I used to create custom cakes at a store bakery. I was only allowed to do most of it because of advertisement.. however later I had to follow copy rights etc. The cakes I custom built were not more expensive than any of the regular cakes I made.. but they were the most fun. I built a lady bug cake, a copenhagen can cake, a western themed cake etc. all with custom parts and designs..air brush etc.. I would do it again if I were still working in that bakery lol :) when you love your art, you just love to do it...also it's better unless someone is requesting specific things, to charge less so that in case they don't like it you don't have to worry that you charged too much lol :) BTW my cakes looked fab..and I didn't use fondant so you could eat the delicious frosting :)

Creative professional here 🙋 We pretty much all get into our professions cause we like it, when someone throws a juicy budget at us and provides an open ended but clear prompt, we basically have a dream client on our hands and creative juices flow free. All of these cakes, especially the zombie are clearly a labor of love and look like they were a LOT of fun to make. It was great to see such a great group of cakes, so much good creative stuff!
That zombie cake is an absolute work of art. I'd like to meet who made it. That's amazing someone put so much work and care into that. 200 dollars is not enough for that

The monster wedding cake is SO cool, I love how creative that was. Not even just a monster cake, but the hand and the eyes, the bloody roses. They made individual teeth, as well! The zombie is GORGEOUS, it’s so real, it’s almost life-sized, and the structure is so amazing that the arm isn’t even drooping in the slightest. The Walking Dead has NOTHING on this cake. You can see the spine outline under the skin, the wrinkles, the detail of the bicep and ribs, the discoloring of the skin and the vein-y bits, nails, and the THUMB BENDS BACK LIKE IT WOULD NATURALLY. This baker neglected N O T H I N G. The third Frankenstein-type of cake is still super cool, even if it’s maybe “underwhelming” in comparison to the other two. It’s still got nice detailing with the handle of the knife, the maggots, the irises of the eyes, the skin really looks like skin that’s actually been sliced off of someone recently and was stitched onto the cake. It’s very creative and it shows the hard work out into it. Of course I can’t taste any of these, but visually they’re all so cool and creative. I hope the zombie baker is also a professional sculptor.
yes! I wouldn't feel comfortable serving the zombie cake, and honestly, how would you? I mean there's a lot of wasted food with all the wires and who knows what stuff in the head.
@Miriam Silva Since the zombie cake has a smaller amount of usable cake that's probably what helps it fit into the budget criteria. You're mostly getting that for the look. I didn't really "get" the last one though. It didn't seem to have a solid theme. Exposed brain on top of.... ? Couldn't tell if it's a zombie, a person... who knows. The skull that fell off was completely put of place and the darkness where the skin was ripped off just seemed like a way to get out of putting in my detail.

Let's give some love to that wedding cake eating the hand. That was so inventive! I loved the blood tipped roses, and how it wasn't JUST a Halloween themed cake, but a horror play on the cake business itself. (They were all really cool though. I liked the ripped skin on the third one too.) I think I'd have been happy with paying $200 for each of those though. They were all so creative and clearly had a LOT of work put into them. And the red velvet on top of chocolate for the third one was a nice touch. Seems like of the three, they focused more on the taste of the cake than the design.
I've always wanted to be a cake artist. But I have a very hard time following directions & just like to "wing it" whilst in the kitchen. I learned real quick you can just wing it when baking 😂😂
I graduated from a four year college with a degree in baking and pastry arts. I was the only person in my classes who would wing it. I think it makes what I create more unique!

I *love* doing realistic eyeballs in a variety of materials, including cake. The secret to a truly realistic eye is to use just a tiny bit of blue in the optic nerve and the capillaries. Its a little touch but it makes all the difference.

I think the design on the first one is really cool! The zombie one is the clear winner when it comes to artwork, but I think the first one has the most creative design and is blowing my mind. The last one still seems to have a lot of attention to detail! Holy shit $200 can get you far when you far when you give the artist creative freedom. I'm sure some of them were dying to execute some of the ideas bouncing around in their head and were happy someone came around and paid them to set the ideas free.

I like the wedding cake the most because its the best balance of practical and cool looking. The zombie looks amazing but its more decoration than cake. The other one is just okay, honestly I think the other two cakes were underpriced

The zombie cake is staggeringly underpriced. The brain cake looks like perhaps a really busy or beginner baker and it slightly overpriced.

Those are amazing. I know what you mean about the reaction. At delivery of a cake that took 18 hours to do, the customer says "It 's cute". I thought I would lose my mind.
I think the design on the first one is really cool! The zombie one is the clear winner when it comes to artwork, but I think the first one has the most creative design and is blowing my mind. The last one still seems to have a lot of attention to detail! Holy shit $200 can get you far when you far when you give the artist creative freedom. I'm sure some of them were dying to execute some of the ideas bouncing around in their head and were happy someone came around and paid them to set the ideas free.
Since you're praising them so much it would be really nice to have the names of the bakeries? This could help them get more popular, it's kind of too bad they're not getting credit for their amazing work 🥺

I like the wedding cake the most because its the best balance of practical and cool looking. The zombie looks amazing but its more decoration than cake. The other one is just okay, honestly I think the other two cakes were underpriced
Plot twist: the zombie cake is a real zombie.
You gave them carte blanche creative freedom to make epic Halloween cakes. I think two out of the three took the opportunity to absolutely indulge their creativity and skills. Those are WOW! cakes.

I actually like the wedding cake the most. Obviously zombie is incredible craft-wise, but the creativity and easthetics of a plain white wedding cake devouring a human is something righ up my alley.
