Comprehensive *STABILIZATION* comparison is available here: th-cam.com/video/fCvFtT5Zgcg/w-d-xo.html I have decided to *remove walking stabilisation samples* from this video. Sony A7 IV performed better in that test which was done at 20mm with Active mode on Sony and E-Stabilization on Panasonic. In subsequent testing, I have found out that Panasonic performs significantly better in walking tests from 24mm upwards. Whilst the samples in the video correctly showed the performance at 20mm, they were not representative of the overall walking stabilisation performance, which is why I have decided to remove the whole section about walking stabilization. The situation around the stabilisation is very nuanced and the conclusion may differ significantly based on the testing methodology, so I will make a separate stabilisation comparison next week. As always great video comparing both cameras covering the most important aspect of both cameras. Can you make a video showing the use of Sigma lenses and if possible one covering adapted canon EF lenses, especially for AF and IBIs?
No, it doesn't affect the focusing speed, it is just causing on-screen lag. AF lag has been fixed by a FW update, I have talked about that in my recent long-term review.
Hi, thanks for the in-depth video. Do you mean that the AF lag you show in the stills test for the S5ii is no longer present? I’m currently deciding between the A7IV and the S5iix and I’m concerned about the AF lag in stills that you show in the test. It may help sway my decision. Cheers.

@@TheHybridShooterok thanks! I’m gonna be selling my Lumix G9 to finally make the move to full frame. I was just waiting for them to put phase detect on their full frame cameras and now they have! Gonna place my preorder in soon.
I've seen some other videos that the Panasonic S5 ll auto focus is not the best in low light. This can be a issue with C-AF at weddings when they lower the light. When I was using my Olympus OMD E-M5 I used S-AF that was really good and stopped down a little at weddings. With my Olympus OMD E-M1ii the auto focus in C-AF is very good in low light with my Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 I only stop down to f4.
Not in my experience. AF works great in the low light. Scene at 4:21 is actually shot in very low light and boosted by exp. compensation. It doesn't have any issues even with dark subject and backlight in that scene, so it won't struggle in lower DR scenes.
@@TheHybridShooter Weddings are a lot different when they lower the lights. Think 9pm or 12am low light with just enough light too see someone dancing but not so you bump into them as if it was pitch black.
I understand, I have tested in a lot of difficult situations and I have never had any issues in the low light. Every system has some limitations, but this one is among the best in the low light.
Very helpful comparison. So good to see real competition. Im torn between the two cameras I'm due to upgrade at the end of the UK financial year. Catalyst browse is a feature I wish Panasonic had, I find it a useful feature to have. Ive got a feeling the new sony tilt/swivel screen will make another appearance on a future Sony release, just wish they'd do it before April.
Catalyst Browse is frankly impractical. A 20 minute clip takes more than an hour to stabilize, and then you can start editing it. I much prefer just better camera stabilization and panasonic practically is like a gimbal already.
@@markshirley01 I haven't found much difference from ILE stablization vs Catalyst Browse for short clips. I used to use Catalyst Browse, and then if I am putting multiple clips together, especially many short clips, the 1 by 1 nature of Catalyst Browse just became too tedious and I gave up. You can get a paid Catalyst version which can do all of them at once, but it costs like $16 a month. The good thing about Catalyst is also it converts from s-log3 to Rec 709 at the same time, too.
This is a nice review. One major thing to notice is that images between cameras are compared while they are taken with different lenses. The Sigma 24-70 DG DN 2.8 is noticably sharper than the Lumix S 24-105 f4 at all apertures. The images compared at 1:38 do not say anything about the aperture used (and I think that DC DN is a typo over there). If you use the same Sigma lens on L mount, you will see that the image quality of the S5 will improve. Nonetheless, I use my Lumix 24-105 f4 daily and I am really happy with the results. Contrast and lack of lens faults are more important than sharpness if you ask me. Furthermore, I prefer Panasonic's colour science over Sony's. If you want to have separate video controls on the Lumix S series, you have to get an S1.
