I found it annoying when Matt said he would’ve had the 2 minute convo with Michelle if he knew how she felt. Like how did Matt expect her to react to being dumped after just saying she loved him and giving him a matching jersey??

Yeah that was really cold. I know it’s possible the producers did something, but honestly that sort of conversation seems like something the production LIVES for, like something doesn’t add up here
I think it's more interesting because Michelle said that she asked to speak to Matt (suggesting she couldn't get in contact with him) and Matt said "he would have fought harder" (suggesting someone was preventing/deterring him from speaking to her)
Instead of proposing to Rachael he is like "I want to continue our relationship and I also got you a special gift" *pulls out the 2 jerseys that say Mrs and Mr James*

I am not gonna lie, but my head was boiling when Matt said that he would have talked to Michelle if he knew how she felt ... like dude even if you didn't know, why did you ignore her like that as if you guys shared nothing together? as if she meant nothing to you?!

I read that comment as maybe production prevented the meeting, like they did not tell Matt Michelle wanted to talk again or misrepresented her intentions to him.
I think production lied to him about her intentions moreso than any of this
I feel producers had a say in that, I don’t blame Matt.
I think the fact that Matt said that if he’d had known, he would’ve “fought” for that conversation, means that producers definitely had something to do with it. They definitely wouldn’t have wanted him to talk to Michelle to save it for the ATFR, so who knows how much Matt actually knew about the nature of his conversation with Michelle

He used to be my favorite bachelor until after the final rose. The man is a coward. He didn't want to talk to Michelle, didn't want to talk to Bri(I'm assuming that he knew Bri was there), doesn't have the courage to fight through his own Achilles heel to make it work with Rachel, and doesn't have the courage to realize that he can be something other than the example his dad set. What his dad did shouldn't define the possibility of a future heartbreak.

Honestly speaking I feel like Matt has some deep rooted family trama, and he can't fully commit to a relationship without the fear of what happend to his father and mother happening to him. They all need to go to a family therapist including his dad, and settle there issues.

He probably has gone through a lot as a biracial-black man and it is not his responsibility to teach someone about what is an what isn't racist. He probably is tired of it. @@carolyntran6364 I definitely agree with you there as well, Personally over the course of the show I definitely sou how much his experience growing up with a 'broken family' really affected him. I feel like both his struggle with his black identity and growing up without his father, both really impacted him. Anyways I truly hope he figures himself out, and I'm so excited for Michelle and Katie to find there husbandos.
True .....but he is talking it too far. Like the statistics say, there are many people who grew up similar families like Matt and are not as dysfunctional as Matt. Bri is one such person, very level headed and loves life.
I love that with the news of two bachelorette seasons, it’s safe to say that the Bachelor is gonna be on hiatus indefinitely. Hopefully with this hiatus they can vet their contestants better so a debacle like this doesn’t happen again
But I still want Joe to be Bachelor😭
Hopefully they can seriously go to the very foundations of this show and uproot any exploitative, racist and misogynistic producers, executives and others in leadership. Just my hope.

It's probably not on hiatus at all since the second Bachelorette season is filmed during summer like Clare and Tayshia's season, which leaves enough time in the autumn to film the Bachelor. Until we hear otherwise, it's still going on imo.

How about they just fire the entire editing and production staff. They flat out did a bad job story wise, they cut crucial moments an information, in my opinion the problems with this season entirely come down to editing and production decisions, thats it.
Matt's Mom's influence was all it took to change the course of Bachelor history. He was doing so well without the skeptical and bitter reminder of the unsuccessful union his parent's had.
Production seemed to get on her bandwagon and as a result, Matt was disillusioned, pessimistic and unwilling to commit. Symbolically and in a small but significant way, he became his Father: distant, insecure, non-committal and absent.
This may be the worst season I've ever watched.

Can we please talk about the fact that Matt wasted everyone’s time by claiming the whole time he was ready to get married when he clearly wasn’t even from day one 🤷♀️ wtf!

I'm going to watch again . I think Matt James was a poor choice for the lead. They need to go back to picking Bachelor from the Bachlorette season. This way they know if he charismatic and intelligent. Matt seemed very nervous and unresponsive at times. There were several guys from Clare season that were intelligent and caring like Riley, Ivan, Dr. Joe. Also Mike Jones. Anyone of these guys was better on camera.

