    Just ordered an Oppo 203. Don't wanna miss out if I wait until I get my OLED by the end of the year.
    Do you know if I'll get a nice upgrade in picture on my current 2014 4K TV model in the meantime?

    Having owned the BDP-105D, I think the only people who will really be saddened by this news are those who use their players to their full potential (as both disc spinner and standalone DAC), even if the SABRE implementation was never to my taste. Even with the budget to buy Blu--Ray movies regularly, I tend to watch them once and put them away : hardly great VFM compared to treasured albums I've listened to regularly for over 40 years, Their players represented fantastic value for reviewers - one box that would play almost anything digital, and a box that many 'real world' music lovers could relate to when the inevitable comparisons were made with the gear under review. Vale Oppo.

To an extent I always felt I made the wrong decision way back when I decided on an early Arcam delta 90 rather than the Audiolab 8000a back in the 80s....i just don't think they're what they were.... Audiolab, Castle Acoustics, Mission, Quad..... For me all seem to have lost charm...for me Luxman is the only one that that still holds allure.

    How correct you were about Streaming services killing the 4k market. I'm just now looking at getting either the Panasonic ubp-900 or the Oppo 203 now after just ordering my first hi end 75 inch Sony TV and a Bose soundbar. Do you think the oppo 203 today would still be higher quality picture and sound than the later 4k players. These days there isn't really much choice either the Sony 700m or the Panasonic 820. I'm looking at the 900 and Oppo as although the first they seemed the best made.

    I bought a 203, had a 103D and a significant step up.
    Knew Oppo was leaving the market, so my 203 was my final disc player.
    As the kind of guy who likes to make the best of my gear, I set about making the best Blu-ray player even better.
    See my Modding thread here if that’s of interest: theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?56087-Hey-guess-what-I%92m-about-to-do-Major-Oppo-mods
    I went the full Oppomod route.
    Linear power supply, upgraded clock, all improved silver internal wiring, i2s audio output board, (awesome to a Directstream Dac), Transport and case dampening and other stuff.
    Big upgrade in video and audio, as a disc spinner and Network streamer/ Roon endpoint it’s fantastic.
    Yup, video too.
    The Oppo’s HDMI input, let’s me plug in my Nvidia Shield and take advantage of the Oppo’s processing prowess for Netflix/ Amazon Prime, TH-cam and even to “Gamestream” PC games to the big telly and sound system in the living room.
    All possible because of the Oppo.
    It’s a helluva bit of kit, so glad I got mine.

    Very sad news indeed. I just bought a 203 last week, and I have one of their original dvd player the Dv-981. The only thing I didn't like is that if I play a cd, the sound would cut out for a few seconds and then resumes. Oppo said it's because I have a Sony tv hooked to it, the fix they told me is turn on the tv when playing a cd or disconnect the hdmi wire.

    Great video and it is truly sad and you are right, it will be a race to the bottom because streaming is slowly pushing the disc out. Best Buy will stop selling music cd and Target only wants to sell music cds on consignment. How long will it be before they try this with movies as well. That looks like a Luxman integrated behind you. If it is the one that I think it is, I heard it at Music Direct and I was very impressed with what I heard. I remembered Pioneer leaving that market and do you also remember Panasonic leaving the Plasma market as well. I still have two Panasonic Plasmas tvs and have had them for years and they have better picture quality than anything since, except OLED. Panasonic and Pioneer were so diversified so they were not hurt by this, but OPPO doesn't have the diversification and unfortunately the blue ray and headphone markets are over saturated, but OPPO quality will be missed.

    I am sad and embarrassed to say that I just became aware of OPPO about one year ago, in fact it was a few months before they pulled out of the market. I have been in the beginning phase of establishing a HIFI, stereo system, and have been looking at a decent Network player as my source along with a phono. I have been looking at the new SONY HAP S1, etc. and Cambridge network players, BUT I see OPPO BDP 105 for sale on various audio sites. What do you think? I mean, if OPPO is out, how can I get filmware upgrades?? I guess OPPO 105 and most certain 205 probably run circles around the aforementioned suppliers? Thanks.

    Yes its sad about OPPO .I'm still kicking around with my 103 model . Its true playing off a optical disc UHD movie or a BLURAY directly from your player is indeed way better performance than watching from a streaming service. I don't mind streaming services but I know its not the ultimate quality. Your dealing with a little compression . Back in the hay day of VHS with HI FI machines the sound was much more direct from the REMASTERED movie than the way it sounded from cable TV.

    A standard 2-Layer Bluray disc has a data capacity of 50 GB. On the other hand, a 3-Layer UHD Bluray disc has a capacity of up to 100 GB. Currently, streaming services are way far from delivering a full movie in a reasonable time (0.5 hr), but I have no doubt they will catch up eventually. And then all the content will be digital, with no physical media involved. You shouldn't be scared about that future, but excited of the possibilities, one of them being able to get rid of the disc slavery once and for all.

    • @joemarz2264
      @joemarz2264 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disk slavery. I would more say it’s slavery to streaming services that you pay each month and can take down your favourite film if it doesn’t suit a partial agenda or infringes on copyright law. Ain’t no one taking my disks.