24-105 is more than sufficiently sharp for 24 MP sensor in the center of the frame at F8. You are not going to get better resolution with Sigma in that kind of situation.
@@TheHybridShooter At f8, that is true. At wider apertures, I disagree. I do not own this particular Sigma lens, but I have tested this lens on a Leica SL2. The Sigma gives sharper pictures at f4 than the 24-105. I also compared the 24-105 f4 and the Lumix 50mm S Pro 1.4, and compared them head to head on my Lumix S1. At f4, the 50mm prime easily wins on sharpness when compared to the 24-105 set to 50mm. Even on f/1.4, the 50mm beats the 24-105 with ease, also in the corners! I was blown away by the image quality of the S Pro 50mm 1.4. It performs the same as the Leica Summilux-SL 50mm 1.4, which I could hardly believe until I tested it myself... Still, sharpness is not the main thing in photography of course, and depending on what the images are used for, it doesn't make any difference. The 24-105 is indeed sharp enough in most cases.
That test is done at F8, all side-by-side images in this video as well, so we can agree that it is all right. I haven't tested the 24-105 comprehensively yet, so I can't comment on that. I have only checked that it provides maximal sharpness at F8 in the center for the purpose of that test.
Awesome Video! I Can you check if the S5II HDMI-out desqueezes your image straight out of the camera on anamorphic mode without the help of an external monitor’s desqueeze function like the ninja v?
Great review and comparison of both. I really appreciate it. I wish Panasonic had more native lenses (I don't consider L-Alliance Sigma and Leica to be true natives), if it did, I would have gone with Panasonic straight away.
why would you not consider Sigma and Leica lenses as NATIVE? they are the very definition of this... do you not consider all micro 4/3 lenses to be native lenses for that system as well?
S5IIX will be better choice for video than A7IV. Unless Sony introduces open gate 3:2 in firmware update. I wonder if there will be eye-AF for video in open gate 3:2 in S5IIX, which seems to be missing in S5II.
Thank you for this.. I am torn between the 2 cameras.. Do you know if the new autofocus works in the Panasonic while in the 4K60 FPS mode? And does it also record audio in this mode? Awesome job.. Cheers..

Also, there’s no romance or sexual connection with them. A platonic soulmate is one you feel the most connected and intimate with over any other friends or family." Maybe it will be so forever?
I would also like to see a video shooting duration test of at least 40 minutes in 4k 4:2:2 between S5Mark2 - Sony A7IV. Is it true that the Sony shuts down after 10 minutes due to overheating?
Something you lacked to mention is that the Panasonic S 5 II allows to use LUTs in camera - wich none other camera offers so far. Otherwise the best comparison so far 😊 I will stick with my A 7 III and hope for an update Panasonic G9 II
Hoping this also pushes Sony to add more features to their lower end cameras. The S5ii has pixel shift, focus bracketing, better video IS, shutter angle, anamorphic desqueeze, open gate. You can't get these in the A7iv and only the first two in the A7Rv. The ergos and menus are also better in Panny cameras. There is a lot more choice in the Sony ecosystem but they also beat everyone.
This is potentially game changing. The amount of features panasonic has included to their mid range full frame cameras far surpasses sony and canon. If they don't follow suit they WILL lose customers. Well done panasonic 👏🏼
@@TheHybridShooter No worries. I am not sure if you shoot professionally but, its not obsolete at all my friend. May be in the youtube world it is but not for many professional applications. Thanks anyway.
In that sense, you are right, it is still used a lot, but I think that it is a bad and "lazy" practice and I hope that the viewers will stop accepting 1080p as soon as possible, so I have no intention to promote the use of 1080p footage in any way.
