  • The Open Pro Finals at the 2024 Lancaster Archery Classic were epic! Jeff Rainey, Matt Burns, Nick Kappers, Richard Bowen, Stephan Hansen, Marco Bruno, Mike Schloesser and Bodie Turner used the 12-ring to generate plenty of thrills, which is exactly why the 12-ring was created.

They are all so good. It seems almost like the whole process needs to change in order to make it harder for them to be perfect.

Yea I cant say I disagree. I understand what they are trying to do with the 12 ring but I'm still not sure I like it. It definitely gives a risk vs reward aspect to things.... I like when the 12 ring comes into play when an archer is behind and trying to catch up... and also when they use it in the final end as a strategy... but now it has got to the point where they almost have to shoot a 12 in every end to be a contender.... and if they are neck and neck in the final end, the archer that shoots last gets to decide if they want to tie it and shoot off or just go for the win... so whoever shoots second in the final end has a natural strategic edge over the archer shooting first, when traditionally it did not matter who shot first because neither one had a literal advantage over the other. Not sure I like that part of it.
It has its pros and cons clearly... Maybe for the pro class, they keep the standard 18m face, ditch the 12 ring and put them at 25 yards. That will bring out more 10's and the odd 9's as well... or just keep things at 20 yards and make the arrow size 23 maximum. They will drop some more 11's if it was 23 maximum.... making it kind of what it used to be in past years. The skill and bow technology is off the charts now... For most of us the 18m distance and target face is plenty hard.... but maybe there needs to be a distinction for the pro class now. Its not uncommon for amateur classes in sports to have an easier challenge than the pros... and then moving up to a pro division means the challenge to obtain those high scores gets harder...
Anyways... its amazing what's been going on in the archery world and I love it more than ever.... but, whether things change or not, its not a bad thing for these discussions to be had.

They need to be scoring from the outside of the arrow, but that will never happen because it will affect arrow sales.

Agreed. If they can continually pound 11's for days in a row, something needs to change. These huge indoor tournaments are getting very boring. @@Morpheen999

No need, the 12 ring was a great addition to the competition and this year really showed it's just a matter of time before it becomes a part of many shooters strategies.

@@sheyanderson4371 I think its a bit of a circus now...IMO anyways. I guess for the average non shooter its kinda fun to watch which is the idea behind it... but from a place of pure target archery its wierd. Matches can still be decided without the 12 and its more fair to both shooters. They all shot the head to head matches without the 12 and a winner is always decided. The problem I see with the 12 is it gives the shooter that goes 2nd a natural advantage. In a tied match in the final end, the shooter that goes 2nd gets to see what they need to do. Either they HAVE to shoot a 12 to tie, or if their opponent just goes for an 11, they can decide to go for the 12 and win... when you really dig deep into the possibilities of how these matches can unfold, there is some degree of unfairness with the 12 in play. I like it when they use it as a way to catch up and get back into the match, which is how it was often used in past years... but this year it became a bit of a circus. I don't like that they will now feel they have to shoot a 12... and if they drop it early in the match its basically over before it starts... and whoever shoots second has a natural advantage of knowing what the other did. This is spot target archery where its played out as shot for shot... its not ASA. In a wierd way, having a 13 or 14 in the middle of the 3 spots might help. It will give the person that misses a 12 a chance to get back in the match.... but then it just becomes even more of a circus. In my opinion they should just go back to standard spot shooting. If the pros are just getting too good, make the max arrows 23 diameter and you will see some more 11's get dropped.
This is all just my opinion on the matter anyways. Not looking for an argument, just stating how I feel about it.

@@Matt-jl8xf I shoot 3D and hunt, but not much into indoor target, so I definitely get your point of view. I asked some friends of mine, a couple who have been shooting for 30+ years, what they thought of it, but have yet to hear back. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if they feel similar to you.
In that case, maybe it should stay special to LAS Classic? Shooters get a slight change of pace but overall their indoor circuits stay traditional.
The only problem I do see with this becoming popular, is the industry will go where the money is. If shooters and viewers start to prefer the 12 dot format, it may lead to a mass adoption or even complete adoption down the road.
Appreciate the comment and point of view. Definitely brought a perspective I didn’t think about as a non-target archer/competitor.

@@Matt-jl8xf Stephan Hansen had a very different view of the 12. He said it gives him control. If you notice, he chose to shoot first and he chose first to shoot the 12. He said either he misses or the other guy has to keep up under pressure. Stephan is the first archer to use the 12 the way we imagined it.... Well, actually, Dave Cousins tried to do it last year, but he missed it his first time out and so he got defeated. But Dave came out and stepped on the 12 for his very first arrow because he saw it as an opportunity to apply pressure. Yes, all matches in elims were decided...many in this division were decided by 1-arrow closest to center shootoffs. There's no risk/reward there. The archer had no choice, where Stephan said he likes having the option to take control of a match.

People are all excited about the 12 ring but the thing people don't get is matches can end in a few arrows now. First guy to miss loses. This final was over in 8 arrows. The rest of the arrows become a waste of time. Not sure I like that idea.

Very true. Compound competitions aren't so much fun to watch, the bows have just gotten way too accurate. They should increase the distance to at least 70 meters for this to be fun to watch.

Having no risk in the competition is boring and great shooters are increasing in number every year. Having the 12 ring introduces actual risk and strategy to the competition, just as the 14 ring does in ASA.

Interestingly....Stephan Hansen...who was actually in the competition, said the 12 ring gives the first shooter the advantage. If you noticed, he always chose to shoot first and he always chose first to shoot the 12. He said the 12 gives him control. Either he misses, or he gets to put the pressure on the other shooter. He said before he started shooting he was going to go for the 12 often.

Hey PJ . Hope you got some rest between tournaments. I am afraid I am with Steve Anderson on this one, the second guy is in a better position. The first guy "must" hit it, while the second shooter "might " not have to shoot it at all. Advantage second shooter. If the first shooter does not go for a twelve, that also gives advantage to the second shooter on his last arrow to go up a point if he wants to try. Advantage second shooter.
I will give you that it was exciting for a few ends, but the final was over in 8 arrows which I am not sure I like as a spectator. We will see how this plays out in the future, but the way this is shaping up, every pro shooting first will have to shoot a 12 each round until someone misses. If that does happen, there really is no more "strategy" to the 12 anymore. We will see.
Thanks to you and everyone at Lancaster for all the work that goes into this tournament. Outstanding tournament as always either way.
