I got my first Buffet album while living in P’cola in late 70’s. Jimmy was close by. I got a 30’ sailboat and learned to dive. I was starting to live his dream. I took two year job in Nassau. I shipped a VW bus to Nassau. Both the boat and bus were loaded with Buffet and blasted Buffet every chance I got. It doesn’t get better than that, so I thought. One long weekend I returned to Miami, rented a car and drove to Key West. I stopped along the way at Walmart in Marathon and got some new Buffet tunes. I checked into the Pier House in Key West. While taking my bag to my room and heard some familiar music. I deposited my bag and left the room and heard that music again. The music was coming from above. I suddenly realized that was a new song that I had just purchased. There was a flight of stairs. I went up and there was my favorite pirate making a video of One Particular Harbour. Life doesn’t get much better. There just happened to be a couple of chairs taken by yours truly, me. That night I had dinner at the Pier House under the stars. Barefoot Jimmy was at the head of the table next to me. Jimmy will always be with me! Thank you Jimmy and God bless you. I hope to see you again!
What a lovely song. It's the first time I've ever heard it at 45 years old. TH-cam wanted me to hear it 2 years ago and I refused. Dave M. and their tribute started me on this new road. And trust me, it's a lovely new musical road.
This is my mans song always has been. Johnny Depp was also 40 when he started the pirates movies. 1974, the year I graduated...to many links to not see them, life has been good
I wore out this tape in my youth. Now I’m 59 and your music was a continuous soundtrack in my life. Thank you for the awesome ride, Jimmy. Rest in Peace but don’t rest too much. 😊
RIP Jimmy. I've loved your music for over 50 years and will continue to honor your memory by enjoying your times and live the island life when I can. Rest easy Music Man. You ran one Hell of a Race.
I didn't get into Jimmy until I moved to Florida 24 years ago. So glad my brother dragged me to see him in West Palm 4 years ago. Will be playing his music every time I go down to the Keys! RIP Jimmy!
My favorite Jimmy song. So many good lines in this one, Yes I am a Pirate 200 years too late. Occupational hazard being occupation just not around! and more..............
This song has some deep meaning to some of us Florida Boys. Now, my Carribean cruise is coming very shortly. Got a rum and coke on the table. Thanks for the many memories. Red skies at night bro.
What an endearing, lovable man. Can't recall any artist that smiled as much on stage as Jimmy. Thanks for all the years of joyous music that just set you free for a time anyway.💕💔
This was my Dad's favorite song. He passed away yesterday so Ive played this on repeat about 500 times as Ive bawled my eyes out. Im gonna miss him so very much but listening to this song brings some solace to a turbulent time. Probably go out in the gulf tomorrow and spend some time reminiscing.
No shit I'm now a pirate looking at sixty and made a enough money to buy a small town and pissed it away just as fast it took getting old to get it "wasn't meant to last" you make that much money that fast and it's gone that fast lol 😆
I live here in the Florida Keys . Sometimes when things happen, such as the loss of a loved one, we forget we live in paradise. Thanks for snapping me out of my stupor. Headed to Margaritaville !!
The lyrics of this song are so great. Everyone knocks on Buffet because his fans like to be ridiculous and have fun but the guy is a fantastic songwriter and lyricist who writes songs about life. That being said... Can we just forget "Math Suks"?
Such terrible news. Loved all of his songs, but this one was always my favorite. Your music always made people happy and will live on in our lives forever. Thank you for all of the memories you left us with. Sail on Jimmy! R.I.P .
I was so sad to wake up this morning and read the sad news of Jimmy Buffets death. A Pirate Looks at Forty never gets old, maybe you can be that Pirate now, Jimmy!
I clearly remember being in the 7th grade in the mid-1970s and listening to "Come Monday" on a 45 record with "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" on the B-side. In the 8th grade I bought the album "Living and Dying in 3/4 Time" and listened to it over and over. Then it was on to several other Buffet albums. His music gave me visions of adventure on the high seas so when I graduated high school I immediately joined the Navy. Even in the many years since I finished up my enlistment, I've still felt that call and give a lot of credit for it to listening to his music as a kid. So many great songs over the years but this one is still my favorite. Although I never met the man, when I heard of his passing I literally felt like I had lost a friend. He was one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed.
Jimmy Buffet one of the greats. this song is awesome like so many of his songs. Been listening to Jimmy since the 70s. his records never really sell much, but try getting a ticket to a parrot head concert. Sold out, always. Jimmy's greatest hits cd is a must for all Jimmy Buffet fans 9 /2/23 R.I.P JIMMY 🙏
This song took on a whole new meaning once I served for years in the navy. Your music will carry on in us all, and I thank you for sharing your talents with us while you were here. Hail the Traveler...!!! ❤😢
Same here. I graduated high school on a Friday night in 1981 and left for the Navy the following Monday morning and it was largely due to listening to his music through middle school and high school. It gave me a thirst for adventure on the high seas.
Im literally at the brink of tears rn 🫶🥺🥺 Finding his music through the news of his passing but somehow felt such a sense of home from thia song like ive known him for LIFETIMES. My condolences 🙏💜
I've been crying on and off all day. His was my first concert when I was 17. I had my first margarita, smoked my first joint and of all the concerts I've been to since will never compare.
I’m the same age as Jimmy, 75 this year. Never even heard this song until last week but sure can relate to being an “old” pirate. Learned tp play it in open G tuning and can’t get it out of my head. Fantastic lyrics!
Just turned 40 this month.. pops used to drill it in my head as a kid an when I turned 19 I flew off to the islands cause I wanted to see the pacific the way pop described it.. 10 years later I returned home and this song holds very true pops slept on a beach in the 70s as I in my 20s 🤙.. glad I changed my life cause I'd be dead or in jail 😃🍺
When my dad was looking at forty I didn’t know what a pirate or a parrothead is but now I AM parrothead looking at forty myself. I’m so happy to have a dad that introduced me to Jimmy Buffett when I found out what music is and I remember his great songs enough to wake up with them stuck in my head and want to find them on TH-cam by title. I love my dad, I love Jimmy.
That's a beautiful song and always brings a tear. But if you were looking at 40 in 1975, how old are you now? Not old enough, is my guess. Fair sailing, Jimmy. Don't get hung up on the reefs.
Machopaleen, he didn't write it about himself. He wrote it about Mr Clark. Jimmy Buffett was about 25 when he wrote it. I am 6 months older than Jimmy. He'll be 76 in December (2022)

A brilliant Buffett song. Great lyrics. One of my favorite lyric is from his song Mañana. He sings, “Women and water are in short supply.” Love that lyric.
“Come Monday” was a song I liked as a kid, it was hard to believe “Cheeseburger in Paradise” was the same guy. Those two songs really showed how there were two Jimmy Buffet personas and both were great.

Was either on or by the ocean in Florida from 75 -80 and The coral Reefer Band and Jimmy were always playing somewhere. Great time to be there.
I was there then and he was so young and so was I!! What a blast! My
kids wish they could have been half the places I was!
Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of them dream, most of them dream
Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
I've done a bit of smuggling, I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got stop wishing, got to go fishing, down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
I go for younger women, lived with several a while
Though I ran them away, they'd come back one day
Still could manage to smile
Just takes a while, just takes a while
Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown
Dave Matthew's opened up my eyes to this gem ❤
Sure miss Jimmy Buffet.his music will last forever .