Can you do me a favor, even if you don't make a video on this? Can you test the detail difference between 6K 10bit 4:2:0 vs 4K 10bit 4:2:2 and tell me what holds better? My theory that I believe is true, and have tested on my GH5 with 1080p is that the 4:2:2 is better at holding detail then higher resolutions do. But I have not hear anyone making this claim online and figure you might be interested in testing that yourself.
Do you feel that there is a realistic possibility that Panasonic will release a fullframe stacked 33+ sensor in another camera this year? I know that the X version of S5ii will be coming out in May, but that is still the same sensor as the s5ii. A fullframe stacked sensor camera from Panasonic with some more tweaking on the autofocus would then really give Sony a run for their money. We could all sit back in the grandstand seats (box seats) and cheer for our favorite camera as it came out of the gates running. Who knows, it might force Sony to get more serious about the next version of a Sony a7iv? Right? 😎😎
Thanks for your great video! If Panasonic had released all of the features in the S5II in the first generation, I probably would not have gone to the Sony A7IV/A7sIII. They are both very nice though. Given the GH6 is a great camera as well, the Panasonic ecosystem is a little more friendly to video imho. A Panasonic trio of the S1H/S5 & GH6 is a great kit for hybrid shooting with a slant towards video.
My pleasure! In this alternate history scenario, Sony would have probably released next-gen technology one generation earlier as well :) S5 II X will mostly make the S1H obsolete, GH6 output is unfortunately sub-par by today's standards, so the S5 II X should be the only one that you need.

very useful video as always, I own a Sony a74 and I'm seriously thinking about switching to the panasonic s5 Mark 2, but first I wanted to ask you how does the slow motion autofocus at 120fps work? since it still uses the old autofocus, and as body weight you say you feel this difference in weight compared to the a74? Thank you
I don’t shoot 1080p video at all, so I unfortunately can’t tell you that. The weight difference is somewhat noticeable, but not very significant.
@@TheHybridShooter I understand, thanks for the reply
Can you test S5II autofocus with 3rd party lenses?
Not at the moment, but I will try to do so in the future.
As always great video comparing both cameras covering the most important aspect of both cameras. Can you make a video showing the use of Sigma lenses and if possible one covering adapted canon EF lenses, especially for AF and IBIs?
Thank you! I will try to do that in the near future.
good 18min review of the S5 mk Ii / Sony a7Iv,
Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed comparison! S5 ii Kit and a7 iii Kit are about same price - which one would you recommend for stills ?
You're welcome! That is what this video is about, so I can't tell much beyond what you heard in the video.
Has Panasonic touch focus tracking in video mode as Sony? Thanks.
Yes, sure.
Love lumix
I'm a core photographer but sometimes do videography!! For photography purposes can you pls suggest which one I should pick up?? Pls help
Is the Tamron 28-75 G2 compatible with the A7IV's focus breathing compensation feature?
No, that only works with Sony lenses at the moment. You don't really need it with that one though.
5:10 slower focus can be caused by using Panasonic with HDMI output at the same time in Photo mode
Cheers.
@@jongaruman3753 Correct, there is no lag anymore.
The video I was looking for as soon as I heard that S5 II is out.
Hi, in many comparisons I watched the S5ii video looked softer especially for close up and people. Although i like the price of S5ii, the soft image is stopping me from considering the camera because i like my videos to be details. What do you think?
Wait, is the 24MP sensor in the S5 II a backside illuminated sensor? I thought it was just a basic CMOS sensor
It is BSI
@@TheHybridShooterok thanks! I’m gonna be selling my Lumix G9 to finally make the move to full frame. I was just waiting for them to put phase detect on their full frame cameras and now they have! Gonna place my preorder in soon.
Great video, my friend, and fantastic camera. The S 5 II is my new favorite. Best regards, Kai the bee filmer from Kiel 😍
Thank you! It really is good.
@@TheHybridShooter thank You. My previous favorite was the Sony A 7 IV. But this has changed. ☺
Thanks for this great comparison! Would love to see autofocus tests with the Sigma L mount lenses.
