Which one do you prefer? AT2035 or AT4040?

The one that wasn't made in China

@@agoranoX the AT2035 and the rest of the 20 series mics are all made in China. The AT4040 is made in Japan

Out of curiosity I checked all of my AT mics. The only one made in China is my 7 year old AT2020. My AT2040 and 2035 are made in Taiwan, which yes technically is a "republic of china". The 4040 is made in Japan. Now that's the ones that I have they may have changed origins over the years

@@RebelTech1990 I guess maybe they started making them in Taiwan instead. Either way the better ones are all made in Japan. The 20 series is still great though. Maybe they just made the 2040 there I dunno.

Had an AT2035 for almost a decade, been debating this exact upgrade. Really appreciate such a thorough analysis and comparison of the two!

Same boat. I think I'll be keeping mine a little while longer and put the money to work more efficiently into other things for the studio

Self noise & SNR of the AT2020 makes it unacceptable. The SNR of the AT2035 & AT4040 are at 82db and much better than the AT2020. I've used AT products since the late 1970s. I've owned the AT2020, AT2035,AT4040 and some of the smaller condensers. I currently own 3 AT2035s and 1 AT4040.

Great comparison. The 2040 is great but for me, I don't think the doubled price is justifiable over the 2035. Going into a good external preamp with some EQ will do wonders.

The AT2020 and AT2035 sound a very similar to me. For my use, however, I did not find that my voice came through clear enough on the AT2020, so I decided to upgrade to the AT4040. I beleive it will be less stuffy. I'll no longer have to sound as if I am talking through a bed pillow. The AT4040 seems quite clear to me, in fact, and provides that power in the low end that I'm looking for. My guess is that it would probably be good microphone for a bass singer, but is great for any voice such as my baritone. Could also be used to mic acoustic upright string bass although there are mics designed more specifically for that application.

Excellent comparison of two pretty good mics. I prefer the 4040 as well. I like it better than the 2035 for recording acoustic guitar as well. It's less muddy and airier in the highs, with a better representation of what my guitars actually sound like. Much less post eq'ing, if any, with the 4040. That said, the 4040 was more than double the price here in Canada, and it has some pretty stiff competition in the $400 range. cheers

I hear that a lot about Canadian pricing. I get a good amount of Canadian viewers that in my videos and it’s tough to relay prices internationally. Hopefully things cool off and the prices come back to normal.
      Which guitar do you have?

@@RebelTech1990 The Canadian dollar is at 80 cents US, which is pretty good, but we're still paying through the nose on a lot of products. Anyway, I look for used mint condition stuff when I feel a product is just overpriced for what it is, regardless of how much I may want it! I have a nice variety of acoustics, but my two go to favorites for recording are an old 50's Martin 000-18, a Yamaha LLX26 and an old 80's Larrivee L-09. I typically don't eq anything, but i do play a lot with mic placement, mic choice, number of mics etc when I record my guitars. Cheers

Just my experience, I had the AT2035 a few years back, and replaced and now have the RODE NT1, and the RODE NT1 is smoother and slightly less harsh over the At2035, but in these two comparisons, the AT4040 sounds slightly richer sound in bass and slightly more dynamic range.. and vs the NT1, the AT4040 seems to have slightly more clarity in sound over the RODE NTI.. Thanks for the review

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For the most part i'm not a fan of Lewitt. I will say I have warmed up to them a little bit since I first heard them. The tone just doesn't get me like the Audio Technica mics do. So the 2035 would be my choice between these two.

can you do me a favor? I think my mic (AT2035) is broken... First my mic is tooo sibilant even with 2 pop filters...
Also: When im touching the 10DB pad it does a weird rumble noise like an interference... Does that happen to you too?

The 4050 is twice the price of the 4040 and yes it's a completely pro mic. That said the 4040 is very good, too. 2035 no slouch though.
