  • How much junk would you keep?
    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners follows people who, by their own admission, cannot stop cleaning and carefully matches them with someone whose home is in dire need of a spring clean. Together these people with such contrasting compulsions explore how their different behavior affects their lives.
    A quarter of adults in Britain are so obsessed with cleaning and tidying that they spend more than four years of their waking lives on household chores, with many feeling compelled to abide by strict regimes and rituals.
    In programme nine, the first volunteer cleaner is 25-year-old office Manager Lauren from Dunstable. After a 13 hour day at work, she comes home to clean for over three hours every evening.
    Her home is immaculate and she even cleans her fridge and its contents every single day. One of Laurens friends works in a pub, and when he visits, Lauren sprays him with anti-bacterial spray before he can enter the flat. Lauren loves bleach, and she knows when she has used enough when her eyes are stinging or her nose is running. Lauren hopes to reduce the amount of cleaning she does and at the same time help someone adopt her techniques.

    These obsessive cleaners talked down to the hoarders badly. They've both got problems so neither is really better, but the hoarders were much more understanding and self-aware.

      I think maybe it’s because with the hoarders the problem was much more evident so they couldn’t NOT be aware you know ? OCDs more often than not their situations would be favoured so they aren’t as aware to the fact they have some issues too 😅

      I think it's because the cleaners think they're doing the "right" thing? But the hoarders understand that they shouldn't be doing that

      What people most of the time doesn't understand is that hoarding is sign of OCD too (it's not just about cleaning, it's much more deeper) and its difficult for them to get over the compulsion of hoarding

    This show would be perfect if they actually had mental health experts working with both people, its hard to sit through and watch somone who legitimately would be helped so much by an expert having to struggle through an issue on their own.

      So agree with you. And yet, in this show it seems they're trying to keep a positive vibe to everything and people are genuinely kind to each other. There's a similar show from the US on A&E channel and it's just terrible! Using hoarders - people with obvious psychological issues and genuinely in need of compassion and professional help - for their channel's activity, for viewers and judgemental junkies, feeding off people's honest struggles, mostly creating more drama - with barely masked judgements and guilt-tripping, with so-called "experts" acting completely unprofessionally, even rudely at times. Just an awful show, totally appalling! (And so typical of the US). So glad to discover this one is so different!

    • @Elketjeable
      @Elketjeable ปีที่แล้ว +52

      No, this was ideal.. Lauren needed the lesson that it's not just people being lazy or dirty, but that circumstances in life can have such an impact on humans that things can have such an outcome.. One's home is a reflection of one's mental state.. Lauren had a certain view on people that have houses in this state.. And the moment Sarah shared her story, because Lauren asked about it, Lauren felt horrible for being judgemental at first.. Her empathy showed, where at first it seemed like she had none (but that could've been because of her own anxiety), and she felt really guilty..
      If both cleaners would've been swapped, Lauren wouldn't have learned that lesson.. On the contrary.. She needed that.. Because indeed obsessive cleaning can turn to the opposite side when (another) trauma occurs.. It happens more than people think.. People who are fearfull of germs can have phases where they have messy homes because of depression and other factors.. They usually avoid the clutter and live in the places that are clean and try to keep those areas clean to the best of their abbilities, until they feel strong enough to tackle the rest.. It's double the anxiety and stress.. Sarah fits that description, because her house wasn't too bad, it was just full of clutter, but it wasn't extremely filthy like other houses on this type of shows.. It reflected the clutter in her head.. But it also showed her struggle to heal and her fight to still be that woman with the clean home, that she used to be.. It's a double lesson, because Lauren has now learned as well that everyone who lives clean, can unwillingly fall into a life of chaos because of circumstances..

    • @dubphilth
      @dubphilth ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to work with Lauren for about 2 years (this popped up on my TH-cam randomly with her in the thumbnail) she was a nasty, ignorant and stupid girl who would purposefully say things she knew were nasty to get a reaction and then pretend like she didn't know what she'd said was offensive. No one liked her and she was also known for putting it about a lot.
      Bottom line, she deserved the other toilet more than you realise.

    I had a colleague and dear friend at work who had OCD. I first noticed when he would set out his pens in either size or colour order - we used to joke about it.
    It became progressively worse to the point that he was getting in to work later and later (we could set our own times). It turned out he was having more and more difficulty leaving his house. Having to go back in to re-clean things. Unfortunately, it progressed so quickly and badly that he took his own life. He was the most wonderful gentle man and we lost him through it. This is a disorder that needs to be caught quickly, I just wish I had realised it earlier. RIP Will.

    Watching this and then watching a video by Aurikatariina really brings attention to how the filmmakers don't really care about either the OCC's or the hoarders. Both groups are suffering with mental health issues and all are deserving of respect and understanding. Instead, shows like these simply exploit them both in the name of spectacle, sometimes shaming or even mocking them. Aurikatariina, on the other hand, never even reveals the faces of those she helps, refusing to exploit these vulnurable people. The way that she speaks so kindly of them just goes to show how ugly these other shows are and how we ought to be treating each other. With patience, respect and understanding. ❤

    The hoarder who was struggling to discard of anything was someone who I felt for. We all hold on to things with the intention that we'll use it at some point. Before we've realised it we've accumulated a lot of things. Funny to see her discover some money in her house during the clean-up. Wish I was that lucky here. The most I've found and come across is a few pounds behind the sofa.

      It's to do with what is acceptable and unacceptable to society. Both the 'cleaner' and the 'hoarder' has a disability but one is seen as acceptable and the other is not. It must be traumatising for both people to deal with the situations they are placed in during this. Using disabled people as entertainment is sickening

I couldn’t live like these people are. I understand there’s a lot of complicated mental and physical health problems that in turn makes it harder for them to do it. But why don’t more people speak up about these houses and get the people suffering the help they need.

    I am OCD diagnosed and my house looks only a little better than these homes. OCD manifests itself in different ways. I never buy things I don't need, but have a hard time getting rid of stuff. It is so time-consuming, as I feel like I have to read everything before I put it in the recycle bin, or look it over excessively first, to make sure there isn't anything stuck on it that I want to keep, and to make sure I didn't write a note on it.
    I have a hard time getting started on my cleaning, because I dread the time it is going to take, or I worry about coming across something that will upset me and trigger a week-long fight in my mind to deal with the situation. (I am an HSP -Highly Sensitive Person).
    In public, I always feel I am leaving something behind when I leave, so I "over-check" the table, floor, etc. to the point where someone will say, "What the hell are you looking for" ????? It makes me feel out-of-control. 😢

    What always gets me about the cleaners is they actually don't seem to know anything about germs. She's flushing a toilet without the lid on which sprays germs all over the room. Putting her whole body all over it so she's covered in germs, putting a bottle of hand sanitiser she's just used under her elbow so the germs from that are all over her clothes. The other one was using a hover brush that's been all over the floor on stuff you touch like the remote etc. Bet if you used one of those germ lights over their house it's actually worse than a regular person's