Outstanding COMPARISON BRO. THNKS.
Huge thumbs up for Krtek AF test
Very helpful comparison. So good to see real competition.
Im torn between the two cameras I'm due to upgrade at the end of the UK financial year.
Catalyst browse is a feature I wish Panasonic had, I find it a useful feature to have.
Ive got a feeling the new sony tilt/swivel screen will make another appearance on a future Sony release, just wish they'd do it before April.
Thank you! It sure is great for the consumers.
Catalyst Browse is frankly impractical. A 20 minute clip takes more than an hour to stabilize, and then you can start editing it. I much prefer just better camera stabilization and panasonic practically is like a gimbal already.
@@CO8848_2 I only use it for 5 - 10 second
@Pat's Production Hacks yes definitely - seems a great camera from so many angles
Are the comparison pictures of a7IV and S5II jpeg out of cam?
Or are they developed raw files?
Mostly developed RAWs with no / little adjustments.
@@m-stat9 Yes, it is. Especially when you want just one lens, the Sigma 24-70 is a very good one.
That was very in depth comparison. Thank you!
Awesome Video! I Can you check if the S5II HDMI-out desqueezes your image straight out of the camera on anamorphic mode without the help of an external monitor’s desqueeze function like the ninja v?
S5ii has internal anamorphic mode
@@granth1332 not my question
@@aram.v answer is yes to your question
@@granth1332 Thanks! I asked Richard Wong and he said that you can, but through Panasonics Webcam Software only.
Can use samyang lens for lumix?
Only on Sony at the moment, but Samyang L-mount lenses will be available later on.
Thank you for this comparison! :D
Great Video Hybrid Shooter! I hope Panasonic releases the S1(R/H) successor with PDAF soon.
Great review and comparison of both. I really appreciate it. I wish Panasonic had more native lenses (I don't consider L-Alliance Sigma and Leica to be true natives), if it did, I would have gone with Panasonic straight away.
Thank you! Sigma and Leica L-Mount lenses definitely are native, by the definition. What you probably mean are 1st party Panasonic lenses.
they got the 24mm 35mm 50mm 85mm lumix f1.8!
why would you not consider Sigma and Leica lenses as NATIVE? they are the very definition of this... do you not consider all micro 4/3 lenses to be native lenses for that system as well?
First of all, very informative video. Secondly, I wonder if the bird autofocus will work on my Baby Yoda, since it works well on Krtek. 😂
Which is better in low light for stills and which is better in low light for video?
Would be interesting to know who design and who makes the Panasonic sensor. Is it a Sony sensor?
what is all intra video? I can't pick out what he's saying there
You can simply google it.
great video, Panasonic S5 II is really tempting, can Panasonic S5 II do 4K 30p 4:2:2 ?
Yes
@@TheHybridShooter awesome, thanks
S5IIX will be better choice for video than A7IV. Unless Sony introduces open gate 3:2 in firmware update. I wonder if there will be eye-AF for video in open gate 3:2 in S5IIX, which seems to be missing in S5II.
Thank you for this.. I am torn between the 2 cameras.. Do you know if the new autofocus works in the Panasonic while in the 4K60 FPS mode? And does it also record audio in this mode? Awesome job.. Cheers..
Thank you! Yes and yes.
@@TheHybridShooter I have been trying to get the answer to this for days.. Thank you so much !!!

Im using my s5II for photography aswell with the light NATIVE LUMIX 85mm 1.8 only 300grams
Very helpful video. I bet the S5 mark ii is going to get a lot of new TH-camrs on Panasonic
Thank you! It should be quite successful product.
My platonic soulmate is still my a7iii! "A platonic soulmate is a friend who relates with you deeply and your bond with this person surpasses all other bonds in the world. Also, there’s no romance or sexual connection with them. A platonic soulmate is one you feel the most connected and intimate with over any other friends or family." Maybe it will be so forever?
