When this came out, everyone thought it was another Bee Gees smash. The song itself, the production, the instrumentation and the harmonies are pure Bee Gees. This song had tremendous radio airplay, absolutely love it! As noted below, she makes a perfect female addition to the iconic Bee Gees harmonies!
I was so delighted to have met Cheryl Gray (Samantha Sang) on a few occasions. She lives in the next suburb to me, in Melbourne Australia. Very down to earth and a beautiful soul. 10/10 voice and I have her Ultimate Collection CD's here.
Yeah that SOB outlived all three of his younger brothers and although all of them were talented it is clear that he was the most talented, also the best looking. Life aint fair.
There was a female BeeGee, their sister Leslie who sometimes filled in when they needed another person at concerts, especially when Robin wasn't getting along w/Barry.
Yes this song was written by Robin and Barry and was also produced by maybe the best production team of the late 70's, Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson.
Samantha Sang is listed as the artist, but everything about this track smacks of the Bee Gees - everything. It reminds me of "More than a Woman" written by the Bee Gees and one of their most popular songs, but never released by them as a single. Instead The Tavares sang it on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack and had a top 40 hit. But to me it will always be a Bee Gees song.
Yeah, they also recorded many songs of theirs that were made famous by other artist recordings, such as "If I Can't Have You" (Yvonne Elliman) and "Heartbreaker" (Dionne Warwick).
Another artist similar to Samantha Sang is Yvonne Elliman, from the great State of Hawaii! She had a hit called "If I can't have You". If you haven't already heard this one, you should check it out.
Yes, Yvonne's looooong run as Mary Magdalene in the original concept album, Broadway run and movie "Jesus Christ Superstar" put her on the map. She shines on "Everything's Alright" and "I Don't Know How To Love Him".
Listen to the Bee Gees version and you'll hear all three of them. And they sound fantastic. Where you say it just kept getting better and better? On the Bee Gees version it's like that on steroids with Robin, Barry, Mo coming in and out on the chorus. It's so mesmerizing. I fell in love with this version, then I heard theirs and played it on repeat. A lot. Each brother sings together and separately throughout like on Nights On Broadway, Fanny, Be Tender With My Love and some of their others I really love. I think they sounded best when they were all featured. For Whom The Bell Tolls features Robin on the chorus, and it's amazing too. Then again, songs that feature one brother are hard to beat like Robin's I Started A Joke, and so on.
LOVE IT!!! Barry is best known for his falsetto, but also has one of the rarest and best male tremolos (soft, whispy vocals). You really should react to other Gibb classics recorded by another female in this time - Yvonne Elliman LOVE ME and also IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU. These hits for these and other female vocalists led to icons like Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick and Diana Ross requesting songs!!
I love Emotion. Samantha Sang has a very beautiful voice that blends so well with Barry’s. As beautiful as her voice is it’s Barry’s background falsetto that really grabs at your soul. The background vocals were all Barry. You should really get into that Bee Gees rabbit hole for fantastic music like their R&B songs TOO MUCH HEAVEN and LOVE YOU INSIDE OUT ❤❤❤
Great react. And love that you called out there’s just no room to pause between the first chorus and the second verse. Just a seamless, smooth song with amazing vocals.
Also, Bee Gees and Samantha went all the way back to Australia days.they promised her a song or two to help her in breaking through the US UK music scene. Barry coordinated / engaged the Brothers' production team. Song was written in the late 1970's, when the Bee Gees were in their hit-writing frenzy mode. Check out the hit the did for Yvonne Elliman "IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU " -- #1 BILLBOARD HOT 100.
@@jodij6280 The Bee Gees were born in Douglas, Isle of Man-- Barry Gibb in 1946, and the twin Gibbs Robin and Maurice, in 1949, then the family moved to Manchester a few years later. The family immigrated from Manchester, England, UK in 1958, to Brisbane/ Queensland, Australia,, landing on Barry's12th birthday. Their formative years were spent performing as a novelty children's act, later a teens' trio of singers. When the boys determined they were spinning their wheels getting nowhere in Sidney, they convinced their parents to move back to England so they could join the last years of the "British Invasion" of pop/rock bands. The boys arrived in early February 1967, when within a few weeks, the same management company for the Beatles, NEMS, signed the talented brothers to a 5-year contract. The rest is music history. Barry Gibb was barely 20, and the twins were just 17.
I wonder how it will sound like if she also recorded our love because barry offered emotion and our love to samantha sang. When andy recorded it, it also had the "whisper singing"
I can see you are mesmerized by the harmonies, so please I advise you to listen to the Bee Gees' version with the magic that only those three brothers can do. It would be great if you dig into that rabbit hole which is hard to beat, more than 1.000 songs written by the Bee Gees mainly for themselves, but also for other great artists which always ended up in number one.
When that chorus came in it gave me chills. It took me back to my high school years. I love this song. Thanks for your great reaction to it. I hope to see more Bee Gees from you. Their catalog is huge. My all time favorite group. No others can compare. ❤️
If you decide to dive down The Bee Gees rabbit hole, I highly suggest you do it chronologically (starting in 1959) to get a feel for how they transitioned from soft pop rock, in to disco (1977-1979). HBO had a documentary a few years ago titled “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”. It was very good.
And it's sad that they label the BeeGees as disco artists when they're more than that. They started as Soul/R&B and just keep adjusting their music with the times. Musical geniuses.
@@pgko7123 Yes, they had a substantial career beforehand and a fan following, but disco (and Saturday Night Fever) put them on the mainstream map where they exploded.

When are you doing The BeeGees? Nobody ever in music history has harmonized voices as good as those brothers. They have composed songs for so many popular artists in the past 60 years. Barry Gibb is also on the background vocals of Dionne Warwick's "Heartbreaker." Speaking of The Bee Gees, also check out their brother, Andy Gibb, who sadly passed in the 80s or 70s.

Barry has a sharp falsetto. The way he can soften it is if robin also sings the same part (like in the song tragedy) so i think since robin co-wrote this, he also sang the falsetto with barry.
