But now we are on top! gaming is cool and the common thing to do. But gaming culture has shifted drastically since it became mainstream. It's a very good point: what these authors really object to is that 40k, under the Grim Dark style and sci-fi tropes, reflects the reality that their world view of "cooperation" can't work. You don't have to be as reductive as saying that specific factions in-game represent specific real world factions, it's enough to point out that sometimes conflict is unavoidable and, sorry, you can't always make peace or agree to disagree. It's just a little harder to deny when it's omnicidal aliens like Necrons or Tyranids.

It's a very good point: what these authors really object to is that 40k, under the Grim Dark style and sci-fi tropes, reflects the reality that their world view of "cooperation" can't work. You don't have to be as reductive as saying that specific factions in-game represent specific real world factions, it's enough to point out that sometimes conflict is unavoidable and, sorry, you can't always make peace or agree to disagree. It's just a little harder to deny when it's omnicidal aliens like Necrons or Tyranids.