Reality Steve confirmed that this ATFR was 6 hours long so they had to cut a lot of stuff, which, for better or worse ended up being Bri's entire appearance and the talk between Rachael and Michelle and obviously even the conversations we did see were no doubt cut significantly down.
Reality Steve also said that he had heard that there was a lot more going on behind Matt and Rachael's breakup than what has been disclosed publicly, but he wouldn't say what it was because it is not confirmed information.
Based off his reaction to her at the ATFR, I could see that being the case.
But that is not unusual, they film much and edit much and always leave the most dramatic, salient, gossipy and hysterical stuff in. Its reality, but crafted to jerk us around so we keep coming back for the grand finale of histrionics.

considering this racism stuff came up because a girl who went to high school with rachael revealed that she and other girls who dated black boys had been bullied by rachael and her friends...i suspect that matt knows that rachael's racism went deeper than just ignorantly going to an antebellum ball (several years after it was banned and hosted by a fraternity that believes robert lee is their spiritual founder) and couldn't handle it. he couldn't make eye contact with her and didn't seem to want her to physically touch him + didn't hug her at the end.

I really appreciate how you went about this video Chris. A lot of times, some allies will try and talk about these issues (which we appreciate) but they don’t go about it the right way. Thank you for letting each of them speak and tell their own stories in this recap and not talking over them.
Matt need therapy and professional help him and his mom because he had alot of emotional baggage and alot of trauma he went through growing up that need professional help before getting in a relationship with someone.
Agree. I don’t think his mom is the villain here but I also know what it’s like to be married to a man who brought his parents baggage into the marriage. Confront these problems before you’re looking for your life partner.

Agreed. He seemed to unpack a lot on the show and I hope he follows that path with professional therapy. I think he’s a good guy, it’s hard to unpack some things alone.
I think it’s a little out of bounds to say someone needs therapy. I believe all humans do, but singling someone put like that isn’t okay, and people weren’t saying that about Pete or Colton. Also, Matt may not see your post, but people in the same boat will, and it may affect them. I too was abandoned by my father, and it hurt, but I was not incapable of falling in love, getting married, and having a happy relationship. Matt and Rachael could have stayed together had she just not gone to that party, we have no way of knowing.
Emmanuel did the most fantastic job I’ve ever seen on a reality tv show. He was articulate, sincere and asked GREAT thought provoking questions. Get rid of chris Harrison. Acho all the way!

i agree but i also don’t want to see Emmanuel’s brand new spokesman career get tainted with the toxicity of the bachelor franchise. i think he was an amazing host and did so much better than chris harrison, but he hasn’t even been with FS1 for a year yet and i’d just rly hate to see this franchise ruin that

“Love isn’t the end all be all”
Strange how, for a show all about love, the theme of this season is best encapsulated by what Matt's mom said: "People fall in and out of love, and love is not the end all be all". Unexpectedly real.
Couple love becomes a commitment, not a "feeling". Matt would have been gone sooner or later anyway he is too immature for commitment at this point. Would rather point fingers than do his own work that he is insisting she do. He is wearing race like a badge, which is not uncommon these days. It might take decades to lay down the sword of retaliation.
I don’t know if I fully agreed with her there. I’ve been married for years now, and yeah, the infatuation feeling isn’t always there, but love, a commitment, can be with hard work.

You go in and out of "feeling" loved and loving, so you better be prepared for the times it doesn't feel good so you can hang in there. It's no day in the park long term, that's why the sickness/health, richer/poorer stuff in the vows. He was into happily ever after with no work, if it hurts I am leaving scenario, as we saw.

She said on social media that she is very hesitant to share sources because she doesn’t want it to seem “preformative” or just to save face. I actually think she said the right thing by mentioning it is not just about learning, but putting those things into action. I know lots of people who have learned things about race in current times but fail to actually put those learned things into action. It’s really a shame when that happens.
I would like to also suggest that this thing cannot end until black people recognize the mean spirit they go about things, with resentment and retaliation. This public shaming is over the top and they need to also learn compassion and forgiveness for the net we are ALL caught in, because they are constantly calling attention to being black, keeping it alive as an axe to grind. By now we have turned ourselves inside out with programs, apologies, admissions etc. and its time for a new Martin Luther King to come along and introduce a how to forgive tour, not continue the humiliate and shame tour. They ALSO need to "do the work" and no one seems to recognize it.

