I found that the best way to remove the ring is to cut it off with a Drimel tool.

      Hi Bill
Thank you for watching my video I agree that using a drimel tool would do the job but on this particular occasion I haven’t got one as I really have the need for such a small cutting tool so opted for chisel which does do the same job
      Thanks

About to get into this job but first im gonna try a dremel with a slim carbide burr to make a cut on the collar but if that wont work im breaking out the chisel and hopefully wont smack up my alloy wheels. Initially i just wanted to weld stuff to it but this made me reconsider, those extractor sockets seem to work great, thanks for putting this vid up

1 - Disconnect negative earth lead.

3 - Remove lock wheel nut.

michael millington hi there thank you for the lovely comments ...the extractor socket you use needs to be slightly bigger than the nut / bolt you are trying extract don’t forget to turn the socket anti clockwise Because as you turn the socket it will bite into the locking nut /bolt don’t forget before you use the extractor you need to get the spinning ring of !!! ACTUALLY, joking apart,
After paying attention to your production I went into my workshop where my Vauxhaul Insignia is waiting to have its wheels removed. I lost the wheel nut security key.
After carefully splitting the collar as per your guidance I then proceeded to locate an appropriate socket.
You'd think motor engineer of 100 years experience would have a 23mm, bi-hexagonal socket ! It took some finding and after bashing 7 shades of crap out of it to get it chewing into the nut I removed it quite easily. I thought the size might be helpful to your viewers. High 5s.

Thanks for the advice. I had to modify the process slightly as in didn't have and suitable sized cold chisels. However I did have a dremel with a cutting disk. I carefully cut across the ring with the dremell/cutter. Be very careful not to touch the alloy wheel. In my case I could easily see the edge of the ring and the start of the wheel. I had position the wheel so this particular stud was at the top. Take your time. I was able to get the ring perhaps 95% cut through. I then prised a screwdriver between the ring and and the centre finally breaking the ring. A bit more prising and the ring comes off. Thanks again for the original idea. Hope this may help

    • @richardshomemechanics5566
      @richardshomemechanics5566  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sacha
Ok you have done the hard part and that is getting the spinning ring off ..what happens when you now try to undo the bolt now is as you turn the breaker bar anti clockwise ( left ) the socket should now start bitting into the nut / bolt because it’s a left hand design as you undo it’s actually bitting more and more into the nut./ bolt that you want to undo .. you want the extractor socket to be not a tight fit so as you undo it can then start working it’s way down the nut / bolt this should be good enough to loosen it .. apart from the tyre shop cranking the bolts up way to tight with the air gun making it difficult to budge .. you must use a good quality bolt grip set as cheap ones just don’t do the job ..I can recommend a set called Irwin bolt grip they came from machine mart and are not that expensive.. these should sort this stubborn bolt / nut they have never let me down hope all goes ok ..last resort is to weld a bolt to the nut/ bolt and then use that bolt to undo the stubborn bolt/ nut but this can damage your alloys wheels hope all goes well
      Regards
      Richard

Personally I would buy the Irwin kit as it comes with 5 different bolt grip sockets one socket will fit more than one bolt/nut size ..don’t forget to tap the bolt grip into the bolt/ nut your trying to undo so it can start biting as soon as you start to undo ..

@@francoisloriot2674 The collars are easy to break off with a cold chisel, but 3 hours? Life's too short to waste doing that method!!!

@@mrlister2000 there was not enough space for a big chisel since the holes are recessed in the wheel. I've tried with a small one but it slips. and i have broken 2 punches on it. and for the time spent I had not choice to do it myself since 3 shops I went too said they will use a torch that will for sure damage the alloy wheels.

@@francoisloriot2674 you can use a 4mm drill bit to drill between the collar and the body of the locking nut. This helps to break them
