Enjoyed your frank, thoughtful comments about Mexico City! One of the many things I love about CDMX is its eclectic architecture and the shabby/grandiose neighborhoods like Condesa, Hipodromo and the Romas. Also, I love that sooo many residents have dogs and that there are numerous pet-friendly restaurants, coffee shops, etc. [This can sometimes be a problem: see comment below in parentheses.] Of course, one thing you always have to consider is the city's air quality which, although improved from the past, is still pretty bad. (Sometimes the problem isn't even human-caused: the air around Parque Mexico almost always smells of dog poop because of people walking their animals there. and not cleaning-up the mess.) Overall, it is a miracle of a city!

I was born in Mexico City and traveled back and forth for 30 years. I totally agree with your list. I will always love my birth country and will continue my to visits, however I can’t live with out the standard customer service we regularly receive from the service providers you mentioned. I don’t have the patience.
Also, banking, getting a lawyer, evicting a tenant, suing someone who wronged you, justice from the courts if someone violates the law against you, getting credit, getting a public notary, filing taxes each year, are all more difficult and complicated than what we are used to.
These are not reasons other people shouldn’t live there, but you should be aware.

@@laura-bronner Sweet! I have tons of questions, but for now I'm trying to talk myself into believing I made the right choice. I've taken the job in the DF, by the way. The only reason for my skepticism is that I have talked with some people who don't like the city. Talked to others who absolutely love it! I'm a 49-year-old guy, taking a job as a librarian at a really good American school in the DF. I have never lived in a big city (currently live in relatively small Minneapolis) but have traveled to a bunch of very large international cities and have always dreamed of it. Plus, I have some Spanish language ability and cannot wait to improve it! Taking the dive. Feeling good about my decision but let me tell you, I DO NOT want to hear from one more person telling me they don't like the DF!

I also make a tiny bit from this TH-cam channel. If you want to move abroad, I recommend checking out countries where you can get a working holiday visa (if you're from the US and under 31 you can go to New Zealand and Australia for a year each and work there! It's amazing!). You can also teach English online. It depends on what sort of work you like to do!

Never been to Mexico City, but husband and I are thinking of going back to MX perhaps for longer term.
Merida was our first visit just recently and we LOVED it enough to strongly consider relocation there or elsewhere in Yucatan state. We met a tour guide based in Merida who said he moved FROM MX City, citing his safety concerns for his family. Then I met a visitor who said he is sold on relocating to Mexico City and said it seemed safer to him than Seattle. As you say, subjective opinion based on experience.
Also, I'm curious if you have ever been to Merida and your thoughts on it? If you've covered this subject elsewhere, kindly reply with a link.
      Peace.

I like your video! I'm working as an online English teacher in Bali and will be moving to CDMX in October. I joined various Facebook pages and forums only to get snippy answers such as "come and see." People don't realize how important my questions are. I could possibly lose students if my connection is laggy and slow.
As an online English teacher, the quality of internet is extremely important. Are there certain internet providers to avoid? Is Telmex the best? I will need a stable connection (fiber optic) with minimum speeds of 15 mpbs download and 10 mpbs upload. My students are in China and South Korea.
Is Mexico City the type of place where there are frequent power outages? I'm guessing this might happen in the outlying areas. Is it possible to buy a portable modem to have as backup? Thank you so much! :)

    • @laura-bronner
      @laura-bronner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hi, well it depends, if you are in a good neighborhood you can happily ride some blocks to visit somebody or whatever, but to cross the city form north to south is a bit dangerous since there is always heavy traffic and there are not much wide avenues to move in an easy way; in that case USE the public transport (crowded in rush hours but it´s the best option), for leisure time there are several spots in the city to rent a bicycle called "Ecobici", somebody else can explain to you how it works because I have not used them yet, I think you buy like a card pass to rent them; hope this helped.

You forgot the horrible Mexican banks and their passive aggressive carelessness, the culture of queuing for anything anytime, the unavoidability of having to physically go anywhere to get anything done... I so agree with you when you say the people are so laid back it's sometimes quite upsetting, several times I've found myself missing work to wait on a gas technician who eventually cancelled on me an hour AFTER the agreed appointment time and said "I can come tomorrow its easier"... I love this place so much, I chose to live here and swapped a comfortable life in London for an adventure here, but clearly there's a lot of work to bring Mexico to the best standards!!! By the way, coffee here is so good 😍

Your dislike comments are interesting. Have you paid close attention to the trash man? They sort all paper and plastics on the spot before loading them onto the trucks 7 days a week. It's a side hustle for them. I'm sorry, the noises of vendors and services are what makes CDMX one of the most dynamic cities in the world.
    Cheers,

Me personally or is a person able to? It depends on where you’re from and what your home country’s rules are - most people are able to but permanent residency allows you to come and go as you please so in my opinion citizenship isn’t really necessary 🤷‍♀️

It depends on where you plan to live and what sort of lifestyle you want to have. My boyfriend live on roughly that much a month in the suburbs of the city (Lomas Verdes area), but it's just the two of us. That being said - we eat out a lot, we are a bit extravagant at the grocery store and we like to go to bars probably twice a week. We don't have a car, which saves us a lot, but we do use Uber a lot.

I know you are foreginer, so here's a little tip to you when you go out in Mexico city:
The insecurity has increased the last years, we are under a corrupt regime that doesn't care the country, actually you should get invloved in the Presidential elections in july this year 2018, AMLO is the one candidate that can change all this, get informed please.
I hope to you don't be victim of insecuriy and delinquency; when you go out try to not dress like everybody watching you, becasue the bad guys are going to note it, and don´t take too much money with you when you go to store or even job, only the necesary I would say, well I mean if you want to feel safe in streets ok? haha well that would be all, take care and tell everyone to vote for AMLO!!!! that's the definitive change!!! and the last opportunity of Mexico!
