I’ve ridden the R6 platform for 8 years. I’m intrigued about the R7 as a street option. Thought the name RS7 would’ve fit better. R7 made me think 750cc super sport…

actually it already kind of has a name that follows Yamaha naming scheme. the real name of the R7 is actually the MT-07R. just like the FZ6 turned in to FZ6R when it got the sportier fairings. also the FZ6R is kind of what the R7 is. a sport bike lookalike that ain't really a sport bike for people who don't want a real sport bike but want something that looks like one

I've had a couple R1s, a couple MT10s, a couple R6s, among other sport bikes... got a R7 on order. Looks like a perfect bike for the streets of my region of the country. Not something I would pick for the open, dry, smooth, and fast roads of the South Western States of the US, I would go with an R1 for that. But where I live it is hilly, twisty, lots of rain, the roads are rough, and lots of vegetation next to the road... which if full of animals that jump out. And lots of LEOs. R7s looks like a good fit.

I absolutley get the comments regarding the on paper lack of performance of the R7. However having ridden all sorts of poweful bikes, I dropped to an XSR700 back in 2016. I love it, a brilliant balance of fun, the biggest reason being that MT07 engine, its a gem. Far more fun than its figures would suggest. I noticed that given I'm an amateur rider even after 15 years riding, i have to really watch throttle inputs in corners and that ruins the fun a bit. My next bike will be smaller. Yeah the R7 was a smidge faster around such a tight track where the R6 could not really stretch it legs. Unless you live by the Tail of the Dragon the R6 and other 600-class race replicas are absolute trash street-bikes. The utter lack of torque only makes things entertaining at extralegal speeds and that's no way to live. I forsee the R7 being far, far superior as a middleweight sportbike for the masses instead of a zillion-RPM machine that feels lethargic as a scooter until triple digits.

It is interesting because the r7 is basically a linear jump in price/performance from the R3. The problem being they should have moved the line further. 75hp isn’t bad but it’s only 33hp ahead of the r3. I agree with others they should have went with an R9 or something of a larger twin since they already breached the 600cc insurance line. Insurance is bananas compared to the R3, with the R7 being over $1k a year with full coverage you might as well spend the extra and get a liter bike.

No no no, bored of twins and the sound they make. If I wanted a twin sports I'd head to Italy and pick up a Laverda 750S for £4k. We're living in a nanny state, I was reading that bikes fall into the same catagory as petrol/diesel cars, that the UK gov are banning combustion engined bikes too. I don't get it, 37 million cars in the UK and only 1 million bikes half of which are used for a few days a year so I don't undersatand why petrol bikes are being banned when they account for so little polution.

    • @graeme6539
      @graeme6539 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It doesn't matter. Once the petrol cars disappear, so do the petrol stations & the petrol bikes won't be able to get anywhere. We'll get a stay of execution compared to the cars, but in the long run, we depend on the same infrastructure. That's assuming that petrol cars do go the way of the dodo. If electric can't scale up properly & synthetic fuel or hydrogen come good, then everything changes again.

I know why the journalist's keep hammering away at the price of this bike however 8200 pounds is still a lot of money. Unless you are planning on racing it in a class, in which case your going to surpass that Aprilia money quickly, why would you not buy a used anything else that's better. Almost any supersport out there built in the last 10yrs is faster, has better components, aftermarket support and will cost considerably less. @@BySixa was hard to find decently put together reviews of the cb650r. Yammy noob kinda glossed over it until he took it to the track and really opened her up, then he loved the bike.
In the end I think most other bikes in the 650/700 class would be excellent for darting around the inner city/twisties, and I have zero complaints with the cb650r in that regards. But I also put a lot of highway miles to get to the twisties and in TX if I’m not doing 85 on the highway I’m gonna be roadkill. Hence the desire for something with a bit more top end than a parallel twin.
Best way to describe riding the cb650r is there’s a little flat spot in the power band at about 6k rpm. Below 6k it’s quite torquey, not a torque monster, but plenty of torque to dart around and have fun. About 6300 rpm it’s all HP and when slamming through the gears I never drop out of that go juice.
At some point I’m going to get an exhaust (kinda liking the quite, other bike is dump out exhaust and loud af) and get it flashed, which will remove the flat spot.
Edit: also keep in mind that more fun is relative to what you’re trying to do. In the words of yammy, I’m not tryin to ride “dank nooners” all day. I was after something quick, real world fast (don’t need to hit 90 in first gear), and agile. The cb650r/cbr650 delivers in all of those.

With technology as it is, you can buy an R1 (with rider modes, premium tech, and other fun shit that the r6 lacks) and it will behave better on the street than an r6 while weighing the same as an r6. Having bought my 60th anniversary r7 below MSRP I would say I haven’t gotten played at all considering I actually use it on the street. And like my old r6, Has enough power to do what I need to do.

The R7 seems to be such a firm favourite with journalists and I get it - none of us REALLY need all that horsepower on the road - its brought up all the time, but personally? I dont think The R7 deserves the title of 'R' - if you look throughout their history, its such a soft limp release now - of course we can all blame euro emissions rules.
For me personally its about as exciting as a wet bag of chips. That said, I like your content here, always have, so its not just some grumpy youtuber venting without a point just to be awkward and rude. I think I have a point. Yamaha release so very few truly exciting, sexy bikes now. Just look at their line up.

@@theonlyredspecial I would assume the same person rode both bikes. I dunno man, more hp doesn't mean more fast everywhere. You need to be able to use it.
A fiat would do as well as a ferarri on a gocart track too.

@@Daniel-dj7fh I’ve been a Yamaha fan since I was a kid. Im 50. This bike shouldnt have the ‘r’ moniker on it. It’s a basic twin putting out minimal horsepower. The r series bikes were always exciting and at the top of their field. Check out Yamahas history. That’s my main point. And it all ties in with Yamahas recent approach of just releasing dull, budget bikes so they can shift units.

@@theonlyredspecial Wanna know of a Yamaha R bike which is a single and makes 15hp? The R125 has been on roads since at least 6 years, I never recalled anyone complain about that bike.

The R7 is under no circumstance a replacement to the R6. Discontinuing the R6 and thinking the R7 will replace it is just dumb.

Feels like a video trying to sell the R7 instead of a "head to head". I ride 2008 R6 and that thing is crazy fast. Buy a used 2017 model FTW

I really wanted the r7 until I sat on one. Yamaha went way too race oriented and made a bike that's uncomfortable for the road and underpowered for the track. What I wanted was an r3 with more power and better suspension. What I got was an r6 with no power.

I thought you were going to compare the R7 to the R6 track performance? I agree for a light bike with a little more than half the HP, the R7 is a competitor in its class. The R6 is not in the same class which I think you have said. Sad to see the R6 go.
