Transmission pan removal and fill
Fluid change, drain and fill - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I can’t believe your the first guy I saw remove the pan the right way, by removing the filter. Genius.😊
Other than the music killing me, it's a great video.
Pull the fluid out through the dipstick tube with a fluid extractor and you won’t spill a drop when you drop the pan. So much cleaner/easier. I did my 6L80 last week and only had about 1/2 cup of fluid remaining in the pan after.
That’s a good idea. Thank you for the comment.
I was wondering if I was the only one that was planning on this!
My Silverado has a sealed transmission do you have any insite into where the fill bolt is located?
If its like my car with 6L80, it's on the passenger side of the transmission, a little high up, near the exhaust. It's not a bolt either, it's a plastic plug that has a trick to open it.
I did it that way and only a few drops from transmission innards while removing
Dude you’re a freakin genius! Thanks so much for this video. I knew there had to be a better way to get the pan off. Helped me out on my 2012 Suburban!!
Awesome. Glad it worked out for you!
Saved me alot of trouble getting the pan off thank you
What i did to help make the job less messy is i used a hand pump. I put the hose down the fill tube and sucked out all the ATF before the pan drop. Great tutorial!
I change my 2016 6l80 twice a year from brand new and I just loosen the 6 nuts at the exaust flanges by manifolds on mine and doing it twice a year they dont rust tight. I loosen them about half way and the cross over pipe drops a good inch. Pan comes right out then. However your way was very clever! Great idea pulling the filter out becase that is what is preventing the pan from coming out.
im literally just about to do this seeing the filter removed first gives me alot of hope lol
Thanks for showing this. Most people think you need to perform exhaust "acrobatics" in order to remove the pan.
I know. I had to remove the exhaust crossover on my old ‘97 Tahoe and let’s say there was a lot of foul language and a hand grinder involved. Had to be a better way
😂😂
Hahaha " exhaust acrobatics". I asked some coworkers that work at Gm what they do to flush the ATF and its exactly "acrobatics" that they do😂. I told them thats theres another way and all I got was deer in the headlights look.😅
This is AWESOME it worked really well on my 2014 silverado just a little wiggle room and you'll get it
Great video. Ours is same year but a Tahoe, everything looks the same and getting close to 35K. I just checked the dipstick and glad it has one, not liking that they are removing them and putting a cork in that opening (behind the a heat shield).
Doing this on my 2020 Tahoe next week. You make it look easy! 🦅
Thank you and good luck! Check out my other video of performing a fluid exchange of the remaining oil to do a complete replacement.
@@smokingoatgarage - great video. I have a video using vacuum to extract any fluids of any amount. Use it on my 03 Suburban (275k) all the time. I just use good old ac delco fluid. Use to be a redline fan like you are with Amsoil but to be honest we change and maintain our trucks so much that perceived value of those high end brand fluids don’t make sense to me.
WOW I've been watching youtube , and guys loosen the cross member and jacking the transfer case , and then pulling down the exhasut with ratchet straps . sir you just cured the disease LOL thank you !
Facts 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you sir. Much appreciated advice.
I hope the people who messed with their exhaust or jacked their transmission watched your video, after the fact😆
You sir, are the steely eyed missile man. Your video works.
I have a 2014 Sierra, I love how GM still hasn't figured out in 2020 that putting an exhaust crossover tube inches from a transmission pan isn't a good idea.
Especially on a transmission that's known to run hot as it is
They print new engineers every day
It gave me all kinds of hassle. Until I saw a video saying to Jack the transmission up 1/2". Then it slid right out
Or install a drain plug
Thanks for the Video. If I am correct, you may still need to pick up the rubber washer that goes over the filter on top. the filter comes with a rubber washer that needs to be inserted on top of it.
Nice video and glad you used the right oil too. The only thing it was missing that i was hoping to see is to drain the lines as well. There is a lot of fluid left in the lines so unless you get most of the oil out its not as efficient. Good video overall
I'm watching this as I am about to attempt a fluid and filter change in my 2017 Silverado. I bought a new pan, ($19), because I will drill a hole to drain it, and will get a drain plug welded in to change the fluid every 10K. I was hoping to see the best spot in the pan to install the plug without interfering with internals.....I'm hoping my pan drop will go as easy as yours! Thanks for the great tips!
