose CSM or WE. I like them both aesthetically. Although the eightbound seem a bit ugly to me, I love the berserkers and the Khorne theme of destroying everything. However, the CSMs have very cool minis but there are so many things that it is overwhelming. What opinions do you have? I don't know which one to opt for. I have a box of 10 berserkers, a super realistic 3D Angron and they gave me the CSM combat patroll, I could go for both, but I want to opt for one.
As someone who's in a similar boat (csm + dg) I decided it's best to just go for a middle ground. This might be easier w/ csm and dg than WE because of the melee focus; meanwhile, legionaire & plague marine armaments are *basically* the same armament-wise (plasma pistol w/ heavy melee, for example) Still, proxying one force for another will let you stretch your money out a lot further

He can take a heavy weapon which has the same stats as a fist. So, as there is only one heavy weapon in the kit just use the fist as a second hvw for the champ. Thats what i do in my group and Nobody cares
my Goodness! I have the veterans of the long war box unopened and am not sure whether to open it. I have 485 CSM points from the Chaos half of the Eldridge Omens box and Necromunda. It amounts to a Warpsmith, Forgefiend, 5 Chosen, & 20 Cultist. I've spend the last 3 days trying to build different 2k point lists and have figured out that I want about 5k worth of space marines in order to build whatever list I want. I can't see doing this for less than $2000 but I'd still need a case and at that point I am buying a 3d printer so I can make terrain. I can't decide whether to spend that much money.
