You need make it clear you are talking about Management consulting. IT Consultancies usually are a lot different to Management consulacies, we don't have a toxic/ back stabbing environment.
@@KajolPhadnis Hahah Yes but one can use this as things to look out for from the start. Some take aways from this video. - Network Network and Network! - Be prepared to work long hours and last minute changes! I think the challenges/disadvantages you mentioned still will set me up well!
More than toxic environment, some people are toxic who will speak over you for brownie points and to put you down. If you are generally soft spoken then everyone will have you for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then make you do the dishes ...lol
All great advice and a good reflection on consulting cultures. My experience is the internal competitive nature is everywhere but generally reasonable for smart, high performers. But, in some teams (regardless of firms) I’ve seen some really bad behaviour. So if you’re not enjoying that aspect find the right group for you (whether more or less competitive :)
Nice to hear your views and I believe most of the points which you mentioned are applied to majority of the jobs. Would like to know which technologies do you work exactly at your job ?
Hi, Really informative Kajol! Actually this video popped up at the exact time when I needed it. I am an aspiring consultant. Going through a tough time right now and you enlightened the cons of consulting with brutal truth. Also if you can, just a small request , please upload a video on what exactly consultants do when they are under time crunch. For eg. how someone does last minute changes to their deck while being just chill and 'a smooth operator' :p. Please keep up this great work. You are making a change in people's lives. Kudos With Best Regards, Arun
haha under time crunch, we are panicking inside I promise. It's about just making sure the quality is still there so reviewing your work but still having quick shortcuts etc to help works. I will create a video soon :)
Hey Kajol! I have a quick question. I am working for a big 4 firm fresh out of college, and I was working for door dash over the summer. Are small jobs like these not allowed once you are an associate? How are you allowed to have a YT channel while working at Deloitte? Is it only after a certain income they tell you that you aren’t allowed to continue it?
Im entering third year and have no consulting experience but retail experience and did a virtual internship in commercial law. I changed my mind and dont want to do law, how do i make myself stand out when applying to consulting graduate jobs??
Hi Kajol, thank you for sharing your perspective! Wow, so harsh 😄 May I ask which firm you work for? Just to share my view on the items you raised based on my own experience (5 years at McKinsey): 1. Path dependency: Yes, the risk of you ending u🙂p not doing what you actually want to do is high if at the beginning of your consulting career you do not “push back” and work hard to get on projects you like to do! If you accept too many projects in the same area, you quickly have become an “expert” and have digged yourself into a rabbit hole that by that time is then hard to get out of. 2. No social events in the evening: That’s true of course! However, most people going into consulting know what’s the deal… And some people do not mind so much given during the weekdays you are anyway far from home. 3. Can be toxic and competitive: Interesting you say that! This is something I did not find at McKinsey at all!! People on all levels are extremely supportive of each other… Projects are so tough I sometimes feel collaboration is essential for collective survival 😉 4. Difficult to fit in: I am sorry you felt that way and am happy you feel now better about it 😉 Again, at McKinsey I would say we are encouraged to “be ourselves” (whatever that truly means 😉) 5. Side hustles are difficult, 6. Not a teamplayer, 7. Can’t handle team pressure: Yes, totally agree with you on all of them! Well, it seems you still work as a consultant though, too, so the Pros must still outweigh these Cons 😀 Best Jack
Haha not harsh and seems like you agree with majority of them Jack. These aren't all based on my experience and I explicitly say in 3 that not my environment, I've had an amazing team to be honest! Defo pros outweigh the cons haha, otherwise I'd be outta here. In terms of not seeing friends and family in the evening, I think not all of us are far away from home and as we more value the importance of mental health as a society, this becomes v. important factor to many! Yeah at my firm we are encouraged to be our 'authentic self' over the last 3 years which has definitely meant I can be myself as mentioned!! Excited to see where you take your channel btw :)
Hi Kajol, thanks for your kind response! I am happy you still (and nevertheless!) enjoy being a consultant, too 🙂 Indeed though, it is great you make people aware of the (potential) drawbacks, too, because nothing is worse than working for years towards your dream job and then realize after a few weeks on the job it is not the right fit for you... 😱 I am also happy that you say most of these drawbacks do actually not apply to you personally 🙂 By the way, you did not say which firm you work for, but I found out now from some of your other videos 😉 With regards to my own channel... yeah, I am also excited to see where I will take it to... 😄 Have a good weekend & talk soon Jack
Sup, I'm back. A month off while I've rekindled friendships and ate great food. Do what excites 😇✌🏾

You did sum it up. The more time you give it, the more you sacrifice your personal life. I'm beginning to fear matching the pace😭
we can do it!!

Hi Kajol, many thanks for sharing these experiences. An eye opener for me who is looking to apply for a consultancy job with one of the big 4.
No way I can copy that thumbnail expression. Impossible ! And great insights.
Great video as per usual ! Would love to see some content about internships and more VLOGS !
Okay added to the list :)
Agree fully with all the points raised.