You might be better off getting an extractor. The fluid filter and magnet are inside the oil pan, and the only way to service those is to remove the pan anyway.
Great video. Thanks!
I used the prybar with floor jack to force exhaust down slightly.no need to remove fiter done in 1 hour.
Just did this service on my 07 Escalade. Was a pain taking the pan out, next time imma just let the pan hang and suck the remaining fluid out install the new filter and do it that way
Thanks for the video and technique. Now I feel confident enough to do it myself instead of spending $500 at a mechanic.
working smarter not harder , so correct in this case , thank you alot
I was unable to remove the pan on my 2014 gmc sierra 1500 5.3L. I resorted to changing the oil and filter with the pan in place. I had enough room to do the job including taking out the magnet for cleaning
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Great!
Thank you for watching!
I appreciate your video. Did you change the filter seal or just use the factory one?
Great video - I've tried getting that pan off of my Silverado w/ 6L80E - the only way I could do it was pull the exhaust down-even after removing the filter
Interesting. I would think much of the design would be the same/common between the platforms.
@@smokingoatgarage I think it just has to do with build variation. It's an engineering abomination that they did that, that is for sure
Question, what is the transmission temperature you have after 24 hours i got 60 degree city , so I don't know if that's normal, I got the same transmission...
Same here. 2014 silv 1500 4x4 6l80e and he seems to have another .5" between his ex and trans pan lol I def can't just finesse it like that. One of the corners gets hung on whatever the long brown component is inside the pan🤦🏽♂️
@@juliolopez330260c city is good. Mine gets to over 80c.
Gr8 video one suggestion! Eye protection!
Thanks. Good information. 💯
Glad it was helpful!
Couldn’t hear much of what you were explaining, the background music was too loud
Fixing that on future videos. Thanks for the feedback.
You showed the finicky parts instead of just saying, 'well, it is possible and i got it in there...'. Thank you
Kill the background music, it’s annoying and unnecessary. Great video!
Thanks for the feedback. I have reduced the background in follow on videos, thought it was a bit much myself.
Ya good job not making a mess with oil. Bad job with music 😊
They run to hot change thermostat amazon superior transmission & I'm installing a drain plug in my pan
get a sifon pump. pump out from dip stick tube. measure what came out, fill, check level.
the filter is just a mech screen, keep the fluid clean and new and you never have to change the screen/ filter
I was about to change the fluid on my 2020 Silverado with the 6l80e but there is no fill tube/dipstick.
It’s only on the models before 2015 that you have do all the extra stuff, if this was a older model you would definitely be jacking up the transmission. GM changed the way they did the clearance for those pans because people complained about it so much.
Didn't work on 2017 silverado pan Whatever is in the back left corner was not cooperating. Unbolted the transmission mount and jacked it up
My 2019 Silverado has a drain plug in the transmission pan . I wonder why that 2020 suburban don't?
Great video thank you. I've heard that it's a good idea after flushing the entire system, if the old fluid was severely dirty, to drive it 3-5 hundred miles and perform another pan drop and filter change, topping off with another 4-5 qts. The theory being that the new fluid could dislodge old crud that will clog up your new filter.
Has anybody else heard that?
Yeah dislodge sawdust from stopping your trans from slipping
No idea how you did that. I tried for 2 hours. Then tried jacking tranny up and pulling down on exhaust and still couldn’t get it. Ended up replacing filter and cleaning magnet and bottom of pan from where it hung.
You have less room on truck or some model trucks. I decided to try this after watching but I don’t have nearly the gap in the front of the pan. Can’t get the filter out. SUV must have a little more room between exhaust
Also, I don't know if the Transmission oil in the pan is the only one that needs to be replaced. More oil needs to be removed.
Mine came right off even though the inter net said get ready to yank and pry. 2012 2500 hd 6.0 gas
Genius!
Great video, thanks. Question. Did you replace the seal holding the filter in place? Not sure if this needs to be done. Thanks.
I did not replace the filter seal. I checked it and it was plenty pliable. They are difficult to remove without damaging the case. A special tool is needed to do it right (internal seal slide hammer).
excellent video.....I thought there should be an easier way to get that pan outta there without screwing with the exhaust or jacking up the transfer case. Did you put the new gasket in the hole for the filter or reuse the old one?
