Agreed. So much of what they sell as video gear is so expensive. A spring clamp to hold weights on a camera crane - when bought through a video store costs about 30 bucks. At a fitness store (exact same clip) $2.50. Marku's channel is really great and also very inspirational.

When I was thinking about making TH-cam videos, before I got sick last year, I had made-up all these plans on how to use cheap fabric from Walmart or Jo-ann's, PVC/PE pipe and joints from the hardware store to make stands, spring-loaded clips from Dollar Tree, and Christmas lights to make all sorts of reflectors, scrims, cookies, soft boxes, etc (because I was broke). I even lucked out on finding 2 heavy-duty tripods at Goodwill for $10 each that made me think I could start a new life the following week. That was one of the last things I remember. A few days after getting those tripods I went into cardiac arrest and coma, but amnesia meant that was the last day I remembered. It would be a month before I came home. I still thinking about making videos, but I lack the energy now.

Immediately after that, I woke up in the ICU on the third day after dying. It reminds me of an old Sunday School lesson: Be careful what you pray for, you might just get it.
Solid video, Markus. In a grip truck they're called "silks" and they are made of...originally silks, but I think they're some polyester these days. Anyway, same thing. Don't spend big money, even if someone gave it to you, just get the PVC and use joints to lengthen or shorten the sides, clamp the sheet or bath curtain on. Give linen a try (a bit expensive) or even tissue paper (disposable and recyclable). Experiment! Caveats: Avoid using multiple lights behind the diffuser unless you can bring them close together or within a space where their light cones overlap in an even flow, otherwise you'll get multiple points of light and multiple shadows (which can be an effect you might like). Check and recheck your light balance, the diffuser can add enough color to change the color temperature of the light being diffused. Of course, move the diffuser closer to the subject to get a softer shadow and farther back to get a harder shadow, same as you would with a light.

I have been using the bedsheet for a while now and love the window light it provides. It is also like spending 20 minutes retouching for how it softens skin.
Great video, some good advice. I gave made a 1.5m x 2m scrim Jim from plumbing white tubes for the frame and white a ti tear material. My wife used he sewing machine to make sleeves on the material All information apx £25 so I then purchased black material and now I gave black background drop.

This is quite a cinematography crew style, maybe that's why it works so well xD. All the time they use expensive gear, but simple in function, just a piece of white cloth, whatever is your preference and lots of structures to hold it high and low, along the light itself. In fact, I learn doing that way, sadly I work alone, but If i had an assistant or a studio I would do those tricks all the time. Who needs a nicely build softbox with flash mount when you can get a big 5 in 1 reflector and use the transparent cloth xD Of course, there are reasons and different needs, but if soft light is the only matter, big cloths are the absolute king.

Thanks for the tips Markus. I am using a shoot through umbrella for diffusion. As a backdrop I use a curtain from IKEA, does not have to be IKEA obviously. It just happened to be what I had at home.

@@MarkusPix 1" PVC is about $12...and as long as you dont use glue...should come apart and go together easily...use the spa fittings instead of the plumbing ones...
@@deadendkid1968 yes it does and if you have issues, take a fine sand paper and lightly sand around the ends of the PVC where each piece enters the joints and you are good to go. Other benefits of PVC are that you can make just about any shape or design by heating the tube and forming it. Even a hoop if you want. There are plenty of examples on YT for that... It's easy enough to label what goes where if you intend to have it be portable. You can fill the base pieces with sand to weight it down where needed. It's cheap enough that without worry, you can drill holes in some of your tubes "don't drill your connecting pieces as they cost more than PVC tube" and insert eyelet bolts to be used with paracord and cheap carabiners found on e bay or wherever, to quickly tie it down where needed if you are outside or want to hang it indoors. The major downfall of course is that it isn't nearly as rigid as some metal frames so if you do not work in additional cross sections in taller/wider designs then it will sag in the middle. By introducing cross sections you may create shadows if the design isn't done right although being creative in where you place cross sections, you could create preferable patterns of shadow even. I could go one and on so the last thing I'll add is that you can install metal grommets on the bed sheet in the appropriate areas to again, use cheap carabiners but this time, instead of paracord use elastic cord to attach the sheet to the PVC frame keeping it taut.

