Chet Baker played a Bach 6B before switching to a 6C after his dental "accident." And he produced one of the greatest jazz tones ever heard. I play a Curry 6M, which is a bit shallower. I love it.
Blaine, Blaine, Blaine. Dang man, so many of us go on endless MP safaris and some of us never come back! LOL! I was in the same boat as you. I started out in jr. high school with a Bach 7C because everyone said that's what you do. But, my friends all told me that my next mpc should be a Bach 10-1/2C because it would facilitate high range playing, and we were all into Maynard Ferguson and Doc Severinsen back then. But, I too had been playing with a lot of pressure and my lips would also become swollen to the point where I couldn't blow any air through these smaller mpcs. Since then, I've mostly been playing on 3C sized mpcs (e.g., Yamaha Bobby Shew, Kanstul Claude Gordon 3) but still moving between those and up to a Schilke 14, 17 and 17d4d. But, alas, I've also been experimenting with my Kanstul Claude Gordon Personal, which I am liking quite a lot lately, which feels smaller than my CG3. But, I am also making a conscious effort to back off on the mpc pressure, too, and my practice sessions now last longer and my chops don't feel as tired or wasted at the end. Good luck with your new Bach mpc, Blaine, and thanks for the video!
Hey Sean, thx for the view + comment. I did ask Harrelson to make me a 7dw rim, but they can’t do it anytime soon because they are working on Muse trumpets and not 5mm bits at the moment. I got a Megatone 7dw today, as I’m really enjoying that on my chops and always like an mp with more mass. My practice sessions are only an hour a day at this point. Only 2 gigs since the pandemic started ... so I’m not sure how I’ll feel after a typical 3 hour gig ... but look forward to that = sooner than later. Bottom line is that I’ve had no tooth pain since going to the 7dw!
@@blainekelley816 Glad the new mpc is working out for you well! BTW, your video stuck in my mind and when I was polishing my safari collection, I picked up my ol' Yamaha 11 and tried her out again ... wow, I'm really like playing her again! So, I'll see if I want to move back into the 3C+ range again, or stick it out with this 11 for a bit longer, or from now on. I also find I have more endurance on the 11 and it is much easier to move about the lower and higher ranges, too. Wish me luck! :-)
Very interesting video. Thanks. It would be impossible to list the hundreds of mouthpieces I have purchased, played and sold over the years. It’s been an addiction, obsession and hobby. It’s been fun, I guess. Ha ha. If I would have spent as much time practicing as searching for the holy grail of mouthpieces I’d be a better player today. But that’s ok. It is what it is. I’ve reached similar conclusions in my search that you have. Deep cup thin rim mouthpieces sound great for a little while but wear me out. Shallower cup wide rim mouthpieces are more comfortable on the chops and help with endurance and range support. The trade off is in flexibility - but there is always a compromise with any mouthpiece you choose. The best to you.
I tried the 7CW as an experiment. Then ordered an AR Resonance piece that was similar and have stuck with that ever since + purchased a similar one for flugelhorn too. I can't go too shallow, as my chops close off in the mp after playing a bit and my chops swell a bit ... so a C or D cup seems to be best . Good luck with your playing. Thx for watching and replying too!

Curry makes great MPs. So happy for you to find one you love!
Great video, thanks for posting!