Thanks
Thanks for watching. I reused the filter seal as it was still pliable and it’s a pain to get out.
How do I know what type of transmission I have?
How did you put the other parts in ?
I was hopeful on my 2017 Chevy Tahoe and I've spent the last hour trying this and it does not work.
Did you install those other parts?
How the ride with amsoil ATF compared to oem ATF?
No way could I get the pan out of my 2017 Yukon. Even with pulling the exhaust down with a ratchet strap to floor jack. Was still able to get the filter changed a magnet cleaned. I pulled 5 quarts out of the dip stick tube then almost another quart that was left in the pan
I would say the fluid looks worn for the milage.. and yes the heat. Is that the 8 speed trans? Was that the updated fluid or same put back in.
It’s a 6 speed transmission. I used Amsoil synthetic oil for the replacement.
That fluid looked good
Very helpful
Thank you for the feedback!
@@smokingoatgarage where do you buy that 1 gallon amsoil transmission fluid?
Awesome work, did you re-use the filter seal inside the trans?
I think he did.. that's the part I wanted to see
Yes I did. I’ve taken the time to remove it on GM transmissions in the past and was not worth the risk of damaging the pump. I stuck my finger in there and it was still pliable and not brittle. If you do remove it I recommend getting a small slide hammer with puller.
How much fluid did the trans take after filter ? Is there a fill plug at the bottom of trans you could use to refill too?
No drain or fill plug. Fill is through the dipstick under the hood. If I recall there is about 5 QTs in the pan, and the rest is in the transmission, primarily the torque converter.
You didnt show ...but did you replace the filter gasket going in the transmission. It should have come with the new filter?
I did not for this install. I have replaced before on a GM transmission and without the proper tool there is high risk of gouging the pump case, which is bad. To get the gasket out safely you really need a slide hammer puller with small inner diameter attachment. The seal was fine and still engaged well.
I don't know why everyone goes crazy replacing that little seal. It is definitely far from worn out.
@0:42 you mention a "device that you had put together for drain and refill ...." But I didn't see it in the video ?
See this one for that description
th-cam.com/video/SOyLso8IfWQ/w-d-xo.html
Don't forget the o ring on that filter
Video good...
NOISE ( music) should be none....
did I miss it? where did you install the temp bypass unit?
Look at 14:28 for the install of the thermostat block. If you want to see the buildup of the thermostat delete kit it’s in a separate video.
Did all that and left the magnet out I stuck it to the bottom of the pan put it back the next time around
Did you replace the O-Ring (gasket) for the filter? Why not do a fluid flush while you're at it? There will still be a lot of old fluid still in the Torque Convertor and Valve Body that should be flushed out IMHO. But yes.... this is a GREAT VIDEO on the pan removal and replacement! Thank you!
Yes I did perform a fluid exchange during this pan removal. See my other video on this process. I did not change the filter gasket on this change. They are very difficult to remove without scratching the pump bore. It was plenty pliable. Thanks for watching!
What other video are you talking about? Where it shows the flush
Does this method work on a 2014 Silverado?
I can’t say as the exhaust crossover may be different on the pickups.
So what did you have to do just remove the filter!?
Remove the filter and rotate the pan as shown to clear the internal components.
Good video, but the side music has to go, can hear over music
Thanks for the feedback. I will fix for future videos. Stuck with it on this one unfortunately
Totally agree! The music is a terrible distraction!
The music is unbelievable.
Wouldn't need to change so often if GM didn't put a 180 degree thermostat to keep them running so hot.
They came out with an updated version
Doesn't work on 2016 suburban ls 4wd unfortunately
Need 1 gallon of transmission fluid for a 2020 Suburban?
Need to check the capacities on the manual. I believe I used 14 qts total, but it was an exchange not a drain and refill.
I would have mounted the gasket on the pan outside.
Now disconnect the transmission return line . Add new fluid and pump out the old fluid until you see new fluid
For a half a quart of fluid that was already filtered........ no thanks
See my other video for the full fluid exchange. Full capacity is around 12 quarts, so dropping the pan is less than half of the full volume of oil.
why the engineers still haven't thought of putting a drain plug on the crankcase?? It will avoid getting oil everywhere!
I agree! Comes down to money though. Cars are not built to be serviceable anymore.
How many miles, change transmission fluid
You are amazing, keep going my friend
I was at about 58000 mi on this one.
