  • Another episode of ITV's short-lived Goals of the Day show from on this day in 1989, featuring the goals scored in the First Division that day. Includes a rare sighting of a yellow Manchester City strip at Arsenal, a goal for Southampton teenager Alan Shearer against QPR and Paul Gascoigne showing what he was capable of for Tottenham away to Charlton.

Fun/useless fact. That bizarre all-yellow Man City kit was only ever worn for that one Arsenal game, and no replicas were ever sold to the public. Not sure if it was an “emergency” kit, given that City’s normal maroon away kit of the day would have clashed with Arsenals’s, but I can’t see why they didn’t wear their normal home kit. One of life’s mysteries I guess.

Very strange. You’re right it’s the only time they ever wore it. Similar to Chelsea in the 80’s. They wore a red shirt on 1 occasion at Goodison park.

I was at Old Trafford for that game against Sheffield Wednesday . I’d forgotten all about it. We were dreadful at times that season. No wonder we were in danger of getting relegated at one point.

I was too, I thought it was 0-0 but had very vague memories of it.

We knew a lad who worked the bar in K stand and he had us all on free beer.Think we watched about 10 minutes of the game and spent the rest of the game drinking.

Rumour has it that Martin Tyler commentated on the 1882 FA CUP final.

For those that moan about Sky’s football coverage - have a look at the mess that is ITV’s appalling coverage of game during this period. Elton Welsby was utterly awful. The Timmy Mallett of football presenting. A man incapable of hiding his bias. No wonder they barely let ITV near football these days. Dire!

I bet grobelaar got a few extra quid in the bank for that " catch" what a laughing stock, that is really obvious & just greedy.

What a joke of a show . Totally rushed and didn’t even show some of penalty incidents. Elton welsbys rather smarmy this week too far too pro Liverpool . Why they didn’t show a proper highlights show I don’t know

The irony is that he supports Everton. He was always a little smarmy. I loved watching all the goals as a kid but I see what you mean about it being rushed.