I didn't know him before this and he did an incredible job. Going to check out Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man. I also really liked how he distinguished and made a concerted effort with the language used. Language is incredibly powerful.

I think that Matt did the show for clout. It’s obvious he’s never been ready to be in a serious relationship, much less an engagement. I feel that his dad walking out of his life has affected him a great amount and I think he’d greatly benefit from therapy. I wish Matt well. 🤗

Matt was a disappointing bachelor because he wasn’t the right type of person for this show. I agree that there is absolutely no onus on him to stay in a relationship with Rachel, but want to acknowledge that he didn’t want a marriage with anyone. He needs help and support and I hope he gets it, but you’ve got to be whole and confident to do something like the show. No one should be forced to get engaged, but coming into the show to end up with a girlfriend after 3 months isn’t special and defeats the premise of the show. At that point, there’s no reason for The Bachelor
Can I ask a question about that? In Germany (where I'm from) the Bachelor(better) NEVER ends with an engagement, just with the commitment to be a couple. The show is still beloved and fun to watch. Why is it so important in the US that the engagement happens? Honestly curious :)

@@alexandrav7739 well in my opinion the show used to have leads and lots of contestants who 100% wanted true love and marriage. The efforts to find true love seemed more genuine even though it's always been just a tv show. Now its basically a dating show filled with people who seem to prioritize social media exposure, or want a career that can benefit from what the show brings, over anything else. It just feels cheaper. I cant even remember the last bachelor choice that really seemed ready.. nomatter what lines they spewed into the camera.

Wish they would’ve shown the conversation between Rachel and Michelle. That could’ve been a great help to the conversation going on in the world, being able to show healing rather than focusing entirely on the pain

with the way matt was acting with her (pushing away her hand, no hug or eye contact) i feel like more happened behind the scenes that what we know... like how matt said he had to explain to her why the photos were bad and the history behind it, but i also think he’s just (rightfully) hurt

With Michelle, Matt was super engaged; nodding, looking at her, and even smiling when she made fun of him. With Rachael, he was so absent. It's just interesting to see how he turned off all emotions when he had to talk to the woman he picked.
I think Emmanuel did a beautiful job hosting, I very much hope that he comes back for more segments and/or AFRs

I think Matt really was just not ready to be the Bachelor. If marrying someone who understands what his experience was as a Black man is something that is important to him, he has to know that Rachael would never fulfill that. What she did was wrong, but for Matt to expect her to know the Black experience is just not realistic. In my mind, he should have either chosen to stay with her and educate her, or gone with Michelle, who already shares that experience with him. How Matt dealt with the women this season just shows a lot of immaturity on his part.
You know you make a good point. Being with a white woman she will never fully understand what it’s like, even if she tries her hardest to. I understand why he’s so upset, like I get it. But I mean if you love someone unconditionally, wouldn’t you try at least a little bit to understand or make amends at least? His perception of love is skewed, so it makes me question if he even loved her fully.

For sure going forward these are the types of conversations he should be having with the women he dates/ hopes to marry. That’s why as his mum said “love isn’t the end all be all”. There’s so much more to a relationship than just how you feel.
Yeah I think that there's a strong contrast between him and Tayshia. He says it himself, the pictures forced him to confront a reality that he'd been avoiding-that Rachael was raised ignorant of things that affect his daily life as a black man. In Tayshia's season she talked about that a lot, but Matt didn't, and it came back to bite him.

