Matt James had no idea what was in store when he agreed to be the first Black lead on the 25th season of ABC’s beloved television show The Bachelor. You may think you know everything there is to know about him, but that was only his first impression.
When The Bachelor franchise announced Matt James as the first Black lead, it was celebrated as long-overdue progress on the primetime show. America fell in love with Matt-the Christian, former NFL athlete, and nonprofit CEO-who charmed millions of viewers each week. But the off-screen conversations around the show revealed the realities and inescapable challenges of being Black in America and the depth of racism that still exists.
On the show, Matt could only go so far in sharing his own story with America. In First Impressions, Matt shares his views on controversial topics like race and opportunity that defined his season on The Bachelor. Matt lives at the intersection of these important issues and shares the wisdom his experience has granted him.
Matt describes the joys and difficulties of being the youngest of two Black sons, raised by a single, working-class, white mother in Raleigh, North Carolina. He elaborates on the spiritual closeness and sense of duty he felt for his mother, but also the complex relationships he had with the many male figures in his life: his prejudiced, Italian grandfather, who had trouble accepting Matt as his own; his father, whose womanizing and petty crime put strain on the family; and his older brother, who was Matt’s protector in youth, but who struggled with the long shadow of their father’s legacy.
Simultaneously inspirational and informative, First Impressions will leave readers with a deeper understanding of the life experiences that prepared Matt for such a divisive moment in television history.

I never considered The Bachelor model seriously. Predictable break ups. One bachelor, 25-30 beautiful options? Until I watched Season 25; 1st Af/ Am lead. Your opening prayer clutched my interest and by the 2nd episode I chose Rachael for you. I received your book 5/5, and finished it 5 hrs (on flight to California and back to Indy). I enjoyed it. I’m a father of 3 daughters. Matt I’m proud of you as if you were the son I didn’t have. I’m a singer for weddings (I’m just saying). I’d sing “I Found Love” by BB Winans for Matt and “From This Moment On” by Shania Twain for Rachael.

Matt and Rachel ,I like to see how much 💕💕💕💕💕💕 love you both have for other. I,m glad you both have each because I was glad Matt pick Rachel because you make a good couple together and hope you both stay together forever .I wish my husband would stay with me but he got other woman pregnant so than we got the divorce . Also I never remarried now I,m older can't find man that want to go with me because they said I,m ugly and heavy but I,m trying lose weight also I lost some weight . I was about 255 and now I went down to 241 but I met a man but he said I still was to heavy..So I guess I'll never will have a guy.
Also I'm 71 years old and I wish I find guy about 65 years to 69 years old because I like that their younger.

I being a Black person with a Black mother and a Black father can understand how a biracial person can fall “in love” with a person with a questionable racists past.

That might be an issue if they had just begun dating and their relationship was a few weeks old. At this point they have been dating for 1 year and they are very comfortable with one another. I feel certain Matt thinks nothing of the periodic interruptions by Racheal, at least he gives no indication that he's bothered by it.

I'm not sure how these 2 are still together given some of her transgressions (HUGE RED FLAG) but I hope that she's learned from her past, has grown, done the work, will continue to do the work and hopefully become an ally. Only time will tell. For now it's a bit cringe.