For the bed sheet you can go to Home Depot and for a few bucks more get PVC Pipe to make a frame too. ;) Might bring the cost up from $10 to at most $20 though .... ROFL TY again. I always stop what I'm doing to watch your videos when I get notified. They are that good my friend. :)
Try Garden Fleece (used for keeping the frost off plants). Or, plastic dust sheets - I made a simple frame from 1 inch pvc plumbers pipe (which comes apart easily). Both ideas work a treat.
Always nice to see Kara. And I agree the bed sheet diffused light looks great on Kara. And I do also like the $150 diffuser. It's light and portable and relatively cheap. I use a staple gun to attach green screens to a 1x3 on the ceiling which I screw in with 2 screws. I'm off to Good Will to get a cheap white sheet to attach to the ceiling in front of the 4' single light florescent lights I have loaded on light stands. Great suggestion.
The cheap bedsheet diffuser is a great, budget idea, but C-stands are expensive. A budget alternative to those would be microphone boom stands. These can often be found on sale and are a great option for low-weight stand needs.
and if you want a super cheap rolling frame for the bed sheet, get a cheap clothes rail with castors. also those super cheap clothes rails make an interesting light weight bar stand for an array of small led lights. on the opposite side of lighting i just picked up 6 black double bed throws that were end of line for £5 each, now i have some great blackout curtains. i also just been making 8 c stands, got a job lot of steel tubes, three sizes that fit in each other so i have a three section riser and several boom arms, (i am a retired panel beater / welder so the fab is easy) i made several grip heads too from 100mm steel discs of 3mm thick, welded square box on one for the stand mount and two square box on the other side for the bars to mount for boom, those two were mounted 45 degrees angle to each other for multiple bar setups. i made a proper c stand led system, but each leg can be moved up or down the riser independent of the others for various surface height, esp useful for confined spaces.
You can fold the bed sheet on itself one or two times, creating a smaller area but more light diffusion. Must have stands and clips tp support, but you probably already have those.

I think I'll buy one and tell my fellow photographers that I had wished I paid $1,200 for the scrim. If any of them say they want to get one, I'll just say you can have this one for $120 dollars. Great info, Markus - I've seen a DIY one you can make one that's 2'x4' using PVC pipe and a fitted crib sheet fits perfectly to that size.

Great video Marcus. Forgot to mention a simple reflector, you can remove the reflecting surface and usually they have a diffusion layer.

Very kewl guys! I can utilize my Savage backdrop kit and just clamp a bed sheet to the bars and pull taut. IF I ever get a studio. :-(

i also just been making 8 c stands, got a job lot of steel tubes, three sizes that fit in each other so i have a three section riser and several boom arms, (i am a retired panel beater / welder so the fab is easy)
i made several grip heads too from 100mm steel discs of 3mm thick, welded square box on one for the stand mount and two square box on the other side for the bars to mount for boom, those two were mounted 45 degrees angle to each other for multiple bar setups.
i made a proper c stand led system, but each leg can be moved up or down the riser independent of the others for various surface height, esp useful for confined spaces.

I use them and they diffuse light extremely well!

I've used a shower curtain before. The issue I found was that it tears easily, where the bed sheet might be a bit tougher.

We used a front projection system on my movie in '94 using a beam spliter, it was quite cool

You can fold the bed sheet on itself one or two times, creating a smaller area but more light diffusion. Must have stands and clips tp support, but you probably already have those.
Just add a second bed sheet...

What?! No link for the bedsheet? LOL! I liked the look of the bedsheet the best. It just wrapped the light all around her body with no harsh shadows. I think I'll buy one and tell my fellow photographers that I had wished I paid $1,200 for the scrim. If any of them say they want to get one, I'll just say you can have this one for $120 dollars. I'll be a multi-millionaire in no time :D