There's a lot to unpack on that one. It was once illegal, remember? That's actually part of why a marriage license was incorporated in the first place, so that a couple who composed of a "free" & "slave" status could be together in a way that was recognized. Other than that it was a common law marriage for free & slave couples. Then in places like Missouri interracial couples were banned from certain neighborhoods under private covenants and had to go court to contest such arrangements in the 1970-80's..then there's the real dark side to this. There were many an occasion where black men were falsely accused of assaulting white women and were often lynched on this basis. Emmitt Till was a 15 year old Chicago kid who had been used to some form in integration back home in school. However in Money, Mississippi he made a fatal error of saying "hi" to an older white woman named "Karen" Bryant (yes, she was the original "Karen"). She was so outraged by the "audacity " of a black male even looking at her, much less speaking that she arranged for her husband & brother in law to murder him in cold blood. Emmitt's mother had an open casket funeral to display the horror of real racism in the U.S. and give society a gut check. Yes, some things have obviously changed, but some things have obviously not. So understand that when it comes to interracial relationships, there's a lot of societal baggage loaded in the subject on both sides of the aisle. This is why Matt & Rachel would probably not have worked out anyway even if he did choose her in the end. This doesn't damn everyone else, but they didn't have the chops to truly look at their situation and the show conveniently edited out the substantive parts of their conversation and triggered much of the audience. ...quite a mess
It was a very weird thing to say before the start of his season. Neither Rachel or Michelle did that because it’s not necessary. It just made things worse
Matt is so unlikeable to me. I really tried to like him but he just seems kinda robotic? And l am really trying to understand the pressure he is under and his statements that his situation different from other bachelors... But like, he chose to be the bachelor. It was not a situation where he would be chosen and then later, the social issues in 2020 would become even more pressing (not that this was not an issue before, but lets be honest, the Bachelor was kind of reacting to the BLM movements and protests after GF). So he did not really "fall" into it. He agreed to be the first black bachelor. He took up the challenge knowingly... So yeah, I mean I get that it was difficult but it still does not change the fact that he was clearly not ready for this... It kinda makes me think he did it for the IG followers. Which I would be fine with if at least the season was not soooo cringeyyyy and hard to watch...
I couldn't get over how every conversation he had with the women felt like a middle-management boss trying to interview them for a job opening. Or like he was trying to defuse an employee conflict between them.

Lets get to the truth of the matter... Matt is a momma's boy. He let mom's failures (love is not be all end all, and feelings fade) as his crux to back away from possibly true feelings he had.
He will never move forward if he lets other peoples failures be the measure of the success you haven't even experienced yet.
I think its deeper than that. I think the whole family makes the dad a scapegoat and they are the victims, he probably changed greatly from back then but they will never see past the labels they gave him and the past. Get over it.

Emmanuel was a bit awkward at times (understandably so), but man he's got great charisma. Kinda wished they would've picked him as the bachelorette host but he's a busy guy so makes sense
There was no live audience and therefore no energy to roll with and fill the silences. I noticed it when I was watching, and I definitely prefer an audience ! And I wonder if he would have done better with one there.

Dude, a muppet would be a better choice than Chris Harrison, who wouldn't even have the tools to deal with all the issues drummed up at that AFR episode. Emmanuel I think did what he could and it was a salvage mission.
Watching Rachel and Matt together was a knife to the heart man... you could tell there was so much pain between the both of them and there was still so much love there no matter what side you’re on whether it’s the cancel Rachel train or the forgive through proved change train. That’s the hardest part is when you love someone but they may not be the best person for you. Hopefully if it’s not with each other both of them will be able to move on and be in their own happy lives. I still think if they are able to get through this it would show that people can change and be forgiven for their past actions. I’ve always been more for educating people rather than canceling them because Rachel truly does seem like a good hearted person.
I admire that Matt always thinks before he speaks even if it is a very long time. Matt looks entirely broken and used, if I ever cross paths with a bachelor producer they better run

The silver lining in this season is that the finale highlighted that people can have interracial relationships, marriages and children and STILL be racist. I am black and have seen it before in the form of racial slurs, ignoring introduction and immersion into the minority culture, and offense when the minority family does not accept you (most often because the family knows in advance that significant other is racist). It's doubly sad because there are many relationships that are not, but unfortunately interracial companionships are often sought out for another purpose other than finding love.
Emmanuel did a good job hosting. Matt needs deep therapy. Matt couldn't give Michelle two minutes to explain, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out she was hurt. Before that he made out with Bri, Serena P, Chelsea and the grad student that he dropped and she snatched her hand away... knowing that he did not see himself involved in a relationship with. He is more like his dad than he actually is willing to admit.

All of the issues here, not feeling understood, not feeling heard, not having shared experience, feeling hurt by a partner’s actions etc. are all challenges you will encounter in all relationships! I am glad they figured out this could not get past this sooner rather than later.