For wildlife, bird and macro videography, using the new Sigma 60-600mm, would you go with the Panasonic Lumix S5II or Sony A7IV? Thanks!
Great review as always. Another advantage of the Lumix is the possibility that different LUTs can be baked into photo and video internally.
I would also like to see a video shooting duration test of at least 40 minutes in 4k 4:2:2 between S5Mark2 - Sony A7IV. Is it true that the Sony shuts down after 10 minutes due to overheating?
how was the kit lens on New body?
Very versatile, and optically more than good enough for intended purposes.
@@TheHybridShooter thank you for a quick response as always. i am hoping to see some smaller f2.8 primes from tamron and samyang for L mount
panasonic is really stepping their game! I hope hat they fix a little laggy af in photo mode otherwise I think panaosnic is truly a superb camera
Terrific overview. Thank you.
My pleasure!
crazy nice video! thanks man !
Thank you!
I have herd the s5ii update has 96x megapixel.. Can someone confirm this
It has had 96 MP pixel shift mode since the release.
One of the best! Well done!
I am curious to see your photo autofocus test with sigma lens on S5ii
Is the Panasonic sensor BSI?
Yes
Both Camera's alongside the Panasonic S5 Mark 2 X are on my list
Great video, Thanks. So both are equally good and either option would be good in most scenarios
Thank you! Yes, but they have quite different set of advantages, so I wouldn't say that it is "can't go wrong with either" type of situation.
This is potentially game changing. The amount of features panasonic has included to their mid range full frame cameras far surpasses sony and canon. If they don't follow suit they WILL lose customers. Well done panasonic 👏🏼
Which do you think is best for vlogging ?!
Panasonic 16-35mm F4 is IMO the best vlogging lens, so if you can get that one, maybe the S5 II could be a slightly better choice.
Thank you
Can anyone please confirm that there's weird autofocus hunting in occasional almost static scenarios. I sa that bug in some test on TH-cam
I definitely can’t.
Nice video. Have you tried the autofocus in 1080 50p? Many users have complained that the autofocus switches to DFD in 1080 50p.
Thank you! No I haven't shot 1080p video in many years.
@@TheHybridShooter Would you be able to do a test though?
I don’t intend to test any features related to 1080p video. It is an obsolete standard IMO.
6K is definitely more detailed.
i need a new system as mine is well out of date, these two are the ones iv came down to
Do you feel that there is a realistic possibility that Panasonic will release a fullframe stacked 33+ sensor in another camera this year? I know that the X version of S5ii will be coming out in May, but that is still the same sensor as the s5ii. A fullframe stacked sensor camera from Panasonic with some more tweaking on the autofocus would then really give Sony a run for their money. We could all sit back in the grandstand seats (box seats) and cheer for our favorite camera as it came out of the gates running. Who knows, it might force Sony to get more serious about the next version of a Sony a7iv? Right? 😎😎
I have no idea. Sony already sells stacked sensors to Nikon, so it is not impossible, but relatively unlikely.
*_Thank you for your upload, good test_* 👍637 🤜🤛
Hi man. I'm searching for a compact mirrorless camera. I like the fuji color profile like x100v but looking for a cheaper options. thank you.
In this alternate history scenario, Sony would have probably released next-gen technology one generation earlier as well :)
S5 II X will mostly make the S1H obsolete, GH6 output is unfortunately sub-par by today's standards, so the S5 II X should be the only one that you need.
@@TheHybridShooter You are correct. Thanks again and best of luck going forward!
Panasonic look very interesting ! My experience with sony a74 with f/1.4 I usualy have 1 not perfect focus on 40/50 shots (walking person, not running :P ) so for me is amazing. After your video if I will be more focus on video I think panasonic will be amazing , for all-purpose work sony is very good (not amazing, for example 4/50-60 crop... why?... :( , or evf etc. ), but price of a7r5 is ... expensive. Thank you for very good comparison video, I really like watching your content !