    I think the decision to abandon this is from a kind of placebo effect. "Well Best Buy doesn't sell CD's anymore, and people are buying vinyl now, we'll just drop this because it's all about money and we can make millions selling cellpones, so why should we bother." Look vinyl came back and CD's will do the same. I also think it was the share holders and investors who dictated this decision. Very short sighted and myopic. Looking too closely at the profit margin.

    Sometimes, but not all the time, when one door closes, another door opens. Sure we lost the Pioneer Kuro but we got OLED's to take their place. As for buying an OPPO now, I'm gonna pass. Technology is constantly changing, I rather wait for what's new. Next year almost all the new products should have HDMI 2.1. That's just one example. Plus I hear there's other companies that make similar quality players (Cambridge Audio) and will have great streaming apps as well. The king is dead, long live the new king. Nice looking speakers, whose makes those?

    In two minds about their demise. I bought the 103D, and what got on my nerves was it's inability to play discs correctly a lot of the time, cutting into intros on many discs. Also not recognising 3D discs on first insertion a lot of the time. Not what you expect from a £600 player. However, when it worked the picture quality was great, although I was never impressed with the Darbee effects. I'll keep hold of it because I have a lot of SACD's.

    I was reading someone's OppoMod to the 205 on head.fi.org the other day:
    www.head-fi.org/threads/review-comparison-of-5-high-end-digital-music-servers-aurender-n10-cad-cat-server-totaldac-d1-server-auralic-aries-audiophile-vortex-box.787020/page-78#post-14117821
    He says in this thread that the audio was very good in opinion after there OppoMod upgrade. He says the upgrade compares very upgrade favourably to his Chord Dave whilst using the optical out from the 205 to the Chrod Dave. He like yourself has a very good Music Server.
    I'm guessing you will be very impressed with the OppoMod (especially into the Chrod Qutest)

      The OppoMod does a lot of what I have do to my music pc thats why I have wanted to do it for a while but couldnt really justify it.
      However after listening to the Qutest JCat LPSU and Luxman for weeks I put the Arcam AVR850 back in with the Luxman for L and R and watched the latest Planet apes and it sounded bloody awful.

    At 3:28. While I do sympathize with the loss of Oppo (one of the best electronics companies ever), stating "nothing is good that is cheap" is simply one of the biggest lies ever told. I own some expensive equipment and by contrast, I own some very inexpensive equipment. And my inexpensive equipment fairs quite well! . . . like the Sony X800 (paid $169), the Onkyo TX-8270 (paid $350), the audioengine P4N (paid $325), and my Infinity AC AIRCOM T9 (paid $99). All of these inexpensive, all of these fantastic performers. Do they compare to a $1500 Oppo? No, but to say they are bad because they are cheap . . . is just stupid.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you have missed my point there.
      If the world goes streaming only and then we see a race to the bottom who can do it the cheapest - that will likely mean quality will suffer at the same time.
      That's the whole point of the video really.
      You do get what you pay for in the majority of cases

    • @thetrumanshow4791
      @thetrumanshow4791 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not miss your point. It was crystal clear. And I agree with your last statement . . . you do get what you pay for.
      I've chanted it for years. You pay more, you get more. You pay less, you get less. All that is fundamentally true.
      As for a downward spiral in A/V quality, that remains to be seen. Sometimes the market has a way of correcting itself.
      Younger people tend to have less disposable income and therefore tend to gravitate to what is cheap or free (and therefore of low quality).
      When I was 23, I didn't have any money either. In my twenties, I was more concerned with paying the rent on time and putting food in my mouth.
      In my opinion, it will be older, wiser, wealthier, seasoned shoppers who will demand quality, put their cash behind their buying decisions, and the market will reciprocate.
      All that said, your statement "nothing is good that is cheap", is too broad, not specific enough, and still a lie and still incorrect.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont know about it being a lie - because it all depends on a point of view of value. Some will see Netflix £10 as cheap and amazing for the money.
      Others will think £10 a month is expensive.
      Netflix is brilliant and I dont see it as expensive but can it be classed as cheap. Would it still be the same quality if they only charged £2 a month - I dont think so - that was the point I was making.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I can explain it in a different way - when something exists and its looked to be made cheaper - its very rarely made to be better and cheaper.
      Usually cheaper means worse - doesnt mean we cant still enjoy it being worse but its very rarely made cheaper and better
      Adding value to a service or product is different and great but the mindset of we need to make this product or service cheaper very rarely comes without penalty

      LOL Just NO. They use software to virtualize blu-ray decoding. It's nothing like dedicated hardware and firmware. UltraHD BluRay is heavily compressed from Camera bitstream of 509mbyte/s to 12.5 mbyte/s. Maximizing the method of unpacking the compressed video is difficult complex task of decoding. You just can't achieve the same results with software alone.

I also have my computer and tv tuner plugged into my BDP-103''s HDMI inputs and use its volume control so that I don't have to spend $2000 on a multichannel preamp/processor that's good enough for music.
