    Your assistant is not observing righty-tighty with the grip heads. Your sandbags are dangerously in the wrong place (the center of gravity is too high), they should be on the c-stand base and you need at least twice to three times the weight. That said, thank you for the useful demo of the units, but please use safe industry techniques when demoing.

      Right, I thought it was strange to see a sandbag on the grip head, I've never seen anyone do that haha. But hopefully they see this and learn

      yes to all of this, and you also need to have the large leg pointing towards the core of the weight

    Useful video, thanks! With your sandbags it might be best to place them on the legs of the stand instead, to keep the center of gravity low.

    Rule #1 of rags. NEVER PUT THEM ON THE FLOOR. #2 ...Let alone on the dirty grass. Put the frame on the stand horizontal. Actually less work and clean rags. I Won't even get into about a dozen safety hazards. Somwbody can get hurt in that back yard. Sheesh.

    Excellent info (available nowhere else btw). Wish you'd also had links to the stands you used--looks like at least 2 different kinds (and as a newbie I'm a bit confused by best C-stands for which tasks. Thx

    • @24FramesInc
      @24FramesInc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just updated my description with the C-stands. The other stands were Manfrotto Combo stands. Honestly, combo stands are a bit more sturdy as they have a wide base. How did you find out about this video?

    • @jefffitzgerald5396

      Hey there! I'd just like to chime in to say that I would HIGHLY recommend staying away from any C stand that isn't made by Matthews Grip or American Grip. Impact/Flashpoint/Kupo are substantially heavier and their grip heads blow and will frequently jam and/or loosen when you don't want them to. Matthews C stands aren't much more expensive than those and they're industry standard and will last a lifetime. There are a couple types of C stands you'll see. The two basic types are "Rocky Mountain" and "Turtle Base" style C stands. Rocky Mountain stands allow you to slid the largest leg up and down to level the stand on uneven terrain at the expense of having a non-removable base, which makes it slightly less compact. The turtle base style (called the C+ stand by Matthews) has a removable base, but no rocky mountain leg. These are heavier and more expensive, but break down more compactly which might be a factor if you're transporting in a small car and the base can be used on its own as a really low stand. Both types are useful in different situations so ideally you'd want to have a mix of both. Most grip truck rental packages I've seen have mostly rocky mountain versions with 1 or 2 turtle base versions.
      With all of that said...c stands really are not meant for holding big frames, ESPECIALLY outside when there are a ton of forces being exerted laterally on the stands due to the wind.They're really meant for small items like flags, nets, and occasionally small lights. Combo stands are a much better choice for frames due to their beefier columns, wider foot print, and built in junior receiver which is about twice as thick as a baby pin. Again I would go Matthews or American over anything from the cheapo brands.If you want to learn more about grip and electric I HIGHLY recommend Luke Seerveld's "Meet the Gaffer" channel as well as Dave Donaldson's "Grip Tips". I've linked both below.

    How sturdy is the 8x8? I was considering the Scrim Jim just because it looked a bit beefier. But it is significantly more expensive. Do you think the aluminum 8x8 frame has any risk of being bent, either through heavy use or a sudden, unexpected burst of wind?

    Humph... all of those modifiers should be mounted on medium rollers or combo stands. Seriously! Do not mess around with the safety of the talent under those things. You never want any of those coming down on anyone’s head. Outside, medium roller minimum, 3-35lb sandbags for each stand. And safety rope to tie them off in wind . Yes you can fly it on a c stand but frankly you are endangering everyone around it by doing so.

    • @Sunporchmedia
      @Sunporchmedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Worse yet, righty-tighty not being observed, not NEARLY enough sandbags, and what the hell are they doing up on the grip head instead of low, where they might actually do some good?

  • @Pcbdude82

    I'm looking at the 6x4 scrimjim made by wescott. I need something to help soften the harsh sunlight. Would the 55x79 glow kit do the trick? And what exactly is needed to make it stand on it's own? Sometimes it's just me and the subject. Is there another piece connecting the C stand to the panel itself?

    • @24FramesInc
      @24FramesInc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do own the scrim Jim 4x4. It’s fast setup. I’m pretty much a small operation so I get the need for speed.
      You just need a grip head. I will say that you can’t really use the glow 4x6 if you have a bit of wind. It can bend and break. Best for indoors.

    This is just a drop ship product: $400 for a frame and a piece of cloth, yeah this is why people hate the photo/video industry. The same exact one pictures and all is on alibaba and if your on that site you can look left notice the same company make others with stands for like $100.
    Also, sand bags on the c-stand grip, clearly you guys are dangerously in need of some one showing you how to use these products.