Can I use the signature series amsoil instead?
Yes. I have been running it on my 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500. I ran it for 80,000 miles and it still came out red with very little crud on the pan magnet. But I would purge the whole system and not mix the new with the old.
@@CSXtrackworker how much does the whole system take? Capacity
@@moxxy5411 it will depend on size of the transmission. I have the older 4l60E transmission. Mine takes about 13qts because I run a second trans cooler on the truck. The vehicle owners manual should tell you how much your trans takes or a good o'l Chilton manual you can buy in an auto parts store.
I actually used the Signature Series in this project. As long as it meets the Dexron specification for the transmission you are good to go. Amsoil also offers a less expensive OE fluid.
I used 14 quarts for this project
hows the oil treating you
Doing great! I’ve got 20,000 miles on the Amsoil fluid and it still looks brand new. Click the link below if you want to pick up some.
www.amsoil.com/c/automatic-transmission-fluid/20/?zo=520048
That fluid looked like chocolate milk.
This didn’t work at all on my 2016. Very close but didn’t make it.
Interesting. I wonder if there is tolerance on the exhaust crossover. Would not take much movement to jam it up. Good luck!
@@smokingoatgarage I’m thinking it was due to settlement in the motor and trans mounts or the aftermarket exhaust was pulling up on it.
I so wanted to finish watching your video but the music became to annoying, also in several parts, your voice was drowned out but the beat.
iOS screwed me in the final cut with the music volume. Unfortunately it is what is is now. No more fancy music on future videos though. Thank you for the feedback.
Why does the video skip at the 10:56 mark and then dipstick is gone!, no longer sticking out at the bottom of the tube? And then the pan came out with ease, just a little rotation and it slides out......Hmmmmm...
Good eye! I promise no funny business, I just cut out the 20 minutes or so of me wrestling with the pan to find the right sequence. Removing the dipstick was part of that process.
@@smokingoatgarage Ahh, yeah I didn't really want that to sound mean, I have watched a lot of videos of people changing the trans filter and they all seem to have to jack the trans up or pull down on the exhaust. Maybe that is with the earlier models, I see that you have a 2020 model, the others I have watched are 2015, 2016 models. I have a 2019, I hope the pan comes off as good as yours without doing all that other stuff.
Can't hear you over the music
This is corrected in future vids. Thanks for the feedback!
Turning the jug like that spills oil !!!
Nope. Keep the opening up top at the highest point and it will pour smoothly. Keep it down low and it will glug, glug all over the place.
Also works on pouring out of 5 gallon buckets with lid.
@@smokingoatgarage RIGHT!!!
Turn off the music.
Thank you for the feedback. Will be doing that on future videos. This one can’t be modified unfortunately
Perfect video but just one question....WHY THAT STUPID ANOYING BACKGROUND MUSIC?????
Wow.. snoozefest
Turn off the music! Can't hear you talking
Your video would be better if I could hear you
Your music is to loud I can’t hear you talking
Anyone else watch another youtuber who cut the crossover pipe out with a sawzall.......seriously WTF
Unreal..I took my 2016 Tahoe to get an estimate on 90k service and the trans is one of them. Took over to a local Napa service station (one of supposed good credibility in the area) one of the guys told me that sometimes they'll cut the exhaust and re-weld .Of course at no cost to me. Lolo I walked right out and never looked back. Couldn't believe he told me that. Some people still seem to amaze me at random.
We could hear you a lot better without the irritating music.
Your background "music" blocks out your voice around 5 45. And it's annoying
The music was unbearable. Don’t understand why you need music for this.
This is bull shit. I couldn't get my pan down that low at all. in fact, I couldn't get my pan off because the exhaust system has it pinched in there. Take your truck to the GM dealer and let them screw with this. It is not worth it!
Please turn off the music
Please cut the music it’s annoying and can’t really hear you talking
Sorry I could not watch your video, that annoying constant back ground repeating tune is distracting. I have no idea why some people think it's a good idea to do that.
Thanks for the feedback. I have corrected this on future installments.
@@smokingoatgarage it would be Logical hint , if you read the previous comments he would know that your addressing the music volume.
Dah !!
That 'Music" Is SO ANNOYING! Adds NOTHING to the video
Its adds annoyense
You talk too much!!!
